Editorial: Well I have got to say we seem to have quite a busy program of events at present, including two great tour experiences. The first to the Jerez Horse Fair which sold out very quickly, well done Wilma for the suggestion. And then the 6 day trip to Portugal from suggestions by members (the committee does listen) is also appearing to be quite popular, booking already taking place although the trip is not until October! Please support events that are held at the clubhouse, some having been cancelled due to lack of support. Have a great Easter, Semana Santa. Last month I inserted a list of dates for 2016 public holidays, please ignore as those dates are incorrect.

Presidents Letter Today we have had to scrape the car window screen, oh the joys of driving in UK, bet none of you miss that particular job. Some of us ramblers walked the Caminito del Rey last week, details of how to join us in April are in the magazine (page 27), what a great experience and what a fantastic achievement by Spanish workmen. More photos are on the website. A packed and varied itinerary in the coming months so make sure you buy your tickets in plenty of time, may I remind you that ticket ladies work every Thursday between 11 and 12.30. The most important date this month is of course the AGM, make sure you bring your current membership card, admittance is only by the upstairs front door, speaking of which, I hope you all find the new door easier to open and lock.Hope you all have a lovely Easter and to all the British Mums have a happy Mother's day on 6th March. To Grace and Roy Gilby on the fantastic occasion of their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. A very nice couple and long standing Members of the I.C.E. Club A driver was in shock after police handed her a ₏200 fine because they couldn’t read the car number plate. The Guardia Civil stopped the driver at a Sabinillas roundabout and fined them on the spot. It is well-known that in both Spain and UK it is a legal requirement to have a legible number plate If you have a vehicle, your plate numbers must be in perfect conditions, it is the law, and in most European countries you must keep your plate number in good condition. In Gibraltar a police crackdown on traffic offenders has led to scores of people being reported for speeding, according to statistics published by the Gibraltar Police Authority in its annual report. There has also been an increase in drivers being reported for drink driving and for using a mobile phone whilst driving. You have been warned. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

PLEASE BE AWARE: ENTRY IS STRICTLY BY FIRST FLOOR DOOR ONLY AND ON PRODUCTION OF YOUR CURRENT 2016 MEMBERSHIP CARD. Membership renewal for 2016 is now overdue; for those members who have not yet renewed, please contact The Membership Secretary as soon as possible. POSTAL VOTES: Postal votes will be submitted and included in the count for the election of Committee Members and any written proposals concerning the Rules and Statutes of the ICE Club (Siberme), if appropriate, as listed on the Postal Voting papers and published in the Club Magazine. Postal Voting papers must be requested in person, by letter, by telephone, by email (secretary@siberme.com) or via the ICE (www.siberme.com) website by Sunday 6th March 2016, and returned to The Secretary, ICE (Siberme) by Wednesday 9th March 2016. ** Article 19 All Members of the Committee shall, in the first instance, be elected for one period of three years, and may be re-elected for a similar period or periods. Any Committee Member seeking re-election shall be automatically re-elected at General Meeting, if no other Member has expressed a desire to seek such election. Any other Member seeking election to the Committee, whether as one of the Principal Officers or otherwise, shall submit written notice of his or her intention to the Secretary, countersigned by ten other Club Members supporting such nomination, not less than twenty days prior to the next General Meeting. Candidates for the position of President or Vice-President must be a member of the Club for the preceding two years. REPORTING crimes has been made a great deal easier thanks to an innovative new app. AlertCops is now available across Spain and allows users to inform police about a crime or security incident straight from their smartphone, whether they are victims or witnesses. It has been specifically targeted at foreign residents and tourists as it can also be used in English. It is hoped to improve response times as well as guarantee access to emergency services for people with speech and hearing disabilities. AlertCops can be downloaded from Google Play and the Apple store. A proposal has been in the news for an Iranian oil refinery in Algeciras which will rightly cause a stir on both sides of the border of Spain and Gibraltar. There is no doubt that it would bring jobs to the Campo de Gibraltar, however the environmental impact cannot be overlooked. Algeciras is already one of Europe’s most polluted places to live and visit and a new oil refinery is only going to make matters worse. Government ministers may argue about the economic benefits in the short-term, but in the long run this project will only damage Algeciras’ reputation as an industrial hotspot engulfed in a cloud of toxic smog. R E M I N D E R – for all members who have a patio, garden or even a window box. The next Garden Club Meeting will be held at 11.am on the 8th March in the ICE clubhouse. I have some amazing photos to show you plus a free unusual garden planter to offer and some lovely cuttings thanks to Joan Thompson. Come and join us to see where we shall be going on future meetings and for useful garden tips and information re. any problems you may have at present. Everybody welcome. Sandy Avis 7

‘Oh dear,’ I thought. ‘This is an earthquake. Do I need to get out of bed?’ The same reverberations pulsing through my bedroom had been felt by people from Cadiz to Granada and as far inland as Sevilla. Minutes later a second, less-powerful tremor was felt. At 5.22am on Monday, January 25th, the earth moved for thousands in Spain and didn’t stop for 12 seconds. Spain’s National Geographic Institute estimated the quake at 6.3. Spain’s North African enclave Melilla being worst-hit, having three days earlier a quake of magnitude 5.1 shaking the same area. So what makes the region susceptible to such regular tremors? Southern Spain is not subject to the planetary convulsions that have laid waste to parts of Japan or Chile. But the convergence of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates means the Mediterranean seabed is seismically active. Resulting each year where the Iberian peninsula experiences 1,200-1,400 tremors, most too small to be felt. January’s quake was the biggest to hit for half a century, but the Iberian peninsula’s deadliest in recent times occurred in May 2011, when 11 people were killed and more than 400 injured in the Murcian town of Lorca. The Lorca tremor was of lower magnitude at 5.1, but it struck at a depth of just 3km. Januarys tremor struck at 33km below sea level, caused by the movement of tectonic plates along the strike-slip fault crossing the Alboran Sea from Cabo de Gato to Al Hoceima in Morocco. That’s the same kind of fault as California’s San Andreas, although this one, the Trans Alboran Shear Zone just off the Costa del Sol, is not known to have produced anything over a magnitude of 6.3. Aftershocks following this year’s quake caused a degree of panic among the public, however experts weren’t alarmed or surprised. The southern Iberian peninsula has felt the brutal power of Mother Nature in the past. On Christmas Day, 1884, some 839 Spaniards perished when an earthquake hit the town of Durcal in Granada. But the worst of all struck 129 years earlier – a quake estimated to have measured between 8.5 and 9 on the Richter scale. Under the Straits of Gibraltar there is a unique subduction zone, a zone in which one tectonic plate moves beneath another with the potential to cause powerful earthquakes. Although debate still rages among seismologists, it is believed that it was a subduction zone beneath the Gulf of Cadiz and Gibraltar which, In 1755, caused Europe’s deadliest earthquake. The Great Lisbon Earthquake, as it was called, killed up to 60,000 people in Portugal, Spain and Morocco, triggering a 15-metre-high tsunami that destroyed the Portuguese capital and engulfed parts of Cadiz and Huelva. “RAFFLE PRIZE” Submitted by Stephanie Monahan Last November, we were lucky enough to win a prize at the Club’s Birthday Party. This was dinner for two at Venta La Choza, one of our favourite restaurants. Having had a fairly hectic time since November, we finally arranged a date for the end of January and booked a table for 7pm. As it was relatively early, we were the first people there, so had very attentive service from the lovely waitress. Martin started off with onion soup which was covered in plenty of cheese, his favourite. I just had a glass of white wine, my favourite!!. We then both had shoulder of lamb which was delicious. The saute potatoes and vegetables were a little on the sparse side but, as there was so much meat on the lamb, it didn’t matter. Our waitress gave us plenty of time between courses, which was much appreciated, and we then finished off the meal with an apple tart for Martin and ice cream for me, followed by coffee and chocolates. A superb meal which we always get a La Choza. If we go to a restaurant, it’s usually with a group of friends, so it made a change for just the two of us to go out and we had a really nice evening. “Thanks to the Club for choosing this restaurant for the prize." 10

PAST EVENTS Wednesday 20th January - Ladies and Gents Who Lunch Out Off to Cocomo the Juliets went (oh no it wasn’t its now KoKoMo at new premises). And very pleasant it is with large inside area and fabulous patio able to seat 200 diners. A special menu similar to Sunday lunch menu had been chosen by Maggie for the members. The original restaurant lunch is still available but now with more selection but still at low prices. All enjoyed the experience and thanks once again to Maggie for the organising. Don’t be surprised to find a club evening function arranged at this venue in the future. Seventeen Romeos also attended a new venue, The Mini India restaurant at Centro Commercial Diana. A pleasant 3 course extensive menú del día at just 9.90€ with good service. Thanks Doug for the organising, Indian restaurant visits seem to be the most popular venues for the Romeos. Saturday 20th January - Welcome Back Party Thanks to Sue and Rob for an excellent Buffet Supper. Photos By Joan Thompson

Thursday 28th January Manilva Solicitors Presentation Following the normal Thursday meeting members were introduced to Eduardo Perez Mazuecos. He then gave us an informal talk of new and important regulations governing capital gains tax and wills in Spain. He clarified members doubts and let us know where we stand legally. Thank you on this occasion for the attention of most members. Members can arrange a FREE appointment to further discuss any legal or tax issue in private. See also Manilva Solicitors advert on page 25 of the magazine. 12

PAST EVENTS Saturday 6th February Montengral ICE Club Ramble The organisers of the ICE rambles would like to remind those attending that swimming in the rivers is not encouraged. Tuesday 9th February - Pancake races and Lunch After all the cheating, pushing, biting and fights (and that was just the ladies race) we were all friendly ICE members again. Ladies winner Sandy Avis, Gents winner Dave Hodson, each receiving a prize. And then it was time for the pancake lunch, a large attendance so much hard work. Very nice they were and accompanied by a good selection of sauces and lemon slices. Thanks to Brenda, Diane, Wilma and Isabella. Also thanks to bar staff Mac, Dave and Nigel. A great lunchtime. Saturday 13th February - Valentines Dinner and Dance Well, what a glorious night! Glamorous ladies, handsome fellas, great food and some lovely songs and music to dance to. We arrived to find the tables laid and a beautiful orchid for each lady. Nearly 50 Club members crammed the dance floor to virtually every song from Mandy and her husband, Gerry, not to forget a couple of duets from our very own Terry. Well done Brenda for organising such a good night. Also a big thanks to the neli g’s crew for their excellent preparation and service of our food and Mac’s team behind the bar who kept us so well lubricated. An evening much enjoyed by all. Wednesday 17th February - Ladies and Gents Who Lunch Out This may be a record having 32 Juliets attending once again at the popular Thapa Thai restaurant. Char Lee and his staff worked well to produce an excellent meal, in very noisy but great atmosphere. Thanks again to Maggie for the organising. 19 Romeos went to a new venue for their meal, the Vice Versa gastro pub and had the choice of large meals, traditional fish ‘n’ chips or an all day breakfast also with chips. Great meals and service, we will definitely be returning. Thanks Bob for the organising. 13

Will Your Estate Planning Achieve Your Wishes? By Terry Wayne, Partner, Blevins Franks 952 799 752 terry.wayne@blevinsfranks.com As a British expatriate living in Spain, you need to think carefully about your estate planning. There a number of issues to consider: Spanish succession law, succession tax; UK inheritance tax; who you want to inherit your assets, and whether you want to retain control over when the funds are distributed. Succession law in Spain is restrictive, but as a foreign national you can opt for the succession law of your country of nationality to apply instead. It is important to note that under the 2015 EU Succession Regulation, the default position is that Spanish succession law will apply to your estate in Spain - so you need to expressly state otherwise in a will or other legal document. The EU regulation only applies to succession law, not tax. If you are resident in Spain at the date of your death or have assets in Spain, Spanish succession tax rules will continue to apply. As a UK national you probably also have UK inheritance tax (based on domicile, not residence), to contend with. Whatever your situation, you do not want much of your hard-earned wealth going to the taxman instead of your loved ones, so you need specialist advice on how to avoid or mitigate these taxes. Then there are the very important personal considerations. How do you want your assets distributed on your death? To whom? In what amounts? At what time? Do you want to give your heirs control or retain control yourself? You may, for example, want your children to receive their inheritance later in life, to help their retirement. You may wish to provide income for your grandchildren to help them pay for university, then receive the remainder of their inheritance when they are more financially mature. It is possible to structure your affairs so that the right money passes to the right hands at the right time, while reducing tax. Your estate plans also need to be flexible in case of events such as divorce or remarriage – review them regularly to make sure they are up to date with your circumstances. The solutions you use for your estate planning should therefore be tax favoured ones. And not just for inheritance tax purposes, but also during your lifetime, so that you can enjoy a tax efficient income today. Cross-border tax and estate planning is complex – you need to ensure your arrangements are compliant in both Spain and the UK. It is a specialist area and you should always get professional advice from an experienced wealth manager. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. From March 20-27 the streets of Seville, and other Spanish cities including Malaga, will be filled with thousands of medieval robed and hooded figures, processing slowly behind swaying lifesized religious effigies, accompanied by the deep thud of drums and mournful wailing of trumpets. It might sound sinister, but Semana Santa (Holy Week) is an extraordinary, mesmerising experience and constitutes one of Spain’s largest festivals. The ancient, sombre celebration of Christ’s last days, reveals a mystical side of Spain, especially at dusk, when candles are lit, and the processions take on a haunting, timeless feel. What is Semana Santa? Holy Week is a week-long celebration of pageantry, art, and raw emotion, as processions make their stately way from parish churches, cathedrals and back again. Cofradias (church brotherhoods, many dating from the 16th century) take part, each with their own much-adored Virgin Mary and Jesus statues, as well as colourful misterios (tableaux of bible scenes), on elaboratelydecorated pasos (floats). Each cofradia has numerous nazarenos (the robed, hooded figures; penitents carry crosses), taking as long period to file past. Nazarenos wear a hood, tunic and belt in their cofradia’s special colours. The capirotes (tall, pointed hoods with eye-holes) were designed so the faithful could repent in anonymity, without being recognised as self-confessed sinners. What happens in the processions? Each day, number of cofradias go out in procession, with the first starting at midday. The long line of hooded nazarenos, statues, and musicians slowly moves out of its parish church, led by a cross. As the wistful, flower-bedecked Virgin, resplendent in her goldemboidered mantle emerges, people shout “Guapa!” (Beautiful!) – it’s a moment charged with great emotion. 30

Estepona Murals. On Friday 5th February, 2016 Finola and I were shopping in Estepona when we noticed a small crowd of people gathered around the entrance to a block of apartments on the corner of Calle Terazza and Avenida De Los Reales, just across the green from the new Orchid House. We made some enquiries with those present and were told that at about 2pm there was to be a small ceremony to honour one of the artist who had painted the magnificent murals on the apartment walls, depicting trees in blossom, tall palm trees and a huge mural of a fisherman catching a large fish on a rod and reel, covering the walls of several apartment blocks. (I’m sure you have all noticed one if not all of these wonderful murals, very realistic and exquisitely detailed?) We sat at the small bar on the opposite corner having a drink and at just before 2pm, we heard the ceremony begin with a speech from a person who I believe was the Mayor (Alcaldi) of Estepona, thanking a very unassuming man standing next to him, who I presumed to be the artist. The local press was represented in the form of a cameraman, and a crowd of about 30 or 40 people had gathered. A table covered in ‘tapas’ and drinks stood close by. We mingled with the crowd, taking photographs of the artist who I discovered to be Jose Fernandez RIOS - and his work. Jose then thanked everyone for attending and he was presented with a plaque (saying: ‘Reflejos Del Jardin’ by Jose Fernandez Rios) which was to be placed on the wall of the apartment block to commemorate his work. I was able to shake Jose’s hand and thank him on behalf of the ‘extranjeros’ (foreigners) of Estepona for his magnificent works of art. I have include a couple of photographs of the occasion. Estepona is a beautiful town, made even more distinctive by the addition of wonderful murals, painted by several different artists, each with their own individual style. I have included a link to the Estepona Town Hall website listing where all the murals can be found – a fascinating walk! http://www.estepona.es/turismo/folletos-y-mapas/ruta-murales Submitted by Doug Proctor So Where Have We Been Last Month For those members who have been on either the last two visits to the chocolate factory in Rute may remember our lunch stops at Hotel Caserio de Iznajar overlooking the lake at Iznajar. Well Dave and Di Hackett invited us to join then for the hotel special Valentines evening on Saturday 13th February, and then to stay over for Dave's Birthday on the 14th. We had said on our previous lunch visits that we would like to stay at the the hotel owing to the views from its elevated position. Unfortunately the weather was against us being wet, windy and cold but there it was February. The Valentines evening was very pleasant with an excellent 4 course meal consisting of taster of different tapas for starter, followed by very tasty sea food risotto. The main course was 2 quite large Ibérico pork chops and veg, followed by profiteroles rolls for sweet. Included was all the drinks on the night all for 29.50€ each, could not be bad!!! We could have stayed for some dancing but it was now gone the midnight hour so we considered bed was calling!!! Pat and Terry Smith 31

A Costa del Sol Hospital experience. No one likes the thought of having to go into hospital, especially in a “foreign" country, but my recent experience at the Costa del Sol in Marbella re-confirmed my faith in the Spanish National Health system. I needed to go into the hospital for a minor eye operation which included an overnight stay. The down side was the long delay in waiting for a surgeon to be available some 3 months in my case. I was not aware of the enquiry service, in English, mentioned by Bob Taylor in a recent ICE magazine article, and thus had just to wait for the phone call. The next down side was the requested arrival at the hospital at 7:00 in the morning whilst it was still dark! Strangely the reporting point was the Accident and Emergency entrance. However, my name was on the admissions list and I was personally escorted to my room where all the necessary pre-operation medication, personal name tag etc were all waiting together with the usual strange surgical gown and hat. The bed was fitted with crisp white linen which would have done justice to a five star hotel. I was duly hooked up to a drip (a bit odd, I thought for an eye operation?) and given a “calming” pill. Next was a blood pressure test with a very high tech looking bit of kit which was just “ plug and play” and which read out the pressure with no pumping of bulbs, pulse checking etc. which used to be the norm. Then out of the dark appeared a lady with a torch shining on my forehead. Was this some laser marking system? No, turned out later to be another high tech way of measuring your temperature, no sucking of thermometers or probes stuck in your ear or other unmentionable places. I was eventually wheeled down to the operating theatre two floors below on my bed feeling a bit of a cheat as it was only an eye operation! There was a long wait and then the Surgeon arrived to say sorry about the delay but he was waiting for “the eye probe” GULP! After the operation, which was carried out with minimal pain or discomfort, I was wheeled back to my room still on the bed! Lunch arrived which was simple but hot and not too bad as far as hospital food is rumoured to be. Then it was eye drops every hour from very attentive nursing staff and more blood pressure and temperature measuring and eventually dinner arrived at around 8:30 in the evening. Hourly eye drops continued throughout the night and then in the morning a simple breakfast of rolls and coffee. After breakfast a nice lady appeared to say that she was the hospital translator. A little late as most of my procedure was complete but it was nice to know that the system had recognised that a foreign person was in the hospital and a translator was available if needed. Finally I visited the Consultant who confirmed that the operation had been a success and he gave me even more eye drops to be used every 3 hours until my next visit in 2 weeks’ time. Throughout the whole hospital experience, all the senior medical personnel spoke reasonable English and I did not feel at any time that I did not understand what was going on. In summary - A much better experience than anticipated and a credit to the Spanish health system. Submitted by Ron Sykes. Republished due to problem with font in last edition (editor). Some members have asked me for this recipe having made it for Thursday lunch: Wilma's Keeley’s Chocolate Torte. Done from beginning to end in 20 minutes flat. 1/2 a packet of digestive biscuits and 80 gr butter ~ blend together for the base. 600 ml cream, whisk to a floppy consistency (to blend in well the chocolate mixture below) 200 gr. 70 or 80 % chocolate ~ blend to fine crumbs 4 egg yolks, add to the chocolate 100 gr (4 tbsp.) sugar, 6 tbsp. Water, heat gently to melt the sugar, add 2 good tbsp. Brandy or liqueur Mixture should be shiny, smooth and hot to add to the floppy cream, whisking together quickly. Pour on to the biscuit base and keep over night in fridge or if in a hurry freeze for several hours and defrost for 1 hour before serving. Calories unknown! Enjoy! Wilma 32

Vic Loughran Technology Matters March 2016 Peter Dowd We continue this month with our review and advice on some of the security issues of which you need to be aware. A very useful piece of software is Rapport Trusteer, available from your bank’s website. This indicates whether you have accessed a genuine website or not. In addition to bank websites which are included by default, there is the facility to add other sites e.g. Paypal. If this software is installed, when you visit a protected website, an arrow on a green background is displayed in the address bar. This shows that the site is genuine. If you accidentally click on a link in an email and are sent to a bogus website the green arrow would not be displayed and therefore you would know that the website is a scam. We cannot remind you too often NOT to open attachments in emails from unknown sources and NEVER click on links contained in the email. If the email seems to come from a bank or other financial institution always visit the website by typing the address in the address bar. Valid financial institutions will never ask for bank details, passwords or PIN numbers There have been a number of instances of email addresses being stolen and people in the contact list being emailed and told a “hard luck” story and being asked for “donations.” As long as you follow the advice given above in 2 and never give out bank details, passwords or PINs, you should be able to stay secure. Windows 10 has introduced adverts (or “suggestions” as Microsoft prefers to call them) in the Start Menu. If these annoy you they can be turned off by right clicking the advert and selecting “Turn off all suggestions.” DVD playback can be problem if you upgraded from Windows 7 Home. In fact you are encouraged to pay £11.59 for Windows DVD Player. Save you money and instead use the free VLC media player (www.videolan.org/vlc) Find Out How Many Days Old You Are: This is really a bit of fun! www.timeanddate.com offers the facility to calculate the number of days between two dates. To do this we must move the outside two circles on the row containing four up to the second row, making this into a row of four. Then the single circle on the first row must be moved down to form the point of the triangle below the row that now contains two circles.

JUST FOR A SMILE Ever since I was a child, I've always had a fear of someone under my bed at night. So I went to a shrink and told him: “I've got problems. Every time I go to bed I think there's somebody under it. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy.”; “Just put yourself in my hands for one year, said the shrink. Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears.”; “How much do you charge?”; “Eighty dollars per visit,” replied the doctor. “I'll sleep on it,” I said. Six months later the doctor met me on the street. “Why didn't you come to see me about those fears you were having?” He asked. “Well, Eighty bucks a visit, three times a week for a year, is $12,480.00. A bartender cured me for $10.00. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought me a new pickup truck.”; “Is that so?” With a bit of an attitude he said, “and how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you?”; “He told me to cut the legs off the bed. Ain't nobody under there now.”; It's always better to get a second opinion. This months jokes submitted by Chick Danby •*I just got back from a pleasure trip. I took my mother-in-law to the airport. •*I've been in love with the same woman for 49 years. If my wife finds out, she'll kill me! •*Someone stole all my credit cards, but I won't be reporting it. The thief spends less than my wife. •*We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops. •*My Wife was at the beauty shop for two hours. That was only for the estimate. She got a mud pack and looked great for two days. Then the mud fell off.
