It’s always been a juggling act to keep Village People true to its original concept of being just for residents living in rural villages, but more and more we are being asked to provide our magazine to people living in the market towns of South Norfolk as well.
To satisfy this demand I’m pleased to say that we now have prominent stands full of our fabulous magazines situated in key places for ‘town folk’ to pick up a free copy. TWO EXCITING NEW EXHIBITIONS OPEN IN NORWICH This October, the life and work of British photographer Olive Edis (1876-1955) is to be celebrated in the first exhibition dedicated to her 50 year-long career. Featuring more than 190 rare photographs, it showcases Edis’ wide-ranging portraiture from British royalty to dignified Norfolk fishermen, together with her important work as the
first-ever accredited female war photographer. Fishermen and Kings: The Photography of Olive Edis is open from 8 October to 22 January at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery. Meanwhile, the largest and most comprehensive exhibition about Fiji ever assembled also comes to the city, revealing stunning

The exhibition will take visitors on a journey through the art and cultural history of this dynamic South Seas archipelago since the late 18th century. Fiji: Art and Life in the PaciďŹ c is open from 15 October to 12 February at The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.
PHOTOGRAPHY ON THE PLATFORM AT DISS RAIL STATION Rail passengers on the Norwich to London mainline can find out about the delights of the Waveney Valley as they pass through Diss station, thanks to a newly-installed photographic exhibition along the platforms. Large photographs of iconic and well-loved locations in the Waveney Valley such as Diss Mere, Ellingham Mill, Somerleyton, the Angles Way footpath, Bungay Castle and Harleston antiques market have been installed along both platforms to increase tourism and travel to the area, promoting this beautiful
destination to people as they pass through on the train. The project – a partnership between Abellio Greater Anglia, Norfolk County Council, South Norfolk District Council, Diss Town Council, the Waveney Valley Towns Team and the Diss Rail Station Group – is the first to be delivered under the Diss Station Travel Plan which, along with the exhibition, was launched this summer. The Travel Plan aims to make further improvements for passengers at Diss rail station, so keep a look out for more good news!
CARDS FOR GOOD CAUSES From 10 October to 17 December, the Forum in Norwich will be hosting the Multi Charity Christmas Shop. There will be stalls selling cards for more than 40 charities plus gifts, gift wrap, traditional advent calendars and lots more. It’s a great way to raise money for charity whilst getting everything you need to prepare for Christmas. The shop will be located in the library for the first 3 weeks, so if you like to get Christmas sorted early see you there!

HARLESTON AND DISS JOIN FORCES FOR THE
Waveney Valley Food & Drink Festival Harleston’s Future and the Diss Town Team will jointly host this year’s Waveney Valley Food and Drink Festival from 3–16 October.
A
range of food shops, cafes and restaurants in both towns will be running special offers and tastings during the festival. The first week will focus on events in Harleston with demonstrations, tastings and a food trail, culminating in‘A Taste of Harleston’on Saturday 8 October. Nicky Stainton of Harleston’s Future said:“Local businesses are really keen to get involved. We had such a successful event last October that we plan to build on that to offer more activities and attract even more people to the town. On the Saturday there will be a foodie street market, open farm visits in a vintage bus, a food trail and street entertainment.” Diss will be the focus of the second weekend (14–16 October), with a farmers’market, cooking workshops, tastings and demonstrations in the Heritage Triangle. The 7th Corn Hall Beer Festival will be held in the Boiler House on Friday and Saturday, accompanied by lively music and street food stalls. The festival will conclude with a deluxe brunch on Sunday 16 October. John Atkinson, one of the Diss organisers, said: “This is the second time Diss has participated in the festival. Last year was a great success with the majority of cafes, restaurants and shops reporting good business. The public response was‘Do it again please!’” The festival is supported by South Norfolk Council’s Market Towns Initiative, designed to promote the towns of Diss, Harleston, Loddon and Wymondham. Councillor Clayton Hudson, cabinet member for Stronger Communities and Leisure said:“Our Market Towns Initiative is about working together to promote the local economy and South Norfolk as a fantastic place to visit. Events like the food festival boost the profile of the four towns and we are delighted that Harleston and Diss have combined to promote their own and each other’s attractions.”

hat do we call a non-staged choral work, usually having a religious theme? That was just one of the questions in a music quiz held at the Burgate Singers’ summer party last year. The answer, of course, is ‘oratorio’: the Burgate Singers have performed many of these works over the years, along with operas, masses, requiem masses and shorter choral works. The Singers were founded in 1977 by Alain Judd as an ad hoc choir to perform Messiah as part of a huge fund-raising drive to pay for urgent repairs to the roof of Burgate Church. The choristers enjoyed themselves so much that they decided to carry on learning and performing great musical works. The list of past concerts includes such well-known works as Verdi’s Requiem, Bach’s Mass in B minor, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin (sung in Russian!) and Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus …. and the list goes on. What makes the Singers different from most amateur choirs is that the conductor (still Alain Judd) is a professional singer and insists on engaging a professional orchestra (named the Burgate Sinfonia for the occasion) and professional soloists. Some of the Singers’ early soloists have gone on to be well-respected soloists: Diana Montague is one such. Usually, the Singers give their Christmas concert in the Corn Hall in Diss, but in 2015 the hall was closed for refurbishment, and the Singers gave their performance of Jephtha (Handel) in the magnificent Church of St. Peter and Paul in Eye. It was a joy to sing there, as the acoustic is ideal for Baroque music. The exciting Spring 2016 concert was also given in Eye church. The programme included the first public performance with orchestra of the Requiem for an Unknown Soldier composed by the late John Carol Case, who may be well-known to our readers as a distinguished bass-baritone.

Rehearsals for the 2016 Christmas concert begin on Sunday 25 September; the programme is a mix of Mozart and two twentieth-century works; William Walton’s orchestral music to the 1944 film of Henry V, and the Gloria of Francis Poulenc (1961). The concert will take place on Saturday 3 December in Eye Town Hall.

et ready for some razzle dazzle this autumn as Chicago comes to Norwich. The classic Twenties musical is set to wow audiences and features an all-star cast, including Hayley Tamaddon who was last on the Theatre Royal stage in panto as Sleeping Beauty. Hayley has played much-loved soap characters such as Andrea Beckett in Coronation Street and Delilah Dingle in Emmerdale, and she won the fifth series of ITV1’s Dancing On Ice. Now she is poised to take on the iconic part of Roxie Hart as the UK tour of Chicago reaches the city from October 31 to November 5. “I think it is the best musical there is,” says Hayley. “There is lots of singing, dancing and acting. It is hard work too – my character is barely off stage!” As Roxie, Hayley finds herself behind bars with fellow murderess Velma Kelly, with only lawyer Billy Flynn standing between her and death row. John Partridge, who plays Billy, boasts a strong musical theatre pedigree and has starred in Eastenders as Christian Clarke. Fans of the soap will also recognise Jessie Wallace, aka Kat Slater, as Mama Morton.
Hayley says that stepping into Roxie’s shoes is a dream come true. “I had wanted to play her for years,” she says, “but I worried that I wouldn’t be fit enough! My stamina has definitely improved though.” She first started performing at the age of two, but a back problem at 16 meant she was forced to turn her attention from dance to drama. Since then, she has enjoyed numerous theatre credits including The Lady In The Lake in Spamalot which marked her first Norwich appearance. She also enchanted local panto audiences when she took on the lead role in the 2011-12 festive spectacular Sleeping Beauty. Chicago has brought her new challenges and she admits that there have been some tough moments: “There are some days when you feel ill, or your voice isn’t feeling great, or you’ve had some bad news maybe, but the show must and does go on regardless,” she says. And she is loving being part of the Chicago family. “It’s great fun when you’ve got a good group of people, and the Chicago team are brilliant. There can’t be many lines of work where you start a job and within a couple of days, you’re hugging each other and zipping each other into clothes!”

hane Taylor was one of the most dangerous men behind bars until a dramatic divine encounter made him a model inmate who left jail to mentor ex-offenders and inspire prisoners.
Shane told an Attleborough audience last year about the love of God that moved him to tears and set him straight. During Prisons Week this October the reformed character will visit prisons and churches to tell the story of his turnaround. Nowadays Shane is a doting father with a strong Christian faith who works with former prisoners: “I meet them at the prison gates, mentor them and bring God into their lives because I know God is going to change them – he changed me,” he said. “I am now married with four beautiful children and I do bible studies at night. God has changed the path of my family and changed the next generation.” Previously he went on a 17-year rampage of violence, theft and drugs. At 19 he was arrested after two attempted murders and after a number of incidents at HMP Holme House, near Middlesborough, he was segregated and known by the Home Office as one of the six most dangerous prisoners in the country. “In prison I went wild. I lost hope, I lost love and I
did not care if I got ‘life’ as I lost all my inhibitions,” said Shane at an Alpha supper, exploring Christianity, hosted by Christ Community Church. As a teenager he took on society and authority after he was bullied at school. He was soon mixing with the wrong crowd and he made daring daylight burglaries while the occupants were at home. “I carried a full set of knives around my waist. When I pulled out a knife I intended to hurt someone. I did not have any morals. I became a feared drug dealer. Life was about my reputation, showing everyone that they should not cross me,” recalls Shane. After doing time in a string of maximum security prisons, Shane eventually responded to an Alpha invite because of the biscuits and debates. Finally he made a desperate plea to God: “If you are real come into my life – I hate who I am; I hate who I have become.” Suddenly, he was unable to stop sobbing. “I could feel a weight being lifted from me. In a split second I knew God was real and Jesus had touched me.” Weeks later Shane’s changed behaviour meant a trusted job with the prison chaplaincy before leaving prison a year later.

Hoe or rake over the empty flower beds leaving them neat and tidy, they won’t be colourful but they won’t look unkempt. Sweep paths and steps and make sure they are all free from mossy growths which can be lethal when encountered unexpectedly covered in icy frost. You can get rid of such growths with the use
of special products you can buy from your garden centre. If you have garden furniture, wash it and put it away. Metal parts should first be liberally coated with petroleum jelly and wooden parts will benefit from a dressing of linseed oil. Check your gates. A drop of oil to the hinges will stop them squeaking and sticking when the weather gets bad, and if the latches don’t work well, now is the time to make sure they do or the wind will hammer and bang and soon demolish them. Likewise check the garage doors. If they are sticking or catching now, they will be worse as the winter progresses. Timely action will prevent many problems occurring later on. None of these jobs are hard, beyond the able bodied amateur or expensive to carry out. They are just routine, sensible measures to ensure that your property is as well ordered outside as it is cosy within. What more could you ask for this winter?

culptures, statues and features in the garden may serve little or no practical purpose, but whether it’s a single classical piece carefully placed at the end of a long vista, or a cheerful sprite perched by the gate to welcome all who pass through, they add a certain something to their surroundings. Ornaments are subject to personal taste, and of course beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder! Positioning is important, gargoyles and grotesques work well in niches, on top of walls, or peering out from between tree trunks. For shady spots try a sleepy dragon curled up under some hostas, or stone frogs peeping out from amongst ferns. If you have a more arid style of garden, a cheeky meerkat sticking his head up out of drifts of ornamental grasses will raise a smile, or maybe a tortoise or two languishing in the sun. Having concrete critters in the garden may not be to your taste (at least they don’t need feeding) but features come in many shapes, styles and sizes. It could be as simple as an elegant but empty pot or urn as the focal point, or an interestingly-shaped log, tree trunk or rock placed on either a scree of gravel or a bed of bark chips to create a pleasing effect. Living features can be equally dramatic, trees such as the Himalayan birch (Betula jacquemontii) which have outstanding white bark look great as single or multi-stemmed specimens on their own or in groups, especially when planted in front of a dark background. For an upright accent, columnar shrubs stand to attention, and red-leaved choices such as Sambucus Black Tower or Berberis Red Pillar will again make a strong colour contrast to surrounding shades of green. Many types of conifer will give an all-yearround evergreen structural element, take a look at some varieties of blue spruce with their beautiful glaucous needles, or golden forms of yew for inspiration.
Elsewhere in the garden, lengths of castellated or cloud-pruned hedges look fantastic undulating around boundaries, while topiary features can be clipped into neat geometric shapes or made as wacky as your imagination allows! Try small-leaved Lonicera nitida as a tough and faster-growing alternative to traditional box if you’re a little on the impatient side. Ornamental metal bird feeding stations or stone bird baths which are kept topped up with a plentiful supply of quality food and water will help attract bird life into your garden, offering a treat for them and a visual delight for you. If space allows, put up a few types of nest box to encourage garden birds to stay and breed, and they will reward you in return by keeping aphids and caterpillars under control. Metal wind-spinners provide mesmerising motion in the garden, and when the wind abates the spinner becomes a static work of art. At night, solarlit features add a new dimension to your outside space, from elegant animal silhouettes, flickering candles and jars for tables, to super-bright motionsensitive lights, and if you love the sound of water in the garden how about a self- contained spurting frog water-feature also powered by the sun? It’s your garden, indulge yourself, or treat someone else to a great gift that you’d be happy to receive for yourself!

MAKE YOUR GARDEN BIRD FRIENDLY At this time of year, birds are starting to build up their reserves for winter. This means that they need lots of food, so make sure you keep your bird table topped up. Suet and fat balls are particularly good during colder weather because they are high in energy but you don’t need to buy food specially. Kitchen scraps and natural breakfast cereals are all good for birds, along with fruit and leftover rice. Just don’t put out anything mouldy and

try to avoid bread. Many birds are reliant on the food we put out for them so keep feeding them all year round. Water is also really important for drinking and washing, especially when temperatures drop below freezing. Keep the water topped up and check for ice in colder weather. Position your bird table next to trees or a shed, so that birds can easily hop on and off. Just make sure it’s out of range for any curious cats!

HARVEST AUTUMN VEGETABLES
Autumn is the perfect time for fruit pies – apple and blackberry is a particular favourite. Harvest any remaining apples before they are blown onto the ground and gather some blackberries. What’s more comforting than a homemade fruit pie on a chilly autumn afternoon! Quinces will be ready in mid-October and can be made into a delicious jelly which goes perfectly with cheese boards or cold meats. If you have an apple glut, making apple jelly is a great way to use them up. Try mixing apple with mint or sage for a jelly to complement all the Sunday
Now’s the time to harvest anything left in your kitchen garden before the frosts. Dig up any root crops like potatoes, carrots and beetroot. Dry them thoroughly and discard any rotten or diseased tubers before storing the healthy ones in dark boxes or sacks. Leave any pumpkins and squashes in the sun for a few days after harvesting to allow the skins to harden. Then store them in a cool, dark place (or turn them into lanterns for Halloween!) Plant your winter vegetables like lettuces, autumn onions, spring cabbages and any overwintering broad beans. If you plant garlic now, it will be ripe by June – sow individual cloves six inches apart, so that just the tip shows. Make sure these are all insulated with fleece or cloches to protect them from the cold and the birds. It’s time to bring your herbs inside, so pot up your mint, parsley and chive using multipurpose compost. Place them on a sunny windowsill, keep them well watered, and enjoy the crop well into winter.

Thai Pumpkin & Seafood Curry
T
his is a fantastic and simple recipe, and is also a great foundation for many curries. This version uses salmon (an excellent source of omega 3’s for those of us wanting to be healthy) along with the very seasonal pumpkin (which is an excellent source of Vitamins A, C, and E, and is very low in cholesterol and saturated fat).
Ingredients 500g salmon fillet, skinned and cut into 1 inch chunks (ask your fishmonger to skin the salmon for you) 500g prawns, raw and peeled 1kg pumpkin (or butternut squash), peeled & cut into 1 inch chunks 400ml tin coconut milk (reduced fat option if you wish) 1 tbsp Thai curry paste (yellow or red) 350ml fish stock (a cube is fine) 3tbsp fish sauce (nam pla) 2tbsp castor sugar ½ tsp turmeric 1 handful of bok choy, or any leafy green vegetable, roughly torn or chopped Juice of half a lime Chopped coriander to serve

Don’t be put off by some of these ingredients if they’re new to you; they are all readily available nowadays, and prove to be store cupboard basics for this curry base! In a large saucepan or casserole, and over a medium heat, start by combining the curry paste with a little of the coconut milk, then mixing as you go, add in the rest of the coconut milk, fish stock, fish sauce, sugar and turmeric. Bring to the boil. Add in the pumpkin and cook on a decent simmer for approx 15 minutes until the pumpkin is tender (keep checking as pumpkins and squash vary, you could get away with 5 minutes for

Still on a fast simmer, add in the salmon and prawns, and when cooked through (3-4 minutes), stir in your green veg. Once the vegetables have wilted, add in the lime juice, adding the juice of the remaining half to your taste if preferred. Sprinkle with the chopped coriander and serve immediately! Tip: a couple of bruised lemon grass sticks add to the flavour of the curry base, if available.

he flagship Maserati model has been relaunched for 2017 with an exterior restyling, more refinement for the cabin and extra high-tech features.
The exterior of the facelifted Quattroporte has brought a new bumper design with a matte black profile at the front. It is more pointed and commanding, and it introduces vertical chrome elements that contrast with the deepness of the shark nose effect. Inside, improvements to the cabin include a high resolution 8.4” screen with multi-touch function. The screen is integrated with a new climate control function, while an air quality sensor improves comfort levels for occupants on-board. This system calculates the external pollution levels and prevents unclean air and toxic gases from entering the cabin.

Soft, muted colour palettes Kitchen colours are changing and softer colours are popular for everything from cabinets to splashbacks. Charcoal greys and neutral pastels like pale blue, pale green and tinted whites are the new alternative to the standard white. Bold primary colours are on the back burner for now. Instead, interior designers are using Farrow & Ball type colours as accents. 2. Smart spaces Get ready for a hi-tech makeover. More kitchens will have designated spots for smart devices next year. Plan areas with hidden charging stations to store your devices so that they are always at hand and charged.The 2016 kitchen focuses on convenience for families on-the-go with accessible smart appliances like steam ovens, built-in coffee machines and wine coolers.
4. Integrated kitchen-living spaces We are seeing more streamlined kitchen designs in which the kitchen converges with the living space. Designers are merging kitchens and living rooms by including hidden and integrated appliances.
3. Metal range hoods This year, metal will assume a more dominant role in kitchen aesthetics and trump wood as the range hood of choice. If you’re planning to decorate with neutral colour tones, a metal hood can introduce a burst of contrast into your kitchen.
5. Well-lit cabinetry Homeowners won’t just settle for ceiling lights and table lamps to illuminate their kitchens. Designers say extensive low-voltage lighting is a trend to watch because it allows the homeowner to set the mood in their kitchen.

The Stowaway cat In Part 3, Su agreed to look after Mr Curtis’ cat, Muffin, while he was away. But she got more than she bargained for and ended up with her skirt stuck in his washing machine door!

uffin was beginning to pace up and down to ease the gnawing hunger in his stomach. It occurred to me that the washing machine might need to be plugged in, in order to open the door and free my skirt. I switched it on, pressed ‘door open’ and prepared myself.
Cottage to retrieve my skirt. One sharp pull from Jess did the trick, without damaging the machine or my skirt. Muffin took advantage of my visit to point out that he had done an exemplary job licking the pattern off his plate, and started purring for more. I emptied the tin onto the back of his head as he and I moved towards his plate simultaneously.
“Oh no! Surely I don’t have to do a whole wash cycle just to get the ruddy door to open, do I?” I asked my new pal.
“Sorry Muffin, here let me…” I scraped it off him and plopped it on his plate.
There was only one thing to do. I slipped out of my skirt, leaving it hanging there, and walked about the place in my knickers and wellies whilst I opened the tin and fed Muffin. Now I could return my attention to the problem of my skirt. I poked and prodded various buttons in a selection of differing sequences but nothing would persuade the door to open. The only thing I could do was to leave it there until Mr Curtis returned, and put up with the inevitable embarrassment. Fortunately Mr Curtis’ garden was overgrown with untended shrubs, so my shame and nakedness were not visible from the lane. I was not much of a runner at the best of times managing only fifth in the hundred yards dash at school - but even wearing wellies I achieved a personal best over the distance from Mr Curtis’ gate to my front door.
I wondered what to do with the empty can; cat food tins in the rubbish bin soon start to stink, and it was at least five days until collection day. “Stick it in the freezer till rubbish day; that’s what I do with chicken bones and stuff like that. Saves them going off,” said Jess. “Actually that’s not a bad idea, where is the freezer?” Jess shrugged as she opened a door: “Might be in here?” she suggested. It was a shallow cupboard, barely big enough to contain all the brooms, dustpans, and dusters that were piled in there. “Wrong again.” Jess was now on the trail of the freezer with an interested Muffin at her heels. The A-Z of Curious Suffolk M
In this issue, Sarah Doig departs from her usual series of articles to tell us about her new book which was published by The History Press in August.
y brief from the publisher was clear and concise; a book containing 50,000 words with 65 illustrations, arranged in an A-Z format with lots of short sections under intriguing titles. This was easier said than done! The challenge was to ensure good a geographical spread, with stories spanning many centuries about a mix of people, places and happenings. For instance, under BEACONS I describe how the country’s first lighthouse came to be built in Lowestoft, the former Beacon Course and Beacon Post in Newmarket, and the curious tale of flying pigs in Bury St Edmunds… …The completion and enlargement of St Edmundsbury Cathedral was the inspiration of the architect Stephen Dykes Bower who drew up the original design for the completed cathedral which included a spectacular Gothic tower. Although he was able to see much of his dream become reality there was simply not enough money to complete the tower. When he died in 1994 he left £2 million towards the tower
project which turned into what became pr the ambitious Millennium Project. Prince Pr Charles, HRH The Prince of Wales, wa the project’s patron and laid the was first brick in July 2001. In an earlier comment co about the scheme he called the new tower a “spiritual beacon of the future”. futur Unfortunately, the East Anglian Daily Times misprinted the quote, leading to comment in the national press pr about pigs flying (they had printed it as “spiritual bacon”)! Poems and Pieces composed and arranged for any occasion”. And it seems that Samuel Hart did indeed cater for all eventualities: if his cures did not work, then he would compose an epitaph for the gravestone! His literary genius lives on chiselled into the local gravestones and includes this one for Hannah, wife of William Farthing, who died in 1854: Her last words when on her deathbed lie, She spoke plain and not bewilderin: She said dear husband I must die; Pray provide for my poor children.

So we decided to have a picnic party with a difference. No soggy tomato sandwiches and warm Pimms. Just beautifully prepared food, done by someone else. Have you ever thought of having caterers in for a party? It’s not as expensive as you might imagine – oh and the work you save! All our food was prepared, served and cleared away by two happy ladies in smart waitress uniforms. These are the ladies from Three Tiers Catering whose name came from their original concept – afternoon tea served on a three tier cake-stand. You select the venue, which can be anywhere from your own home to a more formal setting. On arrival we found that each table had its own picnic basket full of food ready to be served, all we had to do was take our seats. And eat! Our first course consisted of lovely finger sandwiches with assorted fillings – egg, cheese, ham and chicken with a large sausage plait per table to cut up and share. There were pots of homemade chutney and coleslaw, and the dinkiest little tarts filled with cheese and leek. We couldn’t wait to start eating. Our later courses were delivered individually by Liz and Jackie. We had scones and jam followed by a trio of mini desserts: lemon Eton mess served in pretty coffee cups, chocolate profiteroles and fruit custard tartlets. They might be mini in size but they are maxi in taste and presentation, and you get a trio of each per person. Then there was the option of cheese and biscuits with coffee or tea to follow.

Pretty flowers, fresh tablecloths and a framed menu complete the service – oh, and the clearing away and washing up too! All that for about £6.50 per head! The ladies can accommodate bookings that include breakfasts, weddings, funerals, beach parties, anniversaries and birthdays. The minimum number that these ladies will cater for is approximately 20, which is perfect for groups such as book clubs, line dancing teams, swimming groups, sewing circles – you name it, and there is no maximum number. You will need to book in advance, so don’t hesitate to get in touch straight away. Vegetarian and gluten-free food can be ordered. We really enjoyed our treat, and best of all, all we were encouraged to make full use of doggy-bags for what little there was left lef at the end.
Many of the items were homemade and their elderflower cordial is a wonderfully cool alternative to wine.

Duck Breast
with mint and chilli
Serves 2-3
T
he days might be cooling off but with this dish you can still add some sizzle to your evening meal; the heat of the chilli combined with the freshness of the mint creates an undeniably mouth-watering blend of flavours! Some people are wary of cooking duck, but this simple recipe makes it easier than ever to cook perfect duck every time, perfect for impressing at a dinner party, or just spicing up a midweek meal!
Ingredients 2 Duck Breasts 1 tbsp Chinese five-spice powder A splash of olive oil 1 tbsp dried thyme 2 tbsp fresh mint Juice of half a lemon 1 red chilli Salt and pepper
Get cooking: 1. Score each duck breast six to ten times. Season with salt and pepper and rub in the five-spice powder. Pour over a little olive oil and sprinkle on the thyme. 2. Place the duck breasts skin-side-down in a nonstick pan on a low to medium heat. Cook for six to eight minutes, or until the skin is golden brown and crispy, before pouring off any excess fat and flipping over the breast. Cook and seal the breast on this side for around 30 seconds before removing from the heat. 3.Turn the breast back onto the skin-side and place into the pre-heated oven for around six

Serving: 4. Once cooked, place on a chopping board to rest – allowing the cooking juices to run over the board. In the meantime, chop the mint, chilli and add the lemon juice and a splash of oil. Mix together with the duck and cooking juices on the board. 5. Slice the duck breasts, pouring over any remaining juices. Serve with a salad and some crusty bread to mop up the juices.

Pension Action in Norfolk A Norfolk campaign group is taking action against changes to the state pension age for women. Pension Action in Norfolk (PAIN), part of the national group Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI), is battling against the government’s decision to raise the state pension age for women to 66. Women’s state pension age has been rising since 2010, when it was 60 for women and 65 for men. This is due to a decision made by John Major’s government to gradually equalise pension ages between men and women between 2010 and 2020. In 2011, the coalition government made further changes to the pension age, accelerating the rises so that the pension age reached 66 for both men and women by 2020. Most women are not opposed to bringing their pension age in line with men; it’s the speed of the changes which causes concern. The changes in 2011 mean that some women will have to wait longer than they expected to claim their pension, and some argue that they have not had time to prepare financially. Others say that the changes made in the 90s were not properly communicated, meaning that women who planned to retire at 60 unexpectedly found that they had to keep working or eat into their savings. oung people heading off to college this year will be faced with soaring fees and having to learn to cope with debt, but unfortunately some could end up seriously out of pocket due to inadequate insurance. Take a look in the average student’s room and you’ll discover thousands of pounds worth of hi tech items, including laptops, tablets, TVs, digital cameras and smartphones. Insurance is one of the things often overlooked when students set off for campus, so here are a few pointers for those going to university for the first time. Essentially, there are three ways for students to get insurance: Existing family home insurance Before you fork out for any insurance, check your parents’ home contents insurance policy. More comprehensive standard home insurance policies include cover for family members when they’re away at university. Check the maximum limit for each individual item that’s covered, it’s normally around £1,500, but could be less.

University accommodation insurance Many universities offer cover for those students who are in halls and other types of accommodation owned by the university. Such cover can be good value as you don’t ‘pay’ extra for it, but is generally quite limited. Around 80 universities have this core cover, so it’s worth checking if yours is one of them. If you’re in a rented house, building insurance should be covered by your landlord, but make sure to confirm this before signing your contract. Getting your insurance in place is a great idea for students as not only does it protect your valuable possessions but it’s also one less thing to worry about, enabling you to fully concentrate on your studies.
There may also be caveats around specific items (like an expensive laptop) and certain circumstances (like communal areas), so make sure you check the policy wording carefully. If you want to take your bike to uni with you it’s worth remembering that it’s unlikely it will be covered under your parents’ home insurance policy. It should, however, be fairly simple and inexpensive to add this cover onto their existing policy. Alternatively, you can a get stand-alone policy to insure your bike, but this could work out to be more expensive. Stand-alone cover Specialist cover exists for students in the form of stand-alone policies which are deliberately designed to take into account student needs. This

The River Bure at Horstead and Coltishall We began our walk with a swim! The River Bure next to where we parked was clear, slow-flowing and alive with dancing demoiselles. A rather overgrown and wooded footpath follows the river bank southwards to Coltishall. A permissive path allowed a visit to the site of Horstead Mill. The path through Horstead churchyard then led us back to Mayton bridge along butterfly-filled hedges. Distance: approximately 4.4 miles. Using OS Explorer Map OL40. Start grid ref: TG 251 217. Nearest postcode NR12 7JX.

5 2 The footpath follows the river, dipping in and out of woodland. 3 Horstead Mill was the upper limit of navigation until 1775 when a lock was built at Coltishall and was once the biggest and most photographed mill in the county. It was in constant use until 1963 when it was gutted by fire.
1 A 17th-century, hump-backed bridge crosses a stream just south of the Bure, with an intriguing tiled shelter at either end – for a toll collector perhaps? 4 All Saints, Horstead is a flint-faced, red-tiled church dating from the early 14th century. It has one of north-east Norfolk’s finest collections of stained glass from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

We walked on a hot, late July day. Despite the stinging nettles, it was worth it for the butterflies we saw. Twelve species: Red admiral, Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell, Comma, Small skipper, Small white, Large white, Holly blue, Speckled wood, Gatekeeper, Meadow brown and Ringlet.
