Living in a climate where you can grow a wide variety of both native and exotic plants is the perfect world for a gardener and to see how others go about it is the best way to gain inspiration. Story by Sue Harris, Leura Gardens Festival Committee That is why so many locals make an annual visit to the Leura Gardens Festival, to see the best of what nature and hard work can provide. This year’s Leura Gardens Festival, the 54th will take place over 2 long weekends: Saturday, 29 September to Monday, 1 October; Friday, 5 October to Sunday, 7 October Ten magical gardens will be featured including new and returning gardens and several old favourites that bring visitors back each year. You will see cherry, plum, forest pansy and crab apple blossoms, azaleas, rhododendrons, tulips, peonies, bluebells and daffodils putting on a fabulous display of colour.

You can visit the gardens for $25 per person for an allgardens ticket or $8 per individual garden. The popular Music in the Gardens performances will be held daily in the beautiful grounds of the Waldorf Leura Gardens Resort and entry will be by way of a gold coin. Performers include some new to the Festival and several favourites such as the Katoomba Jazz Quartet, and the Heathens Choir of Blackheath. Other Festival attractions will include the Art Show put on by the Society of Mountains Artists and featuring works painted in the gardens during the Festival. Visitors can also take home a permanent memento of the Festival from the Plant Sales Centre which will this year feature plants from several new sellers, providing a much wider range of species than ever before. Both native and exotic plants will be available to suit most climate types. The Centre will also have metal garden art and an interesting range of garden tools on sale. As always, Festival proceeds go to the Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital and other local healthrelated organisations.
