ONLY 6 DAYS TO CHRISTMAS

The Village Voice would like to wish the entire Lithgow region a very Merry Christmas. We’ve had a great year, and learned a lot in the process. In particular we are very grateful for the way so many community groups, businesses and residents of the region have taken our paper to heart and helped make it better than we ever could have hoped. It’s been a very real pleasure to help tell the stories of the region; covering everything from community groups such as the Lithgow Garden Club and Cullen Bullen Progress Association, to events such as Ironfest and Celebrate

Lithgow. We’ve also had the chance to discover the generosity of the Lithgow region. With a focus on good news, we’ve covered more than one fundraiser and discovered that Lithgow is a region that is ready and willing to support others in need. From the Bender/Rushworth walk to the amazing display of Light the Night the generosity of the region, when it comes to both time and money, has been fully on display. Last, but not least, we’ve also had some amazing support from contributors this year, helping make our paper really shine. Thank you to everyone who has journeyed with us. We look forward to seeing you again in 2015.

From

the Editor This week was a big week for Australia. I don’t know about you, but I found the events in Sydney on Monday quite confronting. It also made me feel just a bit more blessed for the choice I made a few years ago when removing my family from the rat race and opting for simpler life. I was very moved by the way the community responded. I was also very moved to hear how the hostages that died, did so in the Anzac spirit of saving their ‘mates’. I’m also glad that we, as a country, looked past the potential fallout and found a way to move forward. Campaigns such as IllRideWithYou and the staggering number of flowers left at Martin Place portray us as a culture that can get over our differences; a great thing to show the world. The events did get me thinking though, what is important? In another lifetime (back when I used to frequent the city for business) it’s very likely I would have been in that part of Sydney and I could, just as easily, have been in that shop. What would I do in that situation? I don’t know, but I hope I would be able to do the brave thing and stand up for those around me. I think that Anzac spirit will remain in all of us as long as we keep remembering our fallen with respect and continue to honour those that serve this country. This is our last issue for the year and I have to say, I am thankful we will get a little break. I have worked harder this year than I have ever worked; however, the positive impacts I am seeing in our community offer some reward for our efforts. Working on something that matters is important. When I was questioning what was important, I was happy to come to the conclusion that what we are doing is important. We take what we do very seriously and next year you will see some big changes from us including a bigger paper, more news content, and other sections that will be of interest to our readers. I would like to thank all of you who have supported us; our advertisers, our readers, our contributors and my team. It has been an epic year, we have achieved a lot, but there is much more to come. Merry Christmas & Happy new year to all of you.

Your Say Make My (Last) Day! Exams are finished, books handed in and hardly any school happening. While technically it’s not a holiday, it certainly feels like one. The last day at school is little more than a formality, but it’s as close to anarchy as most kids will come. On this day the teachers are barely in charge, and probably they don’t care. The best last days of school are the ones when you have completed the final grade at that particular school. When the bell rings for the last time, you are free from that building forever. But as happy as all this makes the students, it has the opposite effect on the parents. While the kids are excited about all the free time they’re going to have, their parents are stressing out over all the free time their kids are about to get! When you grow up and become a responsible adult (and parent) holidays just aren’t the same. Longer ones come with much more responsibility, cost, and stress - and the shorter ones may as well not happen. While the temporary respite from waking up early, hurried breakfasts, school lunches, homework and kids transport is welcome, keeping kids occupied during holidays is often a nightmare, especially for working parents. And going away on a holiday, if you can afford it, is fun but invariably doesn’t cover the entire holiday

Thank’s for all your support in 2014! Rich Evans

break. Leave kids to themselves for any length of time, and you will find them endlessly watching television, or playing computer games. But before you stress out any further, it’s worth considering that it’s not where you go or what you do that makes your kids happy during holidays - what kids crave most is simply being together as a family. While their parents are at work students spend most of their days at school and holidays are a necessary mental breather. Family time together is undeniably important in a child’s development and when all is said and done, remember what is was like being a kid, because childhood is over in the blink of an eye. It’s not rocket science - stop worrying about stuff that can wait, or doesn’t matter - the television won’t explode, the computer won’t crash, and Facebook won’t forget you - do things with your kids before they grow too fast for you to catch up. But that doesn’t mean you have to manufacture contrived memories on a daily basis. The things kids remember most about holidays are the easy times spent with family and best friends - and those lifelong family memories are just as important as school. Regards, The Magpie Whisperer

The team at Christmas and Beyond have shown that, no matter what your circumstances are, Christmas doesn’t have to be lonely. By Irene Bowie-Johnson Christmas is just around the corner, and while it is anticipated by many, not everyone is looking forward to the festivities. Christmas can be a tough time of year. For some people the funds may not be there, while for others, family members might be too far away. Whatever the reason, the fact remains the same: not everyone gets the chance to spend their day enjoying the company of their family, eating good food and unwrapping presents piled high under the Christmas tree. But, as the team at Christmas and Beyond have shown, no matter what your circumstances are, Christmas doesn’t have to be lonely. For the last twelve years, the team at Christmas and Beyond have been opening the doors of the Lithgow Christian Fellowship Centre on Longworth Street (adjacent to the Lithgow swimming pool) to everyone from the Lithgow community who needs somewhere to go on Christmas day.

Pastor Jim Abberton and the team from the Lithgow Men’s Shed show off the new sleigh built for Christmas and Beyond

Men, women, children, old or young; it doesn’t matter if people come with their family or come alone, a place can be found for them at the lunch table. “We want everyone to feel welcome,” said Pastor Jim Abberton. “We have some people who come every year, and some who only come once or twice.” Last year over 300 people attended the Christmas and Beyond lunch and took part in the festivities. This year the team of volunteers, coordinated by Pastor Jim Abberton, are preparing to do it all again. “We do our best to make sure it’s a really good day,” said Pastor Jim Abberton. “It’s about kinship at Christmas, and celebrating with others.” Christmas and Beyond is very strongly supported by the local community. The generosity of local residents, businesses and church groups means that the food is plentiful and there are gifts for those who attend. Among the many other signs of support this year, the Lithgow Men’s Shed, opted to use some funds donated to them by Westfund to support the Westfund Christmas Appeal and build a sleigh for Christmas and Beyond. “We’re very lucky,” said Pastor Jim Abberton. “We’ve had a lot of support. Without it, none of this would have been possible.” The generosity also extends beyond gifts and food. There are those who volunteer each year, giving

They prepare the hall, help get the food ready and do all the catering.” The Christmas and Beyond celebrations start early, with the doors opening for tea and coffee at 9.30am. Lunch starts at 11.30am and includes a delicious Christmas meal, desert, fruit and Christmas treats. People are welcome to come for the entire day, or just for a few hours.

Everyone is welcome to attend the Christmas and Beyond lunch. If mobility is an issue then a pick-up and drop-off service can be arranged. For more information about the day, to book a place on the bus, or to find out how you can help call Pastor Jim Abberton on 0419 638 239.

Lithgow’s young sporting champions

Photo Supplied. Shakaya and Emily with Mr John Cobb.

Eighteen of Calare’s most talented up and coming sports stars, including two hockey players from Lithgow, have been successful in receiving a Local Sporting Champions grant. Federal Member for Calare John Cobb made the announcement last week and said the $500 grant would help Shakaya Bott and Emily Thompson with the growing costs involved with playing sport, including travel, equipment and uniforms. “The Local Sporting Champions Program is an Australian Government initiative which provides funding assistance to young sportsmen and women aged 12-18 who are participating at a state, national or international level,” Mr Cobb said.

“The quality of applications for this round of funding was outstanding, with most successful applicants competing at the national level. We’re very lucky in Calare to have some of the most promising young sporting stars in this country. “Successful participants compete in a range of sports including hockey, athletics, softball, Muay Thai, equestrian and squash and come from all over the electorate including Orange, Bathurst, Parkes, Lithgow, Hartley, Forbes and Blayney. “I’d like to congratulate all those successful applicants and wish them all the very best in their sporting endeavours.”

Keep busy during the school holidays Whether you love the great outdoors or getting creative, Lithgow City Council has something for everyone these holidays. “There are so many activities and spaces for children to enjoy during the summer holidays,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Maree Statham. “The Library and Eskbank House will have creative workshops and our many parks and the pool are wonderful spaces for the community to enjoy.” January will be full of creativity with a DIY iPod Cover workshop, Loom Bands workshop and local artist “What” will be leading a group art session with tips and tricks for painting Monsters. Contact Kellie Drengenberg at the Library for more details and bookings on 6352 9100. The creative and energising Ludwina Roebuck will also be running Waste2Art workshops at Eskbank House and Museum this summer. Bookings are essential so contact Eskbank House on 6351 3557 for more information. The gardens have recovered from the snow storm so why not pack a picnic and come and explore the museum and exhibitions and have a play on Possum the locomotive. For those who want to get out and about and enjoy the beautiful summer weather, try out the new play equipment at Queen Elizabeth Park, or take a stroll around Lake Wallace and give the exercise equipment a workout. Ramble around the beautiful Lake Pillans or explore Lake Lyell. Take your camera up to the new lookouts at Hassan’s Walls and Bracey’s and Pearson’s Lookouts. Show off your skills at the skate park, or just get out in the sunshine and enjoy one of the small community parks in your neighbourhood. Of course it wouldn’t be summer without swimming. Explore one of the creeks and waterholes in our valleys, or take a dip at the pool. Make sure you take care around water and be sun safe at all times.

POSITION VACANT Pincipal Michelle Gallop and the students of Cullen Bullen Public who are wearing mufti and enjoying the last days of school for 2014

Now at the end of her first term at Cullen Bullen, it’s clear that the school’s new Principal Michelle Gallop is determined to effect change and create a new beginning at Cullen Bullen Public School. A committed, enthusiastic and successful educator with a strong focus on the future, she is guiding the school through a transition phase, with a number of new programs planned for 2015. “I want the wider community to recognise Cullen Bullen school as a place of opportunity, diversity and high quality learning programs,” she said. “Cullen Bullen school is changing. There are new programs to be implemented next year in Science, Environmental Education and Sport. We are preparing our students for the future and our programs have been developed to engage, extend and enrich them, so that they can become academically competitive in a very competitive society.” The school knows that students require high interest learning activities to engage their very active and productive minds. “We engage our students in many ways explains,” Michelle Gallop. “We have purchased Ipads for every student K-2; skeleton models and circuit sets for science based lessons; gyrocars for lunchtime play; and we’ll be resurfacing the tennis court during 2015 to promote active lifestyles. These highly engaging activities will stimulate our students to think, problem solve and create so that they are prepared for future challenges.” The students, staff and parents of Cullen Bullen are very excited by the changes at Cullen, with improvements already noted in student attendance and reading. “Our attendance rates have significantly improved which shows the students’ interest and motivation to come to school daily. This has significantly impacted

upon our reading results explains,” Tabitha Player, K-2 classroom teacher. “The Kindergarten students have exceeded state targets for reading, with students reaching reading benchmark levels of 11 (the state benchmark of success in Kindergarten is reading level 5). We are delighted with the students achievements.” “Forging partnerships with local businesses is an essential element in our transition phase,” explains Michelle Gallop. The school is being supported by local businesses including the Lithgow Men’s Shed and Bunnings, who have committed to assist with the schools transition which includes building of a cubby house by the Lithgow Men’s shed, and supplies and advice from Bunnings to support the developing of an environmental education program at the school. Committed staff, high quality teaching and learning programs, and fun and engaging activities, are promoting student achievements, which is allowing Cullen Bullen Public School’s students to shine. “We are definitely a small school undergoing big changes both academically and aesthetically,” said Mrs Gallop. The teachers at Cullen Bullen have an obvious passion for the Cullen Bullen community, and Mrs Gallop invites prospective parents in the area to look at the school in the new year to enrol their child. She believes that Cullen Bullen school is a well-kept secret saying, “The school has everything: lovely kids, supportive parents, dedicated staff and highly engaging, child-centred programs that make learning fun.”

For enrolment or program enquiries please contact Cullen Bullen Public School on 0457 553 424 or 6359 0543.

BUSINESS & TECHNOLOGY

Social media and business - what works? By Michael Todd With social media needing to be a big part of marketing plans these days, I thought I would give a snapshot on the amount of users and my take on which ones I feel are the best to use at the moment. Facebook has 13,600,000 Australian users, YouTube - 13,100,000, WordPress.com – 6,000,000, Tumblr – 4,600,000, LinkedIn – 3,900,000, Blogspot – 3,100,000, Twitter - 2,791,300, Instagram - 2,060,000, TripAdvisor – 810,000, Yelp – 1,300,000, Tinder – 1,250,000, Snapchat – 1,070,000, Flickr – 730,000, Pinterest – 370,000, Reddit – 150,000, MySpace – 290,000, Google Plus – approx 60,000, StumbleUpon – 51,000, Foursquare – 29,000, Foursquare – 29,000, Digg – 19,500, Delicious – 19,000. Facebook is the beast of social media, seeing small rises month to month and always has new users signing up. The main secondary networks, like LinkedIn, twitter and Blogging platforms have remained fairly steady recently. So what does all those usage statistics mean?

Facebook is the biggest, largest and most engaging social network in Australia, and worldwide. Many Australian users spend in excess of 20 hours+ per month on the website, far more than any other social network. If you are looking into Social Media Marketing then Facebook is where you should concentrate your efforts. Remember Facebook is not free marketing anymore. The paid ads and ‘boosts’ present so much value for your dollar, and is targeted! YouTube is the only platform that is close to on par with Facebook. The secondary networks of Twitter, LinkedIn, and blogging sites WordPress, BlogSpot and Tumblr do attract large amounts of users but have less sophisticated platforms overall. However these sites can still drive large volumes of traffic. My current social media use is Facebook, which makes sense given more than half our population is using it! I have a LinkedIn account because it’s aimed at professionals and if 3.9 million Australians are also using it, keeping in mind our professional workforce is

about 6 million people, then more than half are using LinkedIn. Twitter just doesn’t have enough Australian users to justify the time spent using it. If you want to be across multiple platforms, make sure you are using a tool that allows for one post to go onto every profile you wish. Meeting with Minister for Resources and Energy Council representatives met with the NSW Minister for Resources and Energy, the Hon. Anthony Roberts, last Monday to promote mining in the Lithgow area. Lithgow City Council recently held a meeting in relation to concerns about job losses in the area and as a result established two taskforces to look at the issues confronting the region. These were the Business Taskforce and the Mining Taskforce. The Mining Taskforce has been created to: Promote coal mining in our region; and lobby State and Federal Governments around issues confronting coal mining in the region including but not limited to, local coal supplies to Mt Piper and planning and environment concerns restricting mining. “I was really pleased with the meeting that we had with Minister Roberts and he, and local member Paul Toole, demonstrated very passionate support for our mining industry” said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham. “We are a strong region and one that still has a future with mining ahead of it and I for one am very supportive of the industry and will continue to work hard for it.” “As an example of this we still have some 25 - 35 million tonnes of coal unmined at the Baal Bone Colliery and we would hate to see this resource sterilised. Our view is that with the right technique this coal can be mined relatively easily.” “It was also very pleasing to hear the recent announcement by the NSW Government to improve and speed up the planning system in NSW for state significant developments and especially those relating to mining” said Mayor Statham. “The system as we have known it has not provided certainty to developers and we believe that there should be certainty for all when it comes to such significant

developments, especially mines. Results of applications should be certain in allowing development to proceed when predetermined criteria are met. Furthermore there should be clear targets when it comes to timelines for applications and ensuring that government agencies also meet the timelines.” “I applaud the Government for taking action on improving this process.” “The Lithgow area has several major mining proposals either presently before the Government or about to come before it where hundreds of jobs will be dependent upon the outcome. The most immediate

here is the Springvale Mine Extension.” “We will be urging the Government to ensure that this application is dealt with expediently and effectively. We do not wish for inappropriate planning decisions to be made but fair decisions must be made in a quick and efficient manner.” “The Lithgow community resoundingly supports manufacturing, mining and power generation. These have been part of our community’s culture for well over 100 years. I would suggest that these can be a part of our culture for many years to come yet” concluded Mayor Statham.

DAYS TILL CHRISTMAS

Trends in 2014 For a year that has seen job losses in the community, you would expect to see a dire effect on the real estate market with many mortgagee-in-possession auctions, but so far, if anything, we are seeing a stronger market and are hoping for the sake of local residents that this continues. By Christine Dodson, One Agency To help the local market, celebrations such as Halloween and Celebrate Lithgow are showcasing our town as a great place to live and are generating money for local businesses. In Lithgow and surrounds we have seen some encouraging signs over 2014. At One Agency we are finding new properties coming to market in the $200,000 - $300,000 price range are being snapped up and anything under $200,000 is becoming harder and harder to come by. According to realestate.com. au the average price for a 3 bedroom home as of the 1st December was $252,000. Many buyers we are talking to are saying properties they were interested in have been sold within 2 weeks or their offers are being bettered by other buyers. New estates continue to grow, with house and land packages selling well. Property developers are walking through the door on a weekly basis searching

for land that can accommodate townhouses or unit blocks. There are a vast array of buyers from all areas and walks of life. A trend we are finding is people from the Blue Mountains and Western Sydney would have the predominant interest. With Sydney prices escalating, people are finding Lithgow a great investment or an affordable place to live, especially attractive to first home buyers. There have been some negative comments surrounding people from out of town investing here. A point to take note of is that a Sydney investor can create jobs for locals and much needed rental accommodation. A property recently sold to a Sydney investor who we have recently coordinated the renovations for, as a result, we appointed a local roofer, carpenter, gardener, cleaner and carpet layer. This investor will ultimately be retiring in Lithgow, bringing more money to the town. The local rental market is strong, with many tenants in search of 3 bedroom homes within walking distance to shops and public transport. Median rental price for Lithgow is $260/week, another encouraging sign. For 2015, we hope to see demand for property continue to grow, pushing property prices up, and the town expand so that local business will flourish. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - SAT 20 - FRI 26 Pick of the Week

Christmas is just around the corner. In fact, it’s on Thursday! For those of you, like me, who feel like you’ve barely managed to get into the spirit of the season, perhaps this is the week to glut on Christmas movies, until you can’t help but be Merry... Merry Christmas! Irene

This Week’s Picks themoviedb.org

FRIDAY on PRIME7 at 8.30pm

Four Weddings and a Funeral It’s been twenty years since Four Weddings and A Funeral was a surprise hit in the cinemas, but it remains as charming, and funny as ever. By Irene Bowie-Johnson Surprise hits are few and far between, but in 1994, Four Weddings and a Funeral managed to exceed everybody’s expectations when it became an overnight success. If you’re a fan, like me, it’s easy to see why. The quirky British movie, starring Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell, isn’t your typical romance. The name alone is enough to leave the viewer wondering how to assign a genre. Is it a romance? Is it a tragedy? The answer is, of course, that it is something else altogether. Four Weddings and a Funeral is a sweet, unconventional comedy that follows Charles and his friends, all of whom seem to be singularly unlucky in love. Charles, in particular, seems to be having a difficult time finding the ‘one’. That is, until he meets

the lovely American Carrie at a wedding reception and very quickly falls in love, only to have her return to the United States soon after... Their ongoing encounters over the course of four weddings and a funeral convince him that she is the one he’s meant to be with, but no matter what he does their timing always seems to be off. Hugh Grant is the perfect actor for Charles, delivering his diffident lines - filled with stutters and pauses - to great effect. His ability to get the laugh by subverting the posh British stereotype makes you appreciate his comedic ability. This is the sort of role that he excels in, and the sort that helped him make a name for himself. This is a movie about romance and weddings with all the interesting bits left in. In it, the characters can be happy and sad, all at once. The biggest day of their lives can be the most daunting, and there’s a bite of realism that stops the romance from being sickly sweet. These are genuine people, with love and heartache, who may be shown at their most stressed and their most ecstatic, but who are real all the same. A great watch, and well worth sitting down to enjoy again once the hectic flurry of Christmas Day has passed.

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - SAT 20 - FRI 26 On Christmas Eve a skeptical young boy boards a powerful magical train that is headed to the North Pole and Santa Clause. On the journey his doubts are eroded by the wonders that he sees, and the warmth of the strangers that surround him. This is a great movie, especially for young children who are all too willing to be caught up in the magic of Christmas. The animation may not have fared brilliantly in the years since it was first made, but the story itself has many strengths of its own.

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - SAT 20 - FRI 26 In this special Harold and Kumar movie they set about to celebrate Christmas after spending years apart creating their own families, but old traditions die hard and they end up relieving some of their previous stoner mistakes. Some serious trouble is created when a prized Christmas Tree catches fire, which belonged to Harold’s father in law. On an epic mission to replace the prized tree they venture through New York and almost destroy Christmas Eve for everyone. Although an unconventional Christmas movie, it is full of great laughs. VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - SAT 20 - FRI 26 Bad Santa is a hilarious dark comedy for adults that provides some relief from the barrage of perfect Christmas movies around this time of year. Billy Bob Thornton plays Bad Santa, a conman and a thief who works as a dress up Santa to gain access to the shopping centres after hours. It’s not as simple as that however, with one child becoming obsessed with him and even managing to arouse sympathy from Bad Santa due to his rough upbringing his plans start to unravel. A very funny an interesting watch for the adults. Pick Of The Day

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - SAT 20 - FRI 26 Groundhog Day is an old favourite for many viewers. In it Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is sent, for his fourth year in a row, to cover a story about the annual emergence of the groundhog (a rat-like creature) from its hole. An emergence that is much prized by the locals for its supposed weather forecasting capabilities, but which is much derided by Phil who finds the whole event tiresome. The day is frustrating, but even worse, Phil wakes up the next day only to discover that its Groundhog Day. Again. Doomed to an eternity of Groundhog Days he tries to fond a way to escape... This movie is a great watch, and a good rewatch.

Feasting on the Belle’s renowned Devonshire teas and a sumptuous, two course buffet lunch was a gastronomic delight. Throughout the criuse the captain’s commentary, which covered interesting historical information about the river and its surrounds, was very entertaining.

Strolling the decks and admiring the magic and breathtaking landscape evoked an unforgettable experience. Towering spectacular, sunlit peaks of the Nepean Gorge were a striking scenic backdrop to the cruise and presented many magnificent photo opportunities. The twinkling chorus of bellbirds accompanied the cruise punctuated by glipmses of natural flora and native wildlife. This memorable cruise proved to be the perfect way to celebrate the conclusion of 2014’s activities for the clients who regularly rely on the services of Lithgow Community Transport.

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - SAT 20 - FRI 26 If you’re anything like me, you’ll love the community spirit of Christmas, and nothing says community more than an entirely packed audience for carols. Woolworths Carols in the Domain is Australia’s largest free Christmas concert. This year it will be turning 32, and putting on yet another great show to celebrate the season. It will be playing a few times throughout the week, but there’s nothing like catching it on Christmas Eve, when Christmas is only one sleep away. All the best acts for kids are up first, so don’t worry about keeping them up late if they decide to watch as well.

Success of the 2014 Mayor’s Christmas Appeal This year’s Mayor’s Christmas Appeal was again a huge success with the wonderful support and generosity from our local community. “I would like to thank the many members of our community for the overwhelming gift donations for this year’s Mayor’s Christmas Appeal”, said Lithgow City Mayor Councillor Maree Statham. “The many and varied donations that were received from the community were outstanding. To see the faces of our elderly folk in the four Lithgow area aged care facilities when they received their Christmas gifts last week was a wonderful

experience”. “This year we received gifts from many community individuals and groups including the Vale of Clwydd Ladies Club, Lithgow Public and Cooerwull Schools, Children’s Storeytime and the Knitters’ Group at the Lithgow Library Learning Centre” said Mayor Statham. “The monetary donations that were received were divided equally among the four aged care facilities”. In closing, Mayor Statham said “It’s great that we as a community can take the extra time and effort to provide good cheer to the elderly at Christmas time.”

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - SAT 20 - FRI 26 I try to restrain myself, when it comes to recommending Doctor Who (or you’d be hearing about it every week that it is on). But, it’s Christmas, so I’m going to let all restraint go, and recommend it one last time. There’s not much information out there for those of who like to remain unspoiled, only the tantilising teaser that says the Doctor and Clara are trapped on an arctic base under attack from terrifying monsters. Considering we last saw them parted, presumably for good, like other Doctor Who fans, I’m on tenterhooks, waiting to find out what draws them back together again...

Looking towards 2015: for those who missed out in 2014 Much of the Australian property market saw dwelling value growth in 2014, with the most recent data published by CoreLogic RP Data demonstrating an 8.5 per cent year-on-year increase in dwelling values across the combined capital cities. By Charles Tarbey, Chairman and Owner of CENTURY 21 Australasia This growth wasn’t uniform nationally, however, and the Sydney and Melbourne markets in particular lead the nation with a year-on-year increase for Sydney of 13.2 per cent so far, and Melbourne 8.3 per cent. It is my belief that this has largely been caused by undersupply in these cities, which is only now catching up as higher levels of new stock hits the market. This increased stock has taken a degree of heat out of the market, and I believe its impacts will continue headed intro 2015. When confronted with these types of statistics, it is understandable that anybody who didn’t enter the market in 2014 is sure to be feeling disappointed. These feelings may be exacerbated after witnessing the capital gains which many have realised throughout the year. Even those who have not yet seen capital gains need only be patient, as the longer they remain in their property, the more likely they will be to achieve capital gains in the future. Those who haven’t yet entered the market may be taking a very hard look at doing so in 2015, given the amount of stock now hitting the market. What I would suggest to this group is to factor the possibility of an interest rate rise into their budgeting. Though the Reserve Bank continues to communicate that there is no cash rate increase expected in the shortterm, an increase from 4.5 per cent to 5.5 per cent would have a larger impact on mortgage payers than would an increase from 10 per cent to 11 per cent, as an example. For this reason I suggest investors and home buyers alike put in place a financial buffer which prepares them for such a possibility. 2014 hasn’t yet concluded, however, and there is also a common misconception that the property market slows heading into the Christmas period. In

my experience, it can be the exact opposite. The period can be one of active transition for many Australians, as they look to move into new accommodation due to a job change in the New Year, for example, or to be closer to desired schooling locations for children. I believe we may also being to see more people moving to coastal areas during these warmer months. This may be a result of the reasonable prices we’ve been seeing for some time in the luxury holiday housing market, which I believe will begin to experience and uplift over coming months. I wish the best of luck to buyers and sellers looking to finalise their properties by the end of 2014, and am looking forward to another exciting property market in 2015. Charles Tarbey is the Chairman and Owner of CENTURY 21 Australasia. He is regarded as one of the leading property experts in Australia with a huge amount of experience and knowledge from a lifetime of real estate involvement.

Indoor plants Looking good at the moment are the Euphorbias. Euphorbias are brilliant foliage plants and will provide colour in your garden all year. When planted in groups they make a spectacular display. Euphorbias love a sunny location in a soil which drains well and are easy to grow if you have their position correct. They are tolerant to dry conditions but can also handle frosts providing colour and bulk to the garden in winter. By pruning the spent flowers they will maintain their compact shape. When you prune the stems on euphorbias they secrete an oozy white sap and it is important to wear gloves as this substance can be an irritant to your skin or eyes. There are many varieties of Euphorbia such as Silver Swan, Cragieburn, Rudolph, Tiny Tim, Blackbird and the beautiful Ascot Rainbow. With the exception of Tiny Tim most of these varieties grow to approximately 50cm in height and width.

By Barbara Moran, Good Earth Nursery I have been asked by a few people this week “What can they do to keep their indoor plants alive whilst they are on holidays. If you have someone who can call in and water them for you, that is the most ideal situation. But, if not, try sitting your plants in your laundry tub with a few inches of water in the bottom of the tub. This will help for a few weeks. Most indoor plants are in fact shade loving plants like Ferns which, in their natural habitat, grow in filtered light in the canopy of forests. Some require high levels of light while others survive well in lesser light. As a rule most indoor plants need good air circulation and drainage. For good results the main factors to consider are light, temperature, water and humidity. In the home situation indoor plants & ferns will do well in well-lit areas such as a bright room with large

windows or a sunroom or conservatory. Over-watering is the most common cause of plants dying so as a rule keep plants on the drier side. Using a balanced liquid fertilizer, half strength on a fortnightly basis is beneficial to the plants. If you have outdoor pots perhaps it is best to place these in some shade whilst you are away and sitting in a saucer of water will help.

WHAT’S ON

Voting Open for Lithgow’s Event of the Year

Where to meet Santa this Christmas? For most young children, meeting Santa at Christmas is an exciting (and sometimes daunting) event. Make sure your child gets the chance to meet Santa this year, as he appears around Lithgow before Christmas. Santa at the Valley Plaza

Two local events, Ironfest – Life on Mars and Zombie Fashion Parade have been shortlisted to receive the People’s Choice Award as part of the NSW Local Citizenship Awards to be announced on Australia Day 2015. “This year Lithgow City Council is asking the community to get involved with the NSW Local Citizenship Awards by voting for their favourite event from those nominated to receive the People’s Choice Award,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Maree Statham. “In addition to the People’s Choice Award, Council will be giving a Recognition Award to both events on Australia Day 2015 as we feel all events in our area add to the enjoyment of living here and their organisers are to be commended.” Ironfest – Life on Mars was held on the ANZAC long weekend in 2014 over two days and attracted approximately 15,000 people. It provided a range of entertainment and hands on activities with a focus on costume participation from historical warfare to modern performance cosplay. It attracted thousands

of visitors to the area who spent money in the local economy. Ironfest has grown over the years to be one of NSW’s biggest costumed events. The Zombie Fashion Parade was held at Eskbank House and Museum in October as part of the Halloween14 Block Party festivities. The fashion parade was the finale of a collection of zombie activities held at Eskbank House including; zombie special effects workshops, Lithgow High School’s creation of a zombie movie, a Main Street zombie photo shoot and an exhibition of Zombie photos in the Courtyard Gallery at Eskbank House. The event encouraged creative skills in the children and developed relationships between Eskbank House, Lithgow High School, Lithgow shops and the community. Everyone is encouraged to vote for their favourite of these two events. Go to http://council.lithgow.com/ australia-day/ to vote online and for more information on both events. Hard copies of the voting forms are available at Lithgow, Wallerawang and Portland Libraries and Lithgow City Council front counter. Voting closes Sunday 11 January 2015.

Santa will be at the Lithgow Valley Plaza over the next few weeks. Make sure you catch him on one of the following days: • Saturday 20th 10am to 2 pm • Monday 22nd 11am to 4pm (last day)

Word has it that the man in red has put aside some of his precious time to visit Lithgow children at the Lithgow Library Learning Centre, Main Street Lithgow, on Monday 22 December. Local children are encouraged to come and see Santa at the local Library, listen to a Christmas story, make some lovely Christmas craft and receive a lolly from Santa. Lithgow City Council Mayor Maree Statham said that “We all love to indulge our children a little, especially at Christmas, so come to your Library, have some fun, make some noise and create a little mess! The Library is the perfect place for exactly this!” Santa’s schedule is tight so please be at the Library by 2.30 pm on 22 December to make sure you don’t miss out.

Vertigo

Missed the gym? By Jane Coates, Anytime Fitness

If you are feeling a bit dizzy lately, it may not be the fault of too much ‘Christmas cheer’. You may have a type of Vertigo called BPPV. By Carol Stevens, Lithgow Physiotherapy There are several causes for Vertigo, and recurrent episodes of dizziness should be checked out by your doctor. One particular type of vertigo is the most common, and it can be treated by your physiotherapist. This type of vertigo is called BPPV which stands for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. Your physiotherapist will take a thorough history of your symptoms, and then perform several tests to determine if your dizziness is caused by BPPV, or by something else in which case they will refer you back to your doctor for further investigation. What is BPPV? Within the Labyrinth of the inner ear are calcium crystals called ‘otoconia’ which are usually contained within the Utricle. If these otoconia escape from the utricle and migrate into one of the semicircular canals, they will cause a sensation of dizziness. Most often, the otoconia migrate into the Posterior Circular Canal and the sensation of dizziness is triggered by backwards and forwards movements such as lying down or rolling over in bed, or by sudden head movements such as looking up, or bending to look underneath eg. a chair. What causes BPPV? BPPV can occur at any age but it is most common in people over 60. The walls of the Utricle may become thinner with age and it is easier for the otoconia to escape. Sometimes a trauma to the head such as a motor vehicle accident or whiplash injury may predispose you to getting BPPV. It can be aggravated by dehydration, stress and lack of

sleep. What are the symptoms of BPPV? The main symptom is vertigo, with a sensation of the room spinning. It is usually set off by a change in your position, and usually only last for a few seconds up to a few minutes. In severe cases, the spinning sensation will result in nausea and even vomiting. People with BPPV will also have Nystagmus which is a flicking movement of the eyes in relation to the sensation of spinning. Treatment? Once your physiotherapist has done tests to determine into which of the semicircular canals the otoconia have migrated, they can do several manoeuvres of your head and body to help the otoconia float back out of the canal. The treatment usually provides immediate relief, and your physiotherapist will teach you how to do these manoeuvres yourself at home. Vertigo is an extremely unpleasant and dangerous condition because it can lead to falls.

If you think you or a member of your family is suffering from Vertigo, consult your doctor or call us a Lithgow Physiotherapy on 6352 2288 for an assessment.

Zane Bray selected for Australian over 50’s Flash Dragon Team > Continued from page 32 Thanks to the engineering expertise of club member Paul Dowler and his assistant in club supporter Dennis Welsh both boats sit on purpose built trailers which makes launching and retrieving the boats an easy task compared to the early years of the club. These combined with the new pontoon at the boat shed area makes the Lithgow Flash Dragons one of the best equipped clubs in NSW facility wise. The Club thanks local member Paul Toole in his assisting with securing grants towards the purchase of the competition boat and the funds for the building of the pontoon. The Flash Dragons are always on the lookout for new members, whether it be for competitive racing or just a social paddle. You will always be welcome at the Lake

Wallace Boat shed on Sundays at 9 am and Wednesdays at 6 pm to give it a go to see if the sport is for you. For more information on Dragon Boating contact Pam on 0428633953, Jane on 0407990613 or Jenny on 0401324558 or just present to the shed and introduce yourself on training days. An invitation is also extended to other local sporting teams (winter and /or summer) who might like to vary their training regime to further develop their teamwork and maintain fitness by having a crack at Dragon Boating. Contact Pam, Jane or Jenny as above to discuss your requirements. The Club is also on the look out for sponsors who may like to get some exposure by supporting this rapidly growing and expansive sport.

We’ve all been there – those busy times of year when you’ve got holidays, parties, overtime at the office, car trips, fewer hours of sleep – all of which mean that working out and healthy meals are usually the last thing on your mind. Guilt ensues and it overwhelms you. So, what can you do? Let’s think about it for a second, you do need to find a way to incorporate movement a little bit every day. (Remember a walk counts as exercise!) It’s for your health and your sanity, especially during stressful times. Exercise doesn’t have to mean 90 straight minutes of cardio, strength training, and abs work at the gym – although it’s a great place to exercise in the air conditioning! It also doesn’t have to mean being drenched in sweat – though it is a lovely feeling! There are 24 hours in a day, and once you subtract 8 hours for sleep, you’re left with 16 hours that you can get some movement in there. So if you can’t get to the gym, try adding some of these exercises throughout your day. Do 30 squats right after you wake up Do a set of 12 push ups against the counter while you’re waiting for your coffee to brew or your bread to toast Go up and down the stairs 10 times before you leave for work or use the stair when you get to work This method isn’t the way to lose (up to) 1kg a week, but it keeps you active and during a busy week it’s enough to keep your stress and gym-guilt levels in check and your mind sane. Your health is about more than just the size of your waistline. Being healthy is about a long-term lifestyle, not the image in the mirror or the number on the scale. You need to eat healthy, sleep well, stay active, and find happiness in life in order to be a healthy, fit person. Muscles and six-pack abs are difficult to achieve – don’t let anyone (or TV commercials) fool you – and they are not the definition of being healthy and fit. Staying active is about keeping yourself healthy by being able to walk, lift what you need to, bend over without pain, climb up stairs without being winded, and being strong enough to take care of yourself. Very few things are either all “good” or “bad,” and the words themselves will only hurt your selfesteem and mess with your mind. If you’re hungry for lasagne, make a healthier version and portion a small piece for yourself and freeze the rest for when another craving hits. Health and fitness is much more than hours spent sweating at the gym and much more than looking ripped, cut, sexy, or whatever you think you want to look like. Remember that your health and fitness is about doing little things every day to better yourself. It’s about a lifestyle. It’s about enjoying food, but not going overboard. It’s about doing something active every day, even if it’s broken up into 10 increments. And it’s about remembering that your health – your life – is so much more than muscles and pants sizes; it’s about being healthy and fit enough to enjoy what you’ve been given and having respect for yourself.

Zane Bray selected for Australian over 50’s Flash Dragon Team By Gary Hoye The Lithgow area, and in fact the Western Region, have their first Australian Representative in Dragon Boating with the announcement that Zane Bray from the Lithgow Flash Dragons Dragon Boat Club has been selected in the Australian Over 50’s Dragon Boat Team. Zane will be competing at the World Dragon Boat Championships to be held in Welland Canada in August 2015. Zane’s Australian Team selection follows on from his selection in the New South Wales State Regional Dragon Boat team which took the honours as the premier Australian Regional Dragon Boat team at the recent Australian Titles in Brisbane some months back. The NSW Regional team raced the best Australian teams to take gold, silver and bronze in the final series and for their efforts became the reigning Australian Regional Dragon Boat Team. The team comprises 22 of the best dragon boat paddlers selected from outside the metropolitan areas and selection in this team is all the more impressive given he was in competition to win his place in the boat against paddlers more than half his age. Enthused by his success in the State Team, Zane embarked on a rigorous training program in order to trial for the Australian Team over the weekend of the 15th and 16th of November in Sydney, culminating in his selection for the Australian Over 50’s side to compete at the 2015 World Championships. Zane’s selection is a testament to his dedication to the sport, his supreme fitness and his highly developed paddling technique.

Grant Tattersall with Zayn Bray

As with many of these teams the trip is self funded and anyone who could make a contribution to Zane’s expenses in the form of sponsorship is encouraged to contact him on 63554250 to discuss the details. Sponsorship would be greatly appreciated by all associated with Dragon Boating as it is not everyday our area can claim an Australian Representative The Lithgow Flash Dragons also boast two other representative paddlers with Noni Lawless and Grant

Tattersall gaining selection in the Western region Dragon Boat Team in 2013. The Lithgow Dragon Boat Club is the envy of most regional clubs with a fantastic set up at Lake Wallace Wallerawang. They have managed to purchase and immaculately prepare a competition approved racing boat as well as a smaller 10 seater training boat. Continued Pg 31 >
