MultiAd recycles all paper and aluminum in the print production area, as well as all fluorescent light bulbs. We also use vegetable oil based inks, low VOC solvents and alcohol free fountain solutions in the press room. Through October 2010, MultiAd has recycled 860,467 pounds of paper which translates to saving: 7,314 trees, 3,011,610 gallons of water, 163,487 gallons of oil, 1,291 cubic yards of landfill space, 1,720,920 kilowatt hours and 25,814 pounds of air pollutants. We also recycled 21.5 tons of aluminum plates.

ittsburg is a distinct Northern California community situated at the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers. The city has long been a place of advancement, with continuing communitywide improvements being implemented to better serve residents, businesses and visitors alike.

While Pittsburg has committed itself to progress and development, the city also embraces its rich heritage. Current-day Pittsburg is situated on land that came from a 10,000-acre grant from the Mexican government in 1839. From this land came a little community known as New York of the Pacific, which was laid out by native New Yorker Colonel J.D. Stevenson. New York of the Pacific soon became New York Landing – a place that hosted a flourishing fishing and canning industry – and then Black Diamond following the discovery of coal just south of town. Black Diamond was incorporated as a city in 1903. In 1906, the city added a new industry to its mix with the opening of Columbia Geneva Steel. As a result, the community’s moniker changed once more as residents renamed the city Pittsburg after the birthplace of the U.S. steel industry – dropping the “h” at the end to offer a more simplified spelling. Pittsburg continued to develop and welcomed the addition of Camp Stoneman in 1942. The camp served as a training site for troops in the U.S. Army and was the main point of leave for the more than one million American soldiers sent to fight in the Asiatic-Pacific region during World War II. After it closed in 1954, the land was incorporated into the city of Pittsburg, where much in the way of commercial and residential development occurred. Today, Pittsburg is a thriving city of more than 63,000 residents and hundreds of diverse businesses. It is highlighted by the revitalized Old Town district, rich cultural avenues, amenity-filled parks, beautiful homes and exceptional schools. Thanks to the forward-thinking leaders in the local government and such agencies as the Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce, the city continues to expand and enhance its opportunities for both residential living and business success. 4

First Italian fishermen, Pietro Aiello and brother Rosario, began fishing the river. Word of mouth quickly spread and by 1910 it was recorded that nearly 1,000 Italian fishermen and their families worked the rivers and canneries.

After the Korean War, Camp Stoneman closed and the property was added to the city of Pittsburg for commercial and residential development. However, as Camp Stoneman closed its doors, so ended those eras of prosperous times in Pittsburg.
1960s
Buchanan Park Swim Center opens and Pittsburg High School’s Creative Arts Center opens. Both were considered to be among the best in the area with state-of-the-art facilities at that time.

Pittsburg Marina was built, then widely considered the best in the area. It underwent renovations in 2007. Los Medanos College opens, providing twoyear degrees and transfer programs to East County students, in addition to lifelong learning programs.

Pittsburg’s vacant land was seen as a gold mine to developers. From 1981 to 2000, Pittsburg experienced a 59 percent increase in population.
1990s
BART extends its lines to its eastern-most point: the Pittsburg/Bay Point station at Bailey Road. Delta View Golf Course becomes a public course, now ranked in the state’s top 25 golf courses. Highway 4 widening project began.

New HOV lanes added to Highway 4, relieving congestion as Eastern Contra Costa becomes one of the most populous areas of the county. Highway 4 widening projects continued through 2006. Pittsburg’s Centennial Celebration year. Pittsburg’s Auto Plaza opens on Century Blvd. along Highway 4. Pittsburg’s population estimated to grow by 37 percent. New eBART proposed, expanding BART service east another 23 miles, further easing traffic congestion.
HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND MUSEUM The building at 515 Railroad Avenue was purchased in 1997. It was the home to Coast Counties Gas and Electric Company in 1926 and then later became home of the Pittsburg Post-Dispatch newspaper. It was renovated into a modern museum with permanent displays and meeting rooms and was officially opened in 2001. There are many displays at the museum, including a large wall mural depicting the time when only the Indians were here in this area, through the industrial age to the present. Included in the displays are: a small chapel with a replica of the St. Peter Martyr altar and an 1800s organ; Indian artifacts from the early part of the 1800s; artifacts and photos from the mines in Nortonville and Somersville; a multicultural display featuring the Spanish, Mexican, Italian, African-American, Chinese and Filipino cultures; a replica of the Black Diamond airplane built by Maupin in Pittsburg in 1911; a bridal room displaying the early custom of the trousseau; vacuum tubes from the 1950s radio station KECC; the clock from the old Vogue Theatre; a replica of Dave Gatto’s Saloon and Card Parlor; a mural depicting Fat and Skinny’s Ice Cream Wagon of the 1930s; a sports hall of fame room; a family room featuring Pioneer Pittsburg families; a band room; a Camp Stoneman display; a Mayor’s board; the “Una Storia Segreta” telling the story of the Italian internment during WWII; a doctor’s office; a barber shop; a school room and yearbook displays; old town photos from the early 1900s; the Buchanan Store display and their carriage; an old post office; U.S. Steel Mill displays; a wharf scene; the original Seagrave Fire Engine; an old time soda shop; a seamstress shop; laundry and beauty parlor; items from the various fraternal organizations of the 1900s; an archival library for public use; a display of Pioneer Diary items; old cameras and much, much more. The museum is open to the public on Wednesdays from 1pm to 4pm and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to coincide with the Farmer’s Market which is located across the street on the plaza. General membership meetings are held on the premises when announced. Admission is free of charge; however, donations are gratefully accepted. LOCATION & TRANSPORTATION he dynamic city of Pittsburg is positioned in Northern California’s beautiful East Bay Area. Its enviable location places it within a close distance of several big-market cities and a vast transportation network of roadways, rail lines and airports.

California State Route 4 offers an advantageous connection to Interstate 680 approximately 12 miles west of town. Commuters and tourists searching for a cost-effective and convenient way to travel are afforded the services of two public transit options. Tri Delta Transit operates 14 local bus routes during the week and three on weekends and holidays, which link riders with employment centers, schools, parks, shopping centers and Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) terminals. The Pittsburg/Bay Point BART terminal station operates along the yellow line – a route that begins in Pittsburg and ends at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Caltrans is currently widening Highway 4 from Pittsburg east to Hillcrest Avenue in Antioch. With the addition of eBart in 2015, there will be more commute options available. SFO is one of several major airports within reach of the Pittsburg community. Other commercial airports in the region include Oakland International Airport (OAK), San Jose International Airport (SJC) and Sacramento International Airport (SMF). General and corporate aviation needs are met by Contra Costa County Airports, which operates Buchanan Field in nearby Concord, as well as Byron Airport, located approximately 24 miles southeast of town.

ittsburg is bursting with avenues to enjoy culture, entertainment and recreation. From community theatre and local events to modern park amenities, there’s never a shortage of things to do.

CULTURE & ENTERTAINMENT Arts and culture are alive in Pittsburg. The city’s main hub of culture is Old Town Pittsburg. The heart of Pittsburg is bursting with opportunities to shop and dine at a number of unique hometown businesses; view Art About Town, a public arts program featuring local artwork and attractions; and take part in a variety of communitywide events, including the weekly Farmers Market, the Thursday night Old Town Classic Car Show, Hot Summer Nights in August and the much-anticipated Pittsburg Seafood Festival in Old Town Pittsburg – recognized as Contra Costa County’s largest two-day event. Old Town Pittsburg has experienced extensive redevelopment over the years, expanding and refurbishing existing structures, developing new facilities (such as the Old Town plaza) and 12

improving the overall infrastructure of the district. The historic California Theater is also undergoing major renovations in Old Town. After construction, the landmark theater will reopen as a community performing arts center.

CULTURE, ENTERTAINMENT & RECREATION Until then, audiences continue to pack the seats at such venues as Los Medanos College’s Recital Hall and Auditorium, and the Pittsburg Creative Arts Building – an entertainment venue that has recently undergone a $9 million modernization project. Additionally, the Enean Theater, a cultural gem, will be undergoing a significant refurbishment project in the future that will result in a multi-purpose community space. The cultural outlets don’t end there. Moviegoers catch first-run movies at the modern Brenden Theatre Pittsburg 16, while history buffs are invited to explore Pittsburg’s vibrant heritage and culture at the Pittsburg Historical Society Museum. Housed in the historic Post-Dispatch building, the unique museum is highlighted by a number of permanent exhibits, including the Old Town area, the sports room, an Indian artifact display and displays honoring the various cultures and families of Pittsburg.
RECREATION The community is filled with opportunities to enjoy both indoor and outdoor recreation. The city of Pittsburg’s Recreation Department operates more than 20 parks in the community, which offer a variety of amenities, including athletic fields, basketball and tennis courts, picnicking and BBQing, playgrounds and tot lots and more. Among its notable facilities is the refurbished Sullenberger Swim Center, the 600-slip Pittsburg Municipal Marina and the family-friendly Small World Park, a recreation and amusement park featuring opportunities to picnic, fish, play on the tot lots and enjoy exciting rides. The city also provides year-round recreation programming for youth, teens and adults, as well as seniors at the 10,500-square-foot senior center. Delta View Golf Club is Pittsburg’s only 18-hole golf course and is currently under management by Monterey Golf Management Group. Accompanying the offerings of the City Recreation Department, the East Bay Regional Park District offers various activities and manages more than 100,000 acres of parks, recreation areas, shorelines, preserves, trails and other sites throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Pittsburg is home to the 595-acre Browns Island, positioned at the intersection of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers. The island hosts six rare and endangered plant species and an assortment of aquatic birds. The park is open by appointment.

PITTSBURG SEAFOOD FESTIVAL he Seafood Festival helps over 40 non-profit groups in the area and over $300,000 has been contributed to community organizations for over the past twentysix years. The Seafood Festival takes place the weekend after Labor Day in September and is held in Old Town Pittsburg. Following are some of the event highlights festival goers are sure to enjoy:

SEAFOOD Over 40 restaurants serve delicious seafood tastings at no more than $5 a sample. The low cost allows visitors to taste a little bit of every cuisine while spending the day in Old Town Pittsburg.
CALIFORNIA ZINFANDEL CHAMPIONSHIP & DINNER The event kicks off with the annual California Zinfandel Championships and Dinner on the eve of opening day. Over 100 wines are judged prior to an elegant dinner. The wine tasting judges award prizes for bronze, silver and gold. All double gold medal winners are re-tasted at the dinner for the awarding of the Grand Champion Medal. Tasting of the four finalists’ wines are available at each table. SPORTS PAVILION Would you like to sit in the shade, watch the ball game and enjoy a cold beverage? Then sit in the Sports Pavilion, a great place to enjoy the company of others while still in the crowds of the festival. KID’S PLAY LAND The Kid’s Play Land Galleria offers a variety of fun games and attractions sure to entertain the youngest of Festival patrons. Bring your kids to this area of the Festival and have them entertained while you sit back and enjoy the sun.

PITTSBURG MARINA
he Pittsburg waterfront has long been the center of industrial and governmental activity. Today, Pittsburg Marina has emerged as a major recreational facility on the Delta. The near 600-berth capacity makes the Pittsburg Marina one of the largest on the Delta, and it has become a community within itself. The integration of private waterfront homes with public use berthing has created a partnership, making the Pittsburg waterfront one of the city’s major assets.

A newly completed promenade and Plaza Marina building features commercial ventures, a coffee shop and space for a new restaurant. The promenade allows visitors and residents to look out over the newly completed Lowy basin featuring berths from 32 feet to 50 feet long. Lowy basin also features 35+ berths available for overnight guest berthing. The ample number of overnight berthing allows Pittsburg Marina to accommodate large cruiseins, as well as daily or weekend visitors.
The Pittsburg Yacht Club, a private club founded in 1946, is located at 3 Marina Boulevard in Pittsburg, on the delta. Boating cruise-ins are organized to and from other neighboring marinas throughout the summer. The facility is a great location that is available to the public to rent for personal use such as weddings or parties. Individuals that are interested in joining or would like more information on having an event should contact the club at (925) 432-1056. Having a boat is not a requirement for joining! The Pittsburg Marina also has a modern public launch ramp with a bait shop, public park, picnic areas, fishing pier and the Yacht Club. This facility draws many visitors especially when the fishing is good. During the summer our great weather brings many recreational boaters to our free launch ramp. The Pittsburg Marina enjoys a “Clean Marina Certification�. All marina services and maintenance activities are conducted with the utmost care for our environment and our beautiful Delta. With its strategic location at the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers, the Pittsburg Marina is now one of the most affordable marine facilities on the Delta.

EDUCATION childhood program, an afterschool program, high school summer school, independent study, alternative learning and lifelong learning opportunities through the Pittsburg Adult Education Center (PAEC). Through PAEC, adults enroll in a variety of occupational education programs, Adult Basic Education classes, an ESL program, GED and high school diploma courses and more. PAEC also offers academic counseling, support services and job placement assistance. Adults also have the option of utilizing the services of Opportunity Junction, an Antioch-based educational resource that helps low-income adults obtain the skills and confidence needed to support themselves and their family. Special needs students are afforded programs through PUSD and organizations such as Spectrum Center Schools and Programs. The Spectrum Center operates the Delta Campus in Pittsburg, offering a state-certified non-public school for students with special needs, behavioral issues and emotional disorders. The organization also partners with local school districts through the Collaborative Classrooms Program, which allows special needs students to remain at their base school and ease back into district programming. he Pittsburg community is committed to instilling a love of lifelong learning in its students, young and old. Education at all levels and for all abilities is readily available in Pittsburg and its closely surrounding communities, starting with early education through various resources, such as the First Baptist Head Start Program, and continuing through primary and secondary schools and higher learning institutions.

While the majority of children in the area attend Pittsburg USD, some of the outlining boundaries fall into the Mt. Diablo or Antioch school districts. Annually, PUSD enrolls approximately 9,300 students, grades K-12. Pittsburg USD is very proud of the completion of the new Pittsburg High School. This $96 million state-of-the-art facility opened September 2010. Student academic achievement continues to improve with strong instructional programs and innovative practices. BUSINESS & INDUSTRY The city continues to invest in the revitalization of the Old Town Pittsburg District, having spent more than $100 million in redevelopment projects since 2004. The city is also looking into a transit village plan, which would encourage the use of mass transit and bring further housing, shopping, office space and more to the area surrounding the PittsburgBay Point BART terminal station. At this time, the city continues to work on plans for the future development.

In 2009, the city and the unincorporated area of Bay Point acquired designation as an Enterprise Zone, offering tenants state tax credits and further local incentives for relocating and expanding within the zone (the city is waiting on final approval from the state). Earlier in 2009, the city also became part of the East Bay Regional Center Program, which is designed to recruit eligible foreign investors, while at the same time stimulate economic activity and create employment opportunities. Furthermore, the state of California supplies the Recycling Market Development Zone Program, which encourages manufacturers to relocate, expand and take advantage of loans, free product marketing, technical assistance and other incentives. ccessing outstanding healthcare services is important to Pittsburg residents. Major hospital campuses are available in neighboring communities, while in-town patients are afforded a medley of medical resources, including chiropractors, dentists, surgeons, specialists, pharmacies and an excellent county health system, among others.
A
Contra Costa Health Services is an integrated county health system offering a number of quality medical services and programs for thousands of local patients annually. The Pittsburg Health Center is part of the system, providing family medicine, immunizations, pediatrics, women’s health and a list of additional services. The facility’s premises are owned by the Los Medanos Community Health Care District (LMCHD), an informational resource dedicated to enhancing the local health community through various partnerships, collaborations and grants. Residents in Pittsburg also utilize the comprehensive health services of Sutter Delta Medical Center (SDMC) in nearby Antioch. SDMC, a Sutter Health Affiliate, is a not-for-profit hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. Staffed by more than 600 employees, more than 200 physicians and a dedicated group of volunteers, the medical center serves as a leading healthcare resource for Contra Costa County. It is well-equipped with a Level II-designated emergency department, a state-of-the-art Women’s Health Center complete with a Level II Special Nursery, an eight-bed Critical Care Unit, an advanced Wound Care Center and a licensed and accredited Laboratory and Pathology Department. Rounding out the list of services supplied through SDMC are pediatrics, cardiac care, diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation and medical/surgical care. The John Muir Health network also serves the area, operating John Muir Medical Center campuses in Concord and Walnut Creek, along with several off-site facilities throughout the region.
