H

ilton boys through the years have been very conscious about giving to those in need and noteworthy causes. Guy Waterhouse (Grade 9) recently won a competition and he generously gave his winnings of R2 500 worth of stationery to two Vula Projects, namely Gateway School and PROTEC. The competition was run by

the Rhinose Foundation, which was founded by Andrew Paterson who was so incensed by the horrific rhino slaughtering and pain of numerous calves left motherless, that he hit on the idea of Rhinoses, a bright red, recyclable plastic rhino ‘horn’ seen displayed on the front of many motor cars. Guy entered the competition in which he had to write a chil-

dren’s book on a young rhino affected by poaching and his progression through the years. “I was lucky enough to win the 14+ category with my book “The Long Flight to Freedom,” he said, winning an I-Pad and a CNA gift card worth R2 500 for stationery to donate to a school/s of his choice.

Gardener’s Corner I

DO hope you are all enjoying the lovely rains - but not the hail! If you were hit by the hail your garden will take about a week to recover so don’t despair, the nitrogen will do your garden good. After the rain the weeds will take off so pull them out while they are young and the ground is soft, remember one year’s seeding seven years weeding! Your annuals and perennials should all be looking good especially if you keep dead heading them. Irises are over now, if you have too many dig them up cut off the leaves to about 3 inches, remove shrivelled rhizome and replant in manure or compost. Do not bury rhizome, cover with a little compost and water. They

look lovely grouped together. Hydrangea roots should be kept cool and moist at all times, feed and mulch with pine needles. To keep them blue add 90g aluminium sulphate to 5 litres water. To keep them pink add a little lime to the soil. Don’t forget to tend your roses. Don’t cut your lawn too short, the sun will scorch the roots. Veggies: beans (bush and climbing) beetroot, brinjals, broccoli, cabbages, carrots, cucumbers, potatoes, sweet potatoes, gem squash and tomatoes. Pick your lemons when they are half ripe and you will get the maximum amount of juice. Happy Gardening - Judy Duggan.
