10 years ago... A look back at what was happening in January and February 2005. New Year’s celebrations all over the UK fall silent for two minutes as a mark of respect for those who died in the tsunami. Time for tea! Tea is the world’s most popular drink, next to water—and it’s steeped in health benefits. Here’s what six top brews could do for you. Black Tea Black tea is the most common variety and accounts for about 75 percent of global tea consumption. It’s made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, which are typically rolled and fermented, then dried and crushed. It has a slightly bitter flavor and contains the most caffeine—about 40 milligrams per cup. Black tea has high concentrations of the antioxidant compounds known as theaflavins and thearubigins, which have been linked to lower levels of cholesterol. Green Tea Green tea has a more delicate flavor than black. The leaves are dried and heat-treated soon after they’re picked, which stops the fermentation process. It contains about 25 milligrams of caffeine per cup. Green tea is full of antioxidants called catechins. One study found that each daily cup of green tea consumed may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease by 10 percent. Oolong Tea Oolong is similar to black tea, but it’s fermented for a shorter time, which gives it a richer taste. It contains about 30 milligrams of caffeine per cup. It may aid in weight loss as it activates an enzyme responsible for dissolving triglycerides, the form of dietary fat that’s stored in fat cells. One study showed that women who drank oolong tea burned slightly more calories over a two-hour period than those who drank only water. White Tea These leaves are picked when they’re very young, so white tea has a much milder flavor than any other variety, not

to mention less caffeine—about 15 milligrams per cup. White tea is another health multitasker. It offers the same potential cardiovascular and cancer-fighting benefits as other teas and some research suggests that it may offer benefits to people with diabetes. An animal study found that consuming white tea resulted in improved glucose tolerance and a reduction in LDL cholesterol. Flavoured Tea In this category, aromatic extras, such as cinnamon, orange peel, and lavender, are paired with black, green, or white tea leaves. Flavored teas have the same levels of antioxidants and the same health benefits as unflavored ones. But skip the sweetened varieties in bottles, you’re better off without that extra sugar. Herbal Tea Technically, herbal teas are not teas at all—they’re usually some combination of dried fruits, flowers, and herbs. Herbal varieties contain no caffeine. Studies suggest that drinking three cups of hibiscus tea daily could help lower blood pressure in people with hypertension, chamomile tea may promote sleep and that peppermint tea may calm the stomach.

Creamy Tomato Soup 1 large onion, finely diced 1 Tbsp. fresh thyme, chopped 2 large cans chopped tomatoes 1 bay leaf 4 cups chicken or vegetable stock 1 cup cream 1 tsp. sugar Olive Oil Salt and black pepper In a large pan, sauté the onions in a small amount of olive oil over low heat until soft and fragrant, about 4-5 minutes. Add the thyme and cook one minute more. Add the tomatoes, bay leaf and the stock. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer. Simmer for 10-15 minutes or until all the flavours have mixed. Add the cream and season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the sugar if needed. Enjoy this soup chunky, or puree it to your preferred consistency using a blender. Be sure to remove the bay leaf before pureeing!

parkrun arrives in Daventry Runners in Daventry have a brand new challenge on their doorstep as parkrun arrives at Daventry Country Park. parkrun is a free, weekly 5km timed run which takes place every Saturday at 9am in hundreds of locations. People of all abilities and fitness levels are encouraged to have a go; from those taking their first steps in running to long service runners; from juniors to those with more experience; everybody is welcome!

2 Homemade Soup

Carrot & Coriander Soup 450g / 1lb of carrots sliced 1 large onion, roughly chopped 1 large bunch of fresh coriander, leaves roughly chopped and stalks removed 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1.2 litres / 2 pints vegetable stock 2 tablespoons of olive oil Salt and pepper to taste Heat up the olive oil in a frying pan to a medium heat. Add in the carrots and onion and fry for five minutes until the onions begin to soften. Turn the ingredients whilst cooking so that the oil coats all the vegetables and they are evenly cooked. Stir in the ground (not fresh) coriander and cook for one more minute. Transfer the contents of the frying pan into a large pan. Add the salt and pepper. Pour in the stock and bring the the mixture to a boil. Turn the heat down and simmer the soup for about 20 minutes until the carrots have softened. Liquidise the soup in a blender. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best if you leave some texture to the carrots rather then blending the soup to a puree. Taste the soup and add any more salt and pepper to taste. Add the chopped fresh coriander leaves and stir them in. Serve the soup with fresh crusty bread.

Pot Roasted Guinea Fowl with Wild Mushrooms, Bacon & Tarragon

Shopping List 1 Whole Guinea Fowl cut into 4 pieces 200g Mixed Wild Mushrooms, washed and chopped 100g Smoked Bacon Lardons 4 Shallots quartered and peeled 2 sprigs Tarragon, chopped 1 400g tin Chopped Tomatoes 500ml Chicken Stock 100ml White Wine 50g Chopped Flat Leaf Parsley 1 Tbsp Tomato Puree Salt and pepper Olive Oil Serves 2 Warm an ovenproof casserole dish on the hob, one with a tight fitting lid.

Brown the shallot and bacon in the dish, the fat will come out of the bacon so there is no need for oil. Once browned, add the pieces of Guinea Fowl skin side down and colour for five minutes until golden, then add the wine and reduce by half. Add the chicken stock, tomatoes and puree, cover with lid and put into the oven for an hour at 160Ë&#x161;C. For the garnish, fry the mushrooms in a splash of olive oil, add the tarragon and salt & pepper and then add to the pot and cook for a further 30 minutes. Finish with chopped parsley and check the seasoning. It is important to season after the sauce has reduced to prevent it being salty. Serve with creamy mash and winter greens. Delicious!

World Book Day ‘There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Despite competition from the railway, which arrived in Braunston in 1895, the twentieth century opened on a hopeful note for the canal industry but two world wars made it a turbulent century. Canal freight all but ceased, but leisure boating began, bringing yet further change to Braunston.

The meeting of track ways brought external influences from visitors and trade. Later, the coaching road between London and Chester became a turnpike road, increasing traffic and stimulating services for travellers and additional trade. At one time there were eight blacksmiths and several inns.

The Oxford Canal arrived in 1774 By 1850, due to the coming of the canal, the village had grown and become a busy and successful place. Occupations expanded considerably to include boatbuilders, brickmakers, ropemakers, coal merchants, boatmen and women, canal clerks, canal labourers, leggers, lock keepers and many more.

Centuries later when records first began Braunston was a self supporting, rural community. Most of the population worked as farmers, blacksmiths, graziers, shepherds and the like. There were also bakers, innkeepers, various shopkeepers and a host of cottage craftspeople to support the villagers.

We know very little about early Braunston In pre-historic times the flat plain of Warwickshire was a vast inland sea, known as Lake Harrison. The Braunston Ridge is made of a mudstone called Charmouth Mudstone. Just to the east are the classic Jurassic Limestones In this case it is iron rich giving it the distinctive Northamptonshire red colour. A narrow ridge of land jutted westwards from the Northamptonshire uplands towards the lower ground and it was on this commanding position that Braunston eventually grew up. Fresh water flowed from springs and from the Bragborough stream It would have been a good place for pre-historic people to live.

EVERDON

Walking is something for all the family, and on your doorstep in Northamptonshire is some of the most amazing scenery, backdrops, history and places to visit. And there is no better time to venture out after all the Christmas pudding and extra calories of the festivities. The village pub in Everdon, The Plough, welcomes walkers with dogs, and provides an ideal start and finish for walks throughout the year. Kim, Barry and Stephen open their doors from 11am and have on offer light lunches, along with the chance to sample a locally brewed ale or maybe just a cup of tea or coffee in a vintage cup and saucer. Whilst there you can even visit The Furrow, which is open daily, stocking an ever changing array of vintage and retro collectable items, from furniture to old photo albums.

Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an idea that could set you off on the road to stunning scenery and a visit to The Plough. Take a look at an Ordnance Survey map either on line https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/shop/ explorer-map-newport-pagnell-northamptonsouth.html or the printed Explorer Map number 207. You can achieve a super circular walk of about 1.5 miles taking in Little Everdon or go for longer walks through Everdon Stubbs, up to and past Mantles Heath and drop down to Snorscombe. Add a few more miles, and head over to Preston Capes before heading to Snorscombe.

Start at The Plough (see advert on following page) and follow pink walk via Little Everdon for around 1.5 miles to build up an appetite!

If you fancy something a little more strenuous then take the blue route through Everdon Stubbs and back via Snorscombe. A walk of around 4 miles.

Did you know? Everdon Stubbs is a deciduous woodland covering an area of approximately 100 acres (0.40 km2) and was once a famous hunting covert. The land now covered by the woods was originally grazing land for Wild Boar, through which Everdon gets its name (from Old English eoferdūn’boar hill’).

In the spring the area is covered with its famous carpet of bluebells, extremely well known throughout the county. Located at the centre of the village, Saint Mary’s church dates from the 14th century, and was built in the decorated style Some say that it was the churchyard of St Mary’s, and not St Giles of Stoke Poges, that was the inspiration for Thomas Gray’s famous elegy “In an English Churchyard”.

Easy Vegetable Soup 3 large carrots or 4-5 smaller ones 1 large parsnip or 2 smaller ones 1 small turnip The inside stalks of a celery including the leaves 1 medium leek 1 large onion 1 can of cannellini beans drained and rinsed 2 heaped tsps of tomato puree Parsley fresh or dried 1 Bayleaf 1 heaped tsp of corn flour dissolved in a tbsp of water 2 chicken or vegetable stock cubes Salt and white pepper to taste Chop all the vegetables and place in saucepan and cover with water. Bring to the boil and simmer until all the vegetables are soft. Add bayleaf, 2 stock cubes, parsley, salt and pepper, tomato puree, cannellini beans and simmer for a further 5 minutes Add the dissolved cornflour stirring all the time and bring back to the boil a couple of minutes

In Denmark traditions involve smashing plates. People throw broken plates on to friends’ doorsteps. This symbolises good wishes for the year ahead. Another tradition involves leaping from chairs on the strike of midnight. In Austria, New Years Eve is called Sylvesterabend which means Eve of Saint Sylvester. Suckling pig and peppermint ice cream are traditional food for New Year celebrations. Tables are often decorated with marzipan pigs, and good luck symbols made out of chocolate or marzipan in shapes such as chimney sweeps, coins, or horseshoes are exchanged.

New Year traditions from around the globe Amazing firework displays from around the world have become a familiar sight on New Year’s news programmes. Many countries also have traditional forms of celebration dating back hundreds of years. In the UK many people observe first-footing. This is traditionally done by a young, healthy, good looking male with dark hair. He carries gifts which include a piece of coal, money, bread and salt, and should be the first person through the front door after the New Year begins. This is believed to bring good luck. Auld Lang Syne is the familiar tune that many of us sing. This represents remembrance of old friends and times spent with them. Generally credited to Robert Burns, he actually said he was merely noting the words of an ‘old man’s singing.’ He set these words to the tune of a traditional Scottish ditty ‘Can Ye Labour Lea.’

Lead is considered to be auspicious in Germany so at New Year, they pour molten lead into cold water and see what shape develops. It is believed that this predicts the future, so: heart shapes symbolize marriage, round shapes denote good luck, and a ship means a journey. People also leave a bit of every food eaten on New Year’s Eve on their plate until after Midnight, as a way of ensuring a well-stocked larder. Carp is also included, as it is thought to bring wealth. Whereas in Brazil, lentils are seen as a symbol of wealth and prosperity and thus are traditionally part of a New Year’s meal. Other customs include priestesses of the local macumba voodoo cult, dressing up in blue and white for a ceremony dedicated to the god of water Yemanja. In addition, a sacrificial boat laden with jewellery, candles and flowers is pushed out from Ipenama beach in a bid to bring health, wealth and happiness. In Greece, 1st January is also St Basil’s Day. He is remembered for his kindness and generosity to the poor. Vassilopitta, or St Basil’s cake, is one of the special dishes that is prepared and contains a silver or gold coin. Whoever finds the coin will be lucky for the next year.

Canal Turn Farm Shop – a Hidden Treasure Celebrating their third anniversary are Dawn and Tim, the owners of Canal Turn Farm Shop, a fabulous little shop providing fresh meats, vegetables, pies and preserves amongst other delights. Tim, comes from a farming background, ( originally starting with 7 Wilshire horn sheep ) and has built the shop from scratch to include their own butchery and kitchen. This provides the space for Dawn to make all the pies from scratch using their own meat. All of their cattle are rare breed Dexter cattle and are hung for at least 21 days to produce beef that’s a little bit special. Keep Young at Heart... with Daventry & District Heart Support Group This support group brings a very important link in the Cardiac Rehabilitation program and operates a full and varied programme of wonderful activities available to anyone with a heart condition. You can even bring along partners, family members and friends. In fact anyone is welcome who supports the aims of The British Heart Foundation.

Mobile Safety Phone security is a serious issue Nowadays it’s probably more worrying if someone steals your phone than your purse because of the amount of data stored on it: bank, Facebook, Twitter, and Amazon accounts, are the tip of the iceberg. Your first line of defence is to make it hard for thieves to get into the phone. Make sure you’ve got your phone lock turned on so that they have to enter your password. If you’re using a pattern or pin code to unlock the phone make sure it’s not something simple like 1234 or a rectangle. SIM cards can be switched to another phone and used to run up bills of thousands of pounds. Notify your provider as soon as you realise your phone is missing. A delay may mean that you incur unnecessary charges. Although phone companies are being exhorted to cap the amount of liability a customer incurs if their phone is misused, at the time of writing this is not commonplace. Make sure your SIM is locked, as well as your handset, and check with your provider to see if you can voluntarily place a cap on your usage; that way, the phone will cut out once the limit is reached. Switch your location service on. Your phone will then be able to tell you where it is. Apple, Android and other major systems all have online phone location websites. You can locate and lock the phone, make it ring or even wipe it. Mobile phones, like laptops are open to hackers. In general phones are more secure from virus attacks, but you still need to be wary of criminals. Virus attacks on phones mostly occur via dodgy apps. Apple are very strict about what is allowed into iTunes so virus protection isn’t an issue. On Android devices

you need to be more careful. Read reviews carefully and check the permissions the app requests when you install it. If it’s a simple app asking for full access to your phone, it should ring alarm bells. If in doubt don’t install. Most of the major security companies produce Android apps to give you an extra level of security. Install one of these to give you extra peace of mind. Remember, when your phone connects to a Wi-Fi hotspot all the information it sends and receives passes through the computer controlling that hotspot. Always be aware of who owns the hotspot and how much you trust them. Most data, like bank logins and other major services, are highly encrypted so they can’t be stolen. However, other websites you use will not be as secure and may allow your login details to be hi-jacked. Check that the website or app you are using is secure (look for a little padlock icon) before you type in your details, especially card details. If in any doubt, don’t use it. Phone security is mostly about being aware of the problem and using common sense. If you follow the steps above, then even if you do lose your phone, it shouldn’t cause you any serious issues.

Early Nesters These days, in the face of climate change, we often hear of the impact that a rise in average global temperature has on our native wildlife. Studies by the British Trust for Ornithology indicate that many garden birds are beginning to nest a week earlier than they were fifty years ago. However, there are some bird species that have always been ‘early nesters’ and such activity can often be observed as early as January and February. The rook is a prime example. A member of the crow Corvus family; the rook is very much like a crow in appearance, but whilst the crow is somewhat solitary, the rook is a very social bird and nests communally. Rook nests are found grouped together (around 12- 30 nests) towards the very top of large trees and are often easily spotted due to the raucous presence of these birds. It is easy to see how the structure of these rookeries gave rise to the collective nouns for a group of rooks: a building, a parliament. Although it is the vocal nature of these birds that perhaps gave rise to my personal favourite: storytelling. Speaking of which, a colleague of mine reliably informs me that such birds will communally defend their nests by defecating on anyone that stands beneath their rookery. A pretty effective strategy against man, I expect! Rooks are at their most vocal during courtship, which is at this time of year. Indeed, as a keen naturalist from the 1940’s once noted “”rooks, in the

breeding season attempt sometimes, in the gaiety of their hearts, to sing, but with no great success”. Look out for the male strutting his stuff and bowing before his desired mate whilst spreading his wings and tail and emitting a loud ‘caw’. A rook will build its nest by snapping twigs off trees (or stealing them from other nests) and adding a bit of mud before lining it with wool, hair or a bit of grass. Typically, they will re-use their old nest but not before giving it a good spring-clean, and this can start as early as January. Old crow and rook nests are frequently re-used by birds of prey, such as kestrel or hobby. In fact, birds of prey are another group of ‘early nesters’, with many of them beginning to nest as early as February, and for good reason. If their chicks hatch before the vigour of spring growth kicks in, the adult birds can more readily see, hear and catch the small rodents on which they feed their young. So be on the lookout for the courtship sights and sounds of these ‘early nesters’ in January and February. In the meantime, why not do a little spring-cleaning yourself and clear out any old nesting material from your bird boxes to rid them of any parasites?
