More powerful and faster than any RS 6 and RS 7 to date: the new Audi RS 6 Avant performance and RS 7 Sportback performance was introduced to South Africans last week at the Audi driving experience hosted at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit. Bursting with equipment that sharpen the models’ appearance and make for a more emotive driving experience, the new performance derivatives boast a potent 4.0-litre V8 biturbo TFSI engine that now produces 463 kW of power and maximum torque of 850 Nm.

At Audi, ‘performance’ means more power. Larger turbochargers and an increase in boost pressure from 2.4 to 2.6 bar in the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo TFSI engine free an additional 22 kW in power and 50 Nm more torque. The performance models sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than the nonperformance RS 6/RS 7 versions.

Driving dynamics

Power from the 4.0 TFSI engine flows through an eightspeed tiptronic transmission with faster shifting times to the permanent all-wheel drive quattro setup. The strictly mechanical centre differential distributes engine power to the rear axle at a ratio of 40:60 and, if slippage occurs, more drive torque is applied to the axle with better traction – up to 70 percent can flow to the front axle and 85 percent to the rear axle.

High-performance tyres

The new RS 6 Avant performance and RS 7 Sportback performance leave the production line on standard 22-inch matte titanium grey, diamond turned wheels, which are also available in burnished glossy metallic black, matte black, or matte neodymium gold. Inspired by motorsport, the airy 5-Y spoke design aids brake cooling and the lighter rims are manufactured in a hightech forging-milling process.

The Audi drive select dynamic handling system lets the driver control the vehicle’s character. Six profiles are available: efficiency, comfort, auto and dynamic, as well as two customisable RS-specific RS1 and RS2 modes. Experience of the driving modes in the performance models is much more unique than before.

Additionally, fine-tuning to the engine control unit software makes for tighter load changes in S mode when the “dynamic” drive select mode or driving mode S is active, further increasing the emotionality. The updated software in the transmission control unit makes for faster shifting times and a noticeably increased spread between the various driving modes.

A matte carbon/black styling package is also an option.

Fresh exterior

The new RS 6 Avant performance and RS 7 Sportback performance are available in a total of 16 exterior colours, and, for the first time, metallic and matte Ascari Blue and matte Dew Silver are included. The performance models stand out with standard RS exterior components in matte grey, including the exterior mirrors, the front spoiler, the front side flaps, the side sill inserts, the roof rails, and the trim on the side windows and rear diffuser.

New interior

In the interior, the familiar RS design packages in grey and red have been expanded to include blue. The steering wheel rim in Alcantra black features contrasting stitching in Mercato blue, whilst the floor mats, the side of the centre console, and the selector lever cuff also come with blue contrast stitching. Another distinguishing feature is an entrance LED in the front doors that projects the lettering “RS performance” onto the ground next to the car. Customers can order RS design packages in the three available colour variants.

It is often true that great wines are produced under tough conditions created by Mother Nature, and which must be dealt with by the whole winemaking team – from the vineyard workers, viticulturists to the winemaker and his team in the cellar.

A perfect example of this is Perdeberg’s award-winning Dry Land Collection of ultra-premium wines, which brings this truth to life.

Made from grapes cultivated in vineyards that receive little to no irrigation, also known as ‘dryland’ vineyards, the collection showcases the uniqueness of wines grown in this terroir using age-old traditions. “We want to create wines that are true to this environment,” explains Perdeberg cellarmaster Albertus Louw. “We want to allow the wine to express where it comes from.”

The Roussouw’s Heritage 2019 white blend reflects the power of diversity.

Expanding on the Paarl cellar’s 80-year history of winemaking excellence, the Dry Land Collection selects grapes from older vines and bush vines, planted in the best soils where they would be sustainable with seasonal rainfall as the main water source.

“We try to do things as naturally as possible, with the least intervention,” explains Louw. The variation of weather, soil, drainage, and altitude from vineyard to vineyard enables Perdeberg to produce a wide range of wines with distinct qualities and character.

Without irrigation, dry land crops weigh less, with smaller bunches and smaller berries that need to be picked by hand. There is sweet reward for enduring these tough conditions, however: “Most of the flavour is just under the skin, so with less juice and more skin, you get higher flavour concentration,” says Louw.

Each wine in the range holds a symbolic name that shares a characteristic of its source. The labels of Courageous Old Vine Barrel Fermented Chenin, Resolve Pinotage, Tenacious Shiraz, Conqueror Cabernet Sauvignon and Longevity Natural Sweet Chenin are testament to the endurance of these vineyards. Paying tribute to the masters who have contributed to Perdeberg’s wine-making history, the collection is completed by Roussouw’s Heritage white blend, named after Perdeberg Cellar founder Jan Roussouw, and Joseph’s Legacy red blend, after Joseph Huskisson, Perdeberg’s first full-time winemaker who pioneered new technologies in SA winemaking in the 1950s. The Courageous Old Vine Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2021 showcases aromas of citrus, pear, peach, and pineapple. The palate boasts hints of citrus, litchi, and vanilla, while the finish is crisp with a well-defined acidity.

It’s a known fact that Pinotage vineyards flourish under dryland conditions, and the Resolve Pinotage 2019 is no exception. In fact, it’s the perfect example of what a Pinotage should be. The dark colour, explicit aromatics and juicy structure of this wine is a testament to this traditional way of grape farming.

The Tenacious Shiraz 2018 is a fine example of wine made under dryland conditions. The nose is spicy with nuances of white pepper, cloves, fresh tobacco, and violets. On the palate you get tones of mulberries, cherries, and fynbos, while the structure is broad with delicate tannins and a fresh aftermath.

The Conqueror Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is a true reflection of a modern-day Cab, showing typical cultivar characteristics with perfumed aromas. On the nose you’ll find hints of prune, blackberry, blueberry, and vanilla, while the palate is structured with soft tannins that end in a long finish.

The Longevity Natural Sweet Chenin Blanc 2018 is an exceptional example of the diversity of Chenin Blanc.

With its appealing deep gold colour, enticing aromas and vibrant mouthfeel, this wine is made to please all the wine senses.

The Roussouw’s Heritage 2019 white blend reflects the power of diversity shouldering up together to create something beautiful. Fragrant citrus, passion fruit, litchi and white pear is evident on the nose.

Completing the range is the Joseph’s Legacy 2019 red blend which delivers prominent black pepper, cedar, biltong spice, cherry, plum and vanilla notes on the nose. The palate is structured and bold with layered tones of cloves, spice, coriander, and chocolate icing.

minerals. Vitamins: Potatoes are a good source of vitamin C, with one medium potato providing about 45% of the recommended daily value. They also contain smaller amounts of other vitamins, including vitamin B6, niacin, and pantothenic acid. Seen by many people as a comfort food, mainly because there are truly endless ways to enjoy them. Roasted, as mash or hash, as browns, taters and of course our own fries or in South African – chips. They are also great as a midnight snack and of course in various forms of salads.

Air Fryer Crispy Potatoes

Using an air fryer, with just a little bit of oil, potatoes get perfectly crispy on the outside while staying perfectly soft on the inside. Using an air fryer results in crispy potatoes in half the time with no waiting for the oven to preheat and cooked through in around 10 minutesbefore loadshedding strikes again. Plus, the air fryer requires less oil than typical roasting while still giving an ultra-crispy, golden outside. Toss in your favourite seasonings, and in no time, you’ll have perfectly crisp potatoes ready to be served with every meal. Here’s how: Baby potatoes are a favourite for the air fryer—really any variety will work. There is no need to boil them as the air fryer will do all the, keeping them soft and cooked-through on the inside. Tips: Cook in batches. If you’re doubling the recipe, make sure to cook in batches. You want your potatoes to be in a single layer when cooking for maximum crispiness. Stir & shake. To make sure your potatoes cook evenly, make sure to shake and stir your potatoes in the basket at least once while cooking.

Variations

Coat baby potatoes a mix of savoury seasonings before topping them with fresh herbs or customise according to your tastes. Keep it simple with garlic powder, salt, and pepper, or switch it up by adding your favourite seasonings—Cajun, herbs de Provence, even Parmesan, to make them completely your own.

Ingredients

• 1 kg baby potatoes, halved

• 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

• 1 tsp garlic powder

• 1 tsp Italian seasoning

• 1 tsp Cajun seasoning (optional)

• Kosher salt

• Freshly ground black pepper

• Lemon wedge, for serving

• Freshly chopped parsley, for garnish

Directions

Step 1: In a large bowl, toss potatoes with oil, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and Cajun seasoning, if using. Season with salt and pepper.

Step 2: Place potatoes in basket of air fryer and cook at 400° for 10 minutes. Shake basket and stir potatoes and cook until potatoes are golden and tender, 8 to 10 minutes more.

Step 3: Squeeze lemon juice over cooked potatoes and garnish with parsley before serving.

Ingredients for chips

• 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/4” sticks

• 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

• 1/2 tsp chili powder

• 1/2 tsp garlic powder

• Kosher salt

• Freshly ground black pepper

Dipping sauce

• 2 tbsp BBQ sauce

• 2 tbsp mayonnaise

• 1 tsp hot sauce (such as Texas Pete)

Directions

Sweet potato chips

Step 1: In a large bowl, toss sweet potatoes, oil, chili powder, and garlic powder until combined and evenly coated; season with salt and pepper, then toss again.

Step 2: Working in batches, in an air-fryer basket, arrange sweet potatoes in a single layer. Cook at 375° for 6 minutes, flip fries, then continue to cook until browned and crispy, 5 to 8 minutes more.

Dipping sauce

Step 1: In a medium bowl, whisk BBQ sauce, mayonnaise, and hot sauce to combine.

Step 2: Arrange sweet potato fries on a platter. Serve with sauce alongside for dipping.

With 640 unique productions in 14 genres presented in 50 venues in and around Stellenbosch, the Toyota SU Woordfees is one of the biggest arts festivals in Africa. The 2023 programme embodies the effervescent festival theme, Borrel (bubble in English), in various ways. “Borrel” is the Dutch word for party, and it immediately brings the sparkling bubbles of Cap Classique made in the Boland to mind. The theme also alludes to breaking out of your bubble to be challenged or inspired by exploring new perspectives. This year’s festival programme offers a rich variety of opportunities not only to escape into worlds of beauty, humour, and drama but also to reflect on the complexity of our realities.

Between 7 and 15 October you can enjoy book talks, theatre, classical music, heavenly choirs, pop, folk, rock, jazz, hip-hop, current affairs, comedy, dance, art, films, and everything that can be tasted, enjoyed, and experienced in the Winelands.

And no, you don’t have to understand any Afrikaans to have a great time at the festival. The 70 films from 20 countries screened at the Neelsie Cinema all have English subtitles. And there’s a big selection of music, dance and visual arts requiring no knowledge of Afrikaans.

FESTIVAL

Here are a few highlights in the various genres: EasyEquities writer’s festival

The Woordfees began as a book festival and the Writers’ Festival still lies at the heart of the programme. Visitors can choose from 54 book discussions in which more than 90 well-known writers and others will participate. New publications including books from authors such as, among others, Barbara Masekela, Bibi Slippers, Eben Venter, Etienne van Heerden, Johann Rossouw, Jonny Steinberg, Marita van der Vyver, Rudie van Rensburg and Sihle Khumalo will all be under discussion, and we are raising a glass to beloved West Coast author Sussie Kotze who will be turning 90.

Theatre

The programme offers 37 productions, of which 13 debut at the festival. Boesak, a one-man play with Marlo Minnaar, chronicles the life of the theologian and anti-apartheid activist Allan Boesak – from his student days and his activities in the ministry, to his divorce from his first wife, his marriage to Elna Botha, and the controversy surrounding his fraud case and prison sentence. It is written and directed by Mercy Kannemeyer. This will be one of the highlights of the Woordfees. Top actors including Tinarie van Wyk Loots, Wilhelm van der Walt, Stian Bam, Rolanda Marais, Sandra Prinsloo and Dawid Minnaar, will again attract large audiences.

English productions are led by Geoffrey Hyland’s sparkling A Midsummer Night’s Dream that played to packed houses during its run at Maynardville earlier this year; Sandra Prinsloo’s mesmerising turn as Maria Callas in Terrence McNally’s Master Class; Nadia

Davids’ Hold Still directed by Jay Pather and starring Andrew Buckland as the head of a family forced to confront what it is they owe each other and others; David Kramer’s Ver in die wêreld Kittie that recounts a story of singers who became famous in America singing English versions of Afrikaans folk songs; and Magnet Theatre’s riveting Oedipus at Colonus #aftersophocles with Jennie Reznek and Faniswa Yisa, directed by Mark Fleishman, that played to great acclaim earlier this year at the Baxter Theatre.

Others

This year’s programme once again features a Fringe and Children’s Festival. There are 13 plays, four of which are debuts, on the Fringe programme. The Fringe provides an opportunity for young artists to experiment and for festivalgoers to discover exciting, emerging talent. The Children’s Festival line-up has eight shows that promise great, educational entertainment and fun for younger visitors and their parents.

Other genres include dance, comedy, visual arts, classical music, four big open air music festivals and there are more than 50 events on the lifestyle programme.
