Roast turkey with lemon & garlic Ingredients

5-6 kg oven-ready turkey, neck and giblets removed and kept for the gravy 1 onion, halved 1 lemon, halved (save the zest for the butter) whole bulb of garlic, halved For the salt mix 2 tbsp sea salt 1 tbsp thyme leaves 1 tsp peppercorns For the butter 100g butter 4 tbsp vegetable bouillon powder 1 lemon, zested

Method

SEASONED LOGS & CHIPPINGS DRY STORED FREE LOCAL DELIVERY Rugby . Daventry . Southam

Up to two days ahead, make the salt mix by grinding the salt with the thyme leaves. Sit the turkey in a roasting tin and gently push your fingers under the skin, starting from the neck, until you can push your whole hand in down the length of the breast. Take care not to tear the skin. Season the bird all over with the salt mix, inside and out and under the skin. Leave the turkey in the tin, breast-side up, and put in the fridge for up to two days – the longer you salt it, the more succulent the turkey will be. For the crispest skin, leave the turkey uncovered so it dries out, but loosely cover it if you prefer. Tip the butter, vegetable stock powder and lemon zest into a small bowl and mix until completely combined. Cover and chill. Can be made a few days ahead or frozen, wrapped in cling film, for one month. Remove the turkey from the fridge an hour or so before you want to cook it. Remove the butter from the fridge to soften. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Work out your cooking time based on 40 mins per kg for the first 4kg, plus 45 mins for every kg after that.

Use your hands to spread the butter under the skin so that it covers the entire breast area and work it into the crevice between the thigh and the main body, then smooth the skin over with your hands. Put the onion, lemon halves, and garlic in the cavity. Cover the tin loosely with foil and roast for the calculated cooking time. Around 30 mins before the end of cooking, increase the oven temperature to 200C/180C fan/gas 6, remove the foil, baste the turkey and return to the oven. When the turkey is beautifully brown and cooked through, remove from the oven and leave to rest on a warm platter covered with foil for up to 1 hr. Save the juices from the tin to make gravy.

Feature

Are you winter ready? With the dark nights upon us, thoughts are turning to winter. You may have stocked up on wood for the log burner and may have even bought a few early Christmas presents, but have you thought about how your window treatments could help to keep you warm and cosy this winter? We all know how to keep our bodies warm; we put on more layers. So why not apply that to our windows? The majority of homes, old and new, now have double glazing which is a great way to prevent heat loss. However, a bare window still feels cold to the touch and will allow a lot of preventable energy transfer into the cold outdoors. So how can we make our window treatments as energy efficIent as possible?

Curtains

There are several ways to upgrade the simple curtain to improve heat retention: Thermal lining - a thermal blackout lining will not only keep heat in during the winter but also keep heat out during the summer. Blackout linings are usually white or cream and also protect fabric and furniture from harmful UV rays. Interlining - an additional blanket-like layer sandwiched between the curtain fabric and lining, interlining also adds body and softness to curtains for a luxurious look and feel. Fabric weight - for the most chilly of homes, a heavier weight curtain fabric such as a velvet can also help. Combine this with a lightweight interlining and thermal blackout lining for maximum effect.

18

Puddling and pelmets - to truly cocoon the coldest of windows, add a pelmet to the top of the curtain and puddle the fabric on to the floor. This works particularly well in period homes and bay windows. Watch the radiator! - if the radiator is below the window don’t cover it with full length curtains. Curtains should finish just above the radiator to prevent heat loss. If you love long curtains, a thermal-lined roman blind in the recess will keep the room cosy.

Shutters

Shutters - either in faux or real wood - can help to control heat flow within a room. In comparison to other blinds such as Venetians, shutters encase the window, allowing only the slightest amount of air flow when closed. Tests on faux wood shutters showed a difference of 3oc between a room with shutters closed compared to shutters open.

Duette blinds

Perfect for conservatories, bi-fold doors and roof windows due to their lightweight nature, Duette blinds give a sleek, modern look. Their unique cell-in-cell or honeycomb design keeps warmth in the room, reducing heating costs by up to 46% So there are 3 ideas of how to insulate your home this winter. And what’s more, they are better for the pocket and the planet too! By Kate James About Kate James With over 20 year’s design experience, Kate specialises in interiors and window treatments. Kate is co-owner of Curtains by Design in Rugby.

Best foot forward

Best foot forward - Hellidon pub circular walk Northamptonshire offers a surprising variety of landscapes from the rolling hills in the north, to the scenic vistas and amazing woodlands in the south. If you add the Grand Union Canal with its many towpaths, quaint little villages that are secreted in history it is no wonder that they call this county the “Hidden Cotswolds”. HELLIDON PUB CIRCULAR WALK Distance: 4.3 miles / 9.5k steps Duration: Approx 1.5 hours Difficulty: Easy to moderate Dog friendly Download this walk, complete with turn by turn photos at: http://www.adventuregeek.co.uk/ag12 Hellidon & Catesby are both lovely villages riddled with quaint cottages, a church, an old post office and a lost vineyard. Sitting in the Red Lion Pub front garden you will see a white rounded building on the hill in the distance. Windmill vineyard is no longer in operation, but in years gone by a shop was on the ground floor of this splendid converted windmill which was originally built in the 18th Century. It was converted into a dwelling in 1978. We hope you enjoy this walk. There is a real mix of terrain, views, a mini-workout, fauna, wildlife, history and you may encounter a few cows along the way. Make sure that you have plenty of water with you as we guarantee that you will want a drink after a long climb up towards Catesby. THE ROUTE: Starting at The Red Lion Pub, Stockwell Lane, Hellidon, exit the car park and turn right. You will continue along Stockwell Lane for a while. Take time to admire the fabulous window boxes, and gorgeous thatched cottages that are along this route. As you take the bend to your

right you will pass a red telephone box on the right and you can spot the church on the hill to your left (up the steps). You are now heading out of the village and shortly you will spot a well / cast iron pump to your right. Continue on the path until you reach a fork in the road, take the right fork into Catesby Lane. The walk will lead you along a track for approximately one mile. You are in for a treat as the views are amazing and within half an hour the fantastic Clock Tower bed & Breakfast will appear to your left. Did you know? The delightful Clock Tower building comprises part of a stable-yard built in the 1850’s. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead, whilst looking for the footpath sign on your right. Take a moment to admire the way in which the trees have been planted here and you are transported right back to Downtown Abbey days! Turn left at the end of the field following the signs for the Luxury Dog Hotel, although you will be turning off onto another footpath before you reach this unusual place. Once you have walked along the well maintained lush green footpath, admiring the ponds to your left and your right, brace yourself for a workout! The path is just about to get interesting as you follow the roller coaster path, while dodging the badger holes and climbing uphill. I urge you to stop at least once on this climb as the views behind you are spectacular. You have now entered the quaint village of Catesby. At the T—Junction, turn left then take care when crossing the

Tips for a greener, more thoughtful Christmas Buy local

Spending money with a small business keeps more money in your local economy. Research by local authorities in the UK has shown that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business, 63p stays in the local economy. This compares to 40p in every £1 spent with larger businesses.

Buy fresh

Why not try a Farmers Market or local farm shop rather than the supermarket this year? You’ll be buying direct from the producer and you can be assured that you’ll know exactly where your food has come from. Plus the added bonus is you’ll reduce food miles and get better quality, better tasting food.

Buy less

go overboard with a fabulous gift for the person whose name they chose. Your gift list for the adults in your family has just been shortened to one. You can now focus on a special gift for the person whose name you picked, without the difficulty and expense of finding just the right gift for everyone.

Look for locally made gifts

Many gifts in today’s marketplace come from halfway around the world, and the impact of transportation contributes significantly to greenhouse emissions and global warming. Local craft fairs and artisan shops are a good source for gifts that come without the added costs of transportation. Gifts made locally often have a story which goes with the gift, since the maker and the origin of the gift are known.

Some gifts fill a practical need and need to be bought new. But many gifts are really gestures of thoughtfulness. You can give more while spending less by giving a little thought to what the recipient would really appreciate. So be organised, buy when you see the perfect gift and avoid last-minute gifts.

Choose gifts made from recycled sources

Simplify your gift list

About 40% of all battery sales occur during the holiday season. Discarded batteries are an environmental hazard. Even rechargeable batteries find their way into the waste stream eventually.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by a gift list that’s just too long, then why not try a ‘Secret Santa for all the adults in your family? Put all the names in a hat and choose one each. Agree a spending limit so no-one feels they have to

Lots of small businesses have developed great products using recycled materials. Supporting these businesses helps reduce the waste stream while promoting the concept of making best use of available materials.

Give ‘battery-free’ gifts

Time to say ‘thank you’! Back in 1990, a group called Common Ground initiated ‘Tree Dressing Day’, to take place during the first weekend in December. It was a chance for a whole community to gather and strengthen their relationship with trees. An opportunity to celebrate old customs of tying natural yarns and coloured cloth in the branches and around the trunk of a tree to offer protection and say ‘thank you’ to a tree. This celebration still takes place across UK with many thousands of people taking part in a neighbourhood activity every year. Contact www. commonground.org.uk to find out if something is happening near you. If you think about it - we all like tree dressing – a Christmas Tree! Why not ring the changes this year and decorate your tree with natural objects found in your garden, the hedgerows and woods or use dried flowers this year – keep those artificial baubles and trinkets in the box this year – you might find you like the natural version even better – let me know! But are real Christmas trees better for the environment? The thought of saving one from being cut down might prompt you to buy an artificial tree that you can use year after year – but the big downside to this is that they are made of PLASTIC. The end-to-end production of a plastic tree creates double the carbon footprint of a real tree that ends up in landfill; from the extraction of the oil from which it is made to the emissions produced when the tree is shipped long distance (mainly from China). However, most local authorities now offer a shredding service and then use the shredded chips as mulch in parks and gardens – a truly sustainable way of recycling your real tree.

Around the world environmental activists are campaigning to urge world leaders to take immediate action to reduce global warming. Campaigners, Greta Thunberg and George Monbiot, have helped produce a short video ‘Natural Climate Solutions’ in which a tree is referred to as ‘…a magic machine that sucks carbon out of the air, costs very little and builds itself.’ A single tree can remove 1 tonne of carbon from the air over 40 years. We can all help save our planet immediately by planting more trees! So, at this time of year when we are thinking about buying Christmas gifts for our family and friends, what better present than a tree! Try contacting www. woodlandtrust.org.uk, , www.nationalforest.org, www. natonaltrust.org.uk (woodland appeal). All of these offer the opportunity to have a certificate of planting to be sent to the recipient. You might even think about getting your family involved with a tree planting day in your area as a great day out in the fresh air during the Christmas period. If none of these appeals, you could always resort to a spot of tree hugging when you are out walking – but don’t forget to say thank you! Have fun! Call Darren on 01788 891057 for quotes and advice.

Method Place the flour in a clean plastic bag. Shake a few pieces of meat in the bag until lightly dusted. Repeat until all the pieces of meat are coated. Heat 2tbsp of the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Cook the beef in batches, adding a little extra oil if needed, until browned. Be careful not to overcrowd the frying pan, as the meat will then steam rather than sear. Transfer to a large casserole dish or lidded saucepan. Fry the onions (adding a little extra oil if needed), over a low heat until tender. Add the onions, paprika, bay leaf and allspice to the casserole and cook, stirring for 2-3 minutes. Pour in the stock (or 500ml water and 1 stock cube) and bring to the boil. Cover the pan and simmer gently over a low heat for about 1 hour, or until the meat is tender. Mix the cornflour with 50ml cold water and add the tomato purée, plus a dash or two of tabasco sauce, to the goulash. Bring back to the boil and simmer gently for about 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped parsley and accompany with sour cream to serve.

Christmas Gift Guide

The Village Emporium Christmas Gift Guide No matter how advanced technology gets, the pleasure of going to town to shop can never be replaced by online shopping. High street shopping gives people the benefit of venturing out and finding a break from their daily lives. It allows you to touch and feel the goods and shopping at a small local businesses often means you benefit from the knowledge and passion of the retailer. Going out to the shops can make a pleasant change and it’s always a good idea to move away from those devices for a while. Not all stores, brands and companies sell their products online and for certain things, one has to go for the option of high street shopping. Almost everything that sells online also sells in the on the high street and whatever we buy ina local shop comes home with us and is ready to use. The same is not true for online shopping since products may take time to reach us. So why not try venturing out to the high street this year and indulging in a little, good old-fashioned Christmas shopping?

Change in business can be good If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got – sound familiar? Many people have laid claim to this quote including Anthony Robbins and before him Albert Einstein, Henry Ford, and even Mark Twain. Regardless, what matters is the point it makes. If you want to change the end result, you need to change the way you do things. Think of this in the context of setting goals or achieving success. If you do not set goals for yourself, your work or business, you probably meander through life believing the outcomes of your actions are your destiny. For some they achieve success and have no regrets. More often than not, people look back and wish they had made a different decision.

Embrace change

Businesses frequently fail to embrace a culture of change and innovation. Learning and implementing something new can be challenging and may take longer than the “old” way, but if implemented for the right reasons with a clear plan and good supports, any hurdles can be overcome. Conversely they also often do things because they feel they should without stopping to really think about what works for them. For example you may have been using social media and online marketing to promote your business because you feel that that’s the thing to do in a digital age? Is it working for you? If not, why not stop and change what you are doing. Consider putting some print back into your marketing mix. Print marketing is tried and tested. We know what to expect - it’s authentic and trustworthy. But print marketing also faces accusations of being outdated and

50

expensive. By contrast, digital is fast, accurate and costeffective. But it’s also impersonal, less memorable and intangible; you don’t want your campaign to get lost in the digital clutter of today’s online world. In most cases, it really depends on your businees and your audience. You’ll need different campaigns for different products, and different forms of media will be more effective at targeting different audiences.

Print can build more meaningful connections

The tactile quality of print is proven to give a lasting form of emotional connection, a personal feel which gives printed media an inimitable trustworthiness. Recent studies have shown that potential customers are far more likely to trust your company when your marketing is presented via high-quality print, such as magazines. Gaining trust is a crucial part of any business. Moreover, printed materials can be kept. If you design a good product, your audience may well keep a hard copy, which they can engage with over and over again. Print marketing gives businesses a much higher level of impact than digital marketing can achieve, building more meaningful and long-lasting connections with consumers. So embrace change, set your goals, take the time to plan, welcome feedback and adjust your plan when necessary as you move forward and enjoy your success!

What have you got to lose? Other than the old way, which did not work anyway!

Seasonal recipe

Roast pumpkin and swiss chard risotto Ingredients 600g pumpkin 4 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp maple syrup 1 pinch cinnamon powder 50g flaked almonds, finely chopped 225g leeks, trimmed and finely chopped 250g arborio rice 100ml vegetarian dry white wine 1 litre vegetable stock 150g swiss chard 1½ tbsp single cream Total time required 45 mins Preparation time: 15 mins Cooking time: 30 mins

Method Cut the pumpkin into quarters, peel and de-seed. Then cut into thick slices/segments (approx 12-15cm) and place in a roasting pan. Mix together 2 tbsp oil, maple syrup and cinnamon and drizzle over the pumpkin. Roast for 25-30 minutes until tender, take out of the oven and cut into large dice. In a small frying pan heat 1 tsp oil and lightly toast the almonds until golden. Set aside. Heat the remaining oil in a large frying pan and sauté the leek until soft. Add the rice and stir until the grains are

56

well coated and slightly golden. Pour in the wine and stir until it is absorbed. Add one ladle of hot stock and simmer until absorbed. Repeat. After 10 minutes add the chard and let wilt. Continue to add stock at intervals and cook until absorbed into the rice (you may not need all the stock). Season well with salt and pepper. Once rice is tender but still very slightly al dente, add the cream and cook for a further minute before adding the pumpkin. Remove from heat, cover and rest for 2 minutes. When ready to serve sprinkle over the roasted almonds and a squeeze of lemon juice Serve the soup in bowls and garnish each portion with a poached egg, a scattering of croûtons and herbs, and a drizzle of the remaining rapeseed oil.

Christmas nineteen fashion edit Present yourself in some of the best looks this Christmas time.

Glamour

Go for glamour, extra helpings of glam with high shine fabrics such as silk, satin, sequined and glittered surfaces. It is a season of accents of metallics in any case so embrace the shine! It is Christmas after all. Though it is party season sequins and sparkle can be incorporated in a parred down way with casual separates into your daily wardrobe.

Statement coat

Envelope yourself in some fabulous outerwear. Our store has been filled with some amazing jackets and coats in various styles. The faux fur coats that you instantly fall for are so comfortable and lightweight to wear but look movie star gorgeous, just wonderful for when you are out and about at this time of year.

Dresses

A seasonal must- have is the dress, we’ve massively seen the revisit of the Seventies Bohemian long sleeved maxi or midi dress in an assortment of print usually a ditsy floral. Combine with a belt and a pair of stomper or cowboy boots. Layer with a jersey l/sleeved tee and tights for when you feel that sharp winter temperature. Knits over-layered and open look very on point too. If you are not a print person then colour blocking is also a key trend. Pick a perky colour to add amongst core colours (black/grey). Give this look an extra boost of luxe with some beautiful jewellery such as a layering of gold chains or hoop earrings, celebrate the style!

Knits

Add knits underneath a blazer or over a printed shirt. Wrap a belt around one to cinch in. Definately don’t feel nervous about wearing a Fairisle patterned jumper with a printed skirt.

Heritage blazer

If you are a fan of classic clothes then this one is for you. As seen styled in many ways. The polo neck makes for a natural pairing or you could try a sexier layer such as a lace tee or a cami. Some of the major Fashion influencers have been wearing the cami under the checks and then multi layered with very fine gold chains or a solitary necklace for the trad-modern look. Raising the game for when you are going out-out this season. Complete with jeans or other woven trousers. That’s my style inspo for the time of year outlining some of the major trends . Enjoy your clothes! Enjoy the festivities! Wishing you a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year as we enter a new decade!! From all of us at Terracotta Xx

What better for that ‘hygge’ mood at Christmas time. Knits in Argyle, Fairisle. The fringed and fluffy. Motifs, Stripes!

58

In store we have some amazing afore mentioned woolens . Don’t just stop at jeans when you think of wearing knitwear. Team the Argyle knit with our pleated, assymetrically hemmed skirt then add some stompy boots.

Small Business Saturday – 7th December Small Business Saturday launched in the UK in 2013. It falls on one of the busiest shopping days each year, the first Saturday of December. It’s designed to encourage customers to spend their money in independent, local businesses rather than big high street chains. Small Business Saturday UK is a not-for-profit, grassroots campaign, which exists to support, inspire and promote small business. The campaign encourages businesses to promote themselves and work with other small businesses, and consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small, independent businesses in their communities.

100 have not only received exposure on Small Business Saturday’s social media channels and in the local and national press, but also joined the Small Business Saturday team in London at receptions in Downing Street, House of Lords and the Treasury Drum with the Chancellor of the Exchequer

Take part in the Small Business bus tour if it comes to your area.

In 2016, research after the day suggested that consumers spent £717m with small businesses on Small Business Saturday, an increase of 15% on 2015 spending. Small Business Saturday 2017 was the most successful campaign yet with an estimated £748 million spent on the day.

Add your business to the ‘Small Business Finder’ to help promote your firm.

Attend one of the talks or seminars on helping start ups and small businesses.

Write to your MP to ask them to support Small Business Saturday.

Show customers and passing trade your locally, sourced products.

Say thank you to customers for their support with Small Business Saturday merchandise.

Engage with the Small Business Saturday campaign on social media using the hashtag #SmallBizSatUK. Share posts and pictures of what you’re doing to get involved in the campaign.

Small Biz 100

Each year in the UK, small independent businesses are encouraged to apply for the #SmallBiz100, where 100 small businesses are chosen and one is celebrated every day in the run up to Small Business Saturday, which takes place in December each year. It’s a great opportunity to showcase your small business and raise awareness both locally and nationally. On your allocated day, your business will be celebrated across Small Business Saturday’s social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn, making it a fantastic way to make a big impact. Outside of your allocated day, there are plenty of PR opportunities within the media. Local press love to get involved and feature local businesses which have been selected to join SmallBiz100, and Small Business Saturday will support you all the way by preparing press releases for your local papers. Whisk the chickpea liquid with an electric hand whisk to form a meringue mixture with soft peaks. Add the sugar in increments, whisking in between each addition. Spoon the mixture onto two tins lined with baking parchment and bake in the over for approximately 150 minutes. Skim the cream from the top of the tins of coconut milk and whisk with the vanilla extract and a little of the clear liquid left in the tin until it resembles whipped cream. Layer the meringue and coconut cream with the berries before decorating with the remaining berries to serve.

Apple, cranberry and cinnamon scones A delicious way to use up leftover cranberry sauce! Ingredients 375g Self-raising flour 65g Unsalted butter, diced and fridge cold 65g Caster sugar ½ Braeburn apple, grated 1 tbsp Cranberry sauce 150ml Milk Squeeze of lemon juice

Method The first thing you need to do is to sour the milk with the lemon juice, the reason we are souring the milk is to help the chemical reaction with the baking powder that is in the flour giving you a much better lift thus giving you a lighter scone. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. Grate the ½ apple including the skin. Sift the flour and the cinnamon together into a large bowl. Carefully rub in the cold diced butter. Add the sugar and the grated apple. Next add your cranberry sauce. Add the soured milk to the mixture and knead lightly. Tip out onto a floured surface and roll to a thickness of 4 to 5 cm. Use a crinkled cutter and cut your scones to the size you require, put on a non-stick baking sheet (I find that if you bunch them relatively close together I get a better lift) brush with milk and cook for about 10 to 16 minutes depending on size.

Enabling time-poor consumers to make great shopping choices In our monthly look at the work of Red Tractor Assurance, we speak to CEO Jim Moseley about the relevance of farm assurance to shoppers. If busy parents had to list chores they least enjoy, going to the supermarket or placing an online food order for the week would rank quite high for most. Our daily lives are fraught; the school run, work, hobbies, socialising – not to mention the endless life admin that consumes precious hours of downtime. Fitting in a food shop, possibly with children in tow, is not how many would choose to unwind. The key fundamentals of the grocery shop are universal across time and geographies. Shoppers want to feel confident in the safety and legitimacy of the food they buy, have access to choice with good availability and convenience. Then there is the cost. In relative terms, the British grocery shop remains one of the cheapest in the world. Food consumed in the UK is the cheapest in Western Europe costing 8% less than the EU average, according to EU statistical body Eurostat. Yet the Office of National Statistics tells us the average UK family of four has just £60 a week to feed their loved ones. That’s precious little to enable the millions of shoppers across the country who want to buy local and support British farmers and producers, or to source the high-end artisanal products they might choose if money was no object. A middle ground is essential; products which are still farmed with extreme care and are safe to eat,

72

but affordable for all. Jim Moseley, CEO of Red Tractor Assurance, has sympathy for consumers who face a mind-boggling array of well-marketed products designed to reassure shoppers that they are making choices that satisfy their consciences. But he is also keen to emphasise that Red Tractor is a simple signpost for shoppers looking for a castiron guarantee that a product can be traced back to the farm it was produced on, is safe to eat and has been farmed carefully. A huge number of shoppers already know that the Red Tractor logo is the point of navigation for quality food from British farms. The assurance scheme’s research shows that two-thirds of Brits think the logo positively influences their purchase decision. That’s been helped by a huge advertising push over the past year. Red Tractor’s first ever television advert went out in September 2018 at a cost of £1.5m, and was repeated earlier this year. Now, a new £1m ‘Britain’s Biggest Farmers Market’ campaign is being aired to show how Red Tractor uniquely brings together some of the best farmers, producers, retailers and food service operators from across the country to deliver great quality British food, produced to its high standards. Look out for the advert on prime-time TV and digital channels during flagship shows like Emmerdale and Gogglebox, or look it up on Facebook.

Bill and Milly

have always been together.

They still are. At Anya Court, industry-leading residential, nursing and dementia care are just the beginning. We really get to know residents too – it’s how we support them to enjoy all the little things that make a big difference to their day. Just being together means everything to Bill and Milly. They’ve been married for 60 years and are still an inseparable couple at Anya Court, doing all the things they used to do at home, despite their different care needs. To see for yourself what makes Anya Court a care home with a difference, go to hallmarkcarehomes.co.uk, or call our Customer Relationship Manager, Karen on 01788 811976, or drop by for a visit at 286 Dunchurch Road, Rugby, Warwickshire, CV22 6JA.

Remembrance Sunday “At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them

In Flanders Fields By John McCrae

Remembrance Sunday Every year, the British Legion calls on the nation to unite in commemorating Remembrance Sunday. On Sunday 10 November 2019, the National Service of Remembrance will be held at the Cenotaph on Whitehall, London. Starting at 11am, the service will commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women involved in the two World Wars and later conflicts.

Remember and honour Every year the nation unites to make sure that no-one is forgotten and to remember and honour those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom. Numerous cities across the country dedicate a day to distributing poppies and getting the public involved through activities and entertainment. This year, Poppy Days are taking place in London, Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham. There are lots of ways to get involved on the British Legion website : www.britishlegion.org.uk

74

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Ask Sheaf Street Health Store

Support for busy lifestyles Continuing our series from Sheaf Street Health Store, we explore ‘Energy and fatigue’. This article does not seek to diagnose or treat; if you are suffering from any health condition or are currently taking prescribed medication, please consult your GP before considering any complementary therapies. Q: I feel tired all the time. Can you suggest anything? A: Exhaustion or feeling tired all the time are indicators that the body needs support and rest. Assess your daily food intake, do you need to boost your diet with extra veggies, fruit, lean proteins and healthy fats? These will help lift energy levels and clear any mental fog. If you are following a restricted diet such as vegetarian or vegan regimen, check whether you are getting enough iron, iodine and vitamin B12 daily - it may be necessary to have tests with your GP, or simply take a supplement. If stress is an issue, make time for some self-care, whether that’s a relaxing bath, a regular yoga class, or a night unwinding with friends. Nutrients that are essential to the body’s energy cycle include Magnesium and B vitamins, while other supplements such as D-Ribose, Co-enzyme Q10, Maca or Rhodiola are also available. Finally, avoid energy-drainers such as too much sugar, too much caffeine, too little sleep and excessive stress.

Visit Sheaf Street Health Store, 20 Sheaf Street, in Daventry, for a one-to-one chat, and more information.

Recommended Reads by Shaun Higgs: ‘How to Own Your Life’ by Jean-Pierre De Villiers Shaun’s top book recommendation this month is ‘How to Own Your Life’ by international author and Daventry resident, Jean-Pierre De Villiers – known by friends as ‘JP’. JP is a legend, Ironman and global inspirational speaker, he has truly overcome life’s challenges, only recently suffering and recovering from a major traffic accident. Those who are new to (or want to refresh) a personal development journey will enjoy this quick read. It’s a love letter to your inner child, reminding the reader to take responsibility for the here-and-now and posing the question “What if?” to encourage selfexamination and the drive to progress. As JP repeats through the book – “I don’t care what you think about me, I care about what you think about yourself.” Highly recommended and a perfect Christmas gift to yourself or a friend.
