Editorial: At the time you read this at the beginning of July Pat and I will be enjoying meeting up again with family and friends back in the UK. I would like to thank Vic for distribution of the magazine at the club during my absence. I just hope I have ordered enough magazines for this period, for 3 months past I was unfortunately throwing away around 100 uncollected copies, so last month, to save on club expenses, I reduced the number printed and lo and behold all were gone in 2 weeks. So I apologise if you did not get your copy. Have a great summer and we will see you all soon. Regards

Terry Smith

PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR I.C.E club is managed and run entirely by volunteers, including catering and bar staff, event organisers and your voted committee. All those that have volunteered say ‘it is a great way to make new friends.’ Why not get involved? FACT: Without volunteers the club could not exist.

President’s Letter Recently we have had to say our last goodbye to Barbara Blackburn, a lovely lady who was very grateful for all that the Club did for her and Eric, our thoughts are with Eric and family at this very sad time. As I write this I hear there are warnings in parts of Malaga re the heat, here in UK we have flood warnings, roll on mid July when we return to Spain. We have a new club trip in July, to go and see the dolphins in Gibraltar, do please support this trip, there will be plenty of time for shopping and lunch. If you're like me and suffer from sea sickness don't worry we only stay in the bay and I loved it. At this time of the year all club events are winding down so please consult your magazine calendar to when your event stops in July. We will be having three Thursday lunches out in July and August. The Club will be open every Thursday during July and August. Please be aware of fire risks when out and about and always wear sun cream and a hat. Those of you that are spending the summer not in Spain, enjoy your time away and hopefully see you in September for the welcome back party. Sue REALLY SAD NEWS. We are so sad to tell you that Barbara Blackburn died during morning of Sunday 12th June while at home with Eric, her son Keith and her granddaughter. Our thoughts go to all family and friends. Barbara was a long time member of I.C.E. and along with Eric attended many events. BALANCE The older we get we seem to loose our balance more often and this then often results in a fall. We are told more accidents happen at home than anywhere else so have a good look round and be aware of any danger spots where you could trip and loose your balance - especially if you live alone. Avoid putting mats on marble floors - especially bath mats. Wear sensible house shoes - not flip-flops or mules. The most sensible house shoes are Flossies. They have non-slip rubber soles and if they get a bit loose they can be washed which tightens them up again. Avoid carrying heavy weights down stairs - always have one hand free to hold on with! If you need to reach something high up don't use a chair! A little folding metal ladder with one step and a platform topped by a handrail is the safest for us oldies. If you need to reach anything higher get someone to help you! A good exercise to improve your balance is to see how long you can stand on one leg without loosing it. If you fix your eyes on a stationary object a few feet in front of you at eye level this will help your balance but be sure you are near something to grab if you loose it! DON'T TRY TIGHTROPE WALKING!! Submitted by Anne Hardwick

PAST EVENTS Sunday 22 May - ICE Players Concert The Club Players brought together a concert of the real skills and talents of Club members, broadly after the fashion of the Leeds Variety Theatre’s ‘Good Old Days’, albeit without the need for makebelieve ‘old’ or a gavel to announce the next act. But, apart from the authenticity of the ‘experience’ of the stars of the show, it had the music, the turns and the master of ceremonies, John, who managed the timely announcements without too much alliteration, and whose skills and jokes glossed over any technical hitches! Throughout, the curtains were operated by Margaret and Avril, while Steve handled the many props, and looking after the lighting and the music were Keith and Cheryth. This review should be entitled ‘When the Cat’s away . . .’ because what we saw was not wholly as planned by the producer, Anne Hardwick. Days before the show, Anne snook off and left the cast to fend for itself. Not normally given to desertion, Anne only took time out to spend a few days in hospital to get needed attention. And she was there, on the night, in the audience, and able to receive the thanks of us all who, by the end, had forgiven the mice (mainly electronic!) for their play. The show started with a musical skit by the Woods, a duet in top hats and tails, fashionably distressed, of course, singing almost entirely, ‘We’re a couple of swells’. Julie and Richard’s hopes for tea at the Potter’s were finally dashed and were followed by an elegant rendition of The Lady of Shallot by Trish Marr, suitably dressed for the part in Medieval costume. Let’s allow the few technical hiccups to rest quietly in their laptop and disregard the slight change in order of the items. The plan was that Adrian and Marian would then ‘Say Something Stupid’ as two Sinatra's had done a year of so ago. And so they did! . . . like, ‘we loved you’. Martin and Cindy’s sketch about a restaurant customer (Martin) who orders a tricky dish and threatens to do a male strip show while Cindy waits and wonders, and this led on to Adrian, topped with cloth cap, who regaled us faultlessly with the story of Albert and the Lion, as only a Lancastrian can. The first half was closed by the sultry Lyn and her ‘Million Dollar Secret’ and an unusual Barbershop Quartet of Malcolm, Adrian and Richard who found themselves in ‘The Foggy, Foggy Dew’. In the absence of Sonny and Cher, the second half opened with Doug and Yvonne’s, ‘I’ve got you, Babe.’ Love and peace, both. Doug, you can now get your hair cut. Adrian returned to the stage to give us another delightful monologue of Part Two of Albert’s trip to the zoo. The final line of parental advice need not be taken literally. Stanley Holloway, eat your heart out! Thee’s got competition, lad. Marian, Freddie and Patricia stood in for a has-been Swedish group and sang ‘Super Trouper’ before Sue put Jacqui, Angela and Barbara through their paces with a keep fit routine to ‘All that Jazz’. We were all exhausted just watching! We got our breath back while we heard how Martin M searched for the right key to a maiden’s (Steve’s, I presume!) ‘Chastity Belt’. He had no trouble hitting the right notes on the guitar, though. As a tribute to the change of season, the concert closed with Lyn, accompanied on guitar by Martin M, in a dreamy ‘Summertime’, Yvonne singing ‘Here Comes Summer’, Marian with ‘Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer’ and the whole cast joining together ‘. . . all going on a Summer Holiday’. No concert (or should that be ‘pantomime’?) is complete without a little audience participation and with the help of a board and easel, we all enjoyed being ‘Beside the seaside, beside the sea.’ The cast presented Anne with some flowers (was that in apology or to welcome her back out of hospital?) President Sue thanked everyone for their efforts in producing the best concert yet, with every act being excellent, and led the appreciation of all of us in the usual way. PAST EVENT Wednesday 25th May - Trip to Castellar Zoo www.zoodecastellar.es/english/ The short bus ride to Pueblo Nuevo gave us the opportunity for an early but welcome cup and coffee and for me to nip into Waitrose for some fruit pastilles - much loved by my granddaughters. Then on through wonderful countryside to Castellar Zoo. Many of us purchased a small bag of food to throw into some of the animal pounds or feed directly out of our palms to goats, ducks etc. The weather was perfect - not too hot and not too cold - as one of the three bears said - and, speaking of bears, we were able to cuddle a small, furry honey-coloured honey bear. He was fast asleep as he is nocturnal. A young black panther and a young ocelot were being walked around on leads and we were able to stroke them; the six month old panther was very lively and more than a handful. The lone penguin is always good for a laugh but some of us weren't too keen on holding snakes even though one wrapped himself around my handbag straps! The resident vet gave us a guided tour and was very informative. All the animals have been rescued from adverse conditions such as private collections, customs seizures and the black market. There were 2 young lions but the white tiger surprised me most as, in February, he was on a lead and being stroked but now he is huge and in a large enclosure with another tiger. A parrot show ended our visit, then on to lunch through the beautiful scenery to Venta Las Acacias (in the middle of nowhere) where we had a very filling and delicious menu del dia. A very good day out. Thanks to organiser Di and to Joan for taking over. Further Photos can be seen on website www.siberme.com Further past event can be seen on page 26 Submitted by Patricia Gommersoll Saturday, 28th May - Live Country Music The Texas Pearls paid another visit to the Club and entertained us all with their repertoire of well known and much loved Country and Western songs. Dancing started immediately and didn't stop until the last note was played. As usual, with an American Supper, there was an enormous and varied spread of food and nobody went hungry and, what was left over, was rapidly consumed

during Sunday lunchtime. Many thanks to Tracy for a very well organised event. She had obviously worked very hard during the day, ably assisted, I understand, with some very willing volunteers, and was in the club again first thing on Sunday morning, putting everything back. I think she must have secretly stayed overnight!! Thanks also to the bar staff who, as always, kept us well supplied with drinks as well as clearing up afterwards. It was a great evening, full of fun and laughter and I, for one, am already looking forward to seeing the Texas Pearls at the club again. Submitted by Stephanie Monahan 8

PAST EVENT

Tuesday 14th June - The Garden Club meeting at the Orchid Domes in Estepona There was a very good attendance. The entrance fee of 3 Euros is well worth the amazing spectacle of orchids plus so many other plants, shrubs and cacti. It is all very tropical with plants in all types of cork containers attached or hanging from various branches and walls. The waterfall was a beautiful sight and quite cooling when standing near as it was a very humid environment. Unfortunately, had we been half an hour later two other waterfalls would have been turned on. However, we had been lucky to almost have the place to ourselves until midday when a queue formed – obviously they knew all three waterfalls would be in operation. After a nice slow meander among so many beautiful sights, it was time to leave and go for a much needed drink. We found a nice bar quite close to the domes and sat in the shade enjoying each others company with the very pretty backdrop of the many murals all around us. We discussed further meetings and decided not to have one in July and August but Sandy suggested that now that it seems easier to go in and go out of Gibraltar, it could be a good idea to visit the Botanical Gardens say at around 3.00 pm and then wander up to the Rock Hotel for afternoon tea. This seemed to be accepted as a good idea so nearer the time a date will be confirmed. Tip of the month: To avoid an ant invasion, grow a lavender bush - ants hate the distinctive aroma given off during flowering. Similarly many insects do not like spices and will never cross a line of curry powder or cayenne pepper should you sprinkle it around your flower beds. Submitted by Sandy Avis 9

PAST EVENTS Wednesday 15th June - Ladies and Gents Who Like To Lunch Out Many Juliets made a welcome return to an old favourite The Arroyo Hondo Restaurant on the Casares Road. Many changes on the patio since the last visit, the pool has now been boxed in making a nice decked area with settees for comfortable relaxing. As is usual good food and service provided on a lovely sunny day, Thanks to Maggie for the organising. Lucky thirteen Romeos continued onto Casares to a new venue to them Casa Curro on the main top road near the bus stop. It is the first restaurant on the left after passing the bus stop, ample parking. The restaurant has a front terrace, we opted to sit in the back room that has panoramic views overlooking the village, down the valley all the way, to the coast, fantastic. However on the back wall, that has a long sheer drop, we all wondered how the satellite disk had been fixed, visions of man hanging out window being held by his belt. Extensive menu del dia for just 10€, bottle of wine for 5€, could not be faulted. Food and service, considering the restaurant was very busy, was very good, highly recommended if you want a trip out, especially if you have visitors, to see the view. No organising this time we just turned up! Saturday 18th June - Summer Party at Restaurant Kokomo Around a hundred, well dressed in all their finery, members and guests attended at the popular Kokomo Restaurant. A really great welcome to those who made their own way and for those that arrived in style by charabanc, ’The Buz’, a nice glass of champers or a beer. Some then explored the delightful garden before taking their seats for a very pleasant 3 course meal served very efficiently. Music was excellently chosen by Mandy, both in the background during the meal, and then for dancing, we can really bop! This was a great choice of restaurant for the event and sure we will want to return again for a future event. Thanks go to Maggie for the organising that we know caused some anxious moments. And thanks to Sally and all the pleasant staff at Kokomo. Music by Great summer evening. Mandy & Gerry

What You Need To Know About Succession And Gift Tax By Terry Wayne, Partner, Blevins Franks, 952 799 752, terry.wayne@blevinsfranks.com If you live in Spain or have Spanish assets, it is likely that your heirs, or even you, will be affected by succession and gift tax at some point. With the right knowledge and careful planning, you can take steps to make sure your legacy goes to the right place. First you should get to know some of the key features of the Spanish system. It is the recipient, not the donor who pays Unlike the UK, where tax is paid before an inheritance or gift changes hands, in Spain tax is paid by the person on the receiving end. This happens if either the recipient or the inheritance/gift is based in Spain. So if you leave your Spanish property or assets to UK resident children, they will pay tax on it. Or if you are resident in Spain and receive an inheritance from the UK, you will pay Spanish succession tax. Tax is payable within six months after the date of death, even if the funds are not immediately accessible. This could make it difficult for some heirs to pay their succession tax bill. Your spouse and children are not exempt Where a couple are both Spanish residents and one dies, the surviving spouse can be liable on the inheritance. If they then pass the inheritance on, say, to children, succession tax will be payable again on the second death. While there are allowances under the state rules, they are just €15,957 for spouses, descendants and ascendants, €7,993 for other close relatives (which generally includes stepchildren) and nil for everyone else. What is payable depends on the region State tax rates range from 7.65% to 34%. Additional charges based on your relationship with the recipient and their net worth could increase this to 82% in extreme cases. However, each Autonomous Community has the right to amend the state rules, and many of them do. In Andalucía, spouses and children can receive a 100% exemption for inheritances valued up to €175,000 in certain circumstances, provided their pre-existing wealth is no more than €402,678. Seek advice for how this may apply to you. You could still face UK inheritance tax As a British expatriate resident in Spain, you may still be domiciled in the UK and therefore fully liable to both UK inheritance and Spanish succession tax. However, succession tax paid in Spain can be deducted from UK liability on the same asset to avoid double taxation. Ultimately, it is important to understand the succession tax rules and how they apply to your situation, as well as how they affect any UK liability. This is a specialist area, so take professional, personalised advice to get it right and potentially save your heirs a considerable amount of tax. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. DID YOU KNOW GARDENING IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH............................? Gardening can reduce your risk of a stroke (along with other activities like jogging and swimming) Gardening burns calories. Gardening is considered a moderate to high-intensity exercise. You can burn up to 330 calories during just one hour of light gardening. 30 to 45 minutes of gardening three to five times a week is a good strategy. Heavy gardening is not only helpful in weight maintenance but also in reducing the risk of heart disease and other life threatening diseases. Just 30 minutes a few times a week (if you can) will prevent and control high blood pressure. Gardening decreases the likelihood of osteoporosis. When you dig, plant, weed, and engage in repetitive tasks that require strength or stretching, all of the major muscle groups are getting a good work out. Gardening is a stress buster. As a matter of fact, it may be an even more effective stress buster than other leisure activities. Two groups of students were told to either read indoors or garden for thirty minutes AFTER completing a stressful task. The group that gardened reported being in a better mood than the group that read. And they also exhibited lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. Being surrounded by flowers improves one’s health. Flowers are a natural and healthful moderator of moods and have an immediate impact on happiness, long term positive effects on mood, and make for more intimate connections between individuals Gardening is a way of making meaning out of our lives. Being in the garden and feeling a profound connection to the land affords us the opportunity to focus on beauty and inspires us to experience feelings of awe and gratitude. The act of gardening enables us to enter the ‘zone’ - a sort of altered state of consciousness – similar to what a jogger or one who practices yoga or mediation can experience. This transcendent state is a magical and spiritual place where one experiences the best of who she or he is. Gardening may lower the risk of dementia. Some research suggests that the physical activity associated with gardening can help lower the risk of developing dementia. Two separate studies that followed people in their 60s and 70s for up to 16 years found, respectively, that those who gardened regularly had a 36% and 47% lower risk of dementia than non-gardeners, even when a range of other health factors were taken into account Gardening strengthens your immune system. While you’re outdoors basking in the sun, you’ll also soak up plenty of vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium. In turn, calcium helps keep your bones strong and your immune system healthy. It is quite a sociable morning why not come and join us? 9.45am for 10.00 start,16 ends for just 8€ each, includes hire of woods if required. Dress code is predominately white but the critical factor is footwear, shoes must be smooth soled with no ’pimples or crinkles’. The Management at Benavista strictly apply this rule. Drinks and food available at the bar. Beginners, novices or your guests are always welcome. We have recently had new bowlers join us and given instruction during the mornings play, we are not serious bowlers, just out for a mornings enjoyment and exercise. All bowlers, past and present, wish to thank Reg Astle for all his organising over the past years. Reg and Sheila are moving back to the UK during July to be nearer their family. We wish them all the best for the future. We will miss Reg’s counters that are used for determining teams and lanes (many being missing and causes some confusion each week). Audrey Jinks and Terry Smith will share and take over the organising. 28

Matters July / August 2016 Do you constantly use your mobile to telephone friends and relations on a regular basis? If so, you will probably find that WhatsApp helps to defray the costs. You can download it to your Android, iPhone or Windows Phone from the appropriate App Store. The downside is that you must have internet access to use it. The cost of phone calls and text messages to anywhere in the world is ₏0! Both the caller and receiver must be using WhatsApp. You do not even have to create a new list of contacts as the app will search your existing contact list and display under the WhatsApp contact list those people who already are already using WhatsApp. If you send a text message you can even see when it has been read. Receipt of a text message is confirmed by two blue ticks appearing alongside the message. In addition to basic messaging WhatsApp users can create groups, send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages. Why not give it a try. More information is available at www.whatsapp.com Ad Blockers stop those invasive advertisements appearing on your devices. Download F-Secure Ad blocker for iPhone and iPad from the App Store. An alternative is Adblock (Plus) which can be downloaded for all devices and browsers. Do you have a problem keeping your software up-to-date on your PC? If so, one answer is to download PatchmyPC from www.patchmypc.net. One click will update all outdated programs on your PC. When you first run the program, go to Options and click Create a Desktop Shortcut. This will then provide a quick access to run the program in the future. Please note: There is a limited list of programs which will be updated. These are displayed in the panel on the left of the opening screen. If you have any programs which are installed and not in this list, you will have to update them manually. Downloads – General Advice. We advise to avoid downloading from cnet.com. The Club Welcomes New Members: Richard Burnett May Berry Larry Berry Advice From Tech Support Dear Tech Support: Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a slow down in the performance of the flower and jewellery applications that had operated flawlessly under the Boyfriend 5.0 system. In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.9, but installed undesirable programs such as NFL 7.4, NBA 3.2 and NHL 4.1. Conversation 8.0 also no longer runs and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. I've tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do? Signed, Desperate *************************** Dear Desperate: First, keep in mind that Boyfriend 5.0 was an entertainment package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system. Try to enter the command C:/I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME and install Tears 6.2. Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications: Guilt 3.3 and Flowers 7.5. But remember, overuse can cause Husband 1.0 to default to such background applications as Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0, or Beer 6.1. Please remember that Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will create Snoring Loudly.WAV files. DO NOT install Mother-In-Law 1.0 or reinstall another Boyfriend program. These are not supported applications and will crash Husband 1.0. It could also potentially cause Husband 1.0 to default to the program: Girlfriend 9.2, which runs in the background and has been known to introduce potentially serious viruses into the Operating System. In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have a limited memory and can't learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to enhance his system performance. I personally recommend Hot Food 3.0 and Single Malt Scotch 4.5 combined with such applications as Boob Job 3.6D and that old standby...Lingerie 6.9 (which have both been credited with improved performance of his hardware). Good Luck, Tech Support Submitted by Terry Clover 34

Brain Teaser: Describe how to put 27 animals in four pens in such a way that there are an odd number of animals in each pen. Answer in next edition BrainTeasers submitted by Bryan Greetham Last Months Brain Teaser: Why not have another go, answer below. There are ten bags, each containing ten gold coins, all of which look identical. In nine of the bags each coin is 16 ounces, but in one of the bags the coins are actually 17 ounces each. How is it possible, in a single weighing on an accurate weighing scale, to determine which bag contains the 17 ounce coins? Answer:

Number each bag one to ten. Take one coin out of the first bag, two out of the second, three out of the third and so on. You will then have 55 coins, which you weigh. This should come to 880 ounces. However, the coins weighing 17 ounces will increase the weight by one ounce for each coin. Therefore, the number of ounces above 880 will indicate the bag containing the heavy coins. For example, if the total weight of the coins is 889 ounces, then the ninth bag will be the one containing the heavy coins.

JUST FOR A SMILE Isn’t Technology Great!!! I bought my cell phone, I thought about the 30-year business I ran with 1800 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and Twitter. I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so all kids, their spouses, grand kids and great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space. That was before one of my grandkids hooked me up for Tweeter, Tweetree, Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie and Twittererific Tweetdeck, Twitpix and something that sends every message to my cell phone and every other program within the texting World. My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. I am not ready to live like this. I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag. The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then going to the shops or library. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth [it's red] phone I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at Carrefour talking to my wife and everyone in the nearest 50 yards was glaring at me. I had to take my hearing aid out to use it, and I got a little loud. I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside that gadget was the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-u-lating." You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light. Then if I made a right turn instead. Well, it was not a good relationship. When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least I think she loves me. To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven't figured out how I can lose three phones all at once and have to run around digging under chair cushions and checking bathrooms and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings. The world is just getting too complex for me. They even mess me up every time I go to the shops. You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "bolso?" every time I check out just knocks me for a loop. I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but I never remember to take them with me. Us senior citizens don't need anymore gadgets. The TV remote and the garage door remote are about all we can handle. HIDDEN COUNTRIES ANSWERS:- 1. CHINA, 2. CANADA, 3. KENYA, 4. INDIA, 5 MALI, 6 ESTONIA, 7. TOGO, 8. OMAN, 9 CUBA, 10 PANAMA, 11.
