Temecula’s Students of the Year honored TEMECULA—Eight Temecula high school seniors were honored as Students of the Year on May 20 by the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce at the Sizzler restaurant in Murrieta. The following students were recognized by their families, teachers, principals, the business community and locally elected officials. Linfield Christian High School – Amanda Leigh Principal Holly Wilson said Leigh made such a difference in the school’s community, cares so deeply, and thanked her for what she has done for Linfield the last four years. Wilson said Leigh was the junior ASB president, senior ASB president, yearbook editor, volleyball captain and took countless AP classes. Leigh said the people she shared moments with are what mattered to her and she can’t wait for the new experiences college will bring and looks forward to being a friend to someone who needs one. She plans on attending UCLA in the fall. Great Oak High School – Anthony Agbay Principal Marc Horton said “AJ” plays the piano, reached the semifinals in tennis, and was selected for an Abbott internship last summer and does all these amazing things with such a beautiful balance and humbleness. Horton said Agbay has left Great Oak High School a much better place than when he came. Agbay said he is honored he spent four years at Great Oak and has learned that achieving one’s goals is only the beginning for helping the community. He was involved in the science Olympiad, the IB program, was a tutor, volunteered at tennis camps and played tennis. He plans on attending Stanford in the fall for bio-engineering and hopes to continue his community service and outreach programs. Temecula Valley High School – Kaitlyn Jin Hee Kim Jin Hee Kim was unfortunately unable to attend the Student of the Year ceremony because she was out of state at her brother’s college graduation. Principal Allen Williams said she is a bright light on the Temecula Valley High School campus and has a very bright future ahead of her. Williams said Jin Hee Kim and another student led the National Honor Society ceremony and handled it so well. Williams

read a letter Jin Hee Kim wrote for the ceremony. In it, she said she was so honored and thankful to be named the Student of the Year for Temecula Valley High School. She quoted Winston Churchill who said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts,” and said the teachers at TVHS encouraged students to take chances. She plans on attending UCLA in the fall to study business economics. Rancho Vista High School – Stephanie Cashwell Principal Greg Cooke said Cashwell left the school in December 2014 because she graduated early and he misses seeing her pull up to school in her little red car. Cooke said she stood out in a positive, quiet and reserved way and said she is an artist, musician and singer. Cashwell said she lost her motivation and didn’t care about anything after a family member was diagnosed with depression. She went to Rancho Vista and said she had an epiphany there that an
education can help other people. She said she witnessed kids who had amazing stories and has started college already in hopes to someday help others. Rancho Christian High School – Amanda Ketcham Principal Dan Saatzer said Ketcham has attended Rancho Christian since preschool and has had such an amazing impact on the school. He said as a growing school, they need strong leaders and she was one of those leaders. He said she was ASB president, was involved in the robotics program and is a photographer, all the while bringing others along with her as she led them. Ketcham said her two passions are servant leadership and photography and tries to make it a priority to put others ahead of herself. She said her passion for photography is a gift she can give back to others. She plans on attending UC Santa Cruz in the fall where she plans to study business management and economics.
