The city of Mequon has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century when settlers began to trap and trade with the Potawatami and Menomonie tribes living along the Milwaukee River. By the 1830s, many of the explorers were beginning to build and settle, and by 1836 the area was designated as the town of Mequon. Not long after, Thiensville saw its beginning when John Henry Thien, a German immigrant, travelled along the Milwaukee River looking for a new place to call home. He and his wife settled near the Native American village Mequon Sippi in 1842 and began building a dam and grist mill along the banks of the river. As more and more immigrants found their way to the area, the community began to thrive. These adventurous immigrants, mostly English, German, Irish and Yankee, learned and worked with Native Americans as they built their new community.

Mequon became an official township in 1846, and town meetings were held at Thien’s home. Though Thiensville was, and still is, entirely surrounded by the town of Mequon, it remained unincorporated until 1910 when it officially became the village of Thiensville with a population of 289. Both Mequon and Thiensville flourished throughout the early 20th century, and in 1957, the town of Mequon became the city of Mequon. The area has grown greatly since its beginning, but still remembers and honors the culture and history that made it what it is today. The story of early settlers can be learned through our community’s vast array of historical sites and organizations. The Thiensville Historic Preservation Commission developed a colorful walking tour booklet in order to teach about the Green Bay Trail as well as the architecture of the village. Green Bay Road in Thiensville is an important link in the trail as highlighted in the Wisconsin Ethnic Settlement Trail (WEST) organization.

The MequonThiensville Historical Society Research Center is located in the Logemann Community Center and boasts a significant collection of local historical documents. The Society’s museum project is the Yankee Settler’s Cottage on Cedarburg Road across from Mequon City Hall. This historic 1830s treasure was once the local post office. Beginning in 1981, The Mequon Landmarks Commission designated 27 historical sites starting with the Jonathan Clark House. The sites can be found on the city of Mequon website: www.ci.mequon.wi.us Think like a historian and exercise your imagination by exploring the unique historic sites and organizations in Mequon and Thiensville.

Jonathan Clark House Museum The Jonathan Clark House Museum is a beautiful 1848 Greek Revival structure on the northwest corner of Bonniwell and Cedarburg roads. The museum, now open for tours and events, is a community project with ties to several local organizations including the Mequon-Thiensville School District. The house was constructed for Jonathan Clark, one of Mequon’s early residents and first Supervisors. Clark strongly believed in the value of public education, formed the first public school board and opened the first public school in Mequon. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. 6

GATHERING ON THE GREEN Gathering on the Green has been one of Ozaukee County’s largest cultural attractions since 1994. The two-day outdoor performing arts festival takes place in the sprawling and scenic Rotary Park the second weekend of July each year. Gathering on the Green has not only showcased the best of Milwaukee’s fine arts like the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Ballet, Florentine Opera, but has also brought in some of the biggest national touring acts. And, Gathering on the Green is the only place you will see a fireworks display choreographed to a live orchestral performance! Saturday morning starts off with "Run on the Green" 5K and Youth Fun Run and then features plenty of activities and interactive displays for children of all ages during the day. Best of all, Gathering on the Green makes family fun affordable. All children 12 years and under always receive free lawn admission. Gathering on the Green also hosts the Summer STEAM program in July. It’s the only one of its kind, adding the arts to a STEM-based (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education program that brings together urban and suburban students ages 8-10. During the weeklong camp, students work with professional engineers to learn about the science of sound and even have a chance to make their own instruments. For more information, visit gatheringonthegreen.org.

PARKS The community is filled with parks, both large and small, which provide outdoor fun for the whole family. Area parks feature playground equipment, hiking and biking trails, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, swimming pools, fishing, boating, picnic areas and more. Thiensville Village Park, a spacious 16.3-acre park offering a riverside setting, is an especially popular community venue. In addition to a boat launch, tennis courts and covered pavilion, it offers opportunities to view wildlife and a fish passage on a riverwalk trail. It serves as the site for the Thiensville Farmers’ Market, Family Fun Before the Fourth and the annual Lionfest.

THE LOGEMANN COMMUNITY CENTER The Logemann Community Center is a nonprofit organization that has been a staple in the Mequon community since its opening in 1988. The Community Center is a home to a Family Play Center; a Summer Youth program for middle-schoolers; monthly high school “hang out” events; cooking, gardening, fitness and drivers education classes; a rummage sale; the Special Friends Program which serves adults and teens with special needs; community events; concerts with local bands; and facility rentals.

MEQUON NATURE PRESERVE The Mequon Nature Preserve encompasses 438 acres of land with five miles of hiking trails, a 50-foot observation tower and an education center. The Mequon Nature Preserve “endeavors to enlighten and educate. We link the landscape to people and give children and adults an awareness and appreciation of the environment, through hands-on teaching and free exploration.” For more information, visit mequonnaturepreserve.org.

OZAUKEE INTERURBAN TRAIL The Ozaukee Interurban Trail spans 30 miles, beginning in Mequon and continuing across all of Ozaukee County. The trail is a paved, free-to-the-public path that is a designated “Great Wisconsin Birding Trail.” Visitors to the trail experience beautiful views of the Milwaukee River, Lake Michigan, Cedar Creek, wetlands, forests and farmland all while walking, biking, running, in-line skating and cross-country skiing on the northern portion of the trail.

Concordia University Wisconsin Campus Transformation Continues By Jeff Bandurski, Director of University Relations

C

oncordia University Wisconsin’s longstanding commitment of providing a value-centered education continued this past academic year, as total enrollment approached 8,000 and the latest physical addition to campus – a 274bed residence hall – was dedicated. Professors at the 200-acre university that has been a part of the Mequon community since 1983 reinforce ethics in the classroom, along with promoting intellectual development for an individual’s growth and well-being. Campus transformation persists to meet the growing needs of the student body as well as the community. Robust growth in the School of Business Administration continues, and health care majors including Nursing, Physical Therapy and Pre-Pharmacy that utilize a holistic approach to medicine and are based on strong spiritual concepts remain strong. New master’s programs in Physician Assistant and Athletic Training entered their second year. Kapco Park, situated on the northeast part of a campus that hugs the Lake Michigan shoreline, is home to both the

CUW Falcons and the Lakeshore Chinooks, a Northwoods Wooden Bat League Team that plays 35 home games each summer. Grandstand seating for more than 1,100 fans, with a stadium capacity approaching 2,500, a concession stand, and a children’s playground area makes for an exciting environment to watch baseball. Adjacent to the baseball stadium is Concordia’s Center For Environmental Stewardship, which maintains a strong partnership with the city of Mequon, The Mequon Nature Preserve and The Milwaukee Audubon Society among other organizations. Seventy undergraduate majors and 22 graduate programs are currently offered, including a Global MBA and doctorate programs in Physical Therapy, Pharmacy and Nursing Practice. The School of Pharmacy is only the second such school in Wisconsin and graduated its “Genesis” class of 71 in May. There are also myriad online learning and flexible, accelerated learning opportunities at one of nine off-campus centers in Milwaukee, Kenosha, Waukesha, Appleton, Green Bay, Beloit, Madison and St. Louis.

Undergraduates are challenged to become a part of the vibrant, campus community, as they are offered numerous ways to meet other students, tap into interests outside their majors and discover their leadership potential. A bluff amphitheatre along the half-mile shoreline and a sand beach for bonfires enables students to relax from their studies. Twenty-four NCAA Division III intercollegiate sports, fine arts choices in music and drama, and numerous clubs and organizations are offered at Concordia, whose mission is “A Lutheran higher education community committed to helping students develop in mind, body, and spirit for service to Christ in the Church and the World.” The 133-year-old University, affiliated with The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, was founded in 1881 on Milwaukee’s near west side at historic Trinity Lutheran Church on 9th and Highland. When meeting with an investment advisor/broker, the average investor fears being put in the uncomfortable position of having a product sold to them, when all they’re looking for is some guidance and advice. Inside the walls of Spectrum, located at 6329 W. Mequon Road in Mequon, Jim Marshall, the company’s president, has made it a point to be anything but a stereotype. “We do our best to create a comfortable atmosphere for individuals so they not only feel welcome, but are also able to learn. Education is a missing link within the investment world today and we are trying to change that,” says Marshall. “If they leave having had a positive memorable experience, while also taking away tangible information, we feel as though we’ve succeeded.” To help provide the memorable experience Jim Marshall speaks of, Spectrum has a coffee house inside their office building, which can hold up to 50 individuals for unique in-house seminars with national speakers. Topics range from global market reviews to exclusive human interest stories, like ones told by Jack Harbaugh (pictured left), father of Jim and John Harbaugh, the NFL’s first sibling Super Bowl opposing coaches. During these sessions, guests are served brunch and lunch, along with homemade coffee drinks served by local baristas from Fiddleheads Coffee, another local company with strong ties to the community. And it doesn’t stop there. Between their coffee house and large conference room, many local organizations and groups have reached out to Spectrum to utilize the space for various events. Something that Jim Marshall and the rest of the Spectrum team cherish as a real opportunity to become a center point in the community. This visibility is enhanced with the help of the Mequon/Thiensville Chamber of Commerce who also call the Spectrum Investment Advisors’ building home. “We are blessed to be located next door to such a wonderful local organization doing so much good for the Mequon community,” says Marshall. Recently Spectrum has hosted numerous chamber events, including the Chamber annual board meeting, quarterly “face-to-face” exercises that build networking opportunities, and the annual Mequon/Thiensville Chamber Holiday Gathering. Other groups include the Mequon Gathering on the Green annual board meeting and the Feith Ozaukee Family YMCA board meeting. Spectrum’s versatile space is creating a real opportunity, one that brings the community closer together by allowing a gathering place for hosting events of all types for many individuals to enjoy. “It is all that we have hoped it would be and we look forward to what the future has to hold,” says Marshall. “We couldn’t be happier with the outcome. We love it here.”

equon and Thiensville have strong religious roots that were planted by the area’s earliest settlers. The German and Irish immigrants who made up the majority of the first residents were predominately Catholic and Lutheran, and their faiths were an integral part of their daily lives as they settled this new land. In fact, one of the first buildings to be constructed in Mequon was Wisconsin’s very first Lutheran church.

M

Today, many residents still practice the Catholic and Lutheran faiths, though they have been joined by a diverse group of other beliefs and denominations. Residents will find more than 20 churches and synagogues of different denominations within Mequon and Thiensville that offer worship services, religious education and faith-based activities and programs.
