Editorial: As many of the members are now aware I will be stepping down at the 2017 A.G.M. after about 9 years in this position. I have enjoyed the experience and learnt many things along the way. I would like to thank those that have helped, especially Vic Loughran, and all those that contributed articles. When I started as editor, although I was quite computer literate and had been involved with the development of tender documents and technical data sheets, I had no magazine experience. But over the years I believe I have brought the magazine into the 21st Century and made my mark and leave it to another now to make their mark. Sheila Fox together with Klara have taken an interest in continuing the magazine with my help over the coming months, please give them your support and encouragement. Regards

President’s Letter Sadly we have had to say our final farewell to Ian Ingram who helped run the Whist group with his wife Lin and also helped the drama group with scenery, our thoughts are with Lin and family at this sad time. Many of us have had family over in August, I think it has not been nearly as hot this year or as humid. As I write this letter we are still waiting for the lift to be delivered at the club, hopefully by the time you read this it will have been delivered and working! This month is the start of busy months for the Club, all the groups recommence, usually we have our Welcome Back Party but we have had to postpone it to October as so many of the Committee are away at the end of September but we will still have a party this month, it being Linda Shelley's 60th, there will be music but bring finger food only please and Linda would like your presence not presents! Joan is taking the annual trip to the Lakes. We are hoping to take a coach to Benahavis proms but I have not as yet been able to find any start times, hopefully by the time you read this I will have all the information required. Please inform myself or any of the Committee if you have any trip suggestions. Sue

SAD NEWS We regret to inform you of the passing of Ian Ingram, a long standing member of the Club. Our sympathies go out to Lin, their family and friends.

Many long standing members will remember a former club member Marjory Rodriguez who died on the 18th May. The funeral took place at Guildford Crematorium on the 10th June. PLEASE NOTE: The Estepona Tourist Office is now located in Plaza de las Flores at the usual timetable. Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 15:30 h. Saturday from 10:00 to 14:00 h. There is no longer a tourist office at the Port.

FAREWELL TO SHEILA AND REG ASTLE The International Club of Estepona said a sad goodbye to long standing members Sheila and Reginald Astle. VicePresident Joan Thompson presented them with a Voucher for use in the UK and a Bottle of Cava. The Club was founded in 1988 and they have been members since its inception. Reg was the first editor of the Clubs monthly magazine and he was also the organiser until recently of the Bowling Group which meets every Monday. They have decided to return to Cheshire to live close to family, the club wishes them all the best for the future. AND FAREWELL FROM THE BOWLERS Many of the Monday bowlers also collected for a voucher presented to Reg on his very last attendance at the bowls club. It was a sad moment for Reg to be leaving and we wished him all the best and for his wife Sheila. Reg had lead the bowling group for many years and introduced many to the game who had never played before. It was always a bit of a giggle when his counters appeared to pick teams for the morning as many were missing and only Reg could work it out! The bowls group will continue on a Monday morning please see below. Why not come along. We are a very sociable group and would welcome regular bowlers or novices. BOWLING OUR WAY! After a break for the summer bowling will recommence on Monday 5th September. We meet Monday mornings at Benavista Bowls Club. It is quite a sociable morning why not come and join us? 9.45am for 10.00 start, 16 ends for just 8€ each, with a coffee break after 8 ends, price includes hire of woods if required. Dress code is predominately white but the critical factor is footwear, shoes must be smooth soled with no ’pimples or crinkles’. The Management at Benavista strictly apply this rule. Drinks and food available at the bar at very reasonable prices. Beginners, novices or your guests are always welcome. We have recently had new bowlers join us and given instruction during the mornings play, we are not serious bowlers, just out for a mornings enjoyment, fresh air and exercise. Audrey Jinks and Terry Smith are sharing the organising following Reg’s departure. 7

NOT FOR ANYONE OF A NERVOUS DISPOSITION OR FOR SUFFERERS OF VERTIGO. This is the Eshima Ohashi bridge in Japan that women drivers avoid as well as many male drivers. It’s the third largest rigidframe bridge in the world at 44 metres tall. And judging by its looks, it would also probably qualify as the world’s scariest too. The mile-long bridge was built on the banks of Lake Nakaumi, connecting the cities of Matsue and Sakaiminato. If you’re wondering why it looks more like a roller coaster (or should I say, road-er coaster) than a bridge, it’s because it was designed to be high enough to let ships pass underneath. It has a gradient of 5.1 percent on the Tottori Prefecture side and 6.1 percent on the Shimane Prefecture side, making its slope look like the apex of a roller coaster. In addition to wearing a seatbelt, you might want to have your brakes checked and plenty of deep tyre tread just in case it is raining before using this bridge. Nervous drivers and smooth tyre tread strictly not recommended. Never mind coming down you would need a good engine to get up. Submitted by Audrey Jinks AND CLOSER TO HOME THE WINDSOR BRIDGE AT THE UPPER ROCK NATURE RESERVE, GIBRALTAR. The attraction opened this year and is free to visitor’s and forms part of the thrill seekers trail in the Upper Rock and part of the rebranding and innovative addition to the Nature Reserve. The bridge is located between two batteries and spans a 50 metre gorge, bridge length is 71 metre long. The bridge feels like it is moving which is to be expected. The nature reserve has been cleared of over growth and debris on walkways and around the areas heritage sites. Picnic and rest areas are now created. Located between two Batteries and constructed over a 50 metre gorge, the bridge is 71 metre long. The main structure was assembled off site in Spain. The project involved anchoring and foundation works, which were carried out by a firm that specialises in suspension bridges. The main structure of the bridge was assembled off site in nearby Spain. The bridge can be accessed via Royal Anglian Way or by a new path from the Queen’s Lookout. 9

PAST EVENTS Thursday 28th July - Away Day Lunch As the club kitchen is closed during the summer it is a great idea to have a number of away day lunches and to try different restaurants. On this occasion Enrique’s Bistro at Villacana was chosen and 25 members attended. Maggie had arranged a choice of three meals to choose from and all were large portions including the starters. The meals were excellent, and for those that already knew Enrique would know that the service could not be faulted. Really nice restaurant and the views from the elevated terrace, looking over the swimming pool to the sea, are great. Well done and thanks Maggie for once again choosing an ideal venue, and those that have never been the restaurant is well worth a visit. Large choice of three courses from the Spanish and Mediterranean menu, menu del dia or al la carte. I.C.E. Golf Society. Here are some important dates for your diaries: July Away Day to La Cala. Fewer than usual were able to play Campo America at La Cala Golf Resort, me being one unable to play. I am informed by my deputy, Jan Blind, that despite a little rain, some good scores were returned. Taking the honours was Andrea Pegrum with 35 points followed closely by Steve McMurtry, (winning absolutely nothing). Many thanks to Jan for stepping up. September Away Day to Dona Julia. Again my sincere thanks to Jan Blind for organising our September Away Day to Dona Julia Golf Club. Arranged for 14th September the deal at 55€ includes: Green free, Buggy and Barbeque. The first tee time being 10.00am. We already have 10 players but there is space for at least 2 more. Please let me know as soon as possible if you wish to participate. Autumn Cup at Valle Romano Golf Resort. On the 4th October we return to the outstanding and ever popular golf resort of Valle Romano for our Autumn Cup. The entry form is on the club notice board so please get your name down early. The green fee will be 69€, approximately ( this being dependant upon the final number of entrants) and includes a shared buggy. The entry fee is 5€. The format, as usual, will be individual stableford, with a shot gun start at 08.45am. The Presentation Lunch, this year, will be at The Brasserie de Arturo at The Casares Golf Club. Details and tickets will be available shortly from Peter Henry. November Away Weekend. Peter Henry has arranged this two night trip to Monte Castillo Golf Resort of Jerez. The total price for all of the golf, Hotel and breakfast is £84. Evening meals are available at extra cost. My sincere thanks to Peter for all of his hard work. 'Casares Costa Golf Club Roll-Up’. We play a twice weekly 'Roll-Up' stableford competition on Tuesdays and Fridays at Casares Golf Club where our members benefit from discounted green fees. The tee off time varies a little during the year and is currently 8.30am. Please arrive between 8.00 and 8.15. All levels are welcome and we often have as many as 12 or more taking part. It is all very light hearted, (in other words 'Cut Throat’) and it is worth putting your sense of humour in the bag! Our annual 'Order of Merit' trophy is awarded to the player with the best ten cards from these 'Roll-Ups' . Keep your eye on the club magazine and the web site for details of all activities. The guided tour of 10 or more costs £5 per person and takes about one and a half hours to two hours depending on questions asked. The tea, of course, is not compulsory but very recommendable and will end your afternoon beautifully. Any ICE members who would like to join us would be made very welcome. How Could Brexit Affect British Expatriates? By Terry Wayne, Partner, Blevins Franks 952 799 752 terry.wayne@blevinsfranks.com While most UK nationals will be affected by Brexit in some way, expatriates living in the EU have much more at stake. Will you have a right to stay in Spain? Will you be able to continue enjoying the benefits you do today? No-one can be sure what will happen next. However, we can offer peace of mind about some key concerns. Nothing should change for two years or more Right now, nothing has changed for expatriates following the Brexit vote. Britain remains a full EU member so you can continue enjoying the benefits of living in Spain as before. This is likely to be the case for at least two years – and hopefully longer – so you should have plenty of time to prepare for changes before they affect you. Your benefits should continue under new agreements Spain is the EU country that hosts the largest number of British nationals outside the UK, at almost 310,000. Contributing as much as they do to the Spanish economy, the authorities will want Spain to stay an attractive place for Britons to invest and relocate. They will also want to protect the interests of the thousands of Spanish nationals living in the UK. Meanwhile, new British Prime Minister, Theresa May, has continued to confirm her commitment to secure the rights of British nationals living in EU countries. It is very likely, then, that new agreements will be put in place to maintain reciprocal residency rights for UK nationals in Spain and EU nationals in Britain. These arrangements may also extend existing benefits, such as healthcare, but we will need to wait and see what happens here. It may be that good private health insurance becomes more important in due course. You should not be taxed differently Double tax treaties, like the one between the UK and Spain, are independent of the EU, so your existing tax treatment will stay the same. The UK already has treaties with non-EU countries, like Australia, the US and Norway. While Brexit will not affect taxation of Spanish residents, non-residents may have higher taxes to pay in the future. This will apply where Spain charges more for non-EU and non-EEA residents, as happens now with non-residents income tax. Also, non-EU or EEA residents may not qualify for the generally lower rates offered by the regional autonomous communities for wealth tax and succession and gift tax. Diversification can weather any storm As for investments, Brexit should have little impact for expatriates with a suitably diversified portfolio and whose interests are not overexposed to UK assets. You can minimise risk – Brexit-related or otherwise – with a portfolio that is diversified by currency, region, asset type and market sector. You could also choose investment structures that allow currency flexibility so you can convert between sterling and euros when the rates are most favourable. Now has never been a better time to build a good relationship with a locally-based financial adviser who can keep you informed of developments that affect you specifically as an expatriate. They can help you plan if and when you need to take action to continue enjoying your chosen lifestyle in Spain, whatever Brexit brings. To keep in touch with the latest developments in the offshore world, check out the latest news on our website www.blevinsfranks.com 25

Trigeminal Neuralgia Many members are aware that Sandy, Margaret Clark and I suffer from a vicious disease that is not fatal but is known as the Suicide disease as so many sufferers decide they cannot live any longer with it. Its been likened to a red-hot poker inserted into your cheek and turned. Imagine an electric shock hitting your cheek again and again and again, or being woken up with a dream of a dentist drilling into all your teeth at once without anaesthetic, this is when the burning starts and the tissues in your face swell and make it difficult to speak. Of course eating solid food is out of the question, many sufferers are slim. This is all caused by the Trigeminal Nerve that sits just above the ear, with me its the left side of my face that suffers. Trigeminal means three, one branch of the nerve to the forehead one to the cheek and then on down to the mouth. I have had various surgical procedures but it always comes back, there is one procedure that has success it works by boring into the brain behind the ear, I am not brave enough for that. I have it under control for the moment with a drug called Pregabalina. At 150mg twice a day, this drug is used for epilepsy, it works on the nerve and I pray it carries on working for me. Matters September 2016 Free Audiobooks Free audio versions of books which have passed into the public domain are available from www.librivox.org. Among the books are classics from Shakespeare, Jane Austin, Geoffrey Chaucer and Charles Dickens. These can be downloaded and transferred to your phone or tablet. I wish I hadn’t done that!! How often are you working in a windows application e.g. Word processer or spread sheet and you accidentally delete or lose what you are working on. Remember that pressing Ctrl +Z will take you back a stage or two or three so that you can undo what you have just done. In the last magazine we advised against downloading from cnet.com because it tends to download junk programs without telling you. Other similarly offending sites are iobit, adobe and even Skype from Microsoft. As a general rule when downloading software we would always advise using the custom installation option (even though this is unlikely to be the “recommended” option.) The custom installation will give you the choice of removing ticks from items you do not wish to download. For example, Adobe will automatically download McAfee Security Plus, unless you tell it not to. The consequence is that if you already have an antivirus protector, McAfee might conflict with it. You will also soon be encouraged to download the paid for version. Useful Apps for your phone or tablet. Stocks – London Stock Quotes gives details of the Footsie 100, 250 and 350 performance plus you can add details of any shares that you hold. If it’s currency you wish to track, then try XE Currency. Windows 10 Anniversary Update. By the time you read this your Windows 10 should have been updated. It should have been done automatically through Windows Update. Perhaps the best thing in this update is that facility to use extensions in the Edge browser. We are aware that many of you were put off Edge when it was first released because of the lack of the facility to use extensions. You may have been happy with another browser to which you have become familiar. On the other hand you may wish to give Edge another go. If you have any questions or suggested topics for future editions, please email us vicloughran@siberme.com or peterdowd@siberme.com

So take care when opening emails if not sure of sender. Do not give out bank or password details. 29

JUST FOR A SMILE SENIOR ROMANCE This months jokes submitted by Dave Hackett An older couple were lying in bed one night. The husband was falling asleep but the wife was in a romantic mood and wanted to talk. She said: "You used to hold my hand when we were courting." Wearily he reached across, held her hand for a second and tried to get back to sleep. A few moments later she said: "Then you used to kiss me." Mildly irritated, he reached across, gave her a peck on the cheek and settled down to sleep. Thirty seconds later she said: "Then you used to bite my Neck." Angrily, he threw back the bed clothes and got out of bed. "Where are you going?" she asked. "To get my teeth!" DOWN AT THE RETIREMENT CENTRE 80-year old Bessie bursts into the recreation room at the retirement home. She holds her clenched fist in the air and announces, "Anyone who can guess what's in my hand can have sex with me tonight!" An elderly gentleman in the rear shouts out, "An elephant?" Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards. One day, they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said, "Now don't get mad at me... I know we've been friends for a long time but I just can't think of your name. I've thought and thought, but I can't remember it. Please tell me what your name is." Her friend glared at her. For at least three minutes she just stared and glared at her. Finally she said, "How soon do you need to Know?" SENIOR DRIVING As a senior citizen was driving down the highway, his car phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him, "Vernon, I just heard on the news that SUDOKU ANSWER there's a car going the wrong way on M1. Please be careful!"
