T

he Armistice Centenary was celebrated with just the right balance of sombre style last month in Billingshurst. The Remembrance Day Service at the War Memorial was extremely well attended (see page 38). Several ‘There but not there’ silhouette statues were erected in the village (pages 27 and 39). Several shop windows had spectacular displays, for example Austens and Age UK charity shop. And many giant poppies overhung the high street. The festive season is here again with plenty of shows, concerts and pantomimes to go to. See the various ads and many more in the What’s On pages. Merry Christmas! s in previous years the Billingshurst Lions Club will be visiting most of the Billingshurst district with Santa’s Sleigh, starting on 5th December. Because of the size of the area we represent we are unable to visit every property and, in the villages, we do concentrate on the main centres of population. In the areas we visit we make door-to-door collections, play carols as we approach the houses, and we always have a Father Christmas distributing (healthy!) treats for the children. This year’s Pantomime: Snow White

eautiful but evil Queen Maligna has usurped the throne of Sylvania on her husband's death. Told by the magic mirror that her stepdaughter, Princess Millie (known to her friends as Snow White), is more beautiful than her, Maligna is consumed with jealousy and determines to kill her. Will Snow White’s seven friends and the dashing Prince Michael be able to save her? All will be revealed… Yes, it’s Panto time again in Barns Green! And this year it is Snow White. Cast members from the Barns Green Players have just started rehearsing in preparation for what we are sure will be another great show. There will be a total of 6 shows performed over two weekends in the Barns Green Village Hall in January. The shows will be on Friday 18th (evening), Saturday 19th (afternoon and evening), Friday 25th (evening), and Saturday 26th (afternoon and evening). Warren Blanchard is the Director this year. “I am so pleased with the cast that we have for this year’s Panto and we are all determined to put on a great show for you. Snow White is one of the traditional pantomimes but there are plenty of new twists and we

Murder Mystery in Billingshurst It has been a year of positive changes for Bilingshurst Dramatic Society and the group is busy planning for the New Year. The Society’s latest play, A Trip to Scarborough, saw an audience of over 400 people coming to Fishers Farm theatre. For many this was their first time at a BDS show. We always welcome new members for both onstage and behind the scenes roles. In our next production in February, Murder at Parbrook Grange, a murder has been committed but just who did it, when, where and how? Think of the game of Cluedo in the flesh, plus a fish and chip supper and it looks like an evening worth going out for. Watch this space for more details! Caro Anderson

have lots of singing, dancing and jokes. All we need is for lots of people to come along to shout and scream as loud as they can. I love the interaction that we have with our pantomime audiences and I’m sure this year will be better than ever”. The afternoon performances are particularly suitable for the very youngest children. There are singalongs and sweets for the kids and opportunities for the audience to join in with the fun. For the evening performances there is a licensed bar serving a variety of alcoholic and soft drinks as well as sweets. The afternoon performances begin at 2pm and evening performances at 7.30pm. If you are regulars at the Barns Green Players Panto you will know just what a terrific show they put on and if you haven’t been before you are in for a real treat. Tickets cost just £12 for adults and £8 for children. (All tickets on both Saturday evenings are £12.00.) There is a special price of just £8 for all tickets on Friday 18th January. We look forward to welcoming you in January for some great fun and entertainment. Tickets are available from the box office: (01403) 731566 or online: www.barnsgreenplayers.co.uk. NIgel Currie

These festive Scandinavian cookies, powdered with sugar & nuts, are a Christmas delight METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 200°C / Gas mark 6. 2. Cream the butter and sugar together thoroughly. Add flour, salt, vanilla and pecans, and mix well. Cover dough and chill for half an hour. 3. Form dough into small balls (about 1 inch / 2.5cm diameter). If the dough seems too crumbly don’t be tempted to add water or the resulting cookies will be hard, just let the heat from your hands gradually bring it all together. 4. Place 2 inches / 5cm apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake until set but NOT brown (8-10 minutes). 5. Allow to cool for 3 minutes before removing from baking sheet, then roll in icing sugar. When completely cool, roll in the icing sugar again. They make lovely festive handmade gifts in pretty boxes.

Crime / Out and about Christs Hospital Choral Society: Christmas Concert The Christmas concert by Christ’s Hospital Choral Society is one of the highlights of the festive season. The school’s Chapel setting is atmospheric, the music is sublime, and the audience joining in with certain pieces makes the experience even more exciting. After the concert mince pies and wine is served in the Dining Hall, finishing off the night beautifully. This year, the Choral society is delighted to support Medical Detection Dogs. This charity works with a dog’s incredible sense of smell; one branch train dogs to assist people with life-threatening conditions, while the other branch works with dogs to identify and isolate cancer in samples, with a view to develop an easy, cheap, and reliable tool to diagnose the disease early. Do come, listen, and join in; Thursday 13th December, 7.30pm, The Chapel, Christ’s Hospital School, RH13 0YP. It is best to book this very popular concert; tickets from Choir members, CH Box Office, (01403) 247434 (am only), but tickets may still be available at the door. Esther Clark

Home from Home: Life at Roffey Camp in WW1 Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, open now until 19th January 2019

T

o mark the centenary of the signing of the Armistice on 11th November 1918, Horsham Museum & Art Gallery have chosen to highlight the story of Roffey Camp. Using contemporary photography, film footage, the camp newspaper, and locally-produced posters, the display aims to highlight the life of the camp and its relationship to the local area. The outbreak of war saw around 1,500 young soldiers from London arriving in Horsham. The population of Horsham in 1914 was a mere 11,500, and therefore the addition of 1,500 young men would have been a major event. By early March 1915, work was completed at the new Roffey Camp and the battalion were moved into new, purpose-built accommodation. Roffey Camp stretched from the Norfolk Arms to Forest Road, with the main entrance on Crawley Road. The camp was home to numerous groups of soldiers and remained in use until 1919.

12

The human cost of the First World War was enormous, and is still felt to this day. The photographs and ephemera in the exhibition demonstrate the duality of the war. Lively, active young men signed up to do their bit for King and Country, with the support of the nation. Gradually, as the reality of the brutal conflict became clear, the joy and national pride so visible in these images began to fade. The First World War serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of war, and the tragedy of these young lives cut short in their prime. Home from Home: Life at Roffey Camp in WW1 runs from 6th November 2018 to 19th January 2019 Admission is free of charge. Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm. For more information see www.horshammuseum.org. Rachel Weller, Administration Assistant, Horsham Museum & Art Gallery

Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 Programme available now!

E

xcitement is now building just two months before the launch of Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 with celebrations showcasing local arts and heritage across all of the Horsham District. The key to all the fun and entertainment is the 56-page programme covering January to June 2019. The programme, which includes full events listings, is available free and available now from leisure centres, museums, surgeries, libraries with many more currently being distributed. Additionally, the online events diary is also now available with its exhaustive listings of over 150 supplementary Year of Culture Fringe events. Details can be found at www.hdculture2019.co.uk. Commenting on the events line up Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure Cllr Jonathan Chowen said, “2019 is set to be a complete game changer of a year for the people of Horsham District and beyond with an unprecedented range of unique cultural experiences to enjoy. “The line-up of events is innovative, exciting, and often interactive, creating opportunities for people not just to sit back and watch, but to actually perform and take part themselves. “Our District is brimming with creativity, talent and energy and it has been great to see all the Year of Culture ideas emerge throughout 2018. But now is the time to really get involved, pick up the official programme or look online at the hundreds of events planned, many of them free. There has never been a better time to engage with our heritage, history, the Arts, dance and much more.” Take a look at just some of the highlights… For starters there will be 38 unique events which are being grant funded by the Council as part of the 12 month celebration. These projects are as diverse as the first ever Horsham Film Festival and first ever Sussex Comedian of the Year contest, the return of the District

Schools Dance Festival, a wheelbarrow race in Steyning, a ukulele festival in Ashington, light projections across the whole district and the opportunity to write poems to help create a Poets’ Corner in Horsham Park, to name just a few. Larger projects, such local artist Sarah Duffield’s specially commissioned paintings to encapsulate our district and outdoor Shakespeare theatre – A Midsummmer Night’s Dream at Knepp are also taking place. Check out the full list at www.hdculture2019.co.uk. Patron of the Horsham District Year of Culture, world renowned author and local resident Julia Donaldson MBE says, “There’s so much going on with this project I’ve found it hard to choose my favourites. I know I’ll enjoy Steyning Book Lovers’ Week and the promenade theatre piece, A Norman’s Tale, in Bramber. And the writing and sculptural project at Warnham Local Nature Reserve is definitely tempting me. I hope residents will really involve themselves in the Year of Culture and tell all their friends what’s going on, so that we can welcome more people to the area and show off just how much we have to offer.” A second programme will be available from May 2019 to cover July to December. If you would like to join up as a Friend of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 to enjoy unique benefits visit www.hdculture2019.co.uk/friends-ofhorsham-district-year-of-culture-2019. You can follow the Year of Culture on Twitter @HDculture2019, Instagram @HDculture2019 and on Facebook, facebook.com/HDculture2019 or sign up for the regular newsletter via www.hdculture2019.co.uk. Billingshurst Lions support Sussex Oakleaf

A

s a result of a very successful golf day Billingshurst Lions have made a donation of £4,300 to Sussex Oakleaf. The following is a statement from the charity. “Large donation aims to improve youth mental health. “Be OK, a mental health service for people aged 16-25 in mid-Sussex, Crawley and Horsham, is thrilled to be presented with a cheque for £4,300 from Billingshurst & District Lions Club in time for this year’s World Mental Health Day. “Members of the Lions Club attended a group for young people organised by Be OK where they were given the chance to meet clients and present a cheque (photo). The money raised will go towards providing a range of activities and workshops to Be OK clients. “With half of all mental health problems being established by the age of 14 and three-quarters by the age of 24, Be OK provides a valuable and much needed service within the local area. “The service, which is run by mental health charity, Sussex Oakleaf, provides free and confidential support which promotes independence and helps to build resilience. Clients of the service were given the chance to decide how the funds could best be spent. Among the suggestions were cooking workshops, kayaking and rock climbing. All the activities will be aimed at reducing

isolation and improving the mental health and confidence of the young people involved.” Andrew Viall, President of the Billingshurst & District Lions Club said, “We are very pleased to support the Be OK service for young people in Sussex. We are particularly happy that these new activities have been chosen by the participants themselves and we wish them every success for their future” Following the donation, Be OK Project Coordinator, Ewa Jednaszewska-Rana said, “Sussex Oakleaf’s vision is for a world where people with mental illness and mental health issues are inspired and supported to fulfil their potential and to live their lives as independently as possible. Donations like this help to take us one step nearer to achieving our vision. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated or helped to collect donations.” If you are struggling with your mental health and would like to find some support, then you can get in touch with Sussex Oakleaf on (01444) 459517 or by visiting www.sussexoakleaf.org.uk. Book reviews / About the house

A Good Read December’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby The Bedlam Stacks – Natasha Pulley If you like a novel that feels like a luxurious meal in a restaurant where you can enjoy each course at a slow pace, then this is the novel for you. This slowburner is in no rush to reach its conclusion and invites you to indulge in the world of 19th century Peru. Pulley skilfully mixes facts and historical fiction with fantasy as the novel turns in a way that you don’t expect. It is 1859 and Merrick Tremayne is asked to undertake an expedition to Peru by the East India Company. As an ex-opium smuggler, and a gardener, they want him to supervise the search for cinchona trees. The bark of these trees produces quinine, a much sought-after treatment for malaria. Despite knowing that it is a suicide mission, since others have tried and failed, he agrees to go to get away from his miserable life at home. Once in Peru he travels to a mysterious village, given the name Bedlam Stacks. Three large pillars of rock rise into the sky with homes and shops built on to the sides of them. And this is where fact (the expedition did take place, led by Clement Markham, who accompanies the fictitious Merrick) and historical fiction meets fantasy and you realise that the novel is not going where you thought it might. A line of salt that no one can cross, statues that move, and a priest with knowledge far beyond his years. What will Merrick discover, and will it ultimately be more valuable to him than the precious quinine?

The Enchanted Wood – Enid Blyton Enid Blyton is an author that adults of a certain age will be familiar with and now her books are finding a new generation of readers. While not as well-known as her Famous Five series, or any of her boarding school series, this is nevertheless well loved and fondly remembered. Woods can be mysterious places, full of old trees. Some are older and bigger than others and one such tree is the Magic Faraway Tree. When siblings Joe, Frannie, and Beth move to the outskirts of the wood, they go exploring and discover the tree. Unable to see the top they decide to climb it and find that it is inhabited by many magical creatures. There is Silky the fairy, Dame Washalot who spends her time washing laundry and throwing the dirty water down the side of the tree, and Moonface, a happy man with a face like the moon who befriends the children. At the very top of the tree is a ladder and here is the most magical thing about the tree. Each time that the children visit they can climb the ladder and visit a magical land from the Land of Birthdays to the Land of Do-As-YouPlease. Some are pleasant, some are not, but whatever they are the children know that they must not stay too long lest the land moves on to another tree in another wood. Just as the children never know what they will find at the top of the tree, neither does the reader. All the reader knows is that adventure will be had, and their imagination ignited.

Mary How Trust 30th Anniversary Appeal – local support makes the difference

T

he Mary How Trust was founded 30 years ago to offer health screenings for the early detection of cancer and other serious illnesses. The charity makes its health screenings available to people from all walks of life, asking for a donation based on ability to pay, rather than charging a fee. To mark its 30th anniversary, the charity launched its £30 For 30 Years appeal to raise funds for two important projects: a new ultrasound scanner, and diagnostic supplies for its blood laboratory. Thanks to a warm response from across the community, the charity has reached its first target of £30,000 for the new ultrasound scanner, which will use the latest technology to offer even more detailed health information. Fundraising Manager, Roanne Moore, says, “If you’ve made a donation to our 30th Anniversary appeal, thank you. You’ve joined generous donors from across the county and helped us reach the Phase One target. Our sonographers are already testing the latest ultrasound scanners. Early detection saves lives!” A major award from the Big Lottery Fund launched the second phase of the appeal, which will raise £30,000 for diagnostic supplies for the charity’s

laboratory. Roanne explains, “The lab is at the heart of all we do, and means your blood tests can be analysed quickly and accurately. It costs £30,000 a year to keep the laboratory running, and it’s wonderful to have the support of the Big Lottery Fund to help us on our way. “There’s still time to get involved! Would you consider joining our 30th Anniversary with a gift of £30 today? We’re nearly there – will you help us reach our target? If you can make a gift to the appeal, you’ll help us give a lifeline to local families. With your help, we can continue to spot cancer and other illnesses early!” The charity is holding a variety of fundraising events in aid of its Anniversary appeal, and is encouraging its supporters to get involved with some fun and simple ‘30’-themed fundraising ideas that can be found on its website. If you would like to donate to the appeal, or find out more about how you can get involved, or request a health screening, please visit www.maryhowtrust.org. “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!” say Billingshurst’s Fire-fighters. But with a note of caution…

F

rom everyone at Billingshurst Fire Station, we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. This year is coming to an end, and we hope you enjoy getting ready for the festive period. It’s been a very busy year for us, with a wide range of fire calls. Well done to all the crew for being on-call during 2018 and keeping the community safe. It takes dedication and hard work to keep an on-call fire station available. At this time of the year, road traffic collisions normally increase due to change in weather conditions and also people deciding to drink and drive. No doubt many people reading this will be attending a Christmas party, please book a taxi in advance, don’t ever think it’s OK to drive home after a few drinks. The impact it has on others is truly devastating and we are the ones that have to attend these

incidents when they could be avoided. Please ‘drive to arrive’ every time you step foot inside your vehicle, keeping the distance from the vehicle in front and driving to suit the weather conditions. We’ve attended more fatal RTCs this year than ever before. We would like to take the time to thank everyone once again for attending the two charity car washes this year. Next year we will be doing the same, as well as an open day. This is a chance for you to come and see what we do, take a look around the fire station, try our fire kit on, plus much more. We hope you all have a lovely Christmas. Twitter: @Station49Fire Facebook: Billingshurst Fire Station Dan Game, Billingshurst Fire Station Photo: Billingshurst Fire-fighters have attended more fatal RTCs in 2018 than any other year.

There but Not There – A tribute to the Fallen

Billingshurst Community Speedwatch

1,117,077 Commonwealth Service men and women were killed during the First World War. The Council purchased two ‘Silent Soldier’ silhouettes from The Royal British Legion to display as a mark of respect to those brave service personnel who fell in WWI, leading to the Armistice in November 1918. The soldiers arrived in late October and were placed on the Billingshurst Village Green leading up towards St. Mary’s Church along with poppies on the lampposts through the village as well. We felt this was a fitting tribute to highlight the sacrifice all men, women and families gave across our nation during the First World War.

The Community Speedwatch Group are always looking for more volunteers. If speeding vehicles in our local area is something that bothers you, could you spare some time to join the group? To find out more about the Community Speedwatch scheme, please call 07719 009443.

The Parish Council could fund the approximately £2,000 cost but the Council would like to know from other local residents first that they think this is a good idea. Please let us have your thoughts.

Hello & Welcome The Parish Council is delighted to welcome its newest employee Roland Clark who has recently commenced work as a Litter Warden/Odd Job Person. Roland joins our dedicated team of staff and will work alongside fellow Litter Warden Colin helping to keep our local areas clean and tidy.

Did you know that there is a Dementia Café held at the United Reformed Church hall on the second Saturday of each month from 10.00ammidday? The café is for people with dementia and their family, friends and carers to call in and share a cup of tea, coffee and homemade cakes and have a chat in a safe environment. All are welcome to attend.

Final Year of Council Have you ever thought about becoming a Parish Councillor? The current Council’s four-year term ends in May 2019; if there are more than 15 candidates, an election will be held. Being a Parish Councillor is a great way to give something back to your community, to help have a say on its future and to represent the views of local people. Please keep an eye out for more information in the coming months in Village Tweet and on the Council’s website and social media pages. Please do consider putting yourself forward. Upcoming Meetings (December) 6th: Planning & Environment Committee 12th: Neighbourhood Plan Working Party 19th: Billingshurst Centre and F&GP Committees

The Weald School at Greenpower Finals

O

n 5th and 6th October The Weald Greenpower Car team took part in the Greenpower International Finals at Rockingham Motor Speedway. The team took three cars (Bluebird, Purple Predator and X) with 15 students to the event and shared a pit with ex-Weald students and their car Firebird. Day One was warm and sunny. A race for older students (Year 11+) featured Jonathan Quigley from Year 11 driving Firebird and Cameron Flowers from Year 12 driving X. Firebird and another car were fighting for the lead for several laps. Firebird looked strong for a win but a puncture with two laps to go meant Jonathan had to settle for 2nd place while X achieved a solid 10th place. The weather on Day Two was dreadful – pouring rain and driving winds – so everyone got cold and wet. Our younger students (Year 7-11) took part in two races but despite good starts and steady

progress they fell back due to dead batteries. The older students fared a little better. Firebird was in 2nd place for most of the race until the batteries died on the leading car with two laps to go handing Firebird the win. Unfortunately X succumbed to the wet weather and suffered an electrical problem after 11 laps. Well done to the whole team and many thanks to everyone who helped us to take part in the final. After the race Keith Russell, our team manager, announced that he would be stepping down after 10 years of volunteering. He has made a very significant contribution and we thank him for his dedication. The Weald Greenpower team recently won the ‘Friend To The Environment’ award at the West Sussex County Times Community Awards. Kaen Quigley Photo: Jonathan Quigley’s Firebird wins on Day Two

Community / About the house *

Let’s fly… let’s fly away! John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

T

he winter season is upon us and I’m sure you are already suffering from a surfeit of adverts and jingles that loudly herald that Christmas is nearly here. So, to quote Monty Python, “Now for something completely different…” I had a rather strange travel experience a while ago that was exasperating and annoying, but with the passage of time has mellowed into one of those happenings that you look back on with somewhat fond memories. We were off on holiday and had arrived at Gatwick early in the morning with the thought of the sun’s warmth already firmly fixed in our minds. We enjoyed a good walk… backwards and forwards in the slalom roped area that leads to the check in. Then the further adventure of search and inspection where you shuffle through, holding up your trousers while your belt, shoes and hand luggage enjoy a ride through the X-ray machine. Finally a hearty breakfast at Garfunkel’s set us up for the early flight. The flight information boards assured us that our flight was on time and we would soon be called to the departure gate. So, with just time to peruse the headlines on the new day’s paper, we were duly called to the gate dead on time. Any of you who are familiar with Gatwick will know that this can – and in this case, did – entail a hike that begins to feel like you are being taken halfway to your destination on foot. At last we got to the gate and once more presented our documents. We boarded. A lovely stewardess, after a brief glance at our passes, pointed us down the long tube of the plane’s fuselage to show us the direction of our seats. In which other direction they could have been I have never figured out, as to have gone the other way we would have had to go through a door and been restricted to two seats, a lot of knobs and dials, and a large front window. However, we duly followed her instructions and with a smile of appreciation headed down the aisle to our seats. We sat. The plane was loaded, doors shut and engines started. We started to move back from the stand with the aid of an airport tractor. We stopped, the tractor was unhitched, and under our own power we slowly moved forward, then we stopped again… and so did the engines. A very smooth male voice came over the speakers. “Sorry folks. This is your Captain speaking. We have a red warning light showing that shouldn’t be showing, so we’ve called for an engineer.” The door at the front of the plane was opened and after some twenty minutes or so steps were pushed up to the door. Up came a couple of men in overalls. They disappeared into the cockpit. After a while they reappeared looking quite pleased

30

with themselves and departed the plane. “All’s well folks. False alarm. As soon as we can get a new clearance slot we shall be off. Many apologies”. Steps were removed, doors were closed. Engines started. After a long pause of another twenty minutes or so we started to roll. We all gave a great sigh of relief. Outside rain starts to splatter on the window. Just what we needed to reassure us we were going to a far better place! We stopped again. Once more the door was opened, steps rolled up, and an engineer welcomed to the cockpit, accompanied by various levels of groans from the waiting passengers. The man soon left and an announcement was forthcoming. This time there was a distinct tang of aggravation in the once mellow tones. In fact it was obvious that he was, like us, reaching a limit to his patience. Apparently a more severe fault had been discovered that in the light of the failing weather, would cause maximum disruption to our travel plans… the wipers wouldn’t work! I know, I know… only in England. Despite a detailed and lengthy search of Gatwick’s vast complex no spare pair of wipers, or whatever it was that refused to work them, could be found. We would have to decamp and board a spare plane on the other side of the airport. We descended the steps, mounted a waiting coach and while the other passengers finished exiting the plane we watched the handlers starting to remove our suitcases from the stricken beast. A sad sight as the multi-million pound machine sat silent on the tarmac because its wipers wouldn’t work! The new plane looked solid enough, so we boarded it with renewed hope in our hearts. There were three of us, and we had booked the three seats right at the back of the first plane. We moved down the plane – this time we even managed it without the helpful directions – and sat with a gasp of satisfaction on the last three seats on the right-hand side. A couple of minutes later we were accused by another family of sitting in their seats. Seat numbers were consulted. Oh dear… this plane had one row less seats on it. We stood like lost souls as the rest of the plane filled and felt the steam building as our frustration and tempers approached rupture point. It was the lovely stewardess with the compass needle finger who came to the rescue. She soothed our fevered brows and, finding us seats that were not too far apart, she went one stage further by announcing that the drinks were “On The House”. Well, one drink each was! I must say the airline did give us compensation at a further date, so we can’t say they didn’t do their best and it did add a great talking point for the rest of the holiday. And provide a story on this page! So, if you’re off soon on a flight, be prepared. You can never be sure just what’s around the corner to liven up the trip! Oh, and look out for that pointing finger too! John Nash

Christmas Dreams

Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…

O

f all the sheep on the farm, the wildest by far was Anna-Georgia. She had resisted all approaches to human contact. Unlike the other sheep she would not eat sheep crunchies from the hand. Standing back she had always derided the others in the flock for being so easily bought. She deigned only to chomp them from a bucket, and then only skittishly when one of the others came around. One day in early December, she was chatting with the others and Siobhan, the oldest, was talking about a once upon a sheep time when Lily from the farm went to church to be part of the nativity play at Christmas. Evidently Lily was a big hit with all the boys and girls. She’d had her own pen with lots of lovely treats and hay. According to Siobhan, Lily had been the star of the show. (Village Tweet, December 2011.) Anna-Georgia ruminated on her grass… and this story. “Do you think it’s true?” she questioned Luna and Freya. “Don’t know. Don’t care,” they replied in unison barely lifting their heads. Amy, her cousin, and Elle and Ethel their mothers weren’t sure. Anna-Georgia: “I “Could be,” they said. “And wouldn’t it be nice if one of you were chosen to go this year.” “Us!” squeaked Amy and Anna-Georgia, “No way!” “What about me?” suggested Aaron. “No,” his mother said. “Your horns would scare everybody. Besides, there didn’t seem to be any rams in that story, only ewes and a lamb or two.” Aaron stomped away. Ethel continued. “And as you two are too big to be lambs anymore you’d have to be chosen for a ewe.” Amy and Anna-Georgia thought about it some more. “You’re too wild,” Amy said to Anna-Georgia. “So it would have to me who was chosen.” At dusk fell they all went to sleep. That night Anna-Georgia dreamed she had been the chosen one. Nanny made sure she was pretty and clean, her silver wool shining and her head and

32

feet as black as coal. Nanny put a sparkling red wreath around her neck. Anna-Georgia let herself be led quietly to the trailer, got in and travelled from the farm to the church. From there Nanny put a sparkly red lead on her and together they walked into church. It was beautiful there. Candles were flickering, casting long shadows. In front, there were children dressed up and Anna-Georgia came into the centre and lay down at the back in the hay surrounded by the children. “Oh, she’s lovely!” admired everyone. Anna-Georgia was very proud to be there. They sang and talked. As the play went on she snoozed a bit because she was so comfortable. And it seemed to her that there was other singing high up and a bright light shone all around. AnnaGeorgia lifted her head and saw what she somehow knew to be angels, singing with crystal clear voices. Then before her very eyes she saw a little baby boy. And she knew, she really knew that this baby boy was really the star of the dreamed a dream” show. He looked at her and smiled. “Ah, there you are my lovely AnnaGeorgia. How pleased I am to see you.” Her heart glowed with delight. “Thank you,” he continued, “for putting aside your wildness to be here with us tonight. That is a wonderful gift. You are a very gracious ewe.” And he touched her woolly black head. She felt warm all over and absolute joy filled every inch of her. In her dream Anna Georgia didn’t remember what came next or how she got back to the farm, but after a very frosty night she was puzzled why the wool on her back didn’t sparkle with frost like the others and… there was just the tiniest piece of red tinsel around her neck. Everyone on the little farm wishes you the joy of Christmas. Yvonne Fleece

Equine Partners CIC calls out for votes to bag a share of Tesco’s bag fund

E

quine Partners CIC, based in Wisborough Green, is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores awarded to local community projects. Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. Equine Partners CIC is one of the groups on the shortlist. Our lovely big barn is in urgently in need of refurbishment. We support families when life is tough and use it for family Equine Assisted Learning sessions when the weather is wet or cold. It needs a new floor surface, a new metal shed to provide a toilet cubicle, large pens so the horses can relax when they are not working with a family and some equipment for families to use. These will help us make a welcoming and fun place for families to visit. The refurbishment will make a huge difference to the families who visit us. Voting is open in Horsham and Broadbridge Heath Tesco stores in November and December, customers will cast their vote using a token given to

them at the check-out in store each time they shop. Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered over £60 million to more than 18,000 projects across Britain. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding. Alec Brown, Head of Community at Tesco, said, “Bags of Help is such a special scheme because it’s local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community.” Groundwork’s National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said, “Bags of Help continues to enable local communities up and down Britain to improve the local spaces and places that matter to them. The diversity of projects that are being funded shows that local communities have a passion to create something great in their area. We are pleased to provide support and encouragement to help local communities thrive.” Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more visit www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp. Liz Hibberd Equine Partners CIC

Pets / About the house

Joint aid – doggy aches and pains

J

ust like us humans our dogs can suffer from stiff, aching joints. Some breeds can be predisposed to problems such as hip and elbow dysplasia. Joint disease can be hereditary, such as hip dysplasia. When buying a puppy make sure both parents have been fully health tested and have had hips and elbows scored for signs of any problems. The Kennel Club and breed clubs will have more info on this process and be able to advise on acceptable scores for breeding dogs. Large breed puppies can grow too fast and become too heavy for their immature joints. Adult dogs put on too much weight when overfed, and obesity adds strain to the joints and makes it painful to exercise. Choosing the correct diet or adding jointsupporting dietary supplements can slow down the progression of arthritis or even prevent joint problems in your pets. Some joint problems are caused by trauma with the joint getting damaged leading to loss of synovial fluid to lubricate the surfaces and this leads to pain and inflammation. Wear and tear in older dogs often leads to joint degradation and the onset of arthritis. Joint disease almost always develops as a result of injury much earlier in life, even when your dog is a puppy. Over exercise, jumping too high, and running too hard before a puppy’s bones and joints are mature can injure the joints so supervise your young dog’s exercise routine. Signs of joint pain can include difficulty getting up after lying down for a period of time, becoming reluctant to jump into or out of the car, limping and general stiffness in one or more limbs, constant licking of a joint, not wanting to be petted as much as usual and awkwardness in movements. If your dogs are showing one or more of these symptoms it would be beat to get diagnoses from your vet. Arthritis and joint problems develop into a vicious circle. When it hurts to move, dogs stop exercising and so they gain more weight which puts increased stress on the joints. Exercise also ‘feeds’ the joint by pumping natural lubrication into the area. Gentle exercise keeps joints limber and healthy, helps slim down pudgy dogs, and just helps them feel better. Joints stiffen after naps, so it can help to provide a heated bed or gentle massage each morning to get your dog limber before a walk. Once diagnosed there are things we can do to help; in very severe cases your vet will prescribe antiimmflammatories and painkillers to make your pet more

comfortable. For mild to moderate cases there are natural products on the market to help support the dogs joints from nutritional angle. And things such as controlling the dog’s weight – obesity is a major contributing factor to joint issues – and providing the right exercise will help your pet stay comfortable and pain free too. When looking for a supplement for your dog’s joints there are some key active ingredients that can have a soothing effect the first being green lipped mussel – found in the waters of New Zealand. Green lipped mussel has been found to have a very concentrated source of Omega 3, an important nutrient for joint health, it helps ease inflammation and is also full of Chondroitin which helps maintain cartilage integrity. Glucosamine is another common ingredient to look for in joint supplements; always check that it is a good quality source. Glucosamine contains the building blocks needed for joint cartilage integrity and helps to maintain synovial fluid too. Hyaluronic Acid or HA as it is often referred to as is a major component of synovial fluid within the joint; synovial fluid helps to cushion the joints and keep them pain free. Devil’s claw is a herb believed to have antiinflammatory properties. Many owners report that it helps to improve general stiffness and give the dog some comfort. Devil’s claw must not be fed to pregnant bitches. It comes in liquid or powder form and is easy to administer in food. Boswellia has been used for thousands of years and is enjoying a re-emergence. Like devil’s claw it contains anti-inflammatory properties and is also very mild on the stomach, making it ideal for dogs with sensitive digestion, it comes in powder or tablet form and is often a key ingredient in natural plant-based joint supplements. Turmeric is another popular herb with health benefits for dogs, including joint health. It can be bought in powder form but is messy and needs mixing with black pepper and oil for its full benefit, so it’s best bought in capsule form. Jeannette Douglas, SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.com

Billingshurst Rotary Club – busy, busy!

B

illingshurst & District Rotary Club has been quite busy recently. Back in September we helped park around 600 cars in Barns Green at the start of the Half Marathon, and as they all arrived in the space of one hour it was quite manic for a while. By the time you read this we will have supervised the arrival of Father Christmas at Newbridge Nurseries, and will be in attendance every weekend in December, in Santas Grotto. We will also have hosted the first round of the Rotary Young Chef competition at The Weald School. On 18th December we will be providing transport for some of the less mobile Senior Citizens to and from a Tea Party organised by The Weald School. The Rotary Club is one of 79 in the South East of England which all hold weekly get togethers, in our case at The Blacksmith’s Arms, Adversane, 7 for 7.30pm on Mondays, which is now an Italian Restaurant. Generally we have a speaker; recently we had a visit from our new Village Wardens, Glyn Thomas and Barry Faust who gave us a run through of what they get up to, and on another occasion Hilary Vaugan, a volunteer at Pulborough Wetlands told us about the work of the RSPB.

Billingshurst Rotary Club and the Wilding project

A

talk by Isabella Tree to the Billingshurst Rotary Club on the return to nature of the 3500-acre Knepp Estate in West Sussex, and the surprising results to date will take lace at The Blacksmith’s Arms, Adversane, RH14 9JH on 11th February, 2019 at 7pm. The Wilding project is pioneering stuff, which is being followed closely by ecologists and nature lovers from far and wide, and it’s happening on our doorstep! The talk is free, but space is limited so you need to register to be sure of a seat. To reserve a seat please register by email billingshurstrotary@gmail.com and indicate if you wish to stay for the buffet supper which will follow, at £10 a head. Background to the project In 1988 Charlie Burrell inherited Knepp Castle and its 3500-acre estate, and the title, from his Grandfather, Sir Walter Burrell. By 2000, having tried various farming approaches, including ice cream production from their three herds of dairy cattle, it became clear that conventional farming methods, in small fields on the heavy Wealden clay, couldn’t compete with larger farms on better soil elsewhere, so he decided to hand the farm over to Nature and see if ‘she’ could do a better job. So started the Knepp Wilding project, and the results have been spectacular, and unexpected. For a start all the insects came back, by the million, followed by the birds, which took advantage of the wider

hedgerows and scrubland for cover, and today Knepp has the largest population of turtle doves in the country and is home to many nesting pairs of nightingales during the migration season. The natural grazers that would have roamed the wooded countryside in prehistoric times such as aurochs, tarpan and boar have been replaced by Old English longhorn cattle, Exmoor ponies, and Tamworth pigs. The natural roe deer population has been reinforced with red deer, and fallow deer from the Petworth Estate, and the introduction of all these grazers has resulted in a dynamic mosaic of habitats. This experiment has been running for eighteen years now and the results continue to surprise and amaze. The cattle, pigs and deer are regularly culled so Knepp Estate provides a source of pasture-fed beef, pork and venison locally, and a burgeoning eco-tourism business – comprising camping, glamping and guided safaris – have a special appeal to nature lovers. As a result of all these changes the farmland is now operating at a profit. Charlie’s wife Isabella has recently written a book on this fascinating and ongoing project called simply, Wilding, under her maiden name of Isabella Tree. Remembrance / About the house

Remembrance Sunday – 100 years Billingshurst pays its respects, 11th November 2018

W

e gathered at Billingshurst War Memorial on Sunday 11th November to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War. The weather was kind to us for our Parade and this year, due to someone being taken ill in the church, we remained at the War Memorial after the laying of wreaths for our morning service. The support from our Parish Council and the different organisations this year has been phenomenal. In the course of the Poppy Appeal campaign we have been reminded of some of the tragic events and personal losses by families. Our schools have pursued all manner of acts of remembrance and reconciliation. No one could have

predicted the casualties of World War One. No one even envisaged trench warfare in August of 1914. The Somme and Verdun witnessed appalling slaughter. We believed in 1918 it would be the war to end all wars. We know that is not true, but we can only hope. On behalf of the Royal British Legion we thank our community for your continued support in what has been a memorial commemoration. Colin Banks, Branch President

The Weald School Remembrance

he Weald School has marked the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One with a series of events including a special assembly, a garden of remembrance and a silhouette unavailing. The Community Captains erected a special garden of remembrance with one hundred poppies in memory of the 165 fallen from the Billingshurst and Pulborough area and a list of the names of these soldiers. Bea Mulder, one of the Community Captains said, “What is sad is that many of the names of the fallen are close to our ages, the youngest was aged just 17 years old. We learnt in History lessons that many of the young people lied to get into the army to fight with their friends from their villages.” On Friday 9th November, students from each house marched to Billingshurst train station to unveil a silhouette of a lone soldier and memorial. To mark the occasion and to support the ceremony the English department in conjunction with the History department ran a writing competition and Katie Badger (Year 9) and Toby Nicholls (Year 8), the two winners, read their pieces to the local people in

attendance. Henry Austin played ‘The Last Post’ and prayers were also led by students. Callum Heath, a school community captain, said, “Billingshurst train station is significant to the village and community and it was only fitting that a memorial was unveiled by The Weald School students, as many of the fallen would have left this station 100 years ago to never return. Callum said that “The Weald School would like to thank the train station manager, the local community and the Royal British Legion in helping us make this happen.” The whole school observed a minute’s silence to mark the centenary. Mr Fry said, “It was amazing to see the whole school community come to a stop at 11 o’clock as the bugler played and a minute’s silence was held. It was emotional and fitting given the sacrifices made.” Alison Brown Central Administration Team Photo: silhouette unveiling at Billingshurst railway station

Plants for Christmas

W

ith Christmas just around the corner I’m often asked what houseplants plants I recommend as gifts. I present to you my top five… Hippeastrum / Amaryllis is a remarkable bulb which produces 60cm / 2ft tall, fleshy drainpipe stems and flamboyant trumpet flowers up to 20cm / 8in across. ‘Red Lion’ with deep scarlet flowers; ‘Apple Blossom’ with pink-tinged white flowers, and ‘Christmas Gift’ with plain white flowers, are readily available. You can buy them as DIY plant-ityourself kits, or as ready-planted gifts. Citrus bushes make interesting presents. Sold at this time of year with both flowers and developing fruit, they are deliciously scented. Lemon varieties ‘Meyer’ and ‘Four Seasons’ are lovely but also consider calamondin oranges. The plant should be kept in a light, frost-free spot over the winter with a minimum night temperature of 5°C, then in the summer the pot can be moved outside. Cyclamen persicum is wonderfully decorative. The flowers range from white, through pink, to red. This is probably a gift for a more experienced gardener as persuading it to flower again can be a challenge, but it can be done. Keep it in full light in winter, at a steady 13-16°C. Give it a liquid feed fortnightly while it is in flower. Water less as the stems start to bend and collapse, then keep it completely dry for three months during its dormant period. Gently introduce water again as new leaves appear. Schlumbergera x buckleyi, the Christmas cactus, is a perennial favourite. It has protruding stamens at the end of succulent, flattened leaves, and pretty

flowers. It likes high humidity while flowering so mist it regularly it with a fine spray of clean water, and feed it monthly with a high-potash feed. When it’s finished flowering put the plant in a light spot and keep the compost just moist. Hyacinthus orientalis ‘Ostara’ is a stunning hyacinth with deepblue flowers, powerfully scented and particularly nice when planted as a trio in a bowl or basket. Christmas hyacinths are ‘forced’ to flower earlier than they would naturally. They need a cool spot, preferably no more than 13°C, so that they do not flop. No-one wants a floppy hyacinth! The bulbs can be planted in the garden afterwards so will continue to provide pleasure in future years. Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ is not a houseplant but it makes a fabulous gift. It flowers from November, while the leaves are still on, through the winter. The pink flowers are scented and a few sprigs in a small vase at this time of year are just joyous. Even better, it is totally hardy so is great for the non-green-fingered, and can be planted out of a pot at any time, if the ground isn’t frozen. Don’t wrap plants, just tie a big bow around the pot. It’s a thoughtful touch to provide printed or hand-written instructions for aftercare. Make sure any living plant is well watered before you hand it over. They will probably be a bit neglected over the festive period, but a good watering should make sure that they last past New Year. Happy festive gardening. Rachel Leverton

Horsham District Council visit Shipley Community Project

D

id you know that £8,750 of ‘Section 106’ Development Fund money was awarded by Horsham District Council towards improving the drainage facilities at TD Shipley Football Club’s site in Shipley? As a result, a brand new junior football pitch has been built at one end of the site (previously rough and overgrown wasteland), and general watermanagement / land drainage solutions have been implemented through the rest of the site. This was organised by the Horsham & Shipley Community Project which has set up various activities at the site, reaching many more people through the week. The new CEO of Horsham District Council, Glen Chipp recently came to see. He was met by Mark Curtis of TD Shipley FC, the Trustees of HSCP, and many of the local people now taking advantage of the activities available. “We are so proud of what we have achieved here”, said Philip Gibbs who pioneered the HSCP. “The money has allowed us to improve the quality of the pitches, and thereby promote football for all ages and

abilities in the community. We have also been able to add some great facilities which are mainly of interest to older people who have more time on their hands, but want to remain active to some degree”. A ‘Men’s Shed’ (see Our Community Volunteers, Keith Witt, Village Tweet, May 2018) is there for local people to help with general maintenance of the grounds, practise woodworking skills or just spend time in each other’s company; the new Shipley Pétanque Club meets at the four pétanque pistes in the corner of the site, and there is now a thriving Walking Football division which meets weekly to play on the purpose-built grass pitch. Mr Chipp and his colleagues were really impressed. “It is great to see all this activity going on here. When possible, I am absolutely keen for the Council to support these types of initiatives because the benefits to the community are obvious”. For more information about the activities, please visit www.HorshamShipleyCommunityProject.com. Year of Culture 2019 calendar on sale now

A

full colour photographic calendar featuring 12 ‘hidden gems’ from across the Horsham District has been developed to celebrate the forthcoming Horsham District Year of Culture in 2019 and is on sale at local outlets now. Organisers of the Year of Culture celebrations Horsham District Council have always been keen to get as many people as possible involved in the year-long celebrations, so at the outset of the preparations they asked members of the public to vote on their favourite ‘hidden gems’ of the district, resulting in 12 places that will be celebrated during 2019 and featured in the calendar. The 12 hidden gems are – the Blue Idol Quaker Meeting House in Coolham, Coldwaltham Yew tree, Cobblestone Walk in Steyning, Chesworth Farm, Kithurst Hill, Knepp Castle, Motte and Bailey in North Horsham, Warnham Local Nature Reserve, Woods Mill in Henfield, Pulborough Brooks, South Downs Link and Sumners Pond in Barns Green. Each gem is depicted in full colour photography throughout the calendar. Money off coupons are also available at the back of the calendar offering over £20 of discounts off products and services from tea rooms, cafés and beer stockists across the district.

48

The calendar is on sale now at just £4.99 and every calendar purchased raises £1 for local vulnerable people of Horsham District. Outlets within or near Village Tweet’s area include Fowlers Estate Agent (74 High Street, Billingshurst), Sumners Ponds (Chapel Road, Barns Green), Hepworths Brewery (Stane Street, Pulborough, RH20 1DJ) and CC’S Emporium (10 Jengers Mead, Billingshurst). Commenting on the calendar, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure Cllr Jonathan Chowen said, “Creating a 2019 Calendar of Hidden Gems is a great way to kick start our Year of Culture celebrations and it was good to get so many members of our local community involved in voting for their favourite hidden gems in the Horsham District. “The calendar also highlights many of the amazing events and activities which will be going on throughout the year of celebration. “I would urge as many of you as possible to buy a copy, discover the district’s hidden gems and help to raise money for local vulnerable people.” Heather Pepper, Horsham District Council

Our Community Volunteers – Sylvia Green

W

hen Age UK’s Head Gardener in Horsham, Sylvia Green, first started working at their day centre at Lavinia House, there was no garden there, just a patch of bare, muddy earth. Sylvia had been working as a kitchen volunteer for Age UK for the previous seven years at the David Bryce Club, and expressed an interest in working outside. With the help of a couple of the drivers, she planned and planted a garden that visitors to the centre could enjoy. Gardening is in the blood as both her father and her uncle were gardeners – undertaking both paid and unpaid work – and although she can’t remember being taught about gardening by them, she obviously picked up a lot from them. The tradition continues into the next generation too, as her three children are all keen gardeners themselves and her sons have used their horticultural skills for their work. This year Age UK celebrates its 60th anniversary and so Sylvia has designed and implemented a white theme in the garden. However, she has decided to stop working at Lavinia House at the end of the year: “Well, I have

reached 80!” she says, but this is clearly not a retirement. Sylvia has become involved with another garden project at her church, St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Horsham. The church garden is for the enjoyment of the community, but it is also used to grow vegetables and flowers which the visitors to their regular coffee mornings can have in exchange for a donation. She is also keen to spend more time working on her own garden which is currently undergoing a transformation, with a little help from her sons. What does she get out of volunteering as a gardener? “Job satisfaction,” she replies without hesitation. Will she miss Lavinia House? She tells me that she will still keep in touch and come back to see her friends and fellow volunteers (one of whom was still volunteering in the garden well into his nineties, so this is clearly a job that keeps you young). “I’ll miss it, but life moves on. Something else will come in its place.” Pippa Cleeve If you know someone who you feel deserves recognition in Our Community Volunteers please email Pippa: pppclv@spektrum.demon.co.uk
