Proposals for exhibits in Benzie Building

This is a document displaying my development and plans in working towards ideas for the vertical gallery in the Benzie Building, at Manchester School of Art. As part of my final major project I have decided to use this opportunity to experiment explore ideas that fit the gallery space to which I will then pitch my final ideas as a presentation to a panel, to have the opportunity to exhibit the proposed work during the 2014 Degree Show.


Objective. Design an installation/piece of artwork that is suitable to the modern design of the Benzie building, makes a dramatic entrance to the rest of the show, producing a piece that presents the space as a professional exhibition. For my first proposal i have decided to pitch the previous work that I did in the practice unit as it was a way of placing my work into its context. I thought it would be appropriate as I could think about how each piece was viewed in each space.

Concept I create images that explore the concepts of light, colour, movement and space. Using light as my source, I use my camera to dematerialize, disfigure and deform different objects. My aim is to extract and obscure the true identity of these objects. My work is influenced by the theories and perception of light, colour and creation of immersive spaces. I want to allow the viewer to become immersed by the colour and form of the images that raise questions of what they’re looking at.

Putting all images together in a space that displays images and videos (highlighted) that explore the same themes within colour, motion and light. Making them small instead of upscaling. Displayed in a space where people can go and study the images. Glow is a faster looping video/gif. Whilst the film ‘fabric’ is very slow moving. People who where sitting down would only notice its change over a period of time. Stage two Idea One

Space : G (big space 3rd floor) Form: Photograph Name: Unknown To be printed on a large scale, and placed in the middle of the gallery on the 3rd floor. I want my images to attract peoples attention, in this particular space, I hope that the bright colours and unusual form of the image will catch the eyes of the people walking the otherside of the bridges when they open the lift. The bridge allows time for question until they are able to stand and inspect the colours and patterns within the large scale. I am inspirered by Mark Rothko, as his classic paintings from the 1950's are characterised by large dimensions, simpli-

Space: F (Long wall located next to stairs Second floor ) Name : G L O W (projection) Time : 01:08 Glow is a piece that I have created from a series of experiments exploring movement, colour, and light. I am interested in abstracting and disfiguring objects from their true identity. The film contains small red/orange squares that smoothly emerge towards and retract again. Originally this film is slow moving allowing the shapes to emerge towards the viewer slowly, the original context is for this film was to be placed within a space that will allow the viewer only to notice its movement over a period of time. However for the vertical gallery, I have speed up the film by 400x allowing the movements to be noticed by people walking through the gallery to their next destination. The speed of the film is to the pace of a deep and calming breath, bringing the viewer down to its speed and providing a sense of calm, i think this space works best in this space as it is the darkest in the gallery, it is also a the only space in the gallery which joins the to stairwells together, this would become a busy walkway during the show, as the projection loops quickly it allows people to see it but pass on by, but would allow the viewer to stop and recoup on their journey if walking up the galleries.

Space: E (Cafe Lounge Space Ground Floor) Triptych of Images During the beginning of the practice unit, i created my own experiments after researching colour theory and light perception. These are the results to exploring unconventional ways of mixing colours to create their harmonies and colour complements. The prints would be a2 size each sat in a borderless white frame, allowing the colour to stand out but the frame remains descreet. I would hope that the colour brings the space to life, yet not to visually imposing for those who are in search for quiet and comfort in the seating area, I think it is important to have work that isn't to busy in a space of the building that can become quite hectic.

INTRO

New project ideas and development for a sight specific installation in the Vertical Gallery

Objective. To design an installation for the entrance of the vertical gallery space in the Benzie building. Exploring new concepts and ideas of colour, light and movement. Stage one translates these themes into ideas, explores concepts, which is then presented through digital sketches accompanied by relevant research and inspiration. Stage two develops one of these ideas; one that is most relevant to my project and initial plans, accompanied with installment plans.

I observe the way light interferes with objects and surfaces within our everyday environment, overlaying impermanent patterns and colours onto the existing surfaces. When light hits a transparent surface it reflects refracts and shadows the light. Using artificial light I want to add temporary layers of colour to the piece. Over the next few pages I will be showing my the first ideas which i had for the spaces. Im am interested in colour, light and movement, my ideas are developed around these three elements. I am interested in mixing colours together. As an installation the mixture of colour will happen due to the movement of the viewer, movement of the piece or movement by the light. My first designs are developing my original photographs of colours into installations. My chosen material for this pitch is to digitally print on Perspex.

Enterance SPACE

At the front of the Benzie Building two large automatic sliding doors open into a glass walled lobby space. There are two spaces either side of the walkway with a back wall and two glass sides. Another pair of sliding doors retract which opens the space into the reception area and the rest of the gallery. I would like to develop ideas around this space. My main ideas involve themes with movement. I am interested how the movement around the space can change the way an installations looks. The vertical gallery is a large open space with lots of open staircases and bridges linking each floor level together, as you walk up the levels through the stairs you are taken up and down the whole length of the gallery, using the space, viewing it at every possible angle. This building has inspired me to think about the perspective view of an installation.

Idea one Movement of building

Tess Jaray Tess Jaray’s work is characterised by the enigmatic interaction of forms and colours. She investigates the quality of effects that geometry, pattern, repetition and colour have on space. The patterns she creates suggest spatial ambiguities and shifting structures which work on the viewer’s perceptions in subtle ways. She says that whilst lots of public art is there to make people happier, she says that she does want to inforce feelings into an enviroment but cause a sublte disraction within pattern.

I was interested in studying the movement of the building instead of the viewer’s physical movement. The automatic doors slide open constantly slide open and closed throughout the day. During the practice unit I created a film where the lines of colours move across each other. As the lines move together it becomes hard to focus on the pattern. These movements and illusions has inspired me to try and recreate this effect but through the physical not on film. As people come to the Benzie building it will appear different, as the doors will either be open or close, revealing either a whole panel of colour, or a split one. The visualizations show the different patterns that could be created. This idea could also be developed into rotating doors.

Idea two Movement of viewer

This is an idea that uses suspended outlines of squares that range in all the colours. As the viewer moves around the space the lines of each piece of acrylic move around each other. When walking directly up to the Benzie building this piece of work may not be dominant to the space, but once through the first set of doors all the squares will fit into each other, creating a colourful and busy space. Material: pieces of coloured acrylic - laser cut into squares - hollow center





Stage Two

From the ideas in stage one, the final outcome for my design in the enterance space of the gallery has been created from a combination of the following themes: -An istallation that changes due to the perspective that its viewed from - merging/mixing colours together - creating shadows This proposal contains: - chosen space - colour development - lighting - fittings

As I have already discussed in stage one, I am interested in the mixtures of colours though basic shapes and transparent materials. The primary aim of the artwork is to allow the viewer to experience the mixture of colour through their changing perspective view of the installation. I feel that this space is the best place as there is a 360ยบ view of the pieces. Allowing the viewer to experiences the acrylic from different angles. The visualizations show 5 panels of colour on each side of the entrance. Total of 10 pieces of A2 size Perspex, five on each side. This will be clear acrylic that has digitally printed colour on it.

To make the piece more unique and to carry on with the ideas of colours merging together, each piece of acrylic contains two colours which merge together. The colour at the bottom of each piece is the same as the colour on the top of the next acrylic piece. As shown in visualizations on the page. This would be digitally printed right to the edge of the acrylic.



Lighting

Originally I wanted the lights to move around the installation, therefore allowing the shadows that are created by the lights and acrylic to move around the space on the floor. However i decided that it was to complicate to add to the fixtures within the existing space. The design has 5 lights on each side, which is placed between each piece of acrylic as seen in diagram one. Each light is fitted to the existing track on the ceiling on the side facing out of the building. By day the colours within the shadows would be subtle but at night the colours in the shadows would be much more vibrant. The installation would spread out into the outside of the pavement outside of the building. Both ideas are presented in the visualizations on the opposite page.

Fittings

Each piece of acrlic will have a laser cut hole, which is predrilled before it has been printed on. The visualizations above demonstrate this idea. On the top corners would have a sign clamp, which can hold any rigid sign panel up to 6mm thick. This is secured with a grub screw attached to a metal cable. The cable can be is cut to length and then secured in the sign clamp with the upper grub screw. A 2-part ceiling anchor screws to ceiling. The chrome cylinder creates a professional finish. Keeping the design simple and not distracting from the artwork.


Since returning to the space, there are a few obstacles that have made me realize that this design would not work as there would have been hanging issues, which would have meant installing a track for each piece to hang from. I felt that if I had to install this it would become to complicated and would be to imposing to the actual installation. I also realized that there can be a strong amount of wind entering the space when the doors open, as the pieces were not attached to the floor, they could be a potential health and safety issue. I felt that because there were potential issues with hanging, I did not want to risk pitching for this idea. This idea may work somewhere else, but I feel like its important that I focus on producing an outcome that looks profession, slick and fits into the space of the gallery. Something that is easy to install without to many complications of fittings, lighting and installment.



Final Proposal

New Objective Create an installation for the wall spaces in the vertical gallery of the benzie building. Something that is simple and complements the minimal architecture. Bringing an element of colour to the greys and materials within the stuctures. This design needs to be simple to install, with barely any extra design features in terms of lights and fittings. Develop ideas with shadows and perspex.


Colours

In this installation the main focus is the layers of merging shadows that the artwork creates, rather than the piece itself. Each piece of acrylic has one colour on it, colour psychology tells us that it is important to involve every colour to help keep a healthy balance and it can help control our moods. Too much of one colour and the negative elements will slowly start to effect you. This is why I have chosen to use all the colours. As I have explained before, I am interested in the mixture of colour, however as there is only one colour per piece of acrylic, the mixture and blending between colour happens through the shadows as the layer ontop of each other. The more lights that are on the piece the more shadows it creates. The less light the room is, the more vibrant the shadows will be. However the room does not have to be dark for this installation to work. The shadows are very delicate if in a lighter room which complements the clear delicate lines of the perspex.

Space : Space J Cafe Bar Area Installation one As this was one of the spaces available to TIP I have designed just a simple row of Perspex to line up next to each other, each containing a different colour. Each piece is the size of A4, I wanted to keep this design simple, but then play with the existing lights that are on a track to the top corners of the space. Which you can see in the visualization. Two lights either side of the installation will create a shadow either side of the Perspex, the shadows merging with the shadow from the other piece of acrylic. This creates a smooth transition of colour from the left to the right hand side of the installation.

Space: F second floor Installation two Using the same principle as installation one, this installation is 3x the size. Located in space F on the second floor, I have chosen this space as it is the darkest. Because this space is in the middle of the gallery it can be viewed from different levels. I want the colours to really be really vibrant so people are drawn to the space, adding an element of colour to the grey walls of the gallery. Instead of the a4 acrylic pieces sitting vertically on the wall, they will sit horizontally. The light will be positioned underneath the piece creating shadows up the wall and onto the ceiling. I have selected the colours from yellow, red and purple and blue. I wanted this installation to have fewer colours so that the mix of colour was more vibrant and spread out instead of small and intense.
