According to local press it was the hottest May on record, but you would not have known that from our trip to Galicia!!! Sad News. We’re very sorry to tell you that Tessa Henry died suddenly in hospital Friday 15th. May. PRESIDENT’S LETTER In the past 2 months we have had to say goodbye to Frank Hardwick and Tessa Henry. Tessa's death was a real shock to everyone and just reminds us that we must live our life to the full. The new tablecloths that we have in the Club are stain resistant, BUT, if you spill anything on them you need to clean it up or they will stain. This month some members are off to Lake Como with Aileena as the guide, I am sure they will enjoy themselves. Don't forget to book your table for the Solstice party, a free event, bring your own food for your table. Diane is organising a trip to the butterfly house and then onto Mijas for lunch. As you read this I will be in UK looking after my Grandchildren, hopefully the sun will be shining. To all of you that are returning to the UK for the summer, have a safe trip and see you when you return. Sue Potter NHS to clampdown on British expats BRITISH expats living in Spain are to be frozen out by an NHS clampdown. Many British people living abroad, regularly return to the UK for doctors’ visits or for operations, as some expats consider it to be a bureaucratic nightmare to register with local health authorities in a foreign country. However, under new regulations people will no longer be able to pop home to make the most of the NHS. The new rules will make NHS users declare where they are ‘ordinarily resident’. Free NHS treatment is provided on the basis of someone being ‘ordinarily resident’. It is not dependent upon nationality, payment of UK taxes, national insurance contributions, being registered with a GP, having an NHS number or owning property in the UK. An European agreement states that all EU citizens should receive healthcare in the country they live in, regardless of their nationality or citizenship. Expats seeking emergency treatment in the UK could also face steep fines if they don’t have paperwork from their country of residence in place. “Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea” is the Spanish equivalent of the European Health Insurance Card If you are resident in Spain, have a Spanish social security number (N o afiliación S.S.) you should apply for the Spanish equivalent of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which is the Tarjeta Sanitario Europea (TSE). If you are travelling back to the UK, or to any other European country, on holiday, on business or to visit family and friends and require medical assistance, presentation of the Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea will entitle you to receive medical assistance, free of charge. You can apply for the card online: https://sede.seg-social.gob.es/Sede_1/Lanzadera/index.htm?URL=98 or alternatively visit your nearest social security office, presenting your Spanish Tarjeta Sanitaria and they should issue you a Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea on the spot. Being a British passport holder no longer entitles you to free healthcare in the UK. Failure to present your European Health Insurance Card may result in you receiving a bill for medical treatment received. 5

PAST EVENTS

Thursday 23rd April - St Georges Day Lunch On arrival at the club at 10.30ish there was not a whiff of cooking, oh dear perhaps the gas has gone out or the oven isn't working, better have a look. On further inspection the tables were set for 70 or so people with lovely red and white table cloths, something must be happening, better go into the kitchen and see if anyone is in there, yes a whole gaggle of them just hanging around! Something wrong I asked, no, we're all ready to go, it was all done in plenty of time was the answer, ‘mmmm’ cooking for 70 and nothing happening is not what I expected, but what do I know about cooking? Answers on a postage stamp please!!!! So the morning progressed, some souls sat at their tables to have coffee before the meeting, oh there's a meeting is there, OK better come upstairs. After the meeting everyone ventured downstairs and the magical smell that greeted us was roast beef and all the trimmings. Drinks were purchased and we waited for the moment when the meal would arrive, served by Richard Wood, Rob Potter, Peter Henry and Dave Hackett (The trolley Dollies!). What a feast, roast beef, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pud's, a selection of three al dente vegetables, plus gravy, mustard and horseradish sauce, phew, it was totally delicious. A few restaurants could learn a thing or two from our wonderful ladies in the kitchen. As far as I could see it was clean plates all around and everyone looked replete, my old man says it means stuffed!! He from up a ladder should be obeyed! What's next someone asked, apple pie with either cream or custard was the answer, and there it was, with cinnamon in it, boy was it good. So after a little while it was all over for another year, so much work, 3 days, for such a wonderful meal. I'm sure you'd like to thank in no particular order, Diane Hackett, Julie Wood, President Sue Potter and of course our lovely Isabella, together with Richard Bearpark and Peter Henry on the bar, here's to the next time..... can't wait! Submitted by Margaret Loughran. Friday 24th April - Trip to Seville If you go to Seville on a day trip you know that it’s only a taster of longer, future trips. There is so much to see that half a day sightseeing does not do it justice. We arrived at 12 & left at 5, so Joan & I had decided to only do a couple of land marks. The first was the famous Metropol Parasol, it is a wooden structure located at La Encarnación square, in the old quarter. It was designed by the German architect Jürgen Mayer-Hermann and completed in April 2011 and claims to be the largest wooden structure in the world. The building is popularly known as Las Setas de la Encarnación (Incarnación's mushrooms). We paid €3 to go to the top by lift & this included a post card & a free drink from a local bar. We had 360 degree views a lovely walk way all around. The second was the Alcázar palace which is renowned as one of the most beautiful in Spain. The upper levels are still used by the royal family as the official Seville residence and the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe. The gardens were a true delight and a haven in the midst of a busy city. It was Feria week and we saw lots of beautiful people in traditional dress both walking & riding in the horse-drawn carriages, yet we had no problem with queues or restaurant service and as the day was overcast it was great for walking around without getting over-heated. Thanks to Joan Thompson for organizing a fantastic day out. Submitted by Linda Shelley 7

Saturday 25th April - Love and Marriage Fun Evening A great time for a laid back and relaxing kind of night out, after all love and fun are the main ingredients for a happy marriage. Three brave couples had agreed to be the volunteer contestants (guinea pigs oops!) ready to reveal how well they were tuned to their partners. We waited eagerly to learn their secrets. Example Questions: Wife’s favourite Garden Plant? Husbands choice of underpants? Who would a wife choose to kiss, Rod Stewart, Bruce Forsyth or Sean Connery? (Do any of the guys still have their own hair and teeth?) As the evening rolled on it became clear these pairs were on a learning curve. Bravely they soldgered on with a deciding set of questions, and the participants, Kate and John, Tessa and Peter, with Sue and Rob finally emerging as the winners! Well done Julie and Richard for a very interesting evening, we all went home smiling, 10/10 for your very diplomatic questions and for that very professional sound booth. Submitted by Christina Woodward Tuesday May 12th – Garden Club Meeting The Garden Club members held their second meeting this year the I.C.E clubhouse. Four members had given their apologies for not attending but the seven that did enjoyed an interesting morning. The discussion was mainly about cuttings – when to take them, how to take them plus how to ensure their growth etc. Questions were also asked re pruning. Some gardening problems were brought up and hopefully solved. Several plants, cuttings and seeds brought along by some of the members were shared out. Empty pots had been offered to the Garden Club and were gratefully accepted. Sandy asked the members whether any of them would like to take a turn at running the Garden Club but all seemed happy with the way things are. Tip of the month: A nifty way to sow seeds is to put them in an empty half eggshell filled with compost and then placed back in the cardboard egg box. Once the seedlings appear, place the carton in the ground. The eggshell and box will disintegrate and also help to nourish the soil with its minerals, acting like a natural fertiliser. Submitted by Sandy Avis Wednesday 13th May - Ramblers Annual BBQ The annual barbecue was attended by 11 walkers and 7 non walkers, so quite a quiet affair. The walkers set off at 11am, 30 minutes later than the time I said as my better half (???) had told people 11!!! I have not done this walk for 5 years so I hoped I could remember the way, as it was I cut off too early so missed 2 hills out, what a relief. Arrived back at camp at 1.20pm, 20 minutes late! What a sight was beheld, a table with a candelabra, plants, proper cutlery and wine glasses, obviously at the wrong event! Rob and his helpers then started the BBQ, wine flowed and a good time was had by all.

Should you have suggestions for any event or activity at your clubhouse, or for a trip whether for a day or longer period, please contact a member of the committee. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT 8

Sunday 3rd May - 6 day Holiday Trip to Galicia Day 1 Sunday 3rd May - Costa del Sol to Galicia

Our coach collected us at the usual pick-up points for our transfer to Malaga airport for our direct flight to Santiago de Compostela. There our coach took us to 0 Grove and the family run Hotel Villa Juanita. As we had had quite a journey it was straight to the restaurant for a welcome supper. As our normal guide Danny was unavailable we met our replacement Daniel, a very pleasant Swedish guy, and he informed us that due to bad weather forecast for next day the boat trip had been re-arranged for Thursday. So then off to our most welcome beds.

Day 2 Monday 4th May - Walk the area and free time

After breakfast Daniel arranged a walk in 0 Grove, the town, harbour and waterside. Their we saw many locals standing up to their bottoms in the sea harvesting clams, pleasure or punishment we were not sure. Unfortunately this is where the weather changed drastically into heavy rain so we all dispersed to various local cafes for shelter. As it was approaching lunch time the decision was taken for free time and meet up later for dinner.

Day 3 Tuesday 5th May - Vigo, Pontevedra and Combarro

Submitted by Sally Holloway

We left O Grove at 9.30 to drive the roughly 70 km south to Vigo, the biggest city of Galicia in terms of population and its main port. On the way Daniel gave us a potted history of the region, featuring Phoenicians, Celts, Iberians, Vikings, Romans, Visigoths and Moors (though not necessarily in that order). Those of us who were still awake were aware of passing through the provincial capital, Pontevedra, as it was low tide and the smell from the river was less than fragrant. Both Pontevedra and Vigo are constructed from the local granite, and so the first impression is rather grey and forbidding, even more so if the weather is overcast, as it was that day. But Vigo is full of sculptures and green spaces, which Ana, our local guide, pointed out as we took the panoramic city tour. One of the most striking statues is “Os Cabalos” (the horses) by Juan José Oliveira, a son of Galicia whose legacy can be seen in his many works which adorn the city and other towns (it says in Google). First and foremost Vigo is a working city, as we could see from the huge Peugeot Citroen factory, which is the largest employer, and the port, which covers more than 20 kilometres. As we crossed the Rande Bridge which spans the Vigo ría Ana told us about the battle of Rande which took place in 1702 in the very spot we were passing over. As we all know, this was soon after the beginning of the Wars of the Spanish Succession, and the ships of the Anglo-Dutch alliance saw an opportunity to intercept the Spanish treasure fleet as it returned from South America laden with silver and merchandise. The pirates (us) scored an overwhelming victory over the Spanish and French, and a good deal of that treasure is thought to be still lying in the deep water of the ría. I´m not sure that they´ve forgiven us, or Sir Francis Drake, who sacked the town in 1589. That may help explain why the Spanish don´t seem to see us as the good guys of history that we all know we were. If Ana harboured any resentment, she didn´t let it show. Our first stop was at Monte del Castro, a park located around an ancient Celtic fortification at an altitude of 133 metres. There were fantastic views of the port, the ría, the islands in the estuary, so it afforded an excellent photo opportunity. Then we drove through the city, taking in the Parque Municipal with its Pazo (palace), which now houses the Museo Quiñones de León and has wonderful ornamental gardens. Our second stop was at Samil Beach, which is 1,700 metres long and has the sort of fine white sand we can only dream of on the Costa del Sol. From there you can see the Cíes Islands, whose Rodas beach has been reported as one of the best in the world by the Telegraph (so it must be true). The one chiringuito that was near enough for us to visit for a coffee and a comfort stop had a beautiful glassed-in terrace but unfortunately too few waiters for this sudden rush of customers, so some of us had to leave after 30 minutes without our much-needed shot of caffeine. Then it was back to the centre, where the coach left us by the ultra-modern shopping centre just near the P & O ship Aurora was docked. Ana led us across the pedestrian bridge to the Plaza de la Constitución in the old town, and pointed out where we could buy oysters from the street sellers and take them into one of the many restaurants to eat, which apparently is quite acceptable in Vigo, as long as you buy a drink. I´ve never tried it, but I don´t think it would go down too well in Estepona. After lunch and shopping we got back on the coach and headed for the tiny port of Combarro, a historic village situated on the ría of Pontevedra. It features in all the tourist guides because of the picturesque way the houses are built directly onto the granite along the water´s edge, and because of the unusually large number of typical Galician hórreos. >>10

<<11 These are grain stores which are built on stone pillars to prevent attack by damp and rodents, and they are adorned with crosses and symbols of fertility. Because of their size and shape you might well mistake them for a novel if rather macabre way of storing the dear departed in readiness for judgement day. Combarro attracts so many visitors that almost every building along the ría houses a bar or gift shop, so there were opportunities to both try and buy the local orujo or liqueur and other delicacies. Then back to our hotel in O Grove. Day 4 Wednesday 6th May - Albarifio wine Today it was off to the most appreciated wine region in the area, Albarino. During a tour of the bodegas our guide explained the history of this wine, its production and finally a taste of two of their favourites. The wine is particular to this part of Galicia and goes very well with all the local Foods. Once done here we continued to nearby Isla de Aruosa, one of the picturesque Galician islands in the ria, free time for a walk and coffee before we returned to O Grove for lunch in welcoming sun! Day 5 Thursday 7th May- ‘Noddy Train’ Trip and Boats, Mussels, Ribeiro Wine and more. On the penultimate day of our Galician trip we woke up to better weather and set off down to the ‘Noddy’ tourist train for a trip around O'Grove and then onto the Isla de la Toja. This is a very upmarket island with a Grand Hotel, golf course and houses owned by rich people. There is also a pretty church whose walls are covered by shells. The train dropped us back at the port where we boarded a boat, which took us out to the mussel beds. There we were shown how the mussels, clams etc are grown on ropes. One of the crewman demonstrated feeding the seagulls with mussels. The seagulls did a sort of flypast and pecked the mussels out of his hand that was quite exciting. While we were watching, mussels were being steamed and soon we were eating boxes and boxes of mussels plus drinking bottles and bottles of local Ribeiro. Then the music started and we were off. Partying with several Spanish tourists as well. Some pole dancing was attempted, no names no pack drill. We were having such a good time we didn't notice that the boat was back in port and it was time to get off. Our Swedish guide Daniel was surprised at our capacity to have a good time. We all needed a more solid lunch and a siesta to get ready for the evening party Joan had planned with the hotel owners. They had arranged a Queimada party. This is the 'fire drink' of Galicia made mainly with orujo, a strong liqueur similar to grappa put in a fireproof bowl and set fire to. Most of the alcohol is burned off but it remains a very strong drink. Before we had this drink we had a 4 course meal plus copious wine and a rather nice Santiago cake soaked in port. Toasts were made with pink Cava. Our guide obliging dressed up as a witch, pranced around and read out a long Spanish speech to ward off devils and the like. Then more dancing to end a very active day. Thank you Joan for organising these fun events. Submitted by Sheila Defries Day 6 Friday 8th May - Santiago de Compostela and return After breakfast, we checked out of Hotel saying "adios" to O Grove. We take a full day visit, including an optional official guided tour in the cultural, religious and administrative capital of Galicia: Santiago de Compostela. Being destination of pilgrims it is a stunning city of granite, with a spectacular cathedral and a beautiful old quarter. Most visited the cathedral then time for lunch in one restaurants of the local streets (e.g. Rua do Franco, albeit nothing to do with the dictator) and free time in the afternoon. Some just relaxed in the very comfortable Parador Hotel lounge, others took the ‘Noddy Train’ tour of the old quarter. Then back on the coach for transfer back to Santiago airport. Our coach was waiting for us at Malaga airport to take us safely back home in early hours of the morning. Don’t forget many photo’s can be seen by visiting the club website. 10

Friday 15th May - Murder Mystery - Come Die With Me A chilling welcome to a murder was soon warmed up with hot spicy Indian meal supplied by an outside caterer and very nice it was too. So off we went to witness the dastardly deed and to be honest it could have been any one of five participants as the later voting proved. The scene was set in the comfortable home of Penelope Simpson on the final evening of the village ‘Come Dine With Me’ competition. We encounter a colourful mix of guests, all of them with various shady pasts which soon started to be revealed as the production progressed. At the end we all had a chance to interview all suspects, did this help, not a chance! Thanks to The International Theatre Studio for their very good presentation, and to event organiser Sue who had a very busy day and into the night with all her hard working helpers, and to Doug and Ted on the bar. 13

The New UK Pension Regime By Terry Wayne, Partner, Blevins Franks 952 799 752 terry.wayne@blevinsfranks.com The new UK “pension freedom” came into effect on 6th April, providing new opportunities for retirees. This is a significant change, and all very new, and many expatriates may not realise how they are affected. First of all, the new freedom is not for all pensions – it does not apply to defined benefit (final salary) schemes, public sector, state pensions or annuities. Most options only apply to defined contribution schemes, i.e. money purchase schemes such as personal pensions, SIPPS, executive pension plans etc. The government is considering ways for greater flexibility for annuities. You can transfer from a defined benefit to a defined contribution scheme or QROPS, but may lose valuable benefits so consider it carefully. You can only transfer if you have taken advice from a pension transfer specialist regulated by the UK Financial Conduct Authority. Secondly, even if you have a defined contribution scheme, you do not have to do anything. You can leave your pension as it is, and continue to receive regular income through income drawdown. Indeed, not all such schemes will offer the new flexibility. Transferring to a new plan could involve a loss of guarantees or valuable options. Not all providers accept non UK residents. Even if you do want to act now, explore all your options, and the tax and long-term consequences, before taking a decision. What does ‘pension freedom’ mean? You can do almost whatever you like with your funds. Besides income drawdown, you could take the whole lot as cash in one go; you could make withdrawals as and when you want, with the balance remaining invested, or take a lump sum now and then start income at a later date. You could also buy an annuity. If you do choose to take all or much of your fund as cash, ensure you have a reliable plan for your long-term financial security. It is important to think about the tax implications, especially for larger funds. UK taxpayers receive 25% tax free, but other income/withdrawals are taxed at their marginal rate of income tax. Spanish residents will pay Spanish tax according to the local rules. Most pension income is taxed at the scale rates of income tax, up to 49% here in Andalucía. Lump sums are not tax free and the taxable amount is charged at the savings tax rates of 20% - 24%. Cash withdrawn from a pension fund also loses protection from UK inheritance tax. Specialist tax advice is therefore very important. Many QROPS cannot yet provide full flexibility on withdrawals. The rule where 70% of the transfer value made to a QROPS must provide an income for life currently remains in place for non-EU QROPS. The 55% death tax is abolished, but if you die over age 75 your beneficiaries will still pay tax, at their marginal rate on income or currently at 45% on lump sums. This also applies to annuities, but not final salary schemes. This is a brief, generalised summary. Seek personalised, expert advice. Getting it wrong could be very costly. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. Scam of the Month June 2015 Fake policemen Research from Which? showed 5% of travellers have encountered someone posing as a policeman in the last two years. You may think you would never fall foul of a fake 'Bobby', but these scammers are confident, cocky and prepared to take advantage of your relaxed holiday mood. Plain-clothed 'policemen' will ask holidaymakers to see their passport or drivers licence and even ask for cash, on the pretence that you fit a suspect's description. They then run off with your passport and/or money. Ask to see their documents before handing anything over, and also ask for their station's phone number so you can call through to verify their status. Sometimes these fraudsters will work in pairs, so one can distract you while the other steals your wallet/passport. Although you may feel intimidated, be prepared to stand your ground and assure them you will cooperate fully once you are satisfied they are who they say. Another funny phone call. The phone rings, the number starts with a 2, OK we can have some fun here. Vic picks up the phone, hello, yes we have windows. We have 7 or 8 and we're thinking of installing 10. Can you send your brochure, we'd be interested in UPVC ones... Oh sorry, thought you were selling windows. Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep End of conversation. Next day, phone goes, number 2 again. Himself picks up the phone, oh yes, oh really, no you don't say, well actually I don't have a computer. Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep End of conversation. And so it goes on. Until the next time!!! Frazzled Margaret Loughran These were real phone calls from someone pretending to try to help us. Beware! They are out to get personal details from you. Paddy was working at the fish plant in Cork when he accidentally cut off all 10 of his fingers. He went to the emergency room in Cork’s hospital. The doctor looked at Paddy and said, 'Lets be avin' da fingers and I'll see what oi can do'. Paddy said, 'Oi haven't got da fingers.' 'Whadda ya mean you haven't got da fingers? Lord Tunderin' Jesus, it's 2012! We's got microsurgery and all kinds of incredible techniques. I could have put dem back on and made you like new! Why didn't ya bring da fingers?!?' And Paddy said, ' How da heck was I 'spose to pick them up !!!

Grey Nomading in Australia Continued, Diary of Louise and Grahams Travels. Many of the club members will have met Margaret and Vic’s daughter Louise and her husband Graham when they visited from Australia for the occasion of Margaret and Vic’s Golden Wedding Anniversary Celebrations. Lou and Graham are now taking a 2 year working tour, known as Grey Nomading in Australia, by caravan. "Grey Nomads:" many Aussie's travel around Australia when they retire. Sorry for the delay in Travel Diaries, we've been busy having fun! Headed to Vacy in NSW for our next housesit. Really lovely spot. Stunning property with 2 cats, 2 dogs and wildlife everywhere. Graham spending his birthday on the ride-on mower, having a ball, couldn’t wipe the smile off his face for ages! Graham also was in heaven as there was a massive veggie patch for him to play in, to be honest with the mowing, watering and veggie garden, I didn’t see much of him. We just so enjoyed the peace and tranquillity. All the animals were a delight to spend time with and the home owners were so welcoming, and we stayed on for a week after their return and we are now firm friends. Next off to Maitland for a 9 day house sit on a massive 1940’s house with stunning views of the Hunter river. One vicious outdoor cat, eight chooks, one koolie cattle dog, a foxy terrier and Cooper – the world’s biggest and slobbiest boxer dog! We had a great stay and I had a ball walking all 5 dogs every day – challenging but fun! Then headed off to Paterson for a couple of nights at a caravan stop – BIG STORM!!! Caravan stop is on the banks of the Paterson River and ended up rising to 15 foot of flood water, very luckily our good friends in Vacy gave us a call and came to the rescue, so yet again we stayed with them. We were all stranded in Vacy for a few days as the floods had swept bridges and roads away. We pooled our food and alcohol and had a couple of days without electricity, mobile or internet, although feeling lucky that there was no major damage, as Dungog just up the road looked like a war zone, houses floated away and over 80 families are now homeless. Left Vacy and are now in Wollun NSW, very rural but not far to Armidale. I’d like to say we are doing a house sit but the home owners house burnt down last year and is currently being rebuilt, so we are in the shed, along with a 5 month old black Labrador pup, a cat, a kitten and a fish!! Outside is a Shetland pony, 8 chooks, two ducks and a rabbit!!! I'm apparently allergic to the rabbit and spent my first day here with both eyes so swollen they closed – guess Graham will be dealing with ‘bugs’ from now on!! We are off the grid here and the power all comes from solar, which charges a massive bank of batteries. If it is cloudy for a couple of days we have to charge the batteries from the diesel generator for an hour or so. Please pray for sunshine!! Till next time. Lou and Graham

JUST FOR A SMILE Parking Officers Funeral As the coffin was being lowered into the ground at a Parking Officers funeral, a voice from inside screams "I'm not dead, I'm not dead. Let me out!" The Vicar smiles, leans forward sucking air through his teeth and mutters "Too late pal, I've already done the paperwork" Submitted by Joanna Mitchell Real Life Shades of Greying….. Back and forth…..Back and forth…..In and out…..In and out…..A little to the right…..A little to the left Her head twisting this way then that…..She could feel the sweat on her forehead….. Between her breasts…..And, trickling down the small of her back…..She was getting near to the end. He was in ecstasy…..with a huge smile on his face as his wife moved…..Forwards then backwards. Forward then backward…..Again…..and, again…..Her heart was pounding now….. Her face was flushed…..She moaned…..softly at first, then began to groan louder….. Finally…..totally exhausted…..she let out a piercing scream…..She shouted: "OK, OK, you smug obnoxious man…..I can't parallel park…..You do it!" Advice for an old member....
