BilliGreen: one year on

T

his month BilliGreen, Billingshurst’s villagewide environmental group, celebrates its first anniversary. It was started by two locals who were aware that more people had come to appreciate the nature on their doorstep during lockdown. They were also keen to work with others to find solutions to the ongoing climate crisis.     During our first year we’ve started a number of successful projects: Single Use Plastic Recycling. Our recycling point at The Chapel (between Laker’s Meadow and The High Street) has collected over 200kg of plastics for recycling, all hand-sorted by a dozen volunteers. This includes items such as crisp packets, small bottle tops and cheese packets. Unfortunately, we can’t take all plastics. See the full list at www.sussexgreenliving.co.uk/single-use-plasticrecycling-in-Billingshurst Making Space for Nature. We are working with parish, district and county councils to establish a network of areas with a reduced mowing policy throughout the village. These areas of longer grasses and wildflowers support biodiversity, attract pollinators (e.g. bees), reduce pollution and lower flood risk. The Parish Council has given us a grant for signage, explaining why the grass has been left long. Other landowners are coming on board, with ‘rewilded’ areas

at The Chapel, the Women’s Hall and the Kings Arms pub. Why not take a look at what the pub is doing while enjoying a post-lockdown drink?! Birdboxes. We have installed eleven birdboxes spread across The Chapel, the Women’s Hall and Burnt Row Wood at Jubilee Fields. The boxes were sponsored by BilliGreen members and purchased from Chestnut Tree House Hospice, raising nearly £100 for them. We have plans to put up bat boxes in the autumn. Coming Soon. As lockdown eases we are planning a community litter pick, joined by our local MP Jeremy Quin. We are supporting the planting of an Apple Tree Theatre for young people in Station Road Gardens. And we are working with the Horsham Youth Eco Forum who are staging ‘Beyond Be-leaf’ an environmental day for teenagers, hopefully in July.     We have also joined the Billingshurst Community Partnership to make more contacts in the village to work on joint projects. To find out more and get involved email BilliGreenGroup@gmail.com or join our nearly 200 followers on Facebook.
