THE BIG WEST
Letter from Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly
Dear Big West Basketball Fans,
Welcome to Henderson, Nevada and the 2024 Hercules Tires Big West Basketball Championships. We are pleased to be back at The Dollar Loan Center for a third year and we look forward to another exciting week of Big West women’s and men’s basketball.
In the next four days, we will crown the champions who will represent The Big West in the NCAA Division I Basketball Championships. Our staff is keenly aware that this week will be a first experience at a Big West Championship for some student-athletes, while for others it will mark their last collegiate game. Our goal is to make this a positive and memorable event for our student-athletes and fans alike. We are grateful for your attendance, cheering positively and with enthusiasm in being a part of this next chapter in the history of Big West basketball.
As you may know, this fall we announced a three-year extension of our agreement with The Dollar Loan Center through the 2027 Big West Basketball Championships. This was a move our student-athletes, coaches, administration and the fans who attended the event in-person roundly supported.
Of course, we have also heard questions about returning these championships to Southern California. After exploring several options, the path became clear. Playing in Henderson is not only the desire of our membership, but it is the most financially prudent move for our conference. The Dollar Loan Center provides amenities that no other venue of its size can match. This community and this venue are home for Big West basketball in mid-March.
We are thankful for the continued support of our partners at bd Global, the Foley Entertainment Group and the City of Henderson in making this a first-class event. The tremendous effort a host of staff and volunteers have put into making these two championships an unforgettable experience is both recognized and appreciated.
To the student-athletes who give their all for a chance to participate in the 2024 NCAA Basketball Championships, we wish you the best of success. We also thank each and every game official for choosing to officiate The Big West Basketball Championships.
Last, but certainly not least, thank you for your support of Big West basketball from wherever you call home and for making the effort to be here in Henderson to witness history in the making.
Enjoy the games!
Dan Butterly Commissioner The Big WestWelcome!
Once again, Hercules Tires is proud to power the Big West Basketball Championships as the title sponsor for 2024.
As this season reaches its dramatic conclusion, we celebrate the countless hours and ceaseless effort of all this year’s competitors. From court to classroom, through every game and every practice, these athletes have dedicated themselves to success in many forms. They exemplify the drive to thrive, and we are honored to be with them on the road to victory.
With everything we do, Hercules Tires builds on a foundation first established in 1952: Confident performance, continuous growth, and courageous leadership. That same spirit is carried by the young men and women competing within the Big West Basketball Championships. Like Hercules, their strength is in unity, teamwork, and the shared outcome of triumph. We rally under the mantra of Ride on Our Strength––but with the accomplishments of these athletes, we are inspired by theirs.
We recognize that such strength wouldn’t be possible without support from the passionate students, alumni, faculty, staff and fans of the Big West Basketball Championships. Together, you are the engine that drives these destinies.
Good luck to you all,

CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: MEN
WELCOME TO THE MADNESS OF MARCH.
Following a wild regular season finish that saw five spots in the 2024 Hercules Tires Big West Men’s Basketball Championship claimed in the season’s final week, the quest for an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament begins.
Action starts on Wednesday, March 13 at 6 p.m. when No. 5 UC Riverside (15-17; 10-10 Big West) takes on No. 8 Cal State Bakersfield (13-18; 8-12 Big West). Both teams finished the season winning three of their last four games.
Big West Freshman of the Year Barrington Hargress (12.4 ppg) is UCR’s leading scorer with fellow All-Big West Honorable Mention honoree Isaiah Moses pitching in 12.1 points per contest.
The eighth-seeded Roadrunners’ attack runs through senior guard Kaleb Higgins. Higgins, an All-Big West Second Teamer from Pine Bluff, Ark., averaged 21.6 points per game in the last two weeks of the regular season.
The two teams split the season series. Cal State Bakersfield won a decisive 80-56 victory at home before dropping a hard-fought rematch 65-63 on a fadeaway jumper at the buzzer by the Highlanders’ Kyle Owens.
The No. 6 seed UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (16-14; 9-11 Big West) and the seventh-seeded CSUN Matadors (18-14; 9-11 Big West) close out the action on Wednesday, March 13.
Two-time All-Big West First Team honoree and 202223 Big West Player of the Year Ajay Mitchell runs the Gauchos’ attack, averaging 19.4 points per game, third best in the conference. Sophomore forward Yohan Traore’s 14.4 points and 5.2 rebounds also earned him All-Big West Honorable Mention accolades.
Under first-year head coach Andy Newman, the Matadors are The Big West’s biggest success story.
Picked to finish tenth in the preseason, CSUN made noise with a signature win at UCLA in December en route to the program’s most wins in 16 years.
Graduate forward De’Sean Allen-Eikens, an All-Big West First Teamer and junior guard Dionte Bostick, an Honorable Mention All-Big West player, are players to watch. Allen-Eikens pours in 18.5 points a night to lead the team while Bostick is second with 15.3.
The Gauchos and Matadors split their regular-season meetings, with each team winning on the road. The advancing squad gets third-seeded Hawai`i in Thursday’s second round.
CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: MEN
#4 SEED: Long Beach State (18-14; 10-10 Big West) faces the winner of the UC Santa Barbara vs. CSUN tilt. The Beach have five players who average doublefigures in scoring, led by All-Big West First Team honoree and Best Hustle Player Aboubacar Traore. Traore’s frontcourt mate, Lassina Traore (no relation), led The Big West grabbing 10.4 rebounds per game which is tenth nationally.
#3 SEED: Hawai`i (19-13; 11-9 Big West) returns to the “ninth island” on a three-game winning streak. The trio of Justin McKoy, Noel Coleman and Bernardo da Silva all earned All-Conference honors in 2023-24. McKoy, a graduate transfer from North Carolina, was second on the team with 12.4 points and 6.2 rebounds, while da Silva led the league in field goal percentage (.608) and finished third in the conference with 7.1 rebounds per contest. Coleman led the Rainbow Warriors in scoring for the second straight season at 13.9 points per game while also pacing the team in minutes per game (32.6 mpg) and steals (34).
#2 SEED: UC Davis (19-12; 14-6 Big West) boasts perhaps The Big West’s best guard tandem with AllBig West Second Teamer Ty Johnson (17.6 ppg) and 2024 Big West Player of the Year Elijah Pepper. Pepper, a First-Team All-Conference performer and the conference’s scoring leader (20.5 ppg), lands in Henderson as The Big West’s second all-time leading scorer. He needs 75 points to eclipse Long Beach State’s Lucious Harris. With a potent offensive attack, Jim Les’ Aggies also boast the league’s second stiffest defense, allowing just 68.0 points per game.
#1 SEED: UC Irvine (24-8; 17-3 Big West) was picked fourth in the pre-season coaches’ poll, but the Anteaters enter the postseason as The Big West’s No. 1 seed. Guards Pierre Crockrell II, Justin Hohn and Andre Henry all earned Big West postseason accolades for leading the conference’s top team. Crockrell, an All-Big West First Teamer, leads the conference in assists (6.3 apg). Hohn, a Second Team
selection, and Henry, the league’s Best Defensive Player, pace the Anteaters with 12.5 and 10.6 points per game, respectively. UC Irvine won six of their last seven contests down the stretch to earn the top seed.
The 2024 Hercules Tires Big West Men's Basketball Championship is truly anyone's to win. Six different Big West schools have won the conference title and the top seed has claimed the crown only three times in the last ten years. The Big West has not had a repeat men’s champion since UC Santa Barbara claimed back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011. During that span (10 champions), the No. 2 seed has earned the title three times (2017, '22, '23), the third seed took the crown in 2015, No. 4 won in 2018 and No. 7 Cal Poly won in 2014, the lowest seeded victor in championship history.
Enjoy the games!
CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: WOMEN
WELCOME TO THE MADNESS OF MARCH.
The Big West opens a new chapter in 2024 with a new championship format that includes two women’s games per day March 13-15. In the eight-team format, the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds receive a bye to the quarterfinals, while the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds wait until the semifinals on Friday, March 15, to make their first appearances.
Action begins on Wednesday, March 13 at Noon when No. 5 seed UC Davis (17-13; 13-7 Big West) takes on No. 8 Cal State Fullerton (10-20; 6-14 Big West). The Titans made the field on the final day of competition.
The guard tandem of senior Evanne Turner and junior Tova Sabel pace the Aggies’ attack scoring 14.52 and 14.00 ppg respectively. Sabel scored her 1,000th career point in a season-high 28 point performance vs. UC San Diego in the penultimate game of the regular season. For her efforts the Penn State transfer was named to the All-Big West Second Team as well as the Big West Player of the Week the final week of the 2023-24 regular season. Turner, a versatile player from Fontana, Calif., leads the team in assists average (2.66) and is seventh in The Big West in three-point field goal percentage (.371). She earned a second AllBig West First Team honor this season.
The Titans counter with senior guard Gabi Vidmar, an Honorable Mention All-Big West performer who was in three-point field goal percentage this season (.371) and a pair of All-Freshman Team selections in Hope Hassmann and Eva Levingston.
UC Davis swept the season series between the two, winning 66-50 at home and 61-48 at Fullerton. Sabel led all scorers in both contests with 16 and 17 points respectively.
The No. 6 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (16-14; 10-10 Big West), led by All-Big West First Team performer Alexis Whitfield, take on No. 7 Long Beach State (13-17; 8-12 Big West) in a rematch of a game played just six days
ago. Whitfield, a senior forward from West Hills, Calif., led the conference in rebounding (9.57 rpg) and finished second in scoring (14.63 ppg) this season.
Long Beach State first-year head coach Amy Wright relies on the junior guard tandem of Sydney Woodley and Casey Valenti-Paea. The duo garnered All-Big West Honorable Mention honors while Woodley also earned a spot on the Big West All-Defensive Team while leading the conference and is sixth nationally in steals per game (3.32).
The teams split the regular season series with the Gauchos winning 69-56 in Long Beach on the strength of UCSB senior guard Alyssa Marin’s career-high 25 points. The Beach had four starters in double-figures when they evened the series on March 7 with a 75-69 win. UCSB’s Alexis Whitfield poured in a career-high 27 points in the loss.
#4 SEED: Cal Poly Mustangs (17-12; 13-7 Big West) tip off at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, facing the winner of the matchup between No. 5 UC Davis and No. 8 Cal State Fullerton. Look for All-Big West First Team performer Natalia Ackerman, The Big West’s leader in field goal percentage (.591) and blocked shots (2.10 per game) and second-leading rebounder (8.69 rpg) to spark second-year coach Shanele Stires’ squad. Ackerman earned Big West All-Defensive Team honors alongside All-Freshman team member Mary Carter and Honorable Mention All-Conference point guard, junior Annika Shah.
CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: WOMEN
#3 SEED: UC Riverside (18-12; 13-7 Big West) claimed the No. 3 seed after being picked to finish 10th in the coaches pre-season poll. The Highlanders will take on the winner of the UC Santa Barbara vs. Long Beach State game at Noon on Thursday, March 14. UC Riverside looks to the conference’s leading scorer and 2024 All-Big West First Teamer Jordan Webster (16.9 ppg) to shoulder the load offensively. Senior forward Matehya Bryant, the Big West’s Best Hustle Player and second team All-Conference performer, is a key to a stingy defense. The Highlanders have been limiting opponents to 57 points per game, while forcing 20.17 turnovers per game, tops in the league and 21st nationally.
#2 SEED: UC Irvine (21-8; 16-4 Big West) tips off at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 15. The Anteaters, The Big West’s most decorated women’s team, earned nine allconference honors. UC Irvine’s first-ever Big West Player of the Year, junior guard Déja Lee, an All-Big West First Teamer as well, is the team’s leading scorer (13.76 ppg). Lee is joined in the backcourt by Big West Newcomer of the Year and Second Team All-
Conference honoree Moulayna Johnson Sidi Baba. The Big West’s Defensive Player of the Year, senior guard Diaba Konate anchors the Anteaters’ stalwart defense which limited opponents to just 55.52 points per game to lead The Big West. UC Irvine comes to Henderson as winners of their last four contests and eight of their last nine.
#1 SEED: The top-seeded Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (20-9; 17-3 Big West) fulfilled the coaches’ pre-season prediction of finishing tops in The Big West despite a 3-6 start in non-conference play. 2023-24 Big West Coach of the Year Laura Beeman’s team has never lost in The Dollar Loan Center and the team enters the championship on a seven-game winning streak.
Las Vegas native and 2023 Big West Women’s Basketball Championship MVP Daejah Phillips looks to engineer the league’s first three-peat since UC Santa Barbara claimed 9 straight titles between 19972005. The junior guard provides a spark earning both 2024 All-Big West First Team and a second career Best Sixth Player honor. Junior guard Lily Wahinekapu (11.6 ppg) controls the Hawai`i offense while fellow AllBig West Second Team honoree Imani Perez is an elite defender and shot blocker. Perez, a sophomore forward from Denver, Colo., is naturally a member of the Big West All-Defensive Team.
On the women’s side, five different teams have claimed The Big West’s automatic berth in the past ten championships. In that span, the No. 1 seed has claimed The Big West’s automatic berth only four times, 2014, 2019, 2021 and 2022.
Anything can happen . . . and it probably will.
Enjoy the games!

From February 1 through March 9, all Big West women's basketball programs teamed up with Metastatic Breast Cancer Thriver Tammy Blackburn and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund for TOUGH LIKE TAMMY, a program designed to raise funds to support research on all cancers affecting women.
TOUGH LIKE TAMMY
Tammy Blackburn is a long-time broadcaster for The Big West. Her cancer journey has inspired many. She is an avid partner with the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and believes strongly in the Fund's mission of raising money for life saving cancer research, funding programs that provide access to quality cancer healthcare for under-resourced women and uniting people in the fight against all cancers affecting women.
You have to be tough to grab an offensive rebound in The Big West and even tougher to fight cancer. This season Big West fans stepped up and smashed the goal of raising $5,000 to support cancer research.
The Kay Yow Cancer Fund is grateful to the Big West women's basketball teams and fans who participated in this important initiative. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund's Play4Kay program is its largest fundraising initiative and plays a major role in uniting players, coaches and communities.
