MATTERS COMMUNITY MANAGER: Valerie Velazquez EMAIL: vwinfo@accessdifference.com WEBSITE: villagewalkatlakenona.com

Hi Everyone! I hope everyone has had a wonderful year this far! I’m looking forward to a lovely holiday season this year and, on behalf of the Access Management Team, would like to extend our warmest wishes to all of you and your families. As I am settling into this new role, I am so thankful for the time I have spent working with this community and each of you! We’d like to thank everyone who has volunteered and participated in committees

this year. It is because of your dedication to your community that we will continue to strive and make this the best place to live in Central Florida!

As always, please feel free to reach out to us at any time if you have any questions.

SPIRIT TEAM

Meet us in the Town Center Thursday, December 10th at 6:30 PM

We have one common denominator…we live in VillageWalk and this our home! We’re a diverse community with homelands from around the world and we’re rich with tradition, culture, religion and beliefs. When you think about it, as diverse as we are, we’re alike regarding the fact that we’ve brought our traditions to VillageWalk. Collectively, we celebrate with our families and our friends the Winter Solstice, Christmas, Hanukkah, St. Nicholas, Las Posadas, Pancha Ganapati, Bodhi Day, Eid e-Milad-un Nabi and many more! These are the traditions we’ve carried with us in our hearts to celebrate in our new homeland. Did you know that to “celebrate” is to publicly acknowledge a significant or happy day or event with a social gathering or an enjoyable activity?! This past month along with my husband and several other friends I participated in the social gathering of the Diwali Festival of Lights that was celebrated by our Indian residents. This was our first experience and we met many new friends dressed in beautiful, brightly colored outfits, we tried delicious foods and had an enjoyable evening learning about the Indian culture. I’ll be the first to admit that the food was a little out of my comfort zone – but I had to practice what I preach so I tried every single food that was served. And, yep, it was all amazing! Much to my excitement, this was the 1st Annual Diwali Celebration! Our incredible hosts, Kam and Sanjay along with their families anticipated approximately 35 guests which resulted in over 100 residents attended! To me, it’s obvious that so many of us ventured outside our their comfort zones for the evening to experience something different. That is not to say that other events like bunco, bingo, trivia and many other fun activities are no longer exciting; it just means that it seems that we’re ready to add to our cultural experience in VillageWalk and are interested in new adventures! As always, this leads up to my neverending comment of “what’s my point” – and you’re right! Whatever your interests and/or beliefs, traditions and culture, we invite you to share your ideas with our Spirit Team. If you’re not a planner but have a vision, we welcome your thoughts! Our Spirit Team meetings are the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Town Center. If you have an idea or suggestion you’d like to share or would like to volunteer for an upcoming event, please e-mail the Lifestyle Team at the Town Center at vwlife@accessdifference.com. Our team looks forward to meeting you and exchanging ideas! See you around VillageWalk.

Landscaping Update

December 2015 - VillageWalk Wire | 9

By: Chris Skerzsick

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving. We all have plenty to be thankful for, including the beautiful weather we enjoy this time of year in Central Florida! My wife and I spent the holiday up north, visiting our daughter in Virginia. We got to watch her play basketball and spend some quality time with her, which was nice. Awaking to frost in the morning, made me thankful for the weather back home! After nearly two months with almost no measurable rainfall, we finally got a little love from Mother Nature. As I have said, many times before; with the ongoing issues and the complexity of this irrigation system, we must get some rainfall on a regular basis to avoid turf and plant issues. We will continue to work on trimming palms and installing mulch as we move thru the winter months. As I mentioned in the last newsletter; please be conscious of the work we need to do when you are putting out lights and decorations for the holidays. We will do our best to avoid these areas. The last thing we want to do is cause any damages with our equipment. Exposed extension cords and wires are all susceptible to damage. We want to thank you for allowing us to service your community. We continue to work to improve our processes in an attempt to serve you better. I believe we were better this year than last, and we want to try to be even better in 2016. No matter what your beliefs are, I hope everyone takes the time to slow down and enjoy the season. All too often, we get so busy with our daily routines that we lose sight of what is really important. Down To Earth wants to wish all of the VillageWalk and your loved ones, a safe and joyous holiday season. The 13th Annual Gingerbread House

Extravaganza in Jacksonville returns December 2nd through December 23rd! JHS is proud to present this beloved holiday tradition for three weeks each December. Visitors enjoy gigantic, creative gingerbread houses built by chefs, bakers, architects, engineers, culinary school students, families, young people and other individuals. These tasty creations are placed on display at the Jacksonville Historical Society headquarters, historic Old St. Andrews, immediately across the street from the Veteran’s Memorial Arena. The Gingerbread House Extravaganza showcases some of the most creative art exhibited during the year in Jacksonville. Gingerbread and confection creations from traditional houses to animals and fairy tale themes offer holiday magic. Hundreds of hours are required for the construction of these edible structures – amazing sights to behold! Children love to play the scavenger hunt and find items throughout the display. Joining the Extravaganza each year are Junior League of Jacksonville Sustainers, who create themed trees that are showcased throughout Old St. Andrews. Betsy Lovett’s towering and beautiful angel tree remains the Extravaganza’s centerpiece.

This charity event benefits the children’s programs of the Jacksonville Historical Society Where is it held? For more Information http://www.jaxhistory.org/gingerbreadextravaganza/

Holiday Garbage and Recycling Pick Up Frequently Asked Questions Will my garbage and recycling be picked up on holidays? Garbage is picked up on all holidays except Thanksgiving and Christmas. On those occasions that your pickup day falls on one or both of these holidays, your garbage will be picked up on the NEXT SCHEDULED pickup day. Residential recycling will continue to provide service on all holidays. How can I dispose of my natural Christmas tree? Remove all decorations and tinsel from your Christmas tree. Place the tree curbside on your regular yard waste day. If your tree is more than 6 feet tall, please cut it in half before placing it curbside. Since we recycle all yard waste, your tree will be recycled. How do I dispose of bulky items (large items)? What can I do with an old sofa or other large item? You may place a large item at the curb on your normal yard waste day. We collect appliances, lawn mowers, furniture and other large household items. To avoid incurring additional charges if a claw truck has to be sent out, place one item out on your yard waste day each week. I need to dispose of an old stove, refrigerator or washer, what should I do? Our large item collection includes these items which we call “white goods. For safety reasons you are required to remove the doors from refrigerators and freezers before you place them curbside to ensure that children will not become trapped in them. In September Evelyn McClin with 10 members of her ministry group, Project of Love from The Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Oviedo, visited Dressed in Hope. These amazing folks came armed with 100 beautiful dress to be added to our inventory. Each dress was individually sized and packed in a zip-lock bag. Their club also donated a box of sewing supplies, and a check for $50.00. Thank you Redeemer Presbyterian ministry group! During September, we also held our 2nd annual yard sale for the benefit of our club. This is our only fund-raiser and we had a very successful day. A big thank you to all the folks who graciously donated items, and/or their time to work the sale. It was appreciated! HOLIDAYS & YOUR PETS!

The holidays are here! This should be a happy time for you and your pets. Keep in mind the food and decorations that make the holidays so much fun for us can be very dangerous for your pet. Avoid these potential hazards for the holidays and everyday to avoid emergency visits to the vet. FOOD: Holiday foods we enjoy can create issues for your pets. Rich, fatty foods, like gravy or grease, can create simple upsets to chronic inflammations. Some so bad, they may cause serious issues like pancreatitis and require hospitalization. Alcohol can be deadly, with many dogs dying from a single drink. Chocolate, coffee, tea all contain caffeine and other dangerous elements which can cause damage to the nervous system, affect the urinary system and cause the heart to accelerate. Seizures and even death can occur. Many nuts, especially Macadamia nuts can affect the digestive and nervous systems. Bones from fish, meat, or poultry often cause serious problems if swallowed. Tobacco products can be fatal to pets. Artificial sweeteners (especially xylitol) found in some gums, mints, candy & other treats is very toxic and deadly. Aluminum foil or plastic wrap covered in juice or gravy can cause choking or intestinal obstruction. Strings from roasts if ingested may choke a dog or an organ and will require surgery to remove. Candy wrappers will cause choking. And don’t forget the garbage pails that house all those tempting scraps. Make sure to pet-proof it and keep it secure. POISIONOUS PLANTS: . Many of the plants we have during the holidays can be poisonous to pets including holly, mistletoe and poinsettias. DECORATIONS AND GIFTS: Ribbons, yarn, and string can cause intestinal obstruction, often require surgery and can be fatal. Ribbons around your dog's neck are also dangerous. Gifts under the tree full of bows and ribbons can be deadly if a curious pet or cat starts snooping around. Due to a dogs keen sense of smell, a gift for them especially a bone or treat can be very enticing even if wrapped. Make sure to keep the pets’ gifts safely out of their reach and not under a tree. CANDLES can easily cause burns or fires if a dog jumps up and hits it. Keep them out of reach. BATTERIES: can be toxic, cause intestinal obstruction and some cases deadly. CHRISTMAS TREE: Christmas trees and their decorations can create hazards for pets. Make sure stands are stable. Secure the tree to a wall or window to avoid falling. Tree needles can be toxic and cause mouth and stomach irritation. Tinsel is deadly. If consumed, it can cause blockages, will require surgery. Its shiny stringy appearance is especially attractive to cats. Best to leave off the tree if possible. Glass ball ornament is another play toy both for dogs and cats. If they grab and it shatters in their mouth, they will not only have glass cuts in their mouth but also in their digestive tracks. Best not to use food to decorate your tree or house. Candy canes, gingerbread men, popcorn, raisons are all dangerous. Raisons can kill a dog if digested. Artificial snow can cause toxic and stomach issues. Electric cords at any time are dangerous if a dog decides to nibble on it. Injuries range from burns, electrical shock, electrocution or death. Always be careful with electric cords. Unplug decorative lights when not monitoring. Tree stands should be covered with a tree skirt to prevent a pet to drink or play with the water. Tree preservatives are enticing as they are sugar based. Pesticides sprayed on trees can get into the water. Bacteria can grow from sitting water. THE PUPPY GIFT: New pets are not good holiday gifts. If someone is thinking about getting a new pet, give the new prospective owner a variety of dog toys, food, or books on dog care, but let them be the decision maker of who their new pet will be. Why not make the holidays more enjoyable for homeless pets? Contact your local animal shelter to see if you can donate food, kitty litter, toys, or time. Or maybe find your fur’ever pet and make their holiday very special! CHEERS TO A FABULOUS HOLIDAY! DOG & FRIENDS * www.pawsitive-solutions.com 407-697-5119 * Julie@dogandfriends.com

CRIME TAKES NO HOLIDAY!

Shopping • Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member. • Avoid wearing expensive jewelry. • Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings. • Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible. They are the prime targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas, bus stops and on buses. • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Keep cash/wallet in your front pocket. Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible. • Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused. • Keep a record of all your credit card numbers in a safe place at home. • Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps. • After placing and concealing parcels inside your vehicle, get in and park in another location in the parking lot before reentering the store or mall. • Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year “con artists” may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings. Automated Teller Machine (ATM) • If you must use an ATM, choose one that is located inside a police station, mall or well-lighted location. • Withdraw only the amount of cash you need. • Protect your PIN by shielding the ATM keypad from anyone who is standing near you. • Do not throw away your ATM receipt at the ATM location. At Home • Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even for a few minutes. • When leaving home for and extended time, have a neighbor or family member watch your house and pick up your newspaper and mail. • Indoor and outdoor lights should be on an automatic timer. • Leave a radio or television on so the house looks and sounds occupied. • Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home. Design Tips

The Holiday Table

If you are hosting a dinner party during the holidays, here are a few tips to set the perfect table! Start by deciding if it is going to be a formal for more informal party. You may choose to serve a buffet style meal; this allows more space to decorate the table with pretty things, rather than trying to squeeze in lots of serving platters. Either way, make it special. Consider a color theme and keep to that theme by incorporating those colors when choosing the linens, dishes and center piece. Adding candles and crystal to the table evokes a sparkling elegant mood. Have fun and be creative when adding the decorative pieces to the table. According to Emily Post, the diagrams shown will give you the lay of the land or table, so to speak.

Napkins can be folded next to the plate beside the forks or under the forks; they can also be put on the plate simply folded, or abstractly folded, with decorative rings, or ribbons. Don’t limit your creativity. (Christmas tree napkin folding instructions can be found on my facebook page –DÊcor by Carol Fisher) Pier One shows how to set up your buffet. To add space to the buffet table, you may set the table with a charger and the appropriate flatware, drinking glasses and napkins, keeping the plates on the buffet. if you are hosting a dinner party during the holidays, here are a few tips to set the perfect table! Note: I sometimes see that people keep their dining table always set for a dinner party. This is typically done for staging purposes in decorated model homes or homes for sale. This is not something that should be done in homes we live in. Display your beautiful china and stemware in the china cabinet, not on the table.
