JACKSON — The Mississippi Supreme Court said Wednesday it will take up the legal challenge to the pardons ex-Gov. Haley Barbour gave out in his last days in office. State Attorney General Jim Hood, a Democrat, wants to invalidate dozens of the 198 pardons that Barbour, a Republican, handed out before his second four-year term ended Jan. 10. Ten of the people were still incarcerated when they received reprieves. Only about two dozen of the people pardoned followed the Mississippi Constitution’s requirement to publish a notice about their reprieves in their local newspapers for 30 days, said Hood, who wants the others invalidated. Barbour has said the pardons are valid and that he gave them because he’s a Christian and believes in second chances. Most of the people who could lose their pardons already have served their sentences and have been out of prison for years. Some of them were convicted of comparatively minor crimes as far back as the 1960s and 1970s and have never been in trouble again. Five of the pardoned are being held on a temporary restraining order issued by Hinds County Circuit Judge Tomie Green. The Supreme Court extended that order until it can rule on the matter. It set a hearing for

Environmental report on Bayou Pierre expected this year By Danny Barrett Jr. dbarrett@vicksburgpost.com A study to find any environmental impacts on Bayou Pierre if U.S. 61 is fourlaned through Port Gibson is expected to be presented this year, according to the Mississippi Department of

Transportation. The review, conducted since 2010 by Michael Baker Jr. Inc., will determine whether a straight shot through the city would result in a net rise in the stream, which runs near the north end of town. MDOT has not seen the study, but it is finished, said

Michael Arnemann, an assistant to Central District Commissioner Dick Hall. About $900,000 in state money was to be used to finance a design phase by this year, according to the agency’s Statewide Transportation Improvement Program for 2010-13. Use of state money exclu-

sively would not bind the agency to comply with federal laws protecting historic structures along Church Street. Preservationists are opposed to the entire plan, citing its effects on historic homes and live oak trees that line 61 in the center of town. Widening 61 is among the

County man, 74, charged with child’s rape A 74-year-old Vicksburg man was charged Wednesday with the statutory rape of a child younger than 16, Sheriff Martin Pace said. Donald Russell, 5125 Warriors Trail, was arrested at 3 p.m. when he voluntarily went to the Warren County Sheriff’s Department to speak with investigators Stacy Rollison and Todd Dykes, Pace said. Russell is not related to the victim, said the sheriff, but is an acquaintance of her family and is currently being charged with one incident, he said. Pace said the investigation began last week but would not disclose details, citing the need to protect the victim. Russell was being held in the Warren County Jail this morning without bond pending an initial hearing in justice court.

from staff reports was picked up at 10 a.m. at Halls Ferry Road and Marcus Street after an officer recognized him as the subject of a warrant, Stewart said. Bailey, along with a juvenile not identified because of his age, are accused of assaulting a 17-year-old in the 2700 block of Alma Street and stealing his Murray go-cart, valued at $600. The juvenile, 16, was arrested just after noon Sunday and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center, and the gocart was recovered. Bond was set at $50,000 for Bailey, but he was being held in the Warren County Jail because he was out on bond after a previous arrest for auto burglary and possession of a stolen weapon. He was indicted on the charges by the grand jury last week and is scheduled for trial Sept. 10. In a related incident, the juvenile, another 16-year-old and a 15-year-old are believed responsible for a residential burglary the same day in the 4900 block of Gibson Road, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said, and a 19-year-

City woman arrested in rented-TV scam A Vicksburg woman was charged Wednesday with embezzlement under contract, Capt. Bobby Stewart said. Shawanda Reynolds, 25, 168 Elizabeth Circle, is accused of renting a 42-inch Panasonic plasma TV from Rent-A-Center on March 3 and not making payments, Stewart said. Reynolds was arrested at 12:30 p.m., and released from the Warren County Jail at 5:45 after posting a $2,500 bond. The TV has not been recovered, said Stewart.

County man jailed for probation violation A Vicksburg man was jailed for probation violation Wednesday, jail records showed. Charles Bohanon, 60, 340 Youngton Road, was being held without bond.

A Warren County man remained in serious condition this morning at University Medical Center following a beating and robbery in Jackson Sunday afternoon that left him unconscious. Fred Jackson, 62, 627 Wright Road, suffered severe head injuries in the attack, and his condition had not improved but also had not worsened, his nephew Larry Jackson said today. Family members have said doctors believe Fred Jackson is responsive because his blood pressure rises when visitors enter his room, Larry Jackson said. The attack occurred while Fred Jackson was welding at Tri-Miss Services, a salvage yard at 416 Woodrow Wilson Drive, said his daughter, Sheila Hedrick. A surveillance video shows two men wearing hoodies entering the yard and coming up behind Fred Jackson, Jackson police spokesman Colendula Green said. His injuries include several skull fractures and severe head trauma, Hedrick said, and he was robbed of about $500 cash, a payroll check and his cell phone. A hospital spokesman said he remained in serious condition Wednesday, but said this morning that Fred Jackson was no longer listed as a patient. Green was not available this morning.

Charter schools, rainy day fund top Reeves’ agenda By Emily Wagster Pettus The Associated Press JACKSON — First-term Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves said Wednesday he’s supporting bills to create charter schools statewide and to require consolidating three school districts into one in Sunflower County. In announcing his 2012 legislative agenda, Reeves mentioned many items he and other Republicans discussed during campaigns last year. He said he wants legislators to improve state finances by limiting long-term debt and by resuming the practice of

putting 2 percent of state revenues into a rainy day fund — ideas that Republican Gov. Phil Bryant is also pushing. A state law enacted in the early 1990s says budget writers are supposed to spend no more than 98 percent of anticipated revenues. The unspent balance is supposed to go into the rainy day fund, which gives the state a financial cushion during hard times. Lawmakers have given themselves permission the past several years to ignore the 98 percent rule as the economy has struggled. They did so with the blessing of Bryant’s Republican prede-

cessor, Haley Barbour, who said he wanted the state to return to the rule as soon as possible. Reeves said Wednesday Tate that he wants Reeves to put new regulations on the way the attorney general hires private lawyers to file lawsuits on behalf of the state, which is an idea some Senate Republicans have pushed for years. Reeves said he also supports proposals aimed at tracking

information about adult males who impregnate underage girls. One bill that would do that, dubbed the “Child Protection Act,” has advanced through a House committee and awaits consideration by the entire House. It says if a girl 14 or younger receives an abortion, the abortion provider must save a sample of the fetal tissue so DNA tests could be run to determine whether the father is an adult — a determination that could lead to statutory rape charges. Charter schools are receiving in-depth attention this year, with Republicans con-

trolling both chambers of the Legislature for the first time since Reconstruction. The schools are public but they have greater flexibility to set different operating hours or different courses of study. Bryant has said for years that he believes charter schools could help students in impoverished areas, but critics say the charters could drain money and attention from other public schools. Some lawmakers propose allowing a limited number of charters by saying that only failing schools could be converted. Reeves is among

those who say charter schools should be allowed in any part of the state. Sunflower County is in the heart of the Delta, one of the poorest areas of the state. The three school districts there — Sunflower County, Indianola and Drew — all have been under state conservatorship for a variety of reasons. State Superintendent of Education Tom Burnham told the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday that he does not expect the Drew School District to emerge from conservatorship as a standalone district.

Federal judge reopens case against Forrest detention center HATTIESBURG — A federal judge has reopened a case filed against operations of the Forrest County Juvenile Detention Center. Lawyers for the county and the Southern Poverty Law Center, which brought the lawsuit, are at odds over the naming of an independent monitor. The monitor would keep track of the county’s progress on changes at the center. The county argues that SPLC’s choices for a monitor would be too expensive to transport to Forrest County, while the SPLC argues that the county’s local choices are under-qualified. Last March, the SPLC and Disability Rights Mississippi filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court to force the county to comply with federal law and provide the children at the center with access to lawyers and civil rights advocates. In April, the SPLC filed a suit challenging the conditions of confinement at the facility.

JACKSON — Leaders of Mississippi’s community college system said Wednesday that the 5.5 percent cut in their budget proposed by Gov. Phil Bryant could lead to higher tuition, bigger classes and more part-time instructors. They said any decrease in funding would only aggravate money problems the colleges have been struggling with, as the recession drove more students into classrooms at the same time state appropriations have fallen. “Obviously one of the things you consider is tuition,” said Dr. Clyde Muse, president of 13,600-student Hinds Community College, the state’s largest two-year institution.

Community college tuition, which averages $2,174 this year, grew nearly 50 percent from 2003 to 2010. Mississippi incomes, by one measure, grew about 30 percent. While the Legislature’s own budget proposes to hold community college funding level at $233.3 million, Bryant’s budget, released Tuesday, proposes $220.4 million. That’s the standard 5.5 decrease he wants for most state functions. The college system is asking for $314.8 million, including part of a long-promised funding increase, plus $11.5 million to add worker training for high school dropouts. Bryant said he wants to find a way to transfer to colleges more job training money that’s already collected through a tax on employers.

JACK VIX SAYS: More winter? We haven’t had any.

Outside counsel fight remains a political cold war STARKVILLE — The ongoing legislative battle over the so-called “outside counsel” or contingency fee law remains a political cold war between the state’s trial lawyers and the state’s business and medical interests — and it’s a story that has two sides. Tort reform opponents have consistently used the outside counsel issue as license to rail against the highly questionable activities of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in state judicial politics more than a decade ago. But in doing so, those same opponents just as consistently ignored the role of some of the state’s high profile trial lawyers in the escalation of a campaign finance arms race in Mississippi. To be clear, the U.S. Chamber wasn’t slinging wads of campaign cash around in Mississippi politics in 2000 until after a group called the Institute for Consumers and the Environment Political Action Committee was formed in the mid-1990s and began doing the same thing. ICEPAC was heavily funded by wealthy state trial lawyers like Dickie Scruggs and Paul Minor — both now disgraced and defrocked from the profession and serving federal prison sentences for judicial corruption. Both had profited mightily from the outside counsel system. The ICEPAC group promoted themselves as a political counterbalance to business, insurance and medical interests that had long lobbied lawmakers and made campaign contributions to influence public policy. But the new wealth

that many of ICEPAC’s patrons were using to fund the PAC came directly SID from legal fees gained from outside counsel contracts. In that era, it was a poorly kept secret at the state Capitol that Scruggs had — as later confirmed in the 2010 Curtis Wilkie book “The Fall of the House of Zeus” — quietly funded a push to amend a Medicaid bill to authorize the state to “employ legal counsel on a contingency basis” that created a system of having the state’s attorney general hire outside lawyers without input from the Legislature or the governor. Then there’s the fact that so many of the outside counsel attorneys chosen to represent the state since the 1994 law change also just happened to be among the largest campaign contributors both to the attorney generals passing out the contracts and to ICEPAC and directly to the campaigns who fit Scruggs’ “magic jurisdiction” vision for the judiciary. Remember that vision? Scruggs said in 2002 while serving on a panel at a national conference: “What I call the ‘magic jurisdiction,’ . . . [is] where the judiciary is elected with verdict money. The trial lawyers have established relationships with the judges that are elected;

And so, it’s a political force in their jurisdiction, and it’s almost impossible to get a fair trial if you’re a defendant in some of these places. The plaintiff lawyer walks in there and writes the number on the blackboard, and the first juror meets the last one coming out the door with that amount of money. . . . These cases are not won in the courtroom. They’re won on the back roads long before the case goes to trial. Any lawyer fresh out of law school can walk in there and win the case, so it doesn’t matter what the evidence or law is.” Such unbridled arrogance and avarice sent an engraved invitation to groups like the U.S. Chamber to meet political fire with fire on behalf of business and medical interests who might resent that kind of “magic.” But in truth, the historical tit-for-tat between the U.S. Chamber and ICEPAC is merely a smokescreen for the real issues at play here, which is whether any Mississippi’s attorney general — Republican or Democrat — should be able to negotiate these contracts without oversight and whether any AG can encumber or expend public lawsuit settlement funds for purposes not expressly approved by the Legislature. •

smart money Q: I know a young couple who are getting a place of their own. Would it be best for them to buy or rent? In the future they plan to move to another state, but not sure how far in the future this is. Whichever way they decide to go, rent or buy, they will need help monetarily. Any thoughts? — Grandmother in BRUCE Arizona A: Unhappily, there is no one-size-fits-all guideline. There are so many variables. If the young couple plans to move in a relatively short time, it’s a no-brainer: rent! You’re not locked in, you have no money invested and it’s pretty easy to move. Leases

can be broken. If they’re planning on being at this location for at least three years — preferably five years or more — in today’s depressed market, buying a home makes a lot of sense. This assumes that the couple has enough income to either put down at least 20 percent of the purchase price or put aside at least 20 percent for emergencies. If that’s the case, they must shop carefully and understand the neighborhood they’re moving into. Buying can be an arduous process. These are just a couple of the variables that have to be considered. So many people are looking for an easy, simple answer. Unhappily, few are available. •

A camera crew films the Vicksburg Performing Arts Company girls performing their Skechers inspired “Canon in Diva” Wednesday night.

Lambiotte said she and the dancers will know more once Skechers edits the video. T-KAM video, owned by Gene Moore of Jackson, was contracted by Skechers to shoot the video. “For us personally,” he said, “this is a big client.” As the camera crew was busy setting up, the girls had no problem practicing their hip-hop-style dance on the stage at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center and showing off their dance moves with the spinning shoes. Lambiotte said she was

introduced to the shoe in the fall when she was shopping at Frederick’s downtown for her two sons. She also was looking at girls’ shoes, said the mother of an infant daughter, “now that I have a little girl.” Frederick’s owner Norma Massey showed Lambiotte the spinning tennis shoes, and that’s where it all began. Lambiotte said she already had been working on a hiphop/classical number for her apprentice dance students and the shoe brought it together. In turn, Massey told the sales representative for Skechers “and from there it spread like wildfire.” The music for the dance is the classical Pachelbel Canon in D remixed with rap artist DJ Z Style. Lambiotte and the tiny dancers are calling it “Canon in Diva.” The girls said they dance four hours a week and aren’t

Continued from Page A1. Burks $9,701.59 in overtime hours accumulated between June 2009 and January 2011. At the time, interim human resources director Walterine Langford said Burks was eligible for the pay because her position was classified as a non-exempt employee who did not exercise independent judgment, meaning she was not a supervisor. “After numerous altercations that repeatedly resulted in Plaintiff not taking the money,” the suit says, “Mayor Winfield retaliated by trying to have Plaintiff’s position eliminated.” On Wednesday, Winfield called the suit “frivolous.” “I’m a family man — a happily married family man — and a father, and a leader in this community,” he said. “In America, everyone has a right to file a lawsuit. It’s unfortunate this is one of those types of things we will have to work through. I’m confident it will all be resolved in the end.” The suit also says Winfield became “physically abusive” toward Burks “toward the end of the Plaintiff’s employment.” In front of reporters Wednesday, Thames advised Winfield not to answer questions about the nature of the relationship. “It might make for an interesting fiction story, but it’s inaccurate,” Thames said. “I don’t think it would be appropriate to expound on lies and fairy tales.” Winfield said Burks “is a disgruntled ex-employee” who has aligned herself with “political enemies” of his administration. When asked who they were, he said it wouldn’t be appropriate to name them. However, issues between Burks and other city employ-

ees — usually deemed personnel matters — will come to light as part of his defense, Winfield said. Winfield has said Burks made statements to lawyers representing downtown property owners in a separate lawsuit filed in federal court in December that claims Winfield and other city officials harassed and intimidated the owners because they opposed Winfield’s election in 2009. The lawsuit gives Burks’ address as 717 Clay St., the building where Adolph Rose Antiques operates. Her Facebook page, however, says Burks, 38 and a Lake Providence native, lives in Southlake, Texas, outside Fort Worth. She could not be reached for comment. The suit says Winfield threatened Burks with criminal prosecution for fraud after she filed the EEOC complaint. A letter from Winfield’s personal attorney, Travis T. Vance Jr., to Monroe attorney Bobby R. Manning, filed as an exhibit with the lawsuit, shows Vance stating he was “personally looking into the issue of whether or not Ms. Burks committed fraud in her position with the City of Vicksburg wherein Ms. Burks signed and approved all of her overtime without proper knowledge and approval of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen.” In the letter, Vance asks Manning, said to be Burks’ personal attorney, to discuss the matter with her. Winfield said the matter was turned over to the Attorney General’s Office’s Public Integrity Division. The case filed Wednesday is before U.S. District Judge David C. Bramlette.

allowed to wear their spinning tennis shoes to school. “The playground has junk on it that would get our shoes dirty and it would clog them up,” said 8-yearold Caton Blackburn, the daughter of Jeb and Melissa Blackburn. Lambiotte said the girls had performed before at Holly Days, also at the SCHC; the Miss Mississippi trunk show; and at Tremaine, a dance competition in New Orleans.

Feb. 9 and said it would try to rule quickly. Barbour had no comment on the case. Hood was pleased with the court’s decision. “This is a good development that the Supreme Court will decide the seminal issue in this case regarding the 30-day publication,” Hood said in a statement Wednesday evening. Hood said he will present the high court a brief on Tuesday showing that “numerous other courts have ruled consistent with our interpretation.” Five men who worked as Governor’s Mansion trusties, four convicted killers and a man serving life for robbery, already were released by the time Hood sought the injunction. The judge told the trusties to contact corrections officials every 24 hours, but one of them missed a court hearing before he was served with a summons this week in Laramie, Wyo. The Supreme Court’s ruling means a lower court hearing on the matter won’t happen Friday. An attorney for some of the people who received pardons asked the Supreme Court to take the case.

“I can see her being a singer for the rest of her life,” she said. “She definitely has the voice for it, and she also has a very large heart for it.” Dobson and Ashley have also performed in several plays at Warren Central and Vicksburg Theatre Guild’s Fairy Tale Theater. Mike

Fast and furious U.S. No-Fly 74 soccer fans killed list doubles Justice, House GOP tangle in riot after Egypt game in one year over access to documents world WASHINGTON (AP) — Even as the Obama administration says it’s close to defeating al-Qaida, the size of the government’s secret list of suspected terrorists who are banned from flying to or within the United States has more than doubled in the past year, The Associated Press has learned. The no-fly list jumped from about 10,000 known or suspected terrorists one year ago to about 21,000, according to government figures provided to the AP. Most people on the list are from other countries; about 500 are Americans. The flood of new names began after the failed Christmas 2009 bombing of a Detroitbound jetliner. The government lowered the standard for putting people on the list, and then scoured its files for anyone who qualified. The government will not disclose who is on its list or why someone might have been placed on it. The surge in the size of the no-fly list comes even as the U.S. has killed many senior members of al-Qaida. That’s because the government believes the current terror threat extends well beyond the group responsible for the September 2001 attacks. “Both U.S. intelligence and law enforcement communities and foreign services continue to identify people who want to cause us harm, particularly in the U.S. and particularly as it relates to aviation,” Transportation Security Administrator John Pistole said. The Nigerian man who pleaded guilty in the Christmas 2009 attack over Detroit, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was listed in a large U.S. intelligence database that includes partial names and relatives of suspected terrorists.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department and Republicans on a House committee looking into a flawed gun-smuggling probe called Operation Fast and Furious appear headed for an impasse over congressional demands for internal Justice documents. The dispute is expected to be a prime topic at a hearing today, when Attorney General Eric Holder testifies before a panel whose chairman, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., alleges the Justice Department is engaging in a cover-up. Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has threatened to seek a contempt of Congress ruling against Holder for failing to turn over congressionally subpoenaed documents created after problems with Fast and Furious came to light. The attorney general “will be asked to explain his decision to withhold this factual evidence from investigators,” Issa said before the hearing. On Wednesday, Deputy Attorney General James Cole said the department will provide material created after Feb. 4, 2011, the day the department gave incorrect information to Congress about Fast and Furious.

Arizona House Speaker Andy Tobin, left, and Rep. David Burnell Smith speak about the Fast & Furious investigation at the Arizona Capitol in Phoenix. Cole said the department had made an exception to long-standing policy in order to provide material on how the erroneous Feb. 4 letter was created, but other documents about the congressional inquiries on Fast and Furious would not be turned over. A committee spokesman, Frederick Hill, said the department is under investigation for Fast and Furious but also for its response to whistleblowers and investigators who expressed concern about the operation. In his testimony prepared for today’s hearing, the attorney general said prior administrations have recognized

that robust internal communications would be chilled, and the executive branch’s ability to respond to oversight requests impeded, if internal communications concerning responses to congressional oversight were disclosed to Congress. In a Feb. 4, 2011, letter to Congress, the department said federal agents made every effort to intercept illegally purchased weapons. Instead, agents in the Phoenix-based Fast and Furious investigation employed a risky strategy called “gun-walking” in an effort to track the weapons after purchase.

CAIRO — A narrow stadium exit turned into a death trap. Crowds of Egyptian soccer fans fleeing supporters of the opposing team armed with knives, clubs and stones rushed into the corridor, only to be crushed against a locked gate, their rivals attacking from behind, survivors and witnesses said. The result was the world’s worst soccer violence in 15 years, with 74 people crushed, suffocated or stabbed to death. Many Egyptians, from the public to lawmakers, today blamed the police and the country’s ruling military for failing to prevent the rioting the night before in the Mediterranean coastal city of Port Said.

Russia refuses to stop arms sales to Syria BEIRUT — Russia will not stop selling arms to Syria, a top defense official said today, as Moscow stands by its longtime ally despite mounting international condemnation over the Syrian regime’s bloody crackdown on a 10-month-old uprising. Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said his country is not violating any international obligations by selling weapons to Damascus.

Serbia: 11,000 trapped in villages by snow BELGRADE, Serbia — At least 11,000 villagers have been trapped by heavy snow and blizzards in Serbia’s mountains, authorities announced today, as the death toll from Eastern Europe’s weeklong deep freeze rose to 114. Twenty more deaths were reported in Ukraine today, with nine more in Poland and one more each in Serbia and the Czech Republic.

But as Chris Crawford’s last gasp 3-pointer clanged off the rim, bounced harmlessly out of bounds and the Golden Eagles’ student section stormed the court, the junior point guard felt an even greater sense of accomplishment following the 75-72 victory on Wednesday night. Sidelines Irsay: Manning decision will wait

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jim Irsay is putting the Peyton Manning decision on hold. The Colts owner said Wednesday he will monitor Manning’s recovery from Sept. 8 neck surgery over the next month and may wait until the last possible moment to determine whether to pay the quarterback a $28 million roster bonus, redo the fiveyear contract he signed last summer or risk losing the four-time MVP as a free agent. “It’s two-phased. There’s the medical aspect, as to whether he can play at a really high level and that’s the only place he wants to be. Can he drill it in Foxboro in 10 degrees, 50 yards, that sort of thing,” Irsay told a small group of reporters. “The second issue has always been his health and the risks of going back onto the field. When the Super Bowl ends, he and I will continue to talk about it.” Just two days after Irsay said he wouldn’t talk about Manning again this week, he broke that embargo and discussed the ongoing overhaul of the franchise. Since Jan. 2, Irsay has fired vice chairman Bill Polian, general manager Chris Polian, coach Jim Caldwell and most of Caldwell’s staff.

End of an era for Vicksburg football Former coach Alonzo Stevens bids farewell to final class of college signees By Jeff Byrd jbyrd@vicksburgpost.com On national signing day on Wednesday, former Vicksburg High football coach Alonzo Stevens said goodbye to his final five players to sign college letters of intent. Three landed with East Mississippi Community College, including the prolific passing duo of quarterback Cameron Cooksey and A.J. Stamps. On B2 Complete list of LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Southern Miss signees the National Junior College Athletic Association championship in December. They were joined by outside linebacker Eli Brown. Hinds Community College signed two Gator linemen, tackles Norman Price (6-foot4, 300 pounds) and Jeramey Hill (6-foot-3, 260 pounds). Stevens, who retired in

December after 11 years as Vicksburg’s coach and another 20 as an assistant at Vicksburg and Alcorn State, was elated to see his last class sign with successful programs. “This is it, and I’m very proud today,” Stevens said. “These guys have a lot of football left. Not only do I think they will be successful at the junior college level, but they will be able to move on to another level. I think Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Southern Miss all missed out.” For most of the 2011 season,

Cooksey was one of the national leaders in passing. He took nearly every career and season passing record for Warren County in the process. In 2011, he completed 229 of 418 passes for 3,245 yards with 38 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Despite impressive numbers and a good showing at last July’s Mel Kiper Jr.’s National 7-on-7 Championships in Virginia, Cooksey did not get a single Division I offer. Instead, he landed with the reigning national champions. Cooksey hopes to follow the

path of former starting quarterback Bo Wallace to the Southeastern Conference. Wallace signed in December with Ole Miss. “I definitely thought about how he (Wallace) succeeded in his one year at East Mississippi and is now at Ole Miss,” Cooksey said. “It shows me a path to the next level.” Just eight years ago, East Mississippi was a laughingstock in the MACJC. Early signing period needed in college football Fax machines at college football offices all over the country have whirred for the final time. The final hat or other prop showing the college destination of the five-star, can’tmiss Youtube sensation has been used. The last letter of intent has been signed, save a few holdouts. National signing day, a holiday for college football fans, is finally over, but yet the real process of player development is just beginning. Some recruits drag out their decision, changing their minds 10 or 11 times. Some just want to take fun visits to different schools even when they’ve made their decision. They’re 18-year-olds, after all. But what about those who don’t, like Warren Central

STEVE WILSON

POST SPORTS EDITOR

punter/kicker Devon Bell, who remained loyal to the first school that offered him, Mississippi State, throughout the process? An early signing period during the summer would be a perfect remedy and it might cut down on a lot of the drama and the hype for many recruits. Speaking of drama, things have ramped up to insane levels, necessitating an early

signing period. College football recruiting has morphed into an allconsuming amoeba, fed by the Internet and the 24-hour news cycle. Once upon a time, coaches evaluated and recruited in a vacuum, able to find an unearthed gem without so much as a peep to the outside world. Fans were content to find out their haul at the end of the process. Not anymore. Thanks to fan interest, recruiting became more than a offseason holdover until spring football. First there were 1-900 numbers giving information on recruits. That got expensive quickly. Then the Internet with a trio of recruiting websites — Rivals.com, Scout. com and now, 247sports.com — made recruiting into a national obsession.

The three sites gave us a new lexicon: the soft verbal commitment. The hard verbal. The unofficial visit. The official visit. We got links to YouTube highlight videos, the recruit’s 40-yard dash time and how much he squatted and bench-pressed. News conferences are held to announce a recruit’s destination, something that gives 18-year-olds a level of attention they’re probably not prepared to handle. It’s easy to get sucked into this hype machine that leaves nothing but carnage in its wake. But what about the guys who already have made up their minds? Since the process is so involved and they get five official visits each, why not visit Next State U. for a fun, free outing even

though your heart is set on State U? The process forces coaching staffs to try to retain their own commits and gives them the opportunity to try to poach a few from the rivals. It also forces schools to waste precious recruiting dollars on visits for players who won’t sign there. An early signing period would end that and allow recruits, like Bell, who aren’t going anywhere else, to avoid getting texts and calls from other coaching staffs. It’s a situation where anything that limits the madness is a good thing. •

USM Continued from Page B1. missed a deep 3-pointer just before the buzzer. Southern Miss has won 16 of 17 games dating back to Nov. 26. Dodson came off the bench to ignite the Golden Eagles’ offense, making 7 of 16 shots from the field and 9 of 9 from the free-throw line. LaShay Page added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Memphis (15-7, 6-2) was led by Crawford’s 23 points while Will Barton added 15. Memphis lost for just the second

time in 11 games. “All you can ask for is a chance to win or tie the game and we had two chances,” Memphis coach Josh Pastner said. “I was very proud at how we competed. You’ve got to give Southern Miss credit because they stepped up and made free throws.” The second half was close throughout, with neither team taking more than a fivepoint lead. Southern Miss was terrific at the free-throw

line all night, hitting 24 of 27, and the Golden Eagles needed nearly every one of them. Dodson and Watson hit several clutch free throws in the final moments, but Memphis kept responding with big buckets until Crawford’s 3-pointer smacked the front of the rim and bounced out of the reach of his teammates. “It’s very rewarding because we caught their A-plus game in my opinion,”

Southern Miss coach Larry Eustachy said. “We guarded them really well and they made some shots we had no answer for.” Crawford was wide open on the final shot, albeit a few feet behind the 3-point line, and there was no one Memphis would have rather had shooting the ball. The sophomore’s 23 points were a career high and he finished 9 of 15 from the field, including 5 of 7 from behind the arc.

Southern Miss has pushed its way into NCAA Tournament consideration with its hot start, including wins over Ole Miss and Arizona State, but the Memphis win might be the biggest of them all. Despite the Tigers’ lengthy winning streak in the series, the games have been extremely close in recent years, with Memphis winning the past six games by a combined 21 points. This one was no different.

Memphis took an early 16-4 lead thanks largely to a hotshooting Crawford. He came into the game averaging just 8.5 points, but scored 18 in the first half, showcasing a quick release while making 4 of 5 3-pointers. But Southern Miss slowly fought back, taking a 31-30 lead on a Torye Pelham 3-pointer with 1:44 remaining in the first half.

at Ole Miss to replace Houston Nutt. Price said Hinds, which made the MACJC playoffs, was a good fit. “I probably could have signed with one of the bigger schools, but I didn’t want to sit and wait,” Price said. “I feel like I need to tone up some things because I missed those five games. I want to come into Hinds, get focused and be an asset to the team.” Hill had a scholarship offer

to Mississippi Delta, but he felt he needed more time to recover from a torn rotator cuff. “I’ll take a grayshirt year at Hinds and that will allow me to fully heal and be ready by the following fall,” Hill said. “Hinds has shown a lot of progression with its program and they are in line to win a championship.” The one changeup on signing day was Port Gibson safety Adarius Barnes, who signed with Louisiana Tech

despite being verbally committed to Mississippi State for most of the season. Port Gibson coach Lynn Lang said Barnes will help the Bulldogs. “He’s dynamic, fast and very athletic,” Lang said. “He’s definitely going to bring his speed to the table. We’re getting the program back to where it needs to be and I feel that Adarius is paving the way for our next group behind him.”

Vicksburg Continued from Page B1. River assistant Buddy Stephens changed all of that. “I was really impressed with what I saw at East,” Cooksey said. “I was offered pretty early by Mississippi Delta, but I always had East as my first choice. Their facilities are top notch and I also like the coaches.” A sparkling new stadium and modern fieldhouse were big selling points for Stamps and Brown as well. “East Mississippi was a better fit for me than Gulf

Coast,” Stamps said. “The football facilities are tremendous and I was able to build a good relationship with the coaching staff.” Like Cooksey, Stamps rewrote many of the Warren County receiving records in his three years with the Gators. In 2011, he caught a county-record 77 passes for 1,219 yards and 19 touchdowns. He was also a standout in the defensive secondary with two interceptions. He said either side of the

Boxing Muhammad Ali’s trainer dies at 90 Angelo Dundee, the brilliant motivator who worked the corner for Muhammad Ali in his greatest fights and willed Sugar Ray Leonard to victory in his biggest bout, died in Tampa, Fla. He was 90. The genial Dundee was best known for being in Ali’s corner for almost his entire career, but those in boxing also knew him as an ambassador for boxing and a figure of integrity in a sport that often lacked it. He died with his family surrounding him, said son Jimmy Dundee, but not before being able to attend Ali’s 70th birthday bash in Louisville, Ky., last month.

The Vicksburg Post

Caretakers should address patient by name Dear Abby: “She Has a Name in Georgia” (Dec. 2) complained that the care staff at the assisted living community where her mother lives calls her “Granny,” “Grandma” and “Mamma.” She found it disrespectful, and I agree with her. I am an R.N. with two advanced nursing degrees. Calling a resident “Granny,” “Dear” or “Honey” is not loving or caring. It is degrading, humiliating and hurtful. It does not matter what the ethnicity of the attendant is; there are standards of conduct and patient’s rights. I suggest She Has a Name ask the director of the facility for copies of the standards of care and patient’s rights documents. The family may want to install a “nanny cam” in the room if it will provide peace of mind. There are many fine communities where care of the residents is professionally and caringly provided. I hope they are able to find one for their mother. — Retired R.N. and Resident Advocate Dear R.N.: Thank you for

DEAR ABBY ABIGAIL

VAN BUREN

sharing your expertise on this subject. I didn’t realize patient’s rights were specified by the documents you mentioned or that how a resident is addressed is covered in them. Other health care professionals responded similarly, and I stand corrected. My newspaper readers comment: Dear Abby: During school and in clinical rotations, we were repeatedly instructed to call clients by their names, especially in situations where memory was impaired. Not only does it help to reorient the patients as to who they are and help them to maintain their identity, but it provides a clear separation as to who is family and who is the caregiver.

The director should not have diminished the importance of the family’s feelings on this matter. I suggest they consider relocating their mother to a facility that is more conscientious. — Caregiver in Florida Dear Abby: The assisted living staff should not be calling her mother by those names. The legal term is “elder speak,” or as it is commonly known — baby talk. It is detrimental to her care and contributes to “ageism,” a process in which elders are perceived as less valuable than others. The family was right to speak up and, regardless of cultural considerations, the staff should respect their wishes and refer to their mother by her appropriate name. — Shocked R.N. in Calgary, Canada Dear Abby: Failure to address a patient/resident by his or her proper name is a violation of regulations and could be cited during surveys. If the patient preferred a nickname, the care plan conference team needed to make a notation in the care plan.

Most of this is covered by the Patient’s Bill of Rights and falls under the “right to be treated with respect and dignity.” Using terms like “Sweetie” or “Granny” is a symptom of the staff’s failure to respect the patient’s individuality. — Respectful Geriatric Nurse Dear Abby: In Michigan, health care professionals are expected to call patients by name. In fact, my nephew was once called into his boss’s office at the hospital and reprimanded when she overheard him say to a patient, “I’ll show you the way to the X-ray unit, Grandma.” He was forgiven when he explained that the patient he was escorting was actually his real grandmother! — Just Call Me By Name •

Proper gear, stretching can minimize sports injuries Dear Doctor K: My teenage son plays several school sports. He loves them, but I’m concerned about sports injuries. Dear Reader: Playing sports is a great way for your teen to get regular exercise, meet other teens and learn teamwork. Of course, kids can get injured while playing sports. Fortunately, the risk of serious injury is low. That’s not a reason to prohibit your son from playing sports, but it is a good reason to make sure he plays safely. Many sports injuries can be avoided, and there’s a lot that you — and your son — can do to help him stay safe. First, make sure your teen has the proper equipment for the sport he is playing. This

includes safety gear such as kneepads, goggles, wrist pads, shin guards, mouth guards, helmets, elbow pads and proper footwear. Make sure that his equipment fits correctly. You might also talk to his coach to be sure he uses the equipment. Your teen also needs to warm up and stretch before every practice session or game. Muscles that have not been used in a while tend to

be injured more easily. Your teen should first do some light aerobic exercise, such as jogging or jumping jacks, for five to 10 minutes. Then he should spend a few minutes stretching all of his muscles. Even if your son follows this advice, he still might get injured. If he is, it is critical that he takes time off to allow that injury to heal. Playing too soon increases the chance for re-injury. Get advice from his doctor or team trainer on when he can return. When your teen is playing informally, there’s no coach around to make sure he’s following all of the safety precautions we’ve talked about. That’s when the chance of injury is the highest. The hardest part of getting a

teenager to take safety precautions, of course, is that teenagers think they’re immortal. If they’re not worried about getting hurt, how can you convince them to take precautions? Most teenagers care above all about being part of a group. They may not worry about getting hurt, but they surely worry about not being able to play. So stress that. Make sure your son realizes that if he is injured, he’ll have to watch his friends from the sideline. And if he plays hurt, the injury could worsen — and then he’ll have to watch from the sideline for a long time. •

TWEEN 12 & 20

BY DR. ROBERT WALLACE • NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE ASSOCIATION Dr. Wallace: I read in your column that a dermatologist told you that no suntan is good for the recipient! That might be true, but every girl I know thinks that a tan makes a girl more attractive and makes her look healthy. Who wants to look as white as a sheet? I want to look cool now as a 17-year-old, young woman. I really don’t care that when I’m 50, I’ll have more wrinkles than the lady who looked like an albino when she was a teen. I believe in living for the moment. You give good advice about sex, drugs, booze and tobacco products, but you are “burned out” when it comes to tanning. It could be that looking healthy is a girl thing. If so, then I forgive you. — Nameless, Vicksburg Nameless: When it comes to this health issue, I can only give you these facts from a dermatologist: When the sun or a tanning booth changes the pigment in the skin to a darker color, damage has been caused. It’s up to the readers to decide what is best for them, but I do feel much

better that you have forgiven me. Thanks. Dr. Wallace: I’ve been seeing Roberto for about seven months. When we are alone, he is a great guy. He is sweet, kind, gentle and treats me like a princess. He also has a lot of guy friends. When I’m with him and he’s with his buddies, he treats me like a slave. If I don’t jump at his command, he threatens me. When we are alone I ask him why he is so mean, and he says that he has to keep up his tough image to his friends. They talk to their women the same way. I know these guys are just trying to be macho, but I don’t like to be treated this way. What should I do? — Rosa, Nogales, Ariz. Rosa: Don’t allow yourself to be humiliated by a guy who is trying to be Mr. Tough. Leslie Carter — The sister of Aaron Carter and former Backstreet Boy Nick Carter has died in upstate New York at 25. A publicist for the Carter family confirmed the death, but provided no details Wednesday on where or how she died. A statement from the family says they’re grieving for Carter and requested “the utmost privacy.” Carter’s single “Like Wow” was on the soundtrack for “Shrek” in 2001. In 2006, she appeared in all eight episodes of the reality show “House of Carters.”

Amy Winehouse coroner resigns The coroner who oversaw the inquest into the death of singer Amy Winehouse has resigned after her qualifications were questioned, officials said Wednesday — raising the possibility the investigation may have to be held again. Winehouse’s relatives said they were still absorbing the implications of the news and were seeking legal advice. In October, Suzanne Greenaway had ruled that the soul singer had died from accidental alcohol poisoning. Greenaway had been appointed an assistant deputy coroner in London in 2009 by her husband, Coroner Andrew Reid. But she resigned in November after authorities learned she had not been a registered U.K. lawyer for five years as required. She had practiced law for a decade in her native Australia. “I appointed my wife as an assistant deputy Amy coroner as I believed at the time that her exWinehouse perience as a solicitor and barrister in Australia satisfied the requirements of the post,” he said in a statement Wednesday. “In November of last year it became apparent that I had made an error in the appointment process and I accepted her resignation.” Greenaway oversaw 12 inquests in Camden, the north London borough where Winehouse lived, and others in eastern London. Reid said he was “confident that all of the inquests handled were done so correctly” — but offered to hold the inquests over again if the families of the deceased wanted it. Winehouse’s family said it had not yet decided what to do. In a statement, the family said it was “taking advice on the implications of this and will decide if any further discussion with the authorities is needed.” A security guard found Winehouse dead in bed July 23 at her home in the north London neighborhood of Camden. The 27-year-old singer, known for her beehive hairdos and multiple Grammy-winning album “Back to Black,” had battled drug and alcohol addiction for years. At the October inquest, Greenaway delivered a verdict of “death by misadventure,” saying the singer suffered accidental alcohol poisoning when she resumed drinking after weeks of abstinence.

Journey drummer arrested in Oregon Deen Castronovo, drummer in the rock group Journey, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Oregon to four misdemeanor charges related to a reported domestic violence incident in West Salem. The 47-year-old was arrested Jan. 20 after a dispute with a woman and charged with recklessly endangering another person, interfering Deen with making a police report, criminal mischief Castronovo and harassment. The woman told police he had accused her of cheating and they had broken up.

Woman gives birth after traffic stop A woman’s speeding got her a warning from an Ohio state trooper but wasn’t enough to keep her grandchild from being born in her car. Donna Richmond got pulled over on Tuesday morning as she was trying to rush her daughter to a Columbus hospital. She said that the State Highway Patrol officer told her she was going 90 mph. That’s when daughter Debbie Richmond said she screamed from the front passenger seat, “I’m in labor!” The trooper let them go with the warning. But the delay from the traffic stop kept them from reaching the hospital in time, so Debbie Richmond gave birth to a daughter in her mother’s Hyundai. The father, Randall Altman, said he was in the back seat “freaking out.”

Lisa Marie Presley stands next to her childhood crib displayed with other mementos at Graceland in Memphis.

Lisa Marie Presley wants to make better Elvis film MEMPHIS (AP) — Over the years, Lisa Marie Presley has become dissatisfied with movies chronicling her father’s life, so she just might make a film about the rock ’n’ roll icon. The daughter of Elvis Presley said she has been in talks about a movie, though she didn’t offer a timetable. “There’s not been anything done properly with him yet, you know, that has satisfied me in terms of capturing everything,” she told The Associated Press. “It will happen, though.” Presley, who rarely gives interviews, was at Graceland this week to attend the opening of a new exhibit. Elvis Through His Daughter’s Eyes is a personal look at Lisa Marie and includes her baby shoes, her first record player and a small white fur coat — touchstones from her days living at Graceland, her father’s longtime Memphis home until his death Aug. 16, 1977. This year marks the 35th anniversary of Elvis’ death, which is observed each August with a weeklong gathering of fans in Memphis. Officials anticipate as many as 75,000 people, the number that showed up in 2007 for the 30th

Groundhog ‘predicts’ 6 more weeks of winter PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his lair to “see” his shadow today, in the process predicting six more weeks of winter. But, at this rate, that might not be so bad. The groundhog made his “prediction” on Gobbler’s Knob, a tiny hill in the town for which he’s named about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Temperatures were near freezing when he emerged at dawn — unseasonably warm — and were forecast to climb into the mid-40s in a winter that’s brought little snow and only a few notably cold days to much of the East. Today’s ceremony is largely that: Phil’s prediction is determined ahead of time by the Inner Circle, a group who dons top hats and tuxedos and decides in advance what the groundhog will predict. Organizers expected 15,000 to 18,000 people to witness the furry creature’s prognostication ceremony just before 6:30 a.m. This year’s crowd was warmer than most. The average early-morning temperature usually hovers around 17 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett was among the spectators this year. Those who couldn’t make it to Gobbler’s Knob could follow on Twitter and Facebook, or watch a webcast of the event on his website. The Groundhog Day celebration is rooted in a German superstition that says if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on Feb. 2, the Christian holiday of Candlemas, winter, will last another six weeks.

anniversary. Presley lived at Graceland until she was 5, which is when her mother, Priscilla, divorced E lv i s a n d Elvis moved with Presley Lisa Marie to California. She continued to visit Graceland, and she smiles when talking about the time spent with her dad, such as when they would ride a golf cart through the neighborhood together. She recalled waiting for her father to make his daily entrance down the stairs. “He was always fully, fully geared up. You’d never see him in his pajamas coming down the steps, ever,” she said. “You’d never see him in anything but ‘ready to be seen’ attire.” Lisa Marie has spent much of the past few years taking care of her 3-year-old twin daughters she had with husband Michael Lockwood. She has two children from a previous marriage to musician Danny Keough, which ended in 1994. She also was married to actor Nicholas Cage and pop star Michael Jackson.
