MultiAd recycles all paper and aluminum in the print production area, as well as all fluorescent light bulbs. We also use vegetable oil based inks, low VOC solvents and alcohol free fountain solutions in the press room. Through October 2010, MultiAd has recycled 860,467 pounds of paper which translates to saving: 7,314 trees, 3,011,610 gallons of water, 163,487 gallons of oil, 1,291 cubic yards of landfill space, 1,720,920 kilowatt hours and 25,814 pounds of air pollutants. We also recycled 21.5 tons of aluminum plates.

Community Overview The Eastern Collier Chamber of Commerce serves the communities of Immokalee, Ave Maria and Big Cypress. The Chamber is located in Immokalee, the most established of the three communities, with Ave Maria located directly southeast. The town of Immokalee, located in the heart of south central Florida, is a non-coastal, agricultural wonderland. While many Florida cities are known for their beaches and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico, Immokalee is known for its relatively small population and pastoral atmosphere. With a rich ranching background beginning in the late 1800s, it’s no wonder that Immokalee has gone on to cement its role as a major farming center and produce supplier during frigid winter months. While other states’ growing seasons are largely spring- and summer-based, the Immokalee growing season runs from October through May. The town helps supply the country and beyond with citrus fruits, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, squashes, eggplants, cantaloupes, watermelons and more while the winter season halts the majority of the country’s other agricultural production. The Eastern Collier Chamber of Commerce also represents the nearby community of Ave Maria and up-and-coming Big Cypress. The vision of Ave Maria began in 2002 when the groundwork was laid to create a large, Southern Catholic university. To complement the addition of the new university, a community was built in tandem with the university’s construction. The result is a sixneighborhood town that enjoys reaping the benefits of its proximity to the university: diverse dining options, a pedestrian-friendly town layout and an array of daily entertainment options. The communities of Eastern Collier County are proud of their heritage and diversity. History The area that is now the town of Immokalee was once inhabited by the Calusa Indians. Centuries later, the Seminole Indians set up temporary camps on the high prairie land during their seasonal hunting expeditions, recognizing early on what an ideal location Collier County was for hunting, gathering and farming. The first permanent settlement was established in 1873, and over the years, several well-known history figures settled in the area, such as William Allen, the Carsons, the Wilksons and William Brown, Indian trader. The federal government officially recognized the area as a community in 1897, calling it “Allen’s Place” after settler William Allen. Prior to Allen’s arrival, the region was known as Gopher Ridge by the Miccosukee Indians. Later, the community was renamed Immokalee, the Seminole word for “my home.” Immokalee, a relatively isolated community, saw a slow population growth until 1921 when the Atlantic Coast Line Railway extended its service and opened a direct overland route to both trade and communication. When Collier County was created in 1923, more growth was made possible by Barron G. Collier’s efforts to provide a highway and railroad from Immokalee to the county seat of Everglades City. Over the next twenty years, the industries of lumber and oil production merged with Immokalee’s famed ranching industry, further fastening Immokalee’s position as a leader in agriculture and production. Today, Immokalee is one of Collier County’s largest noncoastal communities and residents are continually looking toward the future. The legacy left behind by the Seminoles has become a part of the community’s everyday life. The Seminole Indians pride themselves on being the “unconquered tribe of Florida,” having left behind the Seminole Casino and the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum in their wake.

Location & Transportation Eastern Collier County is contiguous with several major Florida cities. Naples, a timehonored vacation destination, is just 45 minutes southwest of Immokalee. Miami, another popular vacation destination, is 90 minutes southeast. The prominent beach town of Fort Myers is just 45 minutes northwest of Immokalee, and those who like to fish are in luck, as the expansive Lake Okeechobee is just an hour northeast of the town. There are several airports proximal to the area. Immokalee Regional Airport, a rapidly growing airport, is home to two runways, a self-service 24-hour fuel farm and a terminal building with a conference room, pilot’s lounge and flight-planning room. Its strategic location between Miami and Naples makes it the go-to airport for private flights. The Collier County Airport Authority oversees the development and management of this airport as well as the Marco Island Executive Airport, the Everglades Airpark and the Florida Tradeport. For international air travel, the area is served by Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), which services the counties of Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades; Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), which offers nonstop service to more than 55 U.S. cities; and Miami International Airport (MIA), the largest U.S. gateway to Latin American/Caribbean destinations. Of course road travel is a breeze, too, with State Routes 29 and 82 and County Highway 846 leading into and out of Immokalee.

Homes Home values are extremely affordable in Immokalee, with the average house/condo valued at $130,153, which is $88,547 less than Florida’s average housing value of $218,700. Townhouse values sit around $71,744, with mobiles homes around $26,061 and occupied boats, RVs and vans at $12,500. Though it is affordable to buy, the town is very renter-friendly; 61 percent of the community rents, a 31 percent jump from the Florida state average. Ave Maria has six neighborhoods and offers a variety of price ranges from rental apartments to single-family

dwellings to large estates. The town is extremely walkable, having been built around a college campus. Shopping centers and the university itself are within walking distance from much of the housing in this peaceful, small town. The communities of Eastern Collier County are each located in proximity to several entertainment options, such as airboat rides, greyhound racing, museums, the Seminole Casino, Lake Trafford and more, making it an ever-appealing residential portion of southern Florida.

Parks & Recreation Eastern Collier County is overflowing with outdoor recreational opportunities and tourist destinations. One of the most frequented destinations in the area is Lake Trafford, a 1,500-acre freshwater lake. Lake Trafford and Corkscrew Swamp offer airboat tours, affording visitors an up close and personal look at the gators Florida is so famously known for. Lake Trafford is an important element, and widely considered the headwaters of the historic Everglades ecosystem of Florida’s west coast. Many species of bird and fish can be found near the lake, making it a perfect location for birders, fishermen and photographers. Immokalee is also home to a few parks, including Immokalee Airport Park, Immokalee Community Park and Aquatic Center and South Immokalee Park. Immokalee Airport Park, home to a picnic pavilion, amphitheater and playground, is popular for birthday parties and family gatherings. Immokalee Community Park is another park that is popular with families, as it has a lit baseball/softball field, basketball courts, picnic area, lit playground, tennis court, four-wall racquetball court and picnic shelter. South Immokalee Park has basketball courts, a playground area and a large grassy area for recreation. Ave Maria also has a significant amount of parks and recreational space, with around 45 percent of the town’s area designated for recreation and lakes. If you need a break from the hot Floridian sun, there are plenty of indoor fun options in the area, too. The Seminole Casino is a frequently visited location for gaming, bingo and poker, and its well-known Seminole-themed restaurant is a hit among locals and visitors alike.

Education The School District of Collier County, a district of 50 schools—30 elementary schools, 11 middle schools, 8 high schools and one pre-K–12 school—serves the Eastern Collier County. In August of 2007, the district welcomed 130 students from a variety of grades, as Ave Maria was gifted land for an elementary school and a middle school. The district is ahead of the curve where adult and continuing education is concerned, boasting a Career and Adult Education program, which serves over 12,000 students annually through the Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology, the Immokalee Technical Center and at various sites of adult education throughout the county. In the 2009-10 school year, Collier County Public Schools earned an “A” grade from the Florida Department of Education, its second “A” in a row. Nearly 3,000 teachers are employed by the district, and 49 percent of them hold advanced degrees in their teaching subject. These teachers are of the best paid in the State of Florida. For those seeking private or parochial education, there are several options in and around Collier County, including Steps to the Future Christian Academy, Corkscrew Christian School, St. John Neumann Catholic School and Royal Palm Academy, plus many more. Higher education in Collier County earns good marks as well. Hodges University, Florida Gulf Coast University and the new Ave Maria University, which opened its doors the most recently in 2003, are all within a reasonable distance. Public, private and religious universities and community colleges are scattered throughout Collier County, making higher education easily attainable for students from all walks of life.

Ave Maria University Thomas Monaghan, founder of Domino’s Pizza and chairman of the Ave Maria Foundation, had a dream to build an option in Catholic higher education for students in the southeastern portion of the U.S. No previous Catholic educational institutions had been implemented in over 40 years, the last being in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1963. With the help of the Barron Collier Companies and an initial donation of $250 million, Ave Maria University opened its doors in August 2003 at its interim campus in Naples. The advent of the new university spurred the growth of a community aptly named Ave Maria; the university is now located at 5050 Ave Maria Boulevard. The community is around 5,000 acres, of which 20 percent is designated to the university’s campus. As one of the first modern towns to be developed alongside a burgeoning university, life, education and a shared sense of religion merge seamlessly in Ave Maria. The university offers majors in Biology & Chemistry, Business, Classics/Early Christian Literature, Economics, History, Literature, Mathematics & Physics, Philosophy, Politics, Psychology, Music and Theology. Healthcare Residents of Eastern Collier County have easy access to area hospitals and medical centers. Several medical centers are within an hour’s drive, providing care from annual exams to long-term care and everything in between. NCH Healthcare System operates two hospitals in Collier County, NCH Downtown Naples Hospital and NCH North Naples Hospital. Between the two, there are 681 beds and over 30,000 patients per year are served by the hospitals’ outstanding physicians. NCH is a notfor-profit 510(c)(3) corporation most known for its Regional Cancer Institute, Shick Heart Center and General David H. and Shirley A. Baker Women & Children’s Pavilion. In 2010, the hospital won a bounty of awards and was recognized for its achievements several times over. The healthcare system was ranked #1 for overall cardiac services, cardiology services and coronary interventional procedures and was in the top 5 percent in the nation for national GI medical treatment and the top 10 percent for stroke treatment, overall orthopedic services and overall pulmonary services. Collier Health Services (CHS), which operates Marion E. Fether Medical Center in Immokalee, is another health system serving the residents of Eastern Collier County. Marion E. Fether Medical Center was built in 1993 and is CHS Healthcare’s largest health care delivery site. Its services include adult care, diabetic care, immigration physicals, HIV testing and counseling, dental care, radiology, lab tests, dietary evaluations, health education classes, transportation and translation assistance and more. CHS is a private, not-for-profit health care provider running 11 other facilities outside of Marion E. Fether Medical Center. CHS offers basic primary medical and dental services to over 27,000 patients per year. Lehigh Regional Medical Center also serves Collier County. Lehigh Regional Medical Center is located in the nearby city of Lehigh Acres, just 15 miles west of Immokalee. This 88-bed facility is served by over 50 physicians. Business & Industry AGRICULTURE Collier County thrives on agriculture. The growing season between October and May is met with an annual shortlived population burst. Thousands of migrant workers from different ethnic groups converge in central Florida to handle Immokalee’s bountiful harvest, in turn boosting the area’s economy. Immokalee grows and harvests citrus fruits; vegetables such as cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, squashes and eggplants; and more. It should come as no surprise, then, that the industries of agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting account for 39 percent of male employment in Immokalee and 14 percent of female employment. Other leading industries in the area include grocery and merchant wholesalers, accommodation and foodservices, administrative support and waste management services and healthcare.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Several economic development blueprints are in the works in Collier County. With Immokalee Regional Airport becoming a Foreign Trade Zone in January 1997, the direction for the area’s economic sector can only head up. Its distinction as a Foreign Trade Zone by the U.S. Department of Commerce allows companies that manufacture within the industrial park to import raw materials to manufacture their products and export them duty-free. Sixty of the airport’s acres are of Foreign Trade Zone status.
A major incentive of the CRA is that the agency can help Immokalee businesses find programs that induce growth. A few of these programs include HUBZone, Immokalee Rural Enterprise Zone, Free Foreign Trade Zone and the Collier County Economic Stimulus Program. HUBZone Sponsored by the Federal SBA, HUBZone can be advantageous for eligible businesses within this zone when competing for federal contracts. Immokalee Rural Enterprise Zone A few of the perks of eligible businesses located within this zone include: job tax credits; sales tax refunds for business machinery, equipment, building materials and electrical energy used; property tax credit; community contribution tax credit; and more. Free Foreign Trade Zone (Immokalee Regional Airport/Florida Tradeport) Businesses within this zone are eligible for waived or delayed duties and taxes. Collier County Economic Stimulus Program This program provides incentives to targeted industries to expand or even relocate to Collier County. An important leader in the area’s economy is the Collier County Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). The CRA was established in March of 2000 and was implemented to improve two of the county’s redevelopment areas—the Bayshore Gateway Triangle Redevelopment Area and the Immokalee Redevelopment Area. IMMOKALEE REGIONAL AIRPORT Immokalee Regional Airport has experienced true growth in the past few years. Several mutually beneficial projects are in place that boost the economy while making flying in and out of the airport convenient for all Collier County residents. Long-range plans have been approved; the eastwest runway will be expanded from 5,000 to 7,000 feet and up to 13,000 feet, and the airport will soon have the capability of housing up to 65 aircrafts.
