fortheiramazingdedica�onandresilienceduringthe pandemicandlockdownperiods.Despitethedevasta�ngly hard�mesformany,IhopeyoucanagreethattheViewfinders club–throughtheirefforts-hasofferedsomesupportand encouragementtoeveryonewhocaredto‘dropin’toour onlinemee�ngsora�endourtrips,wheneverthesewere possible,andsobroughtsomevaluetothosepeople.Inthis way,amajorroleoftheclubhasbeenmostworthilyfulfilled: thatofprovidingasocialnetworkforpeoplewithaninterestin photographyatanylevel.So,VFCommi�eeandmembersall–THANKYOU.

Themaineventoftheeveningwasoneofourmost successfulsemi-annualphotoprojects,this�meon thesubjectof“Water”,with13membershaving submi�edatotalof83photos.Theimagesshowed waterinmanyofitsdifferentformsincludingrain, ice,mist,foam,dewdrops,watercanons,andin variouscountriesandsurroundingssuchasoceans, canals,fountains,reflec�onsinpuddles,wetsand, andeventheappearanceofoceansinminerals.

Twoofthesebookseries,“ONossoOlharnoMundo”and“A ArtedeFotografarP&B”,donothaveaspecificthemeand coverdifferentgenressuchaslandscape,cityscape,portrait, streetphotography,etc,thefirstseriesincolourandthe secondinblack&white.Thethirdseries,“Horizontesdo Infinito”,isrestrictedtolandscapephotosincolour,although theconceptoflandscapeisinterpretedquitebroadly,to includebothnaturalandhumanised(includingurban) landscapes. Theselec�onofthephotographerswhopar�cipateineach bookisdonebythepublisher,andthechoiceofphotosis “nego�ated”byhimwitheachphotographer.Inowtendto sendhimabout50%morephotosthannecessaryandlethim chosetheonestobepublished.Forthefirstbook,however,I askedhimtolookatmyFlickrpageandiden�fysomephotos thathethoughtwouldfitwellinthebook,sothatIcouldhave anideaofwhathewaslookingfor. Duetothesitua�onwithCovid-19,therewasnopubliclaunchingfor thesebooks,whichcameoutinearly2021,andtheusualexhibi�on thataccompaniedthelaunchingalsodidnottakeplace.

Whenitcomestophotography,Iamacomplete amateur,althoughanenthusias�cone.Ilovebeing outinnatureandphotographinglandscapes,butI tendtodowhatevergenreofphotographyIcan,onweekends andholidaysandsome�mesevenwork-dayevenings. Iliketopostmyphotosinsocialmedia,notforthethrillofthe “likes”butmainlysothattheyareseenbysomeoneelseanddo notremainjustabunchofbitsinacomputerdisk(actuallythree computerdisks,Iamquitecarefulwithdoingregularback-ups…) AsItendtobequitecri�calofwhatIdo,Iwasverysurprised whenIwascontacted,atthebeginningofSeptember2020,by aPortuguesepublisherofphotographybooks,JoséGodinho (GODPublishing).Heexplainedthathewaspublishingaseries ofbookscalled“ONossoOlharnoMundo”(somethinglike “ourregardontheworld”),withphotosfromfi�een photographers(aboutadozenphotoseach,dependingonthe format).HehadseensomeofmyphotosonFacebookand wouldbehappytoincludesomeofmyphotosinvolume5of theseries,tobepublishedinafewmonths. Ihadneverseenoneofhisbooksinprint,butIknew photographerswhohadbeenfeaturedinoneortwoofthem, soIdidafewphonecallstofindoutaboutthequalityofthe printsandtheresponsewasquiteenthusias�c. So,tocutalongstoryshort,Iacceptedtheinvita�onand, a�eranexchangeofmailsanda�erJosétookalookatmy

FastforwardtoearlyFebruary2022,andIhadanothermessage fromJoséGodinho,sayinghehadoneslotfreeinvolume8of theseries“ONossoOlharnoMundo”andaskingwhetherI wouldbeinterestedinpar�cipa�ngagain.Ihesitated,asthelast coupleofyearshadnotbeenveryac�vephotographically speaking,buta�ergoingthroughmylastphotosIdecidedto “jumpin”oncemore. This�me,itwasfinallypossibletomakeapublicpresenta�onof thebookinLisbon(on9April,whichunfortunatelyIcouldnot a�end)andthiswasaccompaniedbyanexhibi�onofuptotwo photosperpar�cipant.Boththepresenta�onandtheexhibi�on werefortwobooks,theoneinwhichIpar�cipatedandthelatest volumeoftheblack&whiteseries.

Havingaphotobookinmyhandscertainlybeatswatching photosonacomputerorphonescreenany�me,soifyouhave notdoneityetthinkaboutprin�ngyourphotoseitheras individualprintstohangonthewallorinabook.Youwillnot regrettheeffortand�mespentdoingit!

Veryquickly,MIDIcontrollersarehardwaredevices tradi�onallydesignedtoworkwithmusicperformance andproduc�onhardwareandso�ware,buttheyareso versa�lethatcanbeconfiguredtoworkwithother applica�onsinasimilarway.Theycanbeusedin photographypost-processingasareplacementor companiontothecomputerkeyboardandthemouse, allowingtosendcommandstotheapplica�onfrom dedicatedcontrollers,likerota�ngknobs,sliders, pushingbu�ons.

automa�callywhenyouopentheapplica�on.The pluginreceivesacommandfromthecontroller(pusha bu�on,turnaknob,...)andconvertsitdirectlyintoa pre-configuredfunc�on(i.e.:converttoB&W,raise Exposure+1).Setupisfairlysimple,anditwillrequire thatyouassigncontrolsfromthehardwaredeviceto specificLightroomfunc�ons.Thesefunc�ons,bythe way,couldbealmostanythingthatyoucandointhe applica�on,notjustpost-processingtasks.Idescribe thisinmoredetailinmyoriginalar�cle.

Afewyearsago,Iwroteanar�cleabouttheuseof hardwareMIDIcontrollerswithLightroomClassic.

Anexampleisthe TangentWave2ControlSurface, whichapparentlyworksseamlesslywithAdobe LightroomClassicandwithCaptureOne(theonesIam mostlyfamiliarwith). However,theycomewithahighpricetag,some�mes hardtojus�fyfortheaveragephotographer.

Forthehardwaredevicetocommunicatewith LightroomClassic,addi�onalso�wareisrequiredthat sitsbetweenthetwo.InLightroomthisiseasyto implementbecauseLRhasbuilt-inopenAPIsupport(ifI

Therearehardwaredevicesinthemarketdesignedwith thephotographerinmindthatallowyoutoedityour imagesfromaconsolefullofknobsandbu�ons,making yourworkmoreefficient,awayfromdoingeverything withtheclickofamouse,whichisconvenientbut perhapsabitslow,oneslideata�me.

Therearealsothe Loupedeck+ andLoupedeckCT devices,whichsupportPhotoshopaswell.Thepriceis moreaffordableandcanbeagoodop�onforthosethat wantsomethingsimplertoconfigure.

MIDI2LRisinstalledasaLightroompluginanditruns

loseyouhere,itbasicallymeansthattheso�warehas anopengatetoreceivecommandsfromtheoutside, notjustfromatradi�onalcomputerkeyboardand mouse).Severalso�warealterna�vescanbefound.The onethatseemstobemorepopularandthatIhavebeen usingforawhilenowisMIDI2LR,availableforfree.

Frompersonalexperience,theuseofMIDIcontrollersis anexcellentsolu�onthatchangesthewayIapproach edi�ng.SomereasonsIcanthinkof: 1.LikeIsaid…enoughwiththemouse. 2.Icanmakemul�pleadjustmentssimultaneously(for example,boos�ngexposureandcontrastatthe same�me) 3.WhilemakingadjustmentsinlayermodeIs�llhave accesstotheoveralledi�ngcontrols,withouthaving toexitthelayer.Thinkaboutthat… 4.Icandisplayimagesinfullscreenwhileedi�ng them,whichalsoresultsinfasterloadingofthe images,becausetheapplica�ondoesn’tneedto refreshalltheslidersforeveryimagetoshowits currentstate.

Thesedevicesareeasytosetup,theycomepreconfiguredtoworkwithyourapplica�onofchoice,and thereisli�leknowledgerequiredfromtheusertogetit going.However,thealterna�veofusingaMIDI controllerremainspopularamongphotographers,forits lowpriceandversa�litytocustomizetheminawaythat be�erfitsyourpersonalworkflow.

Warning: edi�ngcontrolsaresomuchwithinreachthatI couldsome�meserronthesideoftouchingtoomany knobs,whichcouldarguablyaffecttheperformanceof theapplica�on.That’sforeachonetoevaluate.I’mok withthat.

Touchscreens

Ifyourlaptophasatouchscreen,youmayalreadybe takingadvantageofthepossibili�estomovesliders directlywithyourfingers.Otherwise,anothersolu�onis theuseofaniPadasacontrollertotheapplica�on runningonyourcomputer.Forthis,youneedtoinstall anappcalledMIDIDesignerintheiPad,andthe MIDI2LRpluginonthecomputer.Asinprevious examples,youcancreateacustommappingtocontrol anyfunc�onsinLR.

For50-100eurosyoucouldgetadecentcontrollerthat doesthejob.Overthelastfewyears,theBehringerXTouchMiniremainsasoneofthemostpopularchoices amongphotographers.IuseaBehringerBCR2000,and thereisasimilarbutmorecompactmodelyettobe released,theBCR32,whichlooksinteres�ng.AnyMIDI controllerfromanymanufacturershoulddothework justfine.Feelfreetocontactmeifyou’dliketoknow more. 7

CaptureOnedoesnotofferthisopenAPIsupportlikeLR does,and,fromwhatIreadoninternetforums,the developerPhaseOnehasnotshowedanyinteresttodo sointhenearfuture. Thereisanalterna�vethatreliesonkeyboardshortcuts and,again,theuseofaso�warethatstandsbetween thehardwaredeviceandtheapplica�on.

Thisso�wareisBomeMIDITranslator(pricedat59€),a MIDIandkeystrokemappingtoolthattakescommands fromtheMIDIcontroller(again,pushabu�on,turna knob,…)andtranslatethemintokeyboardshortcuts (Ctrl+A,Ctrl+Q,Shi�+A,F3,....)thatCaptureOnewill understand,asiftheywereorderedfromtheuser.So, basicallyyouares�llinterac�ngthroughtheuser interfaceofCaptureOne,asopposedtothesolu�onin Lightroom,whichbypassestheinterfaceandgoes directlyintotheapplica�onengine.Youcanimagine therearesomelimitedbenefitshere.

HowaboutCaptureOne?

Onaposi�veside,CaptureOneallowsyoutocreate customkeyboardshortcutstoanyfunc�onandsaveall yourcustomshortcutsandmappingasaseparateset. ThefirststepwouldbetodefineshortcutsinCapture Oneforeverythingthatyouwanttocontrolremotely, andthenconfigureeachofthesekeystrokesinBome andassociateeachofthemwithacontrolintheMIDI device.Thistaskisabittediousandhadabitofa learningcurvetomakeitworkbecausetherewasnot muchdocumenta�onavailable.OnceIfiguredouthow toconfigureonefunc�on,itwasama�erofrepea�ng thesameconfigura�onforeachaddi�onalfunc�on. Perhapsnotforeveryone,butthesolu�onistherefor thosewhowanttogiveitatry.

Bytheway,BomeTranslatorshouldinprinciplebeable toworkagainstanyso�wareapplica�on,notjust CaptureOne,sinceallitdoesisrecreatekeystrokesin thesamewayanormaluserwouldenterthemfroma computerkeyboard. WhatcontrollershouldIget?

A lecSothisanAmericanphotographerbornin1969. Hisworkmergesadocumentarystylewithapoe�c sensibility.Some�meagoIwaswatchingaMagnum masterclassaboutphotographicstorytellingandtheclass wasleadbyAlecSoth,aphotographerfromtheFrench agencyMagnum,whoIdidnotknowbefore.AlreadyIlike verymuchdocumentaryphotographyassuchandIlikeit s�llmorewiththispersonaltwistaddedbySoth. WhenItravelledtoMunich,Germany,atthebeginningof May2022IfoundoutthatSoth'sexhibi�on“Gathered leaves”openedjustwhenIwasthere.OfcourseIwentto seeit! Theexhibi�onwashostedintheKuns�oyerandcompiles picturesstemmingfromfivecharacteris�cserieswhichare "SleepingbytheMississippi"(2004)."Niagara"(2006), "BrokenManual"(2010),"Songbook"(2014)and"APound ofPictures"(2022).Ands�llbe�er:whenIwasleavingthe exhibi�on,theladyattherecep�ondesktoldmethatAlec SothwasabouttoarriveandthatImighthavemycatalogue signedbyhim. 15minuteslater,andtherehewas!Gotmycatalogue signedandfollowedthegroupofstudentswhowerewith himandtowhomhegaveaguidedtourthroughthe exhibi�on.Duringthetourheexplainedthathisstyleis somehowlabelledasbeingdocumentarybutinreality, that'snothisaim.Hejustwishestogiveaverypersonal interpreta�onofwhatheobservesduringhistripsthrough theUS.It'snotmeanttobeadocumentaryofAmerican society.

AlecSoth In2006,AlecSothcameupwithanotherbrilliantseries, Niagara.Heshotbrilliants�llsoftheNiagaraFalls.Theses�lls areatypicalportrayalsofthewaterandthepeoplearoundit. Itabeau�fulillustra�onofblossomingloveandbroken hearts,suicidesandhoneymoons,ringsandlovele�ers. Inaninterview,Sothsharedthatwhenhefirstbegan,hewas knownforbeingnervouswhilephotographingstrangers.He wasquiteuncomfortablethen,unlikewhenheshootss�lls forlandscapeswherehecanenjoyasolitaryfeeling.

HeldonceayearinApril,thegardenersofthecastlehand plantedmorethanonemillionbulbs,withspeciala�en�on goingtothetulips,withalmost400varie�es.Hyacinthsand daffodilswerealsowellrepresented.

Thedesign,realiza�onandcrea�onoftheflowerbedswere arrangedbyexpertsinthebulbindustry.Lookingforthe mostinteres�ngvarie�es,theysearchedacrossthe Netherlandstofindthemostbeau�fulspeciesandthemost talentedproducers.

TheJapanesegardeninHasseltisthelargestofitskindin Europe.Itshistorydatesbackto1985,whenthecityof HasseltandtheJapanesecityofItamisignedafriendship charter,becomingsisterci�es.TheJapaneseGarden encouragesmedita�onandreflec�onandistheperfect se�ngtofullyexperiencetheJapaneseculture.Ariver,or creek,symbolizestheflowoflife.

Thephotosaccompanyingthisar�cleshowtheCeremonial House,calledaKorokan,whichmeansaplaceofrestand shelterfortravelers,andthecolorfulreflec�onsinthewater aroundit. A�erstoppingatthesnackareatogetsomethingtoeatand todrink,wearrivedatthefarendofthegardenatthePeace Bell.ThePeaceBellwasinauguratedinOctober2016in celebra�onofthe150yearsofdiploma�crela�onsbetween BelgiumandJapan.Thebellisalsoamemorialforthe vic�msthatdiedduringthedestruc�onofHiroshimaand Nagasakiin1945. OppositethePeaceBellwesawtheShinto-shrineorJinja andcon�nuedtotheTeaHouse,Jyushoan,whichstands atoponeofthear�ficialhillsoftheJapaneseGarden, represen�ngthemountainsofJapan.Wethenstartedour walkbackfollowingaslightlydifferentpath. WeweretoolatetoseetheCherryBlossomFes�val, howeverits225JapanesecherrytreesorSakuratreesare theprideofthegarden.
