For most banks, success is about how many accounts you can open, how quickly you can move customers through the teller line, or how many loans you can close. We’re different than most. And, we have different measures of success. Did we do all we could to make every customer interaction a pleasant one? Are we making this community

better? Are we making a difference to this area? These are lofty goals, but they are ones we’re always striving for because, as a true community bank, we know these are our responsibilities. You’ll get great financial tools when you bank with us, but we don’t stop there. We’re more than just a bank. THAT’S PART OF OUR STORY.

WHEELING VILLAGE PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

O

On behalf of the Village Board, I would like to express our heartfelt appreciation for your support of the Wheeling/Prospect Heights Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The Chamber exists to promote opportunities for its members, encourage local business growth, lobby regulators and governing bodies on behalf of business interests, and provide a forum for developing meaningful relationships. Your support of this organization enhances the vitality of our local economy and benefits our residents with a strong job market, exciting shopping and dining options, and future growth. Positioned in the heart of the northwest suburbs of Chicago, with a diverse population of 40,000 people, Wheeling is perhaps best known for our Restaurant Row and flourishing business community. Home to over 800 licensed businesses from more than 50 business sectors and with approximately 13.5 million square feet of industrial space, Wheeling is the center of commerce and industry in the northwest suburbs. Our economic climate is enhanced by every new business that opens its doors in town, and we are grateful to those who have chosen to locate here. The Village works hard to support continued growth and development. Last year we negotiated with the other taxing districts to create two new Tax Increment Financing (TIF) districts: the Town Center-II TIF, which will help kick off the transformation of the Dundee Road corridor and surrounding area, and the Southeast-II TIF, which will encourage industrial, retail, restaurant, and hotel development around the airport. Another important initiative currently underway is the Chicago Executive Airport Master Plan, a study to maximize the value of this key resource; the plan will consider noise abatement and layout improvements, among other issues. Another major emphasis involves working with state and local partners to achieve service objectives. The Village is now taking a significant leadership role with several regional agencies, such as the Northwest Municipal Conference (NWMC) Transportation Committee, the NWMC Legislative Committee, and the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission. We recently entered into an agreement to provide police dispatch services for the City of Des Plaines, an initiative that will save both communities money while maintaining the same reliable service. In another collaborative effort, the Village worked with State Representatives Elaine Nekritz and Carol Sente to help SOLEX College achieve certification for its manufacturing apprentice program, a program that will include partnerships with Precision Zone and the ICARTEAM multi-industry network, both Wheeling-based businesses. This program is part of the Village’s ongoing workforce development initiative, which is aided

WPH – Chamber of Commerce & Industry

IL-WHE-CW-14 Design NEW.indd 6

by connections between government, industry, and educators. To promote our vibrant restaurant and hospitality sector, the Village has joined the Chicago’s North Shore Convention & Visitors’ Bureau, which will help bring more conventions, trade shows, and corporate meetings to Wheeling, increasing hotel occupancy and restaurant and retail sales. We also look forward to continuing our productive collaboration with the Chamber’s energetic new leadership, which will include events like the annual golf outing, the Industrial Manufacturing Seminars, and the Taste of the Town, all of which help promote Wheeling businesses. We have an exciting and productive year ahead, with several major projects that will have a tremendous impact on the future of this community. These include the Senior Center’s move into improved and expanded facilities at the Park District; the start of construction at Wheeling Town Center; ongoing capital improvements; new construction at Prairie Park; completion of the new Northgate Crossings apartment complex; pursuit of a Sister City relationship with Gangnam, South Korea; Independence Day festivities at the airport; and another successful Taste of the Town event. The Village’s Department of Economic Development helps existing businesses manage their future growth and space needs, and also recruits new businesses and industries. The Village continues to promote growth and development in Wheeling in accordance with our Comprehensive Plan. While Wheeling is an established suburb of Chicago, a considerable amount of property remains available for infill commercial and industrial development and redevelopment, including two Village-owned lots on Milwaukee Avenue. For information on location or development opportunities, please contact the Department of Economic Development at (847) 459-2605 or ed@wheelingil.gov. We look forward to watching your business thrive over many successful years in Wheeling. With you in our community, the Village’s business climate will only grow stronger. Sincerely,

Dean S. Argiris Village President

PROSPECT HEIGHTS MAYOR’S WELCOME

O

On behalf of our residents, our food, entertainment and business partners, along with the various organizations that serve our city, we welcome you to the thriving metropolis of Prospect Heights, Illinois. Come visit and meet us. We are located in the near northwest area of greater Chicagoland. We are co-owners of the Chicago Executive Airport with Wheeling, offering charterer transportation to all major points on the entire globe. As a long-time licensed pilot I can attest to the safety and operational efficiency of our airport. While we have a small city we offer much more than other larger municipalities nearby. We have a great surrounding area where you can live comfortably in our many condominium or rental housing units and even in beautiful homes large and small on one-half acre or larger lots. There are parks, trails and fishing ponds within our borders and even two golf courses to serve your hole-in-one desires. We are served by a fire district headquartered here. The library and recreation park with a swimming pool and summer camps for the kids are within walking distance for most of our residents. The center of town boasts a small

shopping area complete with a Walgreens, a grocery and meat market and so many other amenities like our City Hall and friendly police department. We have a robust vision to future growth and new services. Our two school districts are second to none in our area. Come live, work and play in Prospect Heights. Highway and expressway travel along with our Metra station and easy access to all areas are within your reach. You won’t be disappointed!

I

I am a 22-year Wheeling resident and have served on the Village’s Plan Commission for the past 15 years. I retired from Lincolnwood School District in 2011 and currently serve on the board of the Partnership Finance Credit Union. When I was asked to join the Chamber of Commerce team, I recognized an opportunity to put my knowledge of economic development, my experience with nonprofit groups, and my familiarity with the

community’s relationship networks to work on behalf of local businesses. I support the Chamber in its mission to help its members grow and prosper by developing relevant educational and informative programs and by encouraging meaningful connections between community partners.

DID YOU KNOW? The Korean Cultural Center of Chicago is home to the “Busan Jung” pavilion, the only traditional Korean pavilion in the Midwest, which was a gift of friendship from the City of Busan, Korea. The pavilion was shipped to Wheeling in parts and Busan craftsmen were flown in to assemble and paint it. Each paint color was assigned a dedicated artist and each color has a symbolic meaning.

CHAMBER PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

D

Dear Wheeling and Prospect Heights Area Businesses and Residents, Welcome to our 2nd Annual Community Guide and Business Directory. As President of the Chamber, I am very proud of our Chamber and its Members, what we accomplished over the past couple of years, and the work undertaken thus far in 2015. I am grateful to have the opportunity to meet and work with many business owners in our communities that are supportive of our efforts and events. I am very lucky to have like-minded and energetic directors and associate directors who devote so much of their time and expertise to guide our Chamber forward and participate on improving programming and adding value for our members. And last, but certainly not least, I am thankful for our Executive Director, Jim Krappel and Membership Manager, Pam Dorband who have tenaciously worked through a challenging transition at the Chamber office and have brought vitality and a new perspective to our efforts. Today, the Chamber is well poised for growth and continued prosperity: our membership base has stabilized and is growing with 33 new members added in 2014 and another 15 so far in 2015. From a programming perspective, our offerings are robust. Our Golf Committee has worked hard on the July 2015 outing that is expected to sell out again this year. This is an event that many of us look forward to each summer and is a great way for our members to gather and enjoy a great round of golf. Our Taste of Town event was a huge success in 2014, attracting new sponsorship and public to our communities with more than 800 attendees. This year, the Committee is targeting a goal of 1,000 plus attendees and it will again be hosted at the Westin in Wheeling that has proven to be a superb venue for this event. The Industrial Manufacturing Committee has organized eight events since it was established and two more are slated for the second half of this year. The focus of these events is on fostering education and providing resources to our manufacturers, as well as a platform to promote their business. Our Marketing and Membership Committee modified our dues structure in late 2014, has refreshed our new member packets, and is at the heart of membership events aimed at increasing marketing opportunities for our members. Programming in 2015 has been revamped to include re-establishing a Business Advantage Networking group for all our members

and a new group for women professionals, Networks for Enterprising Women (NEW), which successfully completed its first event in spring and has another planned for fall. Our Restaurant Row Committee has experienced leaders that understand the challenges and needs of our restaurants and the committee is focused on adding value to every event that our restaurants participate in, as well as attracting new customers from beyond our borders. And our Scholarship Committee, new in 2015, has a goal of awarding a number of scholarships for members and their families in 2016. In 2015, the Chamber office upgraded its IT and is completing a refresh of our website with the goal of transforming it into an effective marketing tool for our members. Last, our Board has begun to review our Strategic Plan and convert it into a working, living document that will guide our efforts for the next five to 10 years. The Chamber is also working toward growing its strategic alliances with the Korean Cultural Center of Chicago (KCCOC), Chicago North Shore Convention & Visitor’s Bureau (CNSCVB), the Daily Herald, Chicago Executive Airport, and Dollars for Scholars. Certainly, the Chamber could not accomplish all of this work without the support and alliance of the Village of Wheeling and the City of Prospect Heights. We are very grateful to their leaders for their partnership and friendship over the years. Many thanks to all that have worked hard on this year’s Guide and thank you to the businesses and individuals that have subscribed to this year’s edition. We appreciate your support. We are committed to adding value to your membership and we hope that you will find this year’s Guide informative and useful.

WESTIN CHICAGO NORTH SHORE HOTEL

T

The anchor of Wheeling’s eastern skyline is the 412-room Westin Chicago North Shore Hotel which opened in 2006 and was updated and renovated in 2014. The luxury property attracts scores of meetings and conventions each year, as well as weddings, political events, galas and other functions, as well as both business and leisure travelers. Overlooking the Des Plaines River, the hotel features over 35,000 square feet of meeting space, including the 15,000-square-foot Ravinia Grand Ballroom, a heated indoor swimming pool and whirlpool, fitness studio, 24-hour business center, Executive Club Lounge and Saranello’s casual Italian restaurant. It was also recognized with the AAA Four Diamond Award and in 2014 by BringFido.com for being incredibly hospitable to pets 40 pounds or less, earning the 2014 Fido’s Favorite Award. “Our location in Wheeling is very important to us for a number of reasons. First, there is its proximity to multiple corporate campuses which house hundreds of employees each and attract many business visitors each year,” Aaron Bastable, Director of Sales and Marketing for the Westin Chicago North Shore, explained. “We are also located conveniently to both the Tri-State Tollway and to multiple Metra lines. This way our guests can access not only the surrounding communities, but also the attractions in Chicago. And, finally, since we are located outside of the city of Chicago, we are able to offer our facilities and amenities at a price point that appeals to a wider range of convention planners, as well as to business and leisure travelers,” he said. “This hotel was built with help from tax increment financing (TIF) money from the Village of Wheeling. So, in essence, the community is an important stakeholder in the hotel,” Bastable explained “But I want to point out that the major renovation to the hotel which we completed in 2014 was 100 percent financed by the hotel’s new owners and management company. We were happy to reinvest in the hotel and in the Wheeling community by completely remodeling our premium suites and by refreshing our traditional rooms with 47-inch flat screen televisions, new refrigerators, carpeting and wall vinyl, and resurfaced furniture. We also added eight new power and USB ports to each guest room,” he said. The Executive Club Lounge within the hotel was also gutted and renovated and the exterior landscaping received a facelift. “This $6 million renovation took five months

to complete. It also involved installing all new electronic directional and event signage in the hotel,” he added. “We expect this investment to keep paying dividends to the Village of Wheeling in the form of occupancy taxes, property taxes, employment opportunities and contributions to local causes,” Bastable said. “We are a good community partner. The Westin is the largest property tax contributor in Wheeling today. In addition, it contributes to the community’s coffers through a six percent tax on each guest room rented and 200 people are employed with full benefits at the hotel. Many of those employees live nearby in Wheeling,” he explained. The hotel also takes pride in giving back to the community around it. The hotel donated school supplies like backpacks, crayons and notebooks to needy students in the local Wheeling Community Consolidated School District 21. They also encouraged hotel employees to contribute personally to the effort. In addition, Bastable and others from the hotel’s management team participate in Wheeling High School’s business incubator class. Bastable, for instance, presented marketing and value proposition lessons and he also continues to mentor two groups of students as they work through the launch of their new products and services businesses. The Westin also assists the Wheeling/Prospect Heights Chamber of Commerce with its annual Taste of the Town event. They donate both their Ravinia Grand Ballroom and their staff for the annual fund-raiser, Bastable said. In addition, the Westin has had a representative on the Chamber’s board of directors ever since the hotel opened its doors in 2006. Since last September, that representative has been Bastable. Green initiatives also abound at the Westin Chicago North Shore. In fact, the hotel has reduced its carbon footprint on the community through the implementation of many systems and programs, demonstrating their concern for the global community, as well as the local community. Those green efforts include high-efficiency lighting in guest rooms and public areas, occupancy sensors, water-conserving fixtures, recycling, elimination of styrofoam packaging, sustainable food and beverage options, and much more. “The latest step on the Westin’s journey to encourage business in Wheeling was our encouragement of the Village to join the 

Chicago North Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau (CNSCVB) earlier this year. The hotel could not join until the community joined and now the Restaurant Row Hospitality Group is also in talks with the bureau,” he said. The Westin management’s purpose, according to Bastable, was not only to create a relationship between the convention bureau and the Westin, but also between the convention bureau and Wheeling. They are certain that this membership will attract new conventions to the Westin, which will, in turn, bring increased occupancy tax revenue to Wheeling. “The Westin Chicago North Shore and Wheeling are now able to more strategically partner with the other members of the CNSCVB like Winnetka, Northbrook, Deerfield and others. The convention bureau will

now be able to market the Westin and the many restaurants in Wheeling to their customers. In addition, this will increase our exposure to the businesses in those other member towns,” Bastable continued. “It is just one more avenue of marketing and we are particularly anxious to become a part of the CNSCVB’s electronic communications marketing which are very well-developed and extensive,” he added. “Ultimately, we feel that this will be a great way to bring to Wheeling between 300 and 2,000 people per convention – people who don’t live here but will spend money here while they are in town,” Bastable said. “We do quite a bit of convention business already, but there is an opportunity to capture more.”

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

A

A community’s quality of life is largely determined by the health of its business community. Businesses not only provide jobs to area residents, but also pay the taxes that subsidize the roads, schools, parks, libraries, and other public resources that every community relies on. That is why the leaders of both the Village of Wheeling and the City of Prospect Heights make a concerted effort to attract and welcome new businesses, and to support the success of current businesses.

WHEELING Wheeling expects to break ground in late 2015 on its new downtown, Wheeling Town Center, located on the nearly ten-acre former Wickes Furniture property next to the Wheeling Metra station at Dundee Road and Northgate Parkway. Wheeling Town Center is a $100 million transit-oriented master-planned mixed-use development featuring 100,000 square feet of retail, restaurant, and service space, as well as a Village greenway and nearly 300 midrise apartments with an internal parking deck. The complex is directly adjacent to the 85-acre Heritage Park, the municipal campus and the train station. The Wheeling Town Center will be the downtown area that Wheeling has never had, now made possible by the 2004 arrival of commuter train service. “The development of a new downtown is a complex undertaking,” said John Melaniphy, Director of Economic Development for the Village of Wheeling. “We have established an effective TIF District in the area, signing an intergovernmental agreement with our fellow taxing bodies regarding surplus TIF revenues. We are also resolving underground utility obstructions which created some delays.” Melaniphy reports that restaurant interest in the site is already strong. “We already have one anchor tenant signed: Flix Brewhouse, a restaurant and first-run movie theater. We also have letters of intent from several fast-casual restaurants, including Starbucks Coffee, Subway, Noodles & Company, and Dunkin’ Donuts. There has even been interest from several signature restaurants that are interested in locating along the Village greenway with outdoor seating.” Thanks to the strong seasonal audience at neighboring Heritage Park, where families gather for events, festivals, and baseball and soccer games, the site will attract a wide variety of restaurants, retailers, and entertainment venues to the new center, Melaniphy said. “In addition, the Village is currently evaluating a plan to build a senior center in Heritage Park, and we have also conducted meetings with

WPH – Chamber of Commerce & Industry

IL-WHE-CW-14 Design NEW.indd 24

developers to redevelop the west side of the tracks. The Village’s Comprehensive Plan envisions a move away from industrial use along that stretch of the tracks toward more mixed use,” he explained. In all, a total of nearly 600 new luxury apartment units will soon be added in close proximity to the Metra station. The first round will come with the completion of Northgate Crossing, a new 288-unit, three-story apartment complex with garages currently under construction on the north side of Dundee Road, just north of Town Center. The Wheeling Town Center development will add another 300 units directly adjacent to the station. Melaniphy expects the Wheeling Town Center to have a positive effect on retail properties up and down the Dundee Road corridor. “We continue to contact developers about the former Kmart property at Dundee and Elmhurst Road,” he said. “Based on an examination of our retail sales by category, we are actively seeking a big-box home improvement or general merchandise store for that location.” In 2014 the Village of Wheeling issued building permits for $40.4 million worth of construction projects, a $4.2 million increase over 2013. It also invested $8.9 million in capital improvements to Wheeling’s infrastructure, including nearly $1 million in TIF-related improvements. New retail businesses that came to Wheeling during 2014 include Starbucks Coffee, Salata, Saranello’s Banquets, Spears Bourbon–Burgers–Beer, La Michoacana de Dora ice cream shop, and Title Max. Four new fitness facilities came to town (ChicagoFitLife, Smart Body, Crossfit Breakout and Zity on Elmhurst), as did three new salons and spas (Massa Spa, Nail Tech 6, and Young’s Tips 2 Toes). “We have accelerated our marketing efforts to recruit new restaurants to the former Le Francais restaurant site and the Village-owned parcel just north of Tuscany,” Melaniphy said. “In 2014 we partnered with ownership to demolish the former Don Roth’s restaurant on Milwaukee Avenue and made that parcel shovel-ready for redevelopment.” The Prairie Crossing shopping center in front of the Westin Hotel has also been the focus of economic development efforts, with several new tenants there. In addition, plans are underway for a new 9,000-squarefoot restaurant building north of the Dunkin’ Donuts drive-through. As of January 1, 2015, the Village of Wheeling is a member of Chicago’s North Shore Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (CNSCVB). According to Melaniphy, the Westin Chicago North Shore Hotel and Convention Center had encouraged the Village to affiliate with a convention bureau to enhance hotel occupancy and to accelerate convention, corporate meeting, and trade show bookings in Wheeling. The Village expects that membership will also enhance the marketing efforts of the Village’s 

The Village is currently working with a beverage and food vendor on a deal involving a 30,000-square-foot industrial building. The vendor intends to purchase and renovate the building to meet current and future needs. They will relocate the business and its 70 employees from another north suburban community. The project will be assisted with a property tax incentive, since the building has been vacant for more than a year, Melaniphy explained. “Wheeling has 13.5 million square feet of industrial space,” he said. “The Chicago region has the third-largest industrial market in the United States, with 1.2 billion square feet, so the Wheeling Economic Development staff allocates significant time and resources to industrial attraction and retention efforts.” The Village’s industrial vacancy rate is only six percent, compared to an average eight percent vacancy rate throughout the metropolitan area, Melaniphy said. “Manufacturers are attracted to Wheeling because of our proximity to I-294, rail lines, and both Chicago Executive and O’Hare International Airports,” Melaniphy said. “They appreciate our transportation infrastructure and the fact that we have a significant concentration of newer industrial buildings of various sizes in modern industrial parks. The properties most in demand generally feature modern loading docks and the high ceilings that today’s manufacturers require.” The fact that Wheeling offers varied housing stock nearby, with diverse price points and an easy commute via the Metra station is another factor, Melaniphy added. Wheeling continues to focus resources on recruiting foreign investment and foreign trade, advertising in industrial trade publications in order to attract companies from around the world. For instance, Wheeling is pursuing a Sister City relationship with Gangnam, South Korea, in the hope of encouraging tourism, cultural and educational exchanges, foreign trade opportunities, and direct and indirect foreign investment. The Village’s leaders have demonstrated their strong partnership with the Korean Cultural Center of Chicago and the greater Korean-American community, and have repeatedly expressed appreciation of the Center’s many contributions. “Our objective is to work closely with the Korean Cultural Center and

restaurants, entertainment venues, and recreational amenities since the CNSCVB’s full-time staff will be marketing their members’ facilities to meeting planners. The Village’s significant investment in CNSCVB membership should increase restaurant and retail sales throughout the Village, Melaniphy added. Wheeling is also actively seeking additional industrial and warehouse development to help bolster manufacturing opportunities and create jobs. For instance, Village staff recently worked with State Representatives Elaine Nekritz and Carol Sente to assist SOLEX College with state certification for their manufacturing apprentice program at Precision Zone and ICARTEAM. “Dru Garcia, the Village’s Business Development Coordinator, has directed our industrial business attraction and retention programs with great passion and drive,” Melaniphy said. “Our whole area has greatly benefitted from the presence of our industrial base, which diversifies our economic makeup, contributes a substantial portion of tax revenues, and provides valuable employment opportunities. Manufacturing is the only wealth-creating class of business. Every job a manufacturer creates results in an additional three to four support jobs. So this is an especially desirable business class for our community, and our nation overall, to support in achieving and sustaining true economic growth.” Based on business licensing activity, new industrial openings and expansions in 2014 totaled more than 644,000 square feet, with over 250 new jobs added in the industrial sector alone. This past year FedEx leased a vacant 150,000-square-foot building, situated on 10 acres along Peterson Road, that will supplement the firm’s large Prospect Heights facility and will bring more than 100 new jobs to Wheeling. The overall project represents a nearly $14 million investment. Precision Zone, an online vendor of industrial controls and equipment used in manufacturing and other industrial applications, also undertook a major renovation and moved into a vacant 72,000-square-foot facility on Chaddick Drive.

our community partners, including area manufacturers and businesses, to establish mutually beneficial exchanges with Gangnam,” Melaniphy said. “Wheeling has never had a Sister City before, and this presents an exciting opportunity for our community.”

ute to our reserve fund,” Helmer stated. “An addition to the city’s public works building is also underway, thanks, in part, to a $100,000 check from the State of Illinois, delivered by State Representative David Harris.” Prospect Heights also sold a two and a half-acre parcel near Wolf and Palatine roads for $1.5 million, which helped add to the City’s coffers. And flooding near the Des Plaines River, once the bane of Prospect Heights existence, has been basically eradicated, thanks to Levee 37’s completion. A new 50 million gallon water detention facility has been created in Wheeling and it is expected to ensure that flooding horror stories near the river in Prospect Heights are a thing of the past, Helmer stated. But Prospect Heights still needs to deal with weak or old infrastructure in other areas of the city which contributes to occasional flooding in those areas, he admitted. “During the coming year we hope to focus on our downtown intersections, the train station area and a 30-acre parcel at Allstate. We are also acquiring land and trying to attract developers to help us advance our comprehensive plan,” he told those gathered at the State of the City luncheon. “The construction of 102 units of assisted living and nursing care has been approved, as has the construction of 700 self-storage units along Rand Road. Construction on both will begin in late spring or early summer,” Helmer continued. “We will also market 10 acres across from the Chicago Executive Airport which we own jointly with Wheeling. We are determined to make something happen there. Simultaneously, we are partnering with Wheeling to investigate what it will take for a major update to the Airport’s layout plan which dates to the early 1980s.” “In addition, a major beautification plan will begin to be implemented along Milwaukee Avenue in May. The Prospect Heights Natural Resources Commission, chaired by Dr. Agnes Wojarski and Kari Spiegelhalter, has been formed to improve the slough areas and the wildlife habitat there. “We also hope to find businesses to go into the remaining empty storefronts and plan to hire both a part-time economic development director and a part-time public relations director for the City,” he continued.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS Big changes have taken place in Prospect Heights over the past four years and more are on the horizon. “When we took over, the budget was in shambles and now we have a balanced budget with unallocated reserve funds,” Mayor Nick Helmer told his audience at the recent State of the City address, sponsored by the Wheeling-Prospect Heights Chamber of Commerce. “There were pot holes on every street and now there are none,” he continued. “Our police department headquarters, with only 14 officers on duty, was closed 24/7. Now we have 27 officers under contract and the offices are open 24/7. Pension funds were 40 percent funded and now that stands at over 60 percent. City Hall was a part-time operation and now we are full-time.” The difference, according to Helmer, is that city staff and elected officials are now working together for the good of Prospect Heights residents. Economic development is the secret to the city’s newfound success, Helmer said. “There were vacant store fronts everywhere. We filled 22 of them, headed by Ultra Foods last January and the HOME Bar and many other smaller businesses like Dance and All that Jazz, Clear Candle, The Village Bike, two new banks and two restaurants. All of those formerly empty storefronts are no longer dark.” “Video gaming came to the City and a 2,000-square-foot addition was made to Player’s Pub, our off-track-betting facility,” he continued. In addition, several builders recently announced that they would be building a total of 13 new homes in the city as the national recession finally wanes. “All of these new investments have allowed us to go from a deficit to a balanced budget with some surplus. We have been able to pave 32 miles of streets; upgrade our signs with vibrant colors; and even contrib-

BUSINESS LEADERS

S

Saying that the Wheeling/Prospect Heights business community is diverse is putting it mildly. The two municipalities are home to not only an international airport catering to corporate and general aviation, but also to one of the Chicago area’s best-known groupings of restaurants and to a large number of small- and medium-sized manufacturers, local service businesses and retailers. In many cases, these businesses’ executives are also leaders within the Wheeling/Prospect Heights Chamber of Commerce, lending their expertise and business acumen to the effort to advance the local business environment for all members.

KEATS MANUFACTURING Keats Manufacturing in Wheeling, a metal stamping and tool and die maker, achieved quite a bit of notoriety earlier this year when they were mentioned during Governor Bruce Rauner’s inauguration address. He had twice stopped at their facility during the campaign, meeting with the principals of Keats and other area businesses in order to hear their concerns and get their ideas about the state of manufacturing in Illinois. Rauner made a good choice. Keats Manufacturing was founded in Chicago in 1958 by a pair of brothers; moved to Wheeling in 1989; and today it is being run jointly by the second and third generations of the family. It employs 110 people in Wheeling and another 50 at Keats Southwest, Inc. in El Paso, Texas, making electrical parts for the automotive, defense, medical and appliance industries. And they know quite a bit about manufacturing and its problems because Matt Eggemeyer, Chief Operating Officer of Keats, not only runs his family business, but he has the pulse of other area manufacturers, thanks to his position as vice president of the Wheeling-Prospect Heights Chamber of Commerce and his involvement in its Industrial Manufacturing Committee. “There was a time when we

were just an address in Wheeling. We were pretty anonymous. But since we joined the Chamber about three years ago, we feel more connected to the Village and to other area manufacturers. Through the Industrial Manufacturing subgroup we are able to exchange ideas with others about running an efficient shop and even about the best lighting and software,” Eggemeyer explained. “We also feel as if we have more of a voice in what is going on locally, thanks to our Chamber connections,” he added. And having the attention of the new governor isn’t bad, either, he admitted. He hopes that Rauner is able to make some changes that will improve the climate for manufacturers throughout the state. Eggemeyer is also involved with the Manufacturers Career Internship Program (MCIP) through which he is working to recruit high school students into manufacturing and tool and die work, give them paid internships and see if they can work out as new employees.

TDS METROCOM The longest serving member of the Wheeling/Prospect Heights Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is Alfred Scaletta, Strategic Accounts Executive with TDS Metrocom, a phone and Internet service provider to businesses in the Northwest suburbs. In fact, TDS owns U.S. Cellular, among other companies. Scaletta joined the Chamber soon after arriving at TDS 12 years ago because even though his new office was in Vernon Hills, the many businesses in Wheeling and Prospect Heights were part of his service area and he knew that joining the local Chamber of Commerce would be a great way to get to know those potential customers. “I have met a lot of people through the 

Chamber and developed some wonderful business relationships,” Scaletta said. “In fact, among my local customers are the Chicago Executive Airport, Reynolds and Engis.” Scaletta has served as Chamber president twice over the years and is or has been a member of the golf outing committee, Taste of the Town committee and the Industrial Manufacturing committee. As a result of his involvement, TDS is the Chamber’s postage sponsor and it annually sponsors a hole at the golf outing. They also give out mini Dove bars in the sponsor tent. Personal relationships developed at Chamber socials and while working on Chamber committees have given Scaletta and his 12 inside and outside salespeople an introduction to local businesses in TDS’s competition against other Internet and phone providers. Because they know Scaletta, business owners are willing to talk to him or his salespeople about what sets TDS apart from the competition, specifically, the fact that they have a local presence so their technicians arrive quickly and their customer service people actually answer the phone when someone has a question or problem, Scaletta said. activity for the community.” D’Angelo said. “We became like a family.” He also admits that he wanted to be a part of the business decisions made in town in order to improve business for all local restaurants, since restaurants thrive off each other’s energy. Consequently, he was asked to become chairman of the Chamber’s Restaurant Row Hospitality Group, a group which recently lobbied the Village of Wheeling to become a member of the Chicago’s North Shore Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (CNSCVB). The CNSCVB would promote the world-class brands in town to its tourism and convention audience, bringing additional business to Restaurant Row and the hotels in the area. “The purpose of the Restaurant Row Hospitality Group is to bring the corporate restaurants and the mom and pop restaurants together to share ideas about how they can run their restaurants more successfully. We give the hospitality sector, whether they are big or small, equal respect and try to bring useful insights to group members, such as presentations by representatives of the health department or about online marketing and communication platforms, for example,” he explained. “We all benefit from having a busy, active Restaurant Row because the more successful restaurants we have, the more people we attract to the area who, in turn, tell their friends about the area,” D’Angelo continued. “The Chamber acts as a conduit for area restaurants and hotels to work together to build awareness of Restaurant Row as a regional destination for dining and events.” Tuscany is located at 550 S. Milwaukee Avenue, Wheeling. For more information, call (847) 465-9988 or visit www.tuscanychicago.com.

TUSCANY ITALIAN RESTAURANT Frank D’Angelo became general manager of the Tuscany Italian restaurant in Wheeling in early 2014 and within two months, he became a member of the Board of Directors of the Wheeling/Prospect Heights Chamber of Commerce. Tuscany is part of the Chicago-based Stefani Restaurant Group which owns 437 Rush in River North, Tavern on Rush, Castaways on North Ave Beach, three Tuscany restaurants and several venues on Navy Pier including Riva Crab House, The Crystal Gardens and the Landshark Beer Garden. Tuscany has been a part of Wheeling’s famous Restaurant Row since 1999, serving classic Northern Italian cuisine in a restaurant which seats 330 plus 45 more seats on the outdoor patio come summer. Tuscany employs 45 full and part-time workers, including Executive Chef Bolla Loza who trained in the Tuscany region of Italy. “Tuscany has been a loyal Chamber member since the restaurant opened. So, when I arrived, I saw the opportunity for us to take our place as a leader and standard-bearer for Restaurant Row. I became very actively involved in order to build relationships with local business and community leaders, to help them develop relevant programming for our restaurant and hospitality sector, as well as enhance awareness of what we offer as a restaurant. The nice thing is Tuscany also ended up serving as a center of

EVENTS – WHEELING’S TASTE OF THE TOWN

Wheeling’s 2014 Taste of the Town was a huge success. Bringing together over 20 local restaurants at the Westin Chicago North Shore, the community kicked off the season in style! The “Healthy Harvest” celebration on Oct. 9 attracted nearly 900 attendees who enjoyed tastings, select wine and craft beers from over 20 local restaurants and sponsors along with live entertainment, silent auction and great raffle prizes. A portion of proceeds will also benefit three local charities: Alexander Graham Bell Montessori School, Cancer Wellness Center, and the Korean Cultural Center of Chicago. The event nearly doubled the total revenue raised in 2013 and boasted nearly 1.5 times greater attendance. “A major portion of the funding for the Chamber’s local business retention

and service programming relies on funds raised from Taste of the Town, thus supporting continued vitality of our renowned Restaurant Row,” says Frank D’Angelo, General Manager Tuscany-Wheeling and 2014 Taste of the Town Event Chair. “The restaurants and hotels along the
