PRESIDENT’S LETTER

We have returned from sunny South Africa just in time for the rains in ‘sunny’ Spain! Of course the reservoirs are urgently in need of this rain. But why can't it rain at night only and not for days on end? The Club is buzzing at the moment with many members returning from their summer jaunts. I hope you are all finding something to attend in our busy calendar running up to Christmas. The big event of the year has to be our Birthday party, being held this year at El Paraiso Golf Club, tickets are going fast so I'm sure the night is going to be a great success. This month too we have an E.G.M. concerning whether to have a lift, and or a toilet installed upstairs or nothing. You will find more information about this in the magazine. I do hope many of you will attend as it's no good complaining after the choice has been made if you didn't come to vote. Just to remind you there are only a few weeks left before Christmas and New Year, where has the year gone! Sue Potter

PAST EVENTS Monday 21st September - Annual Trip to the Lakes Submitted by Liz Dawson It was a little overcast as we set off on our day trip to the lakes but it didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits. We made the usual pick ups along the coast before turning inland into the hills. We had lovely views of the mountains and the pretty white village of Ojen. We stopped for coffee and bacon butties at Finca la Mota, a charming 350 year old inn. It has recently been renovated and has a lovely patio and swimming pool. We all enjoyed sitting outside at this very tranquil location. We then continued our scenic coach trip to the lakes at Parque Ardales. After a past dry winter and summer the lakes were not as full as in the past but this did not detract from the stunning turquoise colour of them. Our coach driver, David, stopped at Restaurant El Kiosko where some stayed for a drink while others made their way down quite a steel descent to the lake, including Brenda’s 94 year old mother! About a dozen of us had a swim in the very refreshing water. There was then time for lunch, some ate at the restaurant while others decided to explore by wandering off in different directions around the lakeside and spectacular dam and finding other venues to eat. By now the sun had made an appearance and the lakes were now glistening. At 4.30pm it was back on the coach. Return journey passed magnificent scenery including stunning rock formations and eventually came to Caminito del Rey the walkway along the steep walls of the El Chorro Gorge, this having been recently renovated and is now open to any intrepid walkers. We stopped here for ‘pics’ at this awe inspiring site. It was such a pleasure to be driven round these mountainous roads as it enabled me to sit back and enjoy the spectacular scenery of this beautiful area. A big ‘thank you’ to Joan for organising the trip. Saturday 10th October - Trip to Fuengirola Salón Varietés Theatre Rocky Horror Picture Show High heels, fishnet stockings, suspenders, Basques, feather boas... and the women were pretty dressed up too! If you saw these people getting on a coach they were on their way to the Salón de Varietés in Fuengirola to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show, the cult rock musical that has had audiences dancing in the aisles since 1975. I´m not talking about ICE members of course – we were a sombre bunch, at least at the beginning, and many of us were only there for the shopping. By the end of the evening though the rock fans agreed they´d had a great evening´s entertainment courtesy of Frank N. Furter, Brad, Janet, Rocky and co. The story is a sort of science fiction version of Frankenstein, where the naive newly engaged couple Brad and Janet inadvertently stumble into the improbable world of the debauched alien transvestite scientist Frank N. Furter on the day he gives life to his creature Rocky, a beautiful young man. The plot is complicated, but needless to say Brad and Janet lose their innocence, there is a great deal of near nudity, groping and general nearthe-knuckle naughtiness, and in the grand finale the whole cast is on stage resplendent in high heels, fishnet stockings, suspenders, Basques and feather boas... and many of the audience were similarly attired. And even we were all on our feet singing and dancing! Thanks to Joan for organising this orgy of vicarious vice, feasting and for some of us shopping, and next time we have a party... let´s do the time warp again! Submitted by Sally Holloway 8

PAST EVENTS Tuesday 6th October - Golf Autumn Cup ''Signs that summer is over....the days are shorter, Strictly is on TV and the ICE Golf Society are playing their Autumn Cup competition!!!” Thirty three players arrived before daybreak at this year's venue, Dona Julia Golf Club, in preparation for the shot gun start of 8:45. The course was well prepared with lovely greens, the weather was generally kind with just a short shower of rain and all the players enjoyed a friendly, but competitive round of golf. The venue for the lunch was the regular watering-hole of La Choza, brilliantly organised by Peter Henry. Everyone was very complimentary of the food and attention of the staff. After lunch came the much anticipated results of the morning's competition and presentation of a variety of prizes that ranged from golf equipment and green fee vouchers, alcoholic beverages, a meal at The Brasserie at Casares Golf Club (donated by Arturo) and some fresh eggs provided by Mariska's hens (Jackie, Bernadette etc)!! Scores were tight and the following were mentioned in dispatches...... At the end of the day everyone left singing the praises of all who had helped but especially for our illustrious captain in particular who even though he had a lot of organisation to do before and after his golf round still managed to produce the winning card. Well done to him and all winners. Jackie McMurtry ' See also Golf News page 25 and further photos on web site www.siberme.com Saturday 17th October - Rob & Sue’s Manilva Will I get Walking Treasure Hunt back before I don’t know how you planned it Sue but you bar shuts? missed all that heavy rain that started just as the walk ended. Sue Davis & Sheila Kirkham 35 points, winning a meal voucher worth €50 at La Rada Restaurant. 2nd. Bob & Vera Culley 34.5 points, Equal 3rd. Bob & Brenda Taylor with Diane & Dave Hackett 34 points. Eight Things To Consider When Moving To Spain By Terry Wayne, Partner, Blevins Franks 952 799 752

terry.wayne@blevinsfranks.com

Are you planning to move to the Estepona region, or have you recently arrived? What a good choice. It is such a lovely place to live, with a very enjoyable and beneficial lifestyle. Here is an overview of the key financial considerations for UK nationals relocating to Spain or already living here. 1) Tax residency and obligations You need to establish what makes you resident in Spain for tax purposes, in which case you are liable for Spanish tax on your worldwide income, gains and wealth, and subject to the succession tax rules. You also need to follow the UK tax residence rules because they could catch you out. 2) Your home If you are selling property in the UK, what is the best plan to limit or avoid UK or Spanish capital gains tax? Appropriate, timely advice, will avoid common pitfalls. 3) Structuring your assets to minimise tax Spanish taxpayers have had a particularly high tax burden over recent years, though they have improved a little in 2015. The top income tax rate is 46.5% in Islas Canarias. With specialist advice you can structure savings and investments to be tax efficient in Spain. 4) Currency Many British expatriates keep their savings and investments in Sterling. This puts income at the mercy of exchange rate fluctuations. A sensible rule of thumb is to match your assets to your long-term liabilities to reduce currency risk, though you also need to consider personal factors. 5) Pensions There are usually ways to improve your private pension arrangements to make them work better for you. It is vital that you receive specialist advice. There are various options for your UK pension funds, and each has different implications for your long-term income and the tax payable. 6) Inflation and your long-term security Inflation will reduce the spending power of your savings over your retirement years. Take action now to protect your wealth in real terms. 7) Investments Your investment strategy should be specifically designed around your personal circumstances, objectives and risk profile. Are you sure your portfolio is suitable for you and your needs? Is it tax efficient? Ask a professional advisory firm like Blevins Franks to review your investments to see how they need to be adjusted for your new life in Spain. 8) Estate planning Your estate planning arrangements need to take both Spanish and UK succession law and tax into account. Ensuring that assets pass to the right beneficiaries at the right time, with the minimum of administration or taxation, can be a complicated process. It is important to undertake a succession planning health check, with help of a specialist wealth manager. Taking advice from a professional tax planning and wealth management specialist is invaluable. It is the only way you can be sure that you have not overlooked anything, and that you have established what all your options are and how suitable they are for you. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. To accommodate the lift the bottom section of the stairs from ground to first floor will be turned 90° as shown in the picture on the left. The lift ground floor and first floor entrances will then open directly into the club. This will then limit the amount of builders work necessary for accommodating the lift shaft. To comply with European standards a shallow lift pit will be required, top headroom clearance for the lift shaft in this position will be satisfactory. The lift would be designed and fitted primarily for the use of those that cannot easily access the club premises on either floor by use of the stairs. It would be of a design seen in many places solely for the use of the less able. The lift would be self supporting with some builders work. Construction of the lift shaft, lift car and doors would be of a glass construction with painted steel frame. Doors would be semi automatic swing type. The lift shaft is flush so no car door is necessary, to comply with standards an infra red detector is fitted across the entrance and car controls are by constant pressure only. Lift can be called from either level by call pushes. The lift car will be large enough to accommodate person sitting in wheelchair plus one other and is fitted with a handrail. The speed is slow as is normal with this type of lift installation at just 0.15 m/s. Presentation can be seen on web site www.siberme.com Club have 3 quotations to be considered by the following companies: Budget prices: Lift €12/14,000, Builders work/glass shaft €9,000 + tax 26

<<26 If a lift is to be fitted in the club the existing staircase has to be altered. The existing staircase from the upper floor goes down to a mezzanine landing then turns 180° then descends to the lower floor. The staircase from the upper floor to the mezzanine landing stays. The mezzanine landing will have to have a new support pillar built. The lower staircase demolished and rebuilt at 90° to descend to the lower floor exiting by the first pillar next to the folding doors. Estimated Cost € 4.500 The proposal of a toilet to be built on the upper floor of the club has been looked into by myself and a qualified builder. The only place that a toilet can be built where access to services is available is at the entrance close to the front door. The toilet will take up a floor space of 3sq mts. The entrance will be on the right 1 meter in from the front door, it will open inwards. The walls and ceiling will be constructed with soundproofing material. It will be fitted with a lighting, extractor, basin, toilet and grab rails. The cost will be between € 5.500 to € 6.500 depending on the furniture required and what price the soundproofing is. This area at the moment is being used by the theatre for storage but they are willing to downsize if needed. Man goes to the docs, with a strawberry growing out of his head. Doc says, 'I'll give you some cream to put on it.'

Sprouting seeds - so easy and so healthy. Submitted by Wilma Keeley You need a jar, cheese cloth or tights for the top, rubber band to fasten. Alfalfa seeds, sunflower seeds (the unsalted and not roasted ones), chick peas and lentils, just a few to mention, are ideal. 1. Take 2 or 3 tablespoons full of the seeds and cover with water over night. 2. Next morning rinse water off through the cloth, rinse once more with fresh water, rinse off again and store the jar in a dark place. You may do the rinsing and straining 2 or 3 times a day. 3. When sprouts are 1/2 to 1 inch long, depending which seeds (grow to 1/2 inch) or pulses (grow to 1 inch) you use, taking about 2 to 5 days, put the jar in daylight to green up. Very rich in vitamins and also chlorophyll. 4. Use daily on salads or stir fry. 31

JUST FOR A SMILE

I went to the bar last night and saw a rather large young lady dancing on a table. I said, "Good legs.” The lady giggled and said, "Do you really think so.” I said, "Definitely! Most tables would have collapsed by now.”

I got caught short at the swimming pool today. The lifeguard shouted at me so loud, I nearly fell in. QUIZ ANSWERS Q1. 1605 Q2. York Q3. 36 Q4. Robert Catesby Q5. King James I Q6. Lord Monteagle Q7.
