Seven-year cop, deputy charged with sex crimes London Williams Jr. out of jail after appearance in court

By Emily Wagster Pettus The Associated Press

By Pamela Hitchins phitchins@vicksburgpost. com A seven-year local law enforcement officer until last month was jailed Wednesday, charged after a grand jury indictment on one count of sexual battery and one count of incest. London Williams Jr., 40, 4425 Nailor Road, waived arraignment this morning before Circuit Judge M. James Chaney. Williams was released from the jail later this morning on a $25,000 bond. Williams had not been arrested during investigation of the accusations and was booked only after indictment by the grand jury, which is meeting this week. The complaint against Williams was made May 6, said Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace. The case was investigated by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the detective arm of the state police. “We were notified that the investigation was ongoing,” said District Attorney Ricky Smith after this morning’s hearing. “MBI provided us with a completed case file, and based on that information we decided to present the case to the grand jury, which resulted in the indictment.” Williams had last worked for the Warren County Sheriff’s Department April 6 when he was injured in a wreck at Clay and North Frontage roads and placed on medical leave, Pace said. The complaint that led to Wednesday’s arrest initially was made to the Vicksburg Police Department, the sheriff said. “The incident that was reported

PHILADELPHIA — State Sen. Alan Nunnelee of Tupelo, the Republican nominee in north Mississippi’s 1st Congressional District, used his speech Wednesday at the Neshoba County Fair to criticize the U.S. House speaker, Democrat Nancy Pelosi of California. Nunnelee said Democratic congressional leaders know they could lose their jobs if they lose north Mississippi and other seats. “This is a crusade to save America,” Nunnelee said of his own campaign. Childers was not scheduled to speak at the fair. Neshoba County is not in the 1st District, but politicians for decades have flocked to the fair to speak to crowds under a tinroofed pavilion. Earlier, Attorney General Jim Hood, a Democrat who is seeking a third term next year, said he’s working with attorneys general from other coastal states to ensure people are fairly compensated for losses from the BP oil spill. “Unfortunately, I don’t anticipate them being as nice once this well is capped and all the interest dies down,” Hood said of BP officials. Merchants across Vicksburg are gearing up for the second Sales Tax Holiday this weekend by promising good deals on items such as children’s clothing and shoes just in time for backto-school shopping. “This year, we’re expecting a bigger crowd because people know about it now and they’re expecting it.” said Outlets at Vicksburg’s marketing and events manager Paige Caldwell. Stores there, around Vicksburg and at most other places in the state will be offering discounts in addition to the 7 percent savings that come with a two-day suspension of Mississippi’s general sales.

Fifteen auto burglaries were reported in the past two days in Vicksburg, and authorities believe nine of them, in adjacent neighborhoods off U.S. 61 South, are related, Vicskburg police said. Separately, two men were arrested Wednesday after a customer at Kroger reported three men had broken into her vehicle while it was parked in the lot on Pemberton Square Boulevard. The first of the two arrested, Thomas Dearman, 17, Battlefield Campground Lot 13 4407 N. Frontage Road, was nabbed at Murphy gas station, 4103 Pemberton Square Blvd., minutes after the victim told police her purse was stolen, Sgt. Sandra Williams said. The second suspect, Tommy
