President’s Letter

In April we had to say our final farewell to Pam Shine, our thoughts are with Anthony and their family at this very sad time. At last, the weather has warmed up, long may it continue. The Easter Lunch was a great success thanks to Brenda and Diane and the many helpers that volunteered their time. This month we have a trip to the Lobo park and an Australian supper, I've been reliably told that kangaroo is not on the menu. Of course the big event this month is the trip to Lake Garda, I'm sure there will be plenty of photos to show all of you not going! Estepona are holding their Foreign Residents' Day on 21st May, the Club will be having a stall selling cakes and tea. We will need volunteers to man the stall for an hour plus some volunteers to make home made cakes. You will he reimbursed for any costs. There will be a volunteer sheet posted on the notice board. Next month, in June, we have a dinner and dance and a Caribbean supper so plenty to look forward to. Looking into the far future, November, Jo-Anna Huismann is organising a trip to Doñana, more details soon. Whatever decision is made with Brexit it will affect us all, as Pat Brooks found out in hospital it's not only the British who don't know what's going on! Sally Holloway keeps abreast with all news and will inform us of any updates. The red button in the lift has now been repaired, please don't pull or push it. We now have electric light switches by the front door so there is no need to stumble in the dark. Please support events and if you have any suggestions please let us know. Sue

CONGRATULATIONS to members Peter Henry and Olga (Oly) Crolley who were married in Gibraltar on 14th March 2017. THANK YOU TO THOSE CONCERNED FOR THE FLOWERS I RECEIVED AT THE AGM… THEY WERE BEAUTIFUL…….Tracy

PAST EVENTS Friday March 31st 4.00pm - Bremain in Spain Forum. This meeting, on the Friday afternoon was very well attended. Sally Holloway handed out information about the various groups and how you can join them to get your voice heard. Many of the attendees had questions and useful ideas about options for healthcare etc. Please feel free to contact Sally, if you’d like to receive details of this information. APRIL Sunday April 16th Easter Sunday Lunch Good News The Easter Bunny Wabbit Was Not On The Menu!!! Thanks to the volunteers that attended the club on Saturday, 51 members and guests were welcomed with the attractively decorated tables all ready for the Easter Feast. Thanks to Brenda and Diane for the cooking, and all the helpers in the kitchen, and of course the ’Trolley Dollies,’ it was a great success. We must also thank the busy bar staff, without volunteer members of the club, events for our pleasure just could not take place. The three course meal consisted of delicious starters, followed by the star of the day roast beef and trimmings or tasty fish. Finishing up with calorie busting apple crumble pie or strawberry sponge tart. A big feast I am sure sent us on our way with full bellies. Thanks again for all those involved. PAST EVENTS Friday 24th March - Ronda Trip By Train And Coach Seems like we all got just a bit uptight about the weather forecast on the days leading up to the trip, heavy rain all day forecast for Ronda, which may have put off late bookings from members. It was reported that the temperature the night before the trip to have been -1°C! Should we have worried, ‘nada’, Joan had organised the trip right down to the weather. Who needs all those meteorology and satellite forecasts, certainly not our Joan. So on a sunny morning 30 members and guests were picked up at the usual points, checked on by Vic who, Margaret said, ‘I supervised!’ Uneventful trip to Algeciras for transfer to the train, destination Ronda. Would you believe just as we were getting off the coach for a comfort and coffee stop it started to rain, and it continued as we got on the train and then came down heavily once we were comfortably seated. However, about 2 km away from Algeciras the rain stopped and we saw no more until we reached Estepona at the end of our trip where the roads were seen to be very wet and puddles following a heavy downpour. The train that leaves the plain: In the 1890's, Gibraltar's garrison officers wanted to enjoy the campo, so a railway was built between Algeciras, Ronda and beyond. Nowadays the train journey makes a lovely day trip through stunning scenery and historic sites. The line was originally built between 1890-92 by the Algeciras (Gibraltar) Railway Company Ltd to enable British garrison officers and their families to escape the claustrophobic atmosphere of Gibraltar and enjoy the surrounding campo. The mastermind behind the railway was a British engineer, John Morrison, backed by his friend and wealthy financier Sir Alexander Henderson - later, the first Lord Faringdon. The two men had already cut their teeth on ambitious railway projects in South America, compared to which the 178 km (110 miles) line was small fry. The first section of the railway up to Jimena was officially opened in October 1890, and the next to Ronda in November 1892, operating six passenger trains daily through 22 stations and costing 11 pesetas and 65 centimos (6p) for a first class seat from San Roque to Ronda. These days you will find the train to be very modern and comfortable, taking 1hour 25 minutes for the pleasant journey. Ronda: So on arrival at lunch time, most made the decision to follow Joan's recommendation for a welcome drink and meal at Restaurante Pizzería Michelangelo and what a good choice it turned out to be. A varied choice of menu del dia at just 7.50€ including a drink, good sized portions. If you are visiting Ronda the restaurant has 4½ stars on Tripadvisor and can be found by crossing the road from Plaza de Toros to Plaza del Socorro and the restaurant is just inside the street on the right looking from the car park exit (Facebook pizzeria michelangelo). So for some it was then time for some sight seeing or retail therapy. Ronda is a mountaintop city that’s set dramatically above a deep gorge. This gorge (El Tajo) separates the city’s circa-15th-century new town from its old town, dating back to Moorish rule. Puente Nuevo, a stone bridge spanning the gorge, has a lookout offering great views. The new town’s Plaza de Toros is a legendary 18th-century bullring and one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. So homeward bound: 4.30pm soon came around and time to board the coach back to our homes. It was a clear day as we wound our way back down to the coast, and those that managed to stay awake had great views of the countryside during the journey. As we arrived in Estepona the roads were very wet, it looked good timing for us just missing a heavy rain storm. Thanks Joan for once again organising a very pleasant trip. Back In Time - 50 Years Ago - May 1967 6 May – Manchester United won the Football League First Division title. 11 May – The United Kingdom and Ireland officially applied for European Economic Community membership. This is about one of the three European Communities that existed from 1958 until 2009. It is not to be confused with the present-day European Union which incorporated the European Communities in 1993. The Community's initial aim was to bring about economic integration, including a common market and customs union, among its six founding members: Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany. 20 May – In the first all-London FA Cup final, Tottenham Hotspur defeated Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley Stadium. 25 May – Celtic F.C. became the first British and Northern European team to reach a European Cup final and also to win it, beating Inter Milan 2-1 in normal time with the winning goal being scored by Steve Chalmers in Lisbon, Portugal. 28 May – Sir Francis Chichester arrived in Plymouth after completing his single-handed sailing voyage around the world in his yacht, Gipsy Moth IV, in nine months and one day. 29 May – The first Spring Bank Holiday occurred on a fixed date of the last Monday in May, replacing the former Whitsun holiday in England and Wales. Our Chill Out Trip

I have been asked by many members ‘what do you find to do now that you are no longer the magazine editor?’ Well, I can assure you that Pat is now pleased that I am catching up with jobs that just seemed to get put off. So with time on our hands we decided after a long winter to get away for 5 days at the beginning of April for a bit of R&R. We chose the area near Arcos de la Frontera staying nearby at El Santiscal at the side of the lake Arcos (Embalse de Arcos). We stayed at a hotel that is a converted hacienda of old world charm, Hotel Hacienda el Santiscal (www.santiscal.com) a restored 15th century manor house with many original features and great views over the lake to the well tended agricultural and fertile hills in the distance. In the distance could be seen the pueblo blanco of Arcos de la Frontera old town with tangled labyrinth of cobbled streets that lead up to the sandstone castle. We were quite surprised by the daytime temperature for April that was hotter than the coast we had left, but went very cold at night being about eleven in the morning before the temperature rose again. During the day we toured the countryside or walked the lakeside that has a beach, many areas for fishing and great for bird watchers. During the summer months the lake appears to be set up for boating, and there are also two water polo courts set up at the lake side at a sports centre. Within a half hour walk from our hotel was a very welcome bar right on the edge of the lake. On the last day we decided that Puerto Santa Maria, being only about an hour away, was worth a visit having been there a number of times with the club. Unfortunately my map reading went astray when setting the sat nav and we did not end up in the old town. Suzy (the car) brought us to a beach area close to the very large Puerta Sherry Marina that would make Estepona and Duquesa ports combined seem minuscule in comparison. Puerto Sherry is a magnificent marina located in the Bay of Cadiz, El Puerto de Santa María. So it turned out to be a pleasant area to discover and has many restaurants and bars. An enjoyable break in the country that could be used as a base to easily to visit Jerez, Seville or Cadiz, and National Park areas. So back home to catch up again with the chores!!! Terry Smith 8

MAY 2017 Crossword Enthusiasts Here are a few free apps which you might want to try. I suppose the purists will say that it is cheating but we leave that decision to you. Anagram Solver (Android and Apple) Enter known letters plus blanks; will also search for two word answers. Crossword Solver (Android only) To help you finish off those last few squares; enter the known letters and use a space for unknowns to see matched from a 250,000 word dictionary. Cleverdio (Android only) So this is probably cheating! As well as the features of the other two apps, you can filter results by banning letters and search for words of any length. Windows 10. Would you like to have quick access to the control panel that you liked in Win7. Right Click on the desktop and choose Personalize. From here select Themes | Desktop Icon Settings. In the Desktop Icon Settings window check Control Panel and click OK. An icon for Control Panel will now appear on the desktop. News and Weather Updates on your Desktop Infobar is a free tool which displays a whole range of information at the top of your computer screen e.g. weather forecasts, Reuters newsfeeds, system information and much more. Download the software at www.mitc.cz/infobar.html. After downloading you will need to set the preferences. Click on the yellow star in the top left-hand corner and choose Preferences. From here you are able to define how and what is displayed. Be aware that the weather preference is set to Czech Republic (the source of the software). This can be changed to your own preference. A useful feature is the display at the top right of whether Numeric Lock or Caps Lock is on. If you have any questions or suggested topics for future editions, please email us vicloughran@siberme.com or peterdowd@siberme.com PHOTO CORNER The next session of “Photo Group” will be on Friday 28th April at 11.00am presented by Debra Coleman Don’t forget the ICE Photo Group plans to produce a calendar for 2018, which will contain photos taken by the group throughout the year. You can send them to me, Sheila Fox safoxuk@gmail.com and mark them as “Calendar Photos Competition” 11

GARDEN CLUB The second Garden club meeting was held at 11.30am on Tuesday 11th April at Agrojardin. There was a good attendance – even another new member. As always we had an enjoyable meeting outside in the café before strolling off to look/buy new plants, shrubs etc., Some gardening problems were raised followed by other members’ experiences and useful advice. Wilma kindly passed on details of a good, cheaper food for plants that her Spanish gardener recommended. It is called Quince, Quince, Quince (15-15-15), natural and not harmful to animals. Cuttings had been brought along and soon taken. A discussion took place as to where we could have future meetings. One of our members offered her garden for our next meeting on May 9th, which we all agreed would be lovely. Keith and Helen brought along an article seen in SUR on the Molina de Inca Botanical Garden in Torremolinos. Having passed the article around for everyone to read, we all agreed it would be wonderful to visit, and a 19 seat minibus will be ordered. It would work out at about 25 euros each and Tuesday, June 13th was the date chosen for the trip. Any garden Club members wanting to join us – book your place quickly with Sandy as seats are going fast. So the next Garden Club meeting will be held on Tuesday 9 th May at 11.30 a.m. in a member’s garden – see Sandy for details, maps etc.. Tip of the month; When you have a banana, do not throw away the skin. Improve your roses by burying strips of potassium-rich banana skins around the base of the plant once a month. This will feed your rose and help keep it disease-free. Today, many expatriates transfer to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS) to benefit from tax advantages and flexibility over UK pensions. Once in a QROPS, funds are sheltered from UK taxation on income and gains and no longer count towards your lifetime pension allowance (LTA), enabling unlimited growth without attracting 55% or 25% LTA tax penalties. Usually, QROPS also provide greater investment diversification compared to UK pension schemes and more freedom to vary income. Whereas most UK pensions are payable only to your spouse on death, QROPS offer flexibility to include other heirs in estate planning. Even if nothing materially changes post-Brexit in how we draw UK pensions in Spain, the income remains vulnerable to exchange rates. QROPS offer multi-currency flexibility, letting you hold and draw your savings in different currencies. This potentially insulates pension income from volatility in the pound and euro. The new QROPS tax A new ‘overseas transfer charge’ revealed in the UK Spring Budget may be an indication of changes post-Brexit. Since 9th March, a 25% tax applies to UK pension funds transferred to a QROPS outside the European Economic Area (EEA), unless you live in the same jurisdiction. All other QROPS transfers (within the £1 million lifetime pension allowance) remain free of UK taxation. Expatriates in Spain moving to a QROPS based here or in another EEA area, like Gibraltar, escape this tax. However, liability lingers for a full five tax years after the transfer date. So if your circumstances change within that time to make you eligible for taxation – like moving outside the EEA – the UK taxman can still claim a quarter of transferred funds. Limited tax-free window? Brexit will eliminate Britain’s current EU commitments, offering more opportunities to recoup revenue from UK nationals abroad. Many speculate this will prompt the UK government to impose widespread penalties on pension transfers. They could also change the rules to make it harder to take advantage of today’s high transfer values for ‘defined benefit’ (final salary) pensions. However, transferring is not suitable for everyone and differences between QROPS providers and jurisdictions could affect tax benefits. Alternative investment structures could offer expatriates comparable benefits to QROPS, so take advice to establish the most suitable approach for you. With pensions it is also important to use regulated providers for protection from scams and unsuitable investments. Until April 2019 – while Britain is still an EU member – little can change in relation to the way you receive or transfer your UK pensions. If you decide that transferring is right for you, consider acting now, before Brexit triggers change, to secure the retirement of your choice in Spain. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. Reclaim Lost Property Deposits Many thousands of people from the UK or throughout Europe lost their deposit on a ‘Off plan Property’ due to either the Developer entering into Bankruptcy or the development not being completed. The Spanish Supreme Court has ruled that purchasers are now able to reclaim these ¨Lost Deposits¨ for up to fifteen years from the time when their property was deemed to be completed. However, each claim can only be brought before courts once and must be done so individually. Off Plan Property Deposit Refunds S.L. based in Estepona, are successfully reclaiming lost deposits for clients on a totally ¨No Win/ No Fee” basis in conjunction with our lawyers who are very well known and respected along the Costa Del Sol. They have been in practice for over twenty years and specialise in the process for reclaiming lost deposits through the Spanish Courts for the last ten years for hundreds of clients. There are NO “Upfront Costs¨ required and No Monies are required from a client at the outset or during the duration of a claim. Our ¨No Win / No Fee¨ basis has been set up whereby a fee is only paid on the successful outcome of an individual case. In the unlikely event a case is unsuccessful ALL COSTS on both sides are met by our lawyers as they are confident that when representing clients on a ¨No Win/No Fee¨ basis they WILL win the case.
