PRESIDENTS LETTER MAY 2014 Almost half the year gone and we have had many successful trips and events already and there are so many more to look forward to including our Drama Groups production and the Caribbean themed Summer Party on the 21st of June in the clubhouse. I am sorry to have to remind the organisers of events to ensure that the clubhouse is put back as they find it and to please ensure that if you use any of the electrical equipment, it is switched off after use. All the tables and chairs should be put back and rubbish should be thrown away tidily in the bins provided. Please also return all used glasses, cups etc. to the bar. On a happier note, it was great to see Pam Shine back in the club after her recent illness and very reassuring to hear about the excellent treatment she had received from the Spanish health system. If you are worried about having treatment in Spain, I am sure that Pam will be happy to reassure you. The new committee members are settling into their roles and as always, all the committee members will be happy to hear from you if you have any suggestions for events or trips etc. Volunteers are still desperately needed for bar duties and training will be given. You will probably be directed to a fake imitation website. Be aware that banks etc. will never address you in an impersonal manner such as “Dear Customer” Never follow links in emails to financial websites. Always type in the web address in the address bar in order to ensure that you are accessing the genuine website. A further reminder: There has recently been a further spate of emails purporting to be from HMRC and stating that you are due a refund. Don’t even open these – just delete them.

Surprising China, our final report! Having being wowed by the Giant Pandas in Chengdu, we flew, next day, down to the famous city of Shanghai. We found a most modern city full of skyscrapers all vying to be the tallest. Our guide took us first of all to the Yu Gardens (Gardens of Happiness) across the river from the Main City Centre. The extensive gardens were built for a rich civil servant back in 1577 and were exactly what we had expected of Chinese architecture – very pagoda like - but now surrounded by a mass of tourist shops. Upkeep of the gardens eventually ruined the family who built them. In one of the tourist shops Bea was taught how to drink tea at a Chinese Tea Ceremony and we learned of the history of tea manufacture and its transport to India. In order to preserve the tea during the long journey, by camel and horseback, the Chinese found a way of converting the tea into solid blocks which did not deteriorate. The tea shop did, of course, have available solid tea now made into attractive medallions as a tourist souvenir. Our guide next took us to a restaurant on the side of the Huangpu River for yet another sample of Chinese cuisine, very much different to our Western version. As we left the restaurant we were treated to the stunning sight of the Shanghai skyline at night across the river from the famous “Bund” where the British and Americans used to live in Colonial days. We were then driven under the river and along to the most amazing “walking street” that we had ever seen. It put the normal pedestrianised streets we are used to in Europe into the shade as it was at least 100m wide and was teeming with people and with Rolex shops, it seemed, every few meters! The Street was so long that it even had its own Toto Train to take you along. Next day we explored Shanghai on our own and even ventured onto their most modern Underground trains We were further amazed to find that the Underground stations had been developed into enormous shopping centres with yet more Rolex shops! As we wandered through the streets it came as something of a surprise to discover branches of Marks & Spencer, Sephora and even Tesco. On the recommendation of ICE Club members Nina and Tim Taminiau, who had previously lived in Shanghai, we made our way to the tallest building in the city, the Shanghai World Finance Centre and took the high speed lift to the top. The viewing station on the 101st floor was in the form of a rectangular slot and the views were spectacular. The building was developed by the Japanese and the original plan was to have a huge circular hole at the top. This idea did not go down well with the Chinese authorities as it looked too much like the rising sun symbol on the Japanese flag. The “slot” provided an excellent viewing platform and the Shanghai locals immediately hit on the name of the “Bottle opener” for the building. You can, in fact, buy a replica bottle opener at the tower tourist shop. The building was the second tallest tower in the world for some time and completely dwarfs the famous Oriental Pearl Tower which was the symbol of Shanghai for many years. It was something of a surprise to look out from the Bottle opener slot to find a new building under construction just a few dozen meters away which will eventually be even taller. We could not resist watching the sunset over Shanghai from the 94th floor bar whilst partaking of a Gin Tonic. Next day, we were up at the crack of dawn to catch the Maglev train to the airport for our flight to Hong Kong. The train has no wheels and runs on a series of electro magnets which elevate the carriages a couple of centimetres above the track. The train can travel silently at up to 430 km/h but we were treated to a more sedate 300 km/h which meant, nevertheless, that we travelled the 30 km distance to the airport in less than 8 minutes!! 8
And so to our final destination in China, Hong Kong. The city reminded us of Gibraltar as, despite the handover to China in 1997, there are still many reminders of the 176 years of British presence there. There are still many English street names and the streets are much narrower than we had become accustomed to in mainland China. Hong Kong is still quite autonomous from Mainland China with its own currency, laws and border controls. Quite a large proportion of investment in China is channelled through the city and the Hong Kong people are proud of their semi-independence. Part of the Handover agreement was that Hong Kong would become a Special Administrative Region of China and the existing way of life, laws etc. would remain for 50 years. Hong Kong Island is visited across the harbour from the mainland using the famous, double ended, Star Ferries which are very frequent and very cheap. Most of the International Finance Companies are based on the Island and we took a Red Bus tour to get a better feel for the place. We found that it was very crowded and a little scruffy in comparison with the Chinese cities that we had just visited. One of the highlights of Hong Kong is to take the cable tram to the top of the Island Mountain called “the Peak” Here we took a circular walk around the Peak and enjoyed spectacular views over the City and out onto the South China sea. It was very pleasant to stop at a restaurant called “The Lookout” which was where the Merchant´s servants used to watch for incoming ships. When one was sighted they would rush down the mountain to the waterfront to get ready for the ship´s arrival. We learned that during colonial times, government dignitaries were carried up the hill to their mansions on a sedan chair carried by eight servants. The bearers were obliged to wear full livery even during the hot and humid summers. Looking down on Hong Kong, we could not help wondering what would happen if an earthquake would ever happen as the buildings are very tall and built very close to each other. One could envision a falling domino effect as one building might topple into the next setting off a chain reaction. To escape the crowds in Hong Kong, we took a ferry to one of the outlying Islands called Lama Island. Here we came face to face with the real China for the first time on our trip, with fishermen eking out an existence. We dined, expensively, on locally caught fish and watched as the fisherman bought in their catch direct to the few harbour front restaurants. What a contrast to the relative opulence of Hong Kong and the other Major Chinese cities that we had just visited. And so that was the end of our China experience. We both agreed that the highlights of our trip were The Great Wall of China, The Terracotta army, the Giant Pandas, the Shanghai night skyline (and being upgraded to Business class on our Dubai Beijing flight!). China turned out to be much more advanced than we had expected especially in terms of recently built infrastructure. Our Tour Company, Magical China, provided reliable airport pickups, always a concern in the middle of China, and the excellent English speaking guides were both friendly and knowledgeable. We would definitely encourage anyone to add a trip to China to their Bucket List!!! Submitted by Ron and Bea Sykes 9

PAST EVENTS Monday 17th March - St Patrick’s Celebrations A WAFT OF GREEN Members and Guests were not only met with a Cead Mile Failte, A hundred thousand welcomes, but a field of warm green as they entered the cloisters of Club Siberme. With green outfits to the left and green outfits to the right it was difficult to distinguish who were members and guests and who were the leprechauns! The atmosphere was, as expected, jovial, warm and ongoing craic generated a festive spirit celebrating St Patrick's day. The genial hostess, Joan Thompson, conducted the evening with charming poise, introducing many members proudly extolling their Irish background with their favourite music, songs and the famous craic! Members of our international club from other countries gave varied performances from musicals, popular songs to jokey story-telling. The attending members were in fine form and voice enjoying the Irish sing along, duly conducted by Joan. A well deserved thanks and applause was given to Joan, and the volunteer bar staff, for making the night memorable and a joyful St Patrick’s Day celebration, where troubles were forgotten and friendships strengthened. I leave you dear reader with an old Irish saying, "May your troubles be as far apart as my grandmothers teeth!". PAST EVENTS Friday 28th March - Totem Pottery Visit - A New Experience Do you enjoy messing about with plasticine with your grandchildren? Do have a creative urge but have tried being an artist, doing tapestry, embroidery, knitting, flower arranging and it’s just not your thing? Well why not give pottery classes a whirl! A group of four of us went along to Totem Ceramics in Benavista on Friday morning, braving the downpour, to a fascinating talk and demonstration given by charismatic father and daughter team Chad and Susie. We went along, not quite knowing what to expect, and were enthralled with their knowledge, skill and enthusiasm and with the quality of the work of their students. We learned that making something out of clay is so much more than watching a lump of clay wobble out of control on a wheel. Beautiful pieces can be made simply from slab work, joining squares of clay together, building them into three dimensional pieces, decorating, glazing, firing then painting until, in no time, you have a quirky trinket box or a storage container for paper napkins. Then there is coiling, worms of clay building up to make a pot or a cup or vase, smoothed with fingers to make it adhere, ready for your own inspirational colours or design. There is no end to what you can create. We saw frames for mirrors, bird baths, embossed tiles, candle holders, fruit bowls, tea pots, mobiles and Christmas decorations for the tree. We stopped for coffee and pastries and then Chad showed us the throwing and centering of the clay on the wheel. This is an art which will take a while to master but it looked so sensual and satisfying I could imagine it immensely pleasurable and the end product is something uniquely yours, useful perhaps or just decorative. We had a delightful two hours with Chad and Susie and I am seriously considering taking a class or two at the studio. Brochures are available at the club and we all thank Doug for introducing us to the Totem team and to them for making us so welcome. Submitted by Brenda Ogilvie Tuesday 8th April - GARDENING CLUB DAY OUT The Gardening Club visited two Garden Centres in San Enrique. We all met at Martins Garden Centre at 11.am and spent enjoyable time walking around their large premises. As well as all the usual garden flora and accessories, there were lots of attractive indoor and outdoor furniture and furnishings on display. We then went onto visit our second venue - Viveros Contreras, another very attractive Garden Centre nearby. It was a nice hot day and both garden centres had lots of beautiful displays. Everyone soon started filling their trolleys with plants, garden furniture bits, bags of soil, hanging baskets, shrubs, herbs, even 5 kilos of oranges at only 2 Euros! The morning visits ended with a relaxing drink/tapas/lunch sitting outside under the shade of the trees at the little cafeteria next door. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and will look forward to the next meeting on Tuesday 13th May which will be held in a beautiful garden of one of our members. Some walking involved to see views, you need good walking shoes or trainers, take a bottle of water. Time for lunch at Fuente de Piedra, at La Tejada . Organiser Joan Thompson. 12€ members, 15€ guests. El Torcal Park Nature Reserve is known for it's unusual limestone rock formations. Located about 30 km north of Málaga city in the direction of Antequera near the village of Villanueva de la Concepción, within El Torcal Park's 17 square km are some of the most beautiful and impressive limestone landscapes in Europe. The whole area was under sea until one hundred million years ago. The Dolmen is a corridor tomb in which a forecourt open to the exterior leads to a second, rectangular section that acts as a passage leading to the oval-shaped chamber. In the cave, as well as the dolmen, fossil remains can be found and studies made of the layers of the earth.

Shoes must be smooth-soled with no ‘pimples or crinkles’. This is to prevent undue damage to the playing surface, duty of all to maintain in good condition. Our trip to WA (Western Australia) in OZ. 2014. Terms of endearment AUSSIE style: g'day, ow ya goin, that'd be right, see ya, have a good day, and at the supermarkets, do you want flybuys? Whatever they are…we never found out! “Alarm clocks”… there are 3. At 5ish in the morning, "didn't know it existed", every Gallah, Kookaburra, and Crow behaved like delinquent children, squawking at the top of their voices then decided to finish off the argument sitting on our TV aerial. 6ish, the mowers and clippers come out for an hour or two. 8 to 8.30 all the kids go to school on their scooters, some with soft wheels and some with square ones. Then OUR alarm goes off, just as we're having a doze! Meal times: Breakfast is at 7 or earlier, also not on our watches. Coffee time. When we went out for coffee at 11 to11-30ish everyone is eating lunch and was difficult to find a seat but we struggled on, as you do! We go home for a light lunch as we're going out for “tea”. What time shall we be ready we ask our hosts, about 6.15 is the answer, well are we having tea with jam and scones, oh no it's at a restaurant so more like dinner but they close at 8.30, WHAT? We think but try not to look to shocked. Tea or shall I say dinner was early as I explained, so having arrived at a posh hotel for said dinner we were the last to arrive…at 7oclock! After being shown to our table and given the menus we decided to look at the drinks page and the first word we saw was "bonking" yes there it was, "Bonking Frog Merlot", so as you can imagine we had to try it, so off the waiter went returning quickly with a white wine for our daughter Louise and husband Graham, then a while later he came back with quite a straight face and said "there is no bonking tonight I'm afraid" to which we all fell about laughing as you can imagine. Obviously something got lost in the translation as we subsequently found out that it’s not what the frogs do. (See below): O.K. let’s choose another one. "Mad Fish caught our eye so we went for it, and yes you've guessed, because we were so late arriving??? The Mad Fish was sold out! We gave up on the “Purple Cowboy” and the “7 Deadly Sins.” By this time it was getting on, nearly 7-15! Would we have time to drink and eat before 8-30? After our food order was taken the restaurant slowly emptied and we were the last people to leave and were dropped home about 9-00pm. Well what do you do at 9-00 pm? The TV is dreadful! I know, we'll look up bonking or shall I say "Bonking Frog Merlot." It turns out that it’s the noise the frogs in the Margaret River area make when they’re not doing it,…not a lot of people know that but we do now, not sure about the "Mad Fish" must look it up sometime. On a serious note Perth is the most remote city in the world. WA is becoming very industrial as they have huge mines for gold, other metals and coal; all the mines are open cast and can go down half a mile. Thousands of miners and other workers fly in and out, mainly from Perth, working weeks on and weeks off. If you do that for 2/3 years you can buy a really nice house, car, etc outright and are set up for life. WA is also known for its logging, mainly transported by rail or road train trucks with 3/4 trailers, with most going into Bunbury where we stay. The wood is shredded, sent by boat to Japan where they bleach and process it then export it back to Bunbury. The Australian government don't want their ocean contaminated from all the by-products. The twice weekly competition is organised on a ‘Roll- Up’ basis and we play individual stableford, using full handicaps. Tee off times vary between 08.15 and 08.30am, dependent upon the time of year, and on a good day we can have 12 or more players rolling up. It’s all very friendly, light hearted and is open to all. We traditionally have two major competitions a year. The Spring Cup and the Autumn Cup that will take place during October. These two competitions have become great social events with a very popular celebratory luncheon after each. The Ice Club Order Of Merit competition. The trophy will be awarded to the player recording the best 10 individual cards achieved at the Tuesday and Friday ‘Roll- Ups’ during the 12 months between each Spring Cup. THIS MONTH’S RECIPE SPICED TORTILLA Cooking time: Prep: 5 mins Cook: 20 mins. Skill level: easy. Serves 4 Perfect for dinners, lunches and snacks, this spiced tortilla is a great in-the-fridge standby for many occasions. Ingredients: 1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 red chilli, deseeded and shredded 2 tsp curry spices (or mixed coriander, cumin and turmeric) 1 onion, sliced 300g cherry tomatoes 500g cooked potatoes, sliced 8 eggs, beaten Bunch coriander, stalks finely chopped, leaves roughly chopped Method: 1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Fry the onion and half the chilli for 5 mins until softened. Tip in the spices, fry for 1 min more, then add the cherry tomatoes, potatoes and coriander stalks to the pan. Season the eggs well, pour over the top of the veg and leave to cook gently for 8-10 mins until almost set. 2. Heat the grill and flash the tortilla underneath for 1-2 mins until the top is set. Scatter the coriander leaves and remaining chilli over the top, slice into wedges and serve with a green salad. Tip - leftover lunches: Leftover tortilla makes a great lunchbox filler. Anne Hardwick: In March I was able to visit family in UK thanks to two good friends in the Club who stayed here with Frank while I was away. Main reason for my visit was to attend the "Beautiful Heart Concert" , a memorial to my lovely daughter Jain, who sadly died last August. The concert was named after the first track of Jain´s CD and all proceeds were to go to Cancer Research .The function rooms of the local College had been booked for the date (22nd March) and the 300 tickets had all been sold. The concert was due to start at 7.30 and finish at 1am. I couldn´t imagine sitting in a concert format for over 5 hours! I was relieved when we arrived at the venue to find it was really a Big Gig similar to many I had previously attended in Local Pubs in UK. There were two large rooms, one with a bar and stage where a group of Jain´s girl friends were busy all night selling raffle tickets, memory bracelets and Jain´s lovely CD, all in aid of the charity. In the other room was also a stage where the first group, friends from Jain´s college days, were playing. This was an ideal situation for me as I was able to circulate and chat to all of the many people that I knew from Jain´s past and lots of family members. . The next act was a lovely friend of Jain´s who sang with the guitar but was only heard by a small group because background noise was deafening! However, the next act was the one we had been waiting for and as my youngest granddaughter Jazmine came onto the stage there was silence in both rooms. Jazmine is just 13 and this was her first public appearance other than those at the theatre school she attends but I was so proud of her composure. She sang two songs, the first accompanied by a friend on the guitar and the other, "Songbird”, unaccompanied. It is a beautiful song and there wasn´t a dry eye in the house. Her friend recorded the whole performance on her mobile and sent it to YouTube. If you go onto this website and type in her name (Jazmine Grant) you may be able to see it. I don´t remember a lot about the rest of the evening except, at the end , there were all generations dancing; my brother and I being the eldest and a group of Jazmine´s little boyfriends who had obviously practiced a routine to go with their street dance. Big Bill, who Jain sang with for many years, invited all the children onto the stage to join with his group for the last number "Rocking all over the World". It was a big thrill for me to see Jain´s two beautiful girls singing together on the mike. It was truly memorable night and raised a further £12,000 for Cancer Research. We still have some CDs left (see below) if anyone would like to buy one. They cost 10€ all proceeds to Cancer Research, See page 31 for details. Anne Hardwick 952 808 318

JUST FOR A SMILE, THIS MONTH BY SUE POTTER
While on a road trip, an elderly couple stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. After finishing their meal, they left the restaurant, and resumed their trip. When leaving, the elderly woman unknowingly left her glasses on the table, and she didn't miss them until they had been driving for about forty minutes. By then, to add to the aggravation, they had to travel quite a distance before they could find a place to turn around, in order to return to the restaurant to retrieve her glasses. All the way back, the elderly husband became the classic grouchy old man. He fussed and complained, and scolded his wife relentlessly during the entire return drive. The more he chided her, the more agitated he became. He just wouldn't let up for a single minute. To her relief, they finally arrived at the restaurant. As the woman got out of the car, and hurried inside to retrieve her glasses, the old geezer yelled to her, "While you're in there, you might as well get my hat and the credit card." The Importance of walking Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at great expense. My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60. Now he's 97 years old and we have no idea where the hell he is. I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me. The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again. I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I'm doing. Every time I hear the dirty word 'exercise', I wash my mouth out with chocolate I do have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them. The advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they'll say, 'Well, he looks good doesn't he.' If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country. We all get heavier as we get older, because there's a lot more information in our heads. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Every time I start thinking too much about how I look, I just find a pub with a Happy Hour and by the time I leave, I look just fine.
