PRESIDENT’S LETTER We're sorry that we have had to say a final goodbye to long standing member Norma Danby a lovely lady in the true sense of the word, we will miss her smiling face. The last month of the year here already but it doesn't feel at all Christmassy as the sun is shining, no heating on yet and we still have light outside until about 6. I write this just before going to the UK for a few days where I will see a completely different story! We have held our EGM re the lifts and toilets, some of us sad by the result and some of us happy but that's what a democratic Club is all about. Looking forward to Cindy's speed gaming night, please give Cindy your support by attending, sounds fun. Don't forget Christmas Concert night and bring your mince pies. Please don't forget to give Maureen Winckle Baldwin something for a present to those that are attending the Club Christmas morning. Happy Christmas to everyone and if I don't see you after Christmas a Happy New Year. Sue Potter

This is not only to wish all members and friends a very Happy Christmas and a Healthy Prosperous New Year but also to say Goodbye. After 23 years of living a happy life mostly on the coast, the first year in Jimena de la Frontera, which turned out not to suit my husband‘s poor health, I have managed to acquire the rental of a Sheltered Housing Flat in Stubbington near Fareham Hampshire quite near to where I was born in Portsmouth. Having had my name on the RAFA Housing list for over two years and being disappointed when a flat became available, I was beginning to think I would have more trouble in finding a place I could afford. On the advice of RAFA Welfare I applied to the Church of England Soldiers Sailors and Airman's Housing Association earlier this year, and after an interview early in October was given the chance of a flat at their location at Stubbington. I cannot believe my luck. It is such a lovely location on the edge of the village and surrounded by trees. It is exactly what I was hoping for as I am a country girl at heart. The walk from the flats takes one through a park directly to the doctors surgery and into the village. I had to accept from 1st November or lose it, and I wasn’t going to risk doing that. So now I am frantically down sizing and hope to be able to depart before Christmas. I shall miss all the friends I have made at I.C.E. especially the many trips all around Spain, which I would never have been able to do on my own. The fun I had as Deputy Chair of RAFA Gibraltar and the trips we managed to take around the RAF installation, I think eight in all. I am sure the Club will continue to thrive and I am not going to say that I’ll not see some of you again sometime soon, never say never again. Thank you for making me so welcome. Diane Brice. (93012) So what have we been up to? On Sunday the 28th of October Pat and I travelled to the Salón Varietés Theatre in Fuengirola and after an enjoyable meal at just 8.50€ for 3 courses at our favourite Italian ’The Gondola’ in restaurant row, we took our seats at an almost full house in the theatre. The show we went to see was Il Divo Tribute, a trio of singers from South Africa and they were fantastic. They sang one of the best versions of Freddie Mercury’s Bohemian Rhapsody I have heard. They sang a great range starting with opera, going onto pop including; Buble, Sinatra, Queen, Adele, Elvis and in the second half had the theatre rocking. A really great evening, unfortunately they were going home a few days later, hopefully to come back in the future. The weekend of 7/8th November we took a belated anniversary few days away to Seville, the trip had been postponed as we both had that chesty bug that had been going around. We had an uneventful trip on the Friday arriving at the Novotel a very pleasant and clean hotel. The room was very large, breakfast was hot or cold, and the WiFi signal in the room was very good. I would recommend the hotel although a bit far from tourist sites but not so bad. And the bar just down the road with a pleasant terrace was just 3€ for a grande beer and a large glass of wine, restaurant next door to this was also very good and reasonable. We have been to Seville about four times on day trips and did not get to see a lot, going for a few days we appreciated what a nice city it is. We did the river cruise and a horse and carriage tour. We walked the old town of narrow winding alley ways and walked a lovely park. We will certainly go back for another city break, we have visited many Spanish Cities and we think this is the best, so much to see and do. Pat and Terry Smith 10

They simply don’t make them like they used to. This is a Bentley Speed Six, a marvel of British engineering from 1930, which was restored to its glory in honor of the legendary 1930 Bentley ‘Blue Train’. Like one for Christmas??? In 1930, British motor company Rover advertised that it beat the world-famous ‘Train Bleu’, a luxury express train, designed to take British aristocrats and celebrities from Calais to the French Riviera. Originally, the Bentley Speed Six was introduced in 1928 as a more sporting version of the Bentley 6½ litre. The vehicle's interior is made of red leather, velvet carpeting, and walnut trimmings. Following an advertisement, Captain Joel Woolf Babe Barnato, a British playboy millionaire and chairman of Bentley, wagered £100 that his Bentley Speed Six could beat the train as well. (Back in 1930, the average annual income in the UK was £165). The Bentley Speed Six was first introduced in 1928 as a sporty version of the Bentley 6½ litre. They were produced until 1930, when a new model

took its place. Despite being off to a bad start, Barnato managed to beat the train by a few minutes, but when the French authorities got wind of his exploits, he was fined for illegally racing and paid a hefty fine. The story became infamous and the Speed Six became a legendary vehicle. The engine has been restored to perfect running order, using original and custom-parts. The Blue Train version produced 200 hp, reached a top speed of 200km/h (125mph), and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1929 and 1930. In both races, the driver was none other than Barnato – the Chairman of Bentley Motors. 11

PAST EVENTS Wednesday 21st October - Ladies and Gents Who Lunch Out Oh No!!!!!!!! Cocomo is closing its doors!!!!!!!!! But don’t worry, by the time you read this they will have re-opened in new and much larger premises. On this occasion the Juliets decided to go for the Sunday Lunch option, good food, good service and a bit of chat. Thanks to Joanna for the organising. The Romeos experienced a new venue, Bar Amara at Benamara, and we were so lucky as after 4 days of very wet weather we could sit outside in the sun. Simple very tasty food served hot with good service, and price of drinks being well within the gents’ pocket money. Thanks Doug for the organising. Friday 23rd October - ‘Noughties’ Celebration Dinner Nineteen attended the dinner at Taberna Miguel, a mixture of ‘Noughty’ I.C.E. club members and their guests. Service being a bit slow on a busy night just meant an extra drink, the dinner when served came altogether, lots of it and served hot. A great night (and early morning for some!). If you have not yet tried this restaurant it is to be recommended, they have recently opened a new courtyard service area, good menu, good choice and not expensive. Friday 31st October - Autumn Fayre at the Clubhouse The International Club of Estepona, ICE, held their annual Autumn Fayre which again was a great success entertaining all the visitors with a variety of pub games: Cake, Christmas decorations, Jewellery and Spice stalls. The traditional "Bacon Butties" went like "Hot Bread". The Bar was busy with thirsty customers and it all had a fantastic atmosphere. Submitted by Wilma Keeley Winners: Photography all classes - Dave Hackett Quoits - Terry Smith Shove h’penny - Richard Wood Skittles - Brian Woodward Darts - Keith Rumsey Darts Lucky Number - Peter Galloway Thanks to Sue and all helpers, and Lesley and Albert for manning the busy bar. Monday 9th November - An Evening With ‘The Lola Boys’ The entertainment from the boys was fabulous, so polished and slick, and the atmosphere within the club was great. And didn’t welsh Pierre on the front row enjoy himself! Over eighty members and guests filled the bottom floor of the club. The supper provided by Sue and Di was a very tasty and unexpected treat, well done. Thanks go to Sue for the organising and all those that helped with the preparation of the room. Thanks to Mac and Tracy who at times were quite overwhelmed behind the bar. 12

PAST EVENTS Thursday 3rd November I.C.E. 27th Birthday Party What a really fantastic night, greetings on arrival, the room which was nicely decorated for the occasion was so welcoming. The meal was delightful, staff pleasant and always busy, and Mandy L did a great job getting members up and dancing. The raffle prize vouchers for meals at local restaurants is a great idea, and thanks go to Terry Wayne of Blevins Franks for their company donation. Thanks to our President Sue Potter for organising such a great event.

Saturday 14th November - Moroccan Themed Supper Evening A welcome sight on arrival, tables nicely decorated and inviting. Great evening with an enjoyable Moroccan supper: a tasty salad selection for starters, main course being a spicy lamb tagine with vegetables accompanied with cuscus and flat bread, ending with a selection of Moroccan deserts. A truly admirable evening to chat to friends and enjoy a different cuisine. Well done to Ken and Sally who both spent many hours on the preparation and cooking, and helpers Julie, Richard and Isabella. Not forgetting Sue and Rob (the Moroccan green goddess!) behind the bar. Wednesday 18th November - Ladies and Gents Who Lunch Out It was the middle of November and would you believe it was a lovely warm sunny day. Twenty one Juliets paid a return visit to the Mumbai Masala Indian Restaurant in The Estepona Port and enjoyed a meal of selection of starters each followed by their own choice of a main course depending how hot they like their spices. Thanks to Maggie for the organising. For the ten Romeos expecting fish ‘n’ chips it was off due to The Irish Fiddler being closed. So an alternative venue was found at the last minute, The El Pato Chinese restaurant next door to the above that Romeos considered the Juliets to be quite noisy except when eating was taking place. El Pato has a good selection three course menu del dia for just 7.55€. Well done and thanks to Bob for the organising and to Mick for ensuring we arrived at the revised venue. 13

Exchange Of Information And The End Of Financial Privacy By Terry Wayne, Partner, Blevins Franks - 952 799 752 - terry.wayne@blevinsfranks.com There has been talk about this for years. It is important to realise however that this is not just talk any more – the new automatic exchange of tax information regime starts in January 2016. It affects most corners of the globe – there is no hiding place. It will follow a Common Reporting Standard (CRS), developed by the OECD, which provides for annual automatic exchange between tax authorities of financial account information. It sets out the financial account information to be exchanged, the institutions that need to report, the different types of accounts and taxpayers covered, as well as common due diligence procedures to be followed by financial institutions. The information to be exchanged includes account balances, interest, dividends, sales proceeds from financial assets This covers accounts held by individuals, as well as by entities like trusts and foundations. The financial institutions that need to report include banks, custodians, guardians, certain collective investment vehicles and certain insurance companies. This is quite different, and much further reaching, to the information exchange on request which was introduced through many bilateral agreements following the 2008 crisis. Under these agreements, tax authorities ask for information on people’s financial assets when they suspect them of tax evasion. Now they will receive information on everyone, every year, regardless of how compliant or not the taxpayer is. By comparing the data received with tax returns, the authorities will be able to detect where income or the underlying assets have not been declared. Almost a hundred countries have committed to the new regimes so far. The ‘early adopters’, including Spain, the rest of the EU and UK offshore centres, start collecting financial information from January 2016 for transmissions in 2017. Other countries including Switzerland start a year later. In Europe the CRS will be implemented through the Administrative Cooperation Directive. It provides for automatic information sharing on interest, dividends, other investment income, account balances, sales proceeds from financial assets, income from employment, directors’ fees, life insurance, pensions and property. Over recent years, the Spanish government has stepped up its efforts to detect tax evasion and collect unpaid taxes. This new global exchange of information will be an invaluable tool for the tax authorities. It will help them not only compare data with tax returns, but also with Form 720 where residents have to declare their overseas assets. The penalties for undeclared assets can be very costly, so it is important that you declare everything correctly. This loss of financial privacy is a significant change and affects everyone who lives in one country and has assets in another. We still have the right, however, to structure assets in a tax efficient manner. It is important to only use arrangements which are compliant in Spain, but it is also important to protect your wealth, for yourself and your heirs, where possible. It is possible to take advantage of legitimate opportunities to protect your assets from various Spanish taxes. You need specialist advice. To keep in touch with the latest developments in the offshore world, check out the latest news on our website www.blevinsfranks.com 27

'ICE GOLF SOCIETY'. 'The Autumn Cup' Mariska and I would like to inform you all, that we have both recovered after the incident and are doing well.!!. (See page 25 November magazine). Thanks Terry. 'Golf Break' to El Rompido. Many many thanks to Peter Henry for organising this fabulous four night break to El Rompido Golf Resort. Situated on the Portuguese border, near Cartaya on the Rio Piedras natural parkland estuary, this 5 star resort has two 18 hole courses, two complete practice areas and excellent facilities. Although a few more buggies and electric trolleys would not go amiss. Peter had arranged three rounds, using both courses, and had the rain storm not curtailed the Sunday competition, everything would have gone to plan beautifully . The Results: Round One: First Place: Aileen Hyde 29pts, Second Place: Alan Green 29pts, Third Place: Peter Henry 28pts. Round Two: First Place: Alan Davis 32pts. Second Place: Stephen Hyde 28pts. Third Place: Aileen Hyde 26pts. Combined: First Place: Aileen Hyde 55points, Second Place: Stephen Hyde 54points, Third Place: Alan Davis 53points. All very close and all very enjoyable. The top three have had their handicaps cut by one. For further information please

contact Zorro. After the exertions of the games we had to, not unusual for golfers, take full advantage the bars, restaurants, disco and Karaoke. But as the ethics of the sport dictate ' What happens on the '19 Hole' stays on the '19th Hole'. Needless to say we were all very well behaved!!! One incident however cannot pass without mention: Ask Les Jinks, AKA Zorro, What stopped the car door from closing? I think we all look forward to another 'Break Away'. 'December Away Day' If we are able to arrange an 'Away Day' during December you will be informed via the e-mail list Spring Cup 19.04.2016 at Estepona Golf. Autumn Cup 04.10.2016 at Valle Romano Golf Resort. 'Casares Golf Club Roll-Up' We play a twice weekly 'Roll-Up' stableford competition on Tuesdays and Fridays at Casares Golf Club where our members benefit from discounted green fees. Tee off times vary a little throughout the year and please note that, as from the beginning of November, the tee off time will 09.00 am. If you want to play please arrive around 08.30am. We often have 12 or more players and it's all very friendly, light hearted, (in other words 'cut throat')!! and open to all levels. A sense of humour is well worth putting in the bag!. SOUTH AFRICAN HOLIDAY – Part One Our holiday got off to a mixed start – more stressful for some than others! We had the furthest to travel, but had a very pleasant journey down to Heathrow, arriving ahead of schedule and being amongst the first to check in our bags. We told the Saga rep that the rest of our party (Rob & Sue Potter and Les & Audrey Jinks) would be arriving separately (or so we thought) and we would wait for them by the checkin desks. After a while we got a phone call from Sue saying they were, in fact, picking up Les & Audrey, (adding about 1¼ hours to their journey), so it would be a while before they arrived. Another call told us their driver had got lost on the way to Heathrow, and they would be another 20 mins. or so! The Saga rep was getting anxious as everyone else had checked in and she was supposed to be at another terminal. We were getting thirsty, so told her we would nip upstairs for a quick drink, and be back in time for their arrival. As we came back downstairs they were just checking in their bags, having had a stressful journey wondering if they would arrive in time! We only just had time for a quick meal, and in true I.C.E. fashion, Sue, Audrey & I began moving tables to create a table for 6, while the men were telling the waiter we were in a hurry. He said he would find us a table, then looked up and said, “oh, it seems the ladies have already done it”. Thankfully the rest of the journey was uneventful, and about 11 hours after taking off we landed at Johannesburg then boarded a coach for the 4 hour journey (including breakfast stop) to Lakeside Lodge in the Entabeni Game Reserve. Immediately on arrival we were told lunch was waiting for us (too soon after breakfast?!) so we ate again, before adjourning to our respective rooms to unpack, rest, and/or find our bearings. Dinner that night was a BBQ, (locally known as a “Boma dinner”) under a clear sky, watching a full moon rise over Hanglip Mountain (subsequently nicknamed “Muffin Mountain” because of its shape.) An extremely enjoyable end to a very long day (or was it two?) The following day started with a rare long lie in and we had time to explore the grounds before lunch. The Game Reserve is made up of two distinct levels and our first game drive, that afternoon, was only on the upper level, where our Lodge was located. On the second morning, after our 5.30am wake-up call, we ventured out to check the temperature, and noticed a large deposit on the grass under our veranda. Rob and Sue were already out and said “Did you see them?” “See what?” said I. “The elephants”, was the reply. Apparently when Sue got up in the middle of the night she heard a noise outside and there were five elephants milling around between our rooms–obviously the source of the large deposit! Needless to say we'd heard nothing. We then embarked on our second game drive, which was on the lower level, as indeed were most of the subsequent ones. This involved, for the first time at least, a hair-raising journey down an extremely rough track which at times seemed almost vertical. We got used to this by the end of the week, but were slightly worried one day as we were just about to return up the hill when the sky turned jet black and a few drops of rain fell on the tarpaulin roof of the truck. Goodness knows how we'd have got up in torrential rain, but happily the clouds passed us by, and those few drops of rain were all we had on the whole holiday. >>31 30

<<30 The week very quickly settled into a hectic routine of game drives, excursions, eating, drinking and early nights, with hardly any time for leisurely showers as we were frequently returned to the Lodge after we were supposed to be dining! We were treated to two picnics in the Bush. Not your ordinary picnic but long tables covered with tablecloths and set with proper cutlery and napkins. A very attractive buffet was provided and the beer and wine flowed. A bit like the Ramblers' end of season BBQ! We visited the Legend Golf & Safari Resort, which boasts the most unusual 19th hole in the world. No, it's not a bar, but a par 3 hole which involves a helicopter ride to the top of Hanglip mountain, and then a 400 metre shot to the green, 400 metres below the tee. The Wildlife & Cultural Centre included a replica of a Pedi Village, where we were invited to sample the Zulu tribal beer. If I tell you that Ken would not wish to repeat the experience and said it tasted worse than Cruzcampo, then those of you who know him will realise just how bad it was. The Wildlife part of the Centre included breeding programs for white lions (their enclosure being a 5 hectare island surrounded only by a moat, no fences) and Wild Dogs (although at present they only have 2 males!) On our penultimate morning we discovered that, once again, the elephants had been during the night and this time demolished a tree outside our room, and no, we didn't hear that either! Our last game drive was an afternoon one, and we were all enjoying cocktails in the Bush when one of the Rangers came up to us and asked us to finish/leave our drinks and get quickly back on the trucks, without running, as there was a male lion approaching! We had just got seated when, sure enough, he came meandering past, but seemed more interested in having a drink from the nearby waterhole than eating us. The day concluded with another very enjoyable BBQ, during which an enormous Atlas Moth settled on Audrey's arm and very obligingly sat long enough for several photos. We thus reached the end of the first week, and although we failed to see a leopard or a cheetah we did take hundreds of photos of other wild life. The following day meant another early start before the 4 hour drive back to Johannesburg airport and our flight to Durban, ready for week two. To be continued............Ken & Liz Harris

Matters December 2015 / January 2016 Windows 10 – During November Microsoft should have issued a major upgrade for Windows 10. It is expected that this may include “extensions” for the Edge browser. This may mean that it is now a suitable time for the “delayers” to upgrade. Further details in the February magazine. Warning for iPad, iPhone and other Apple users. It has been announced that a new malware, called XcodeGhost, has been discovered. This malware has infected at least 39 known iOS apps all of which made it into the App Store. The malware uses a method of attack that is new to the Mac world: infecting a compiler. In this case, the compiler in question is Xcode, Apple’s own development environment, used for creating iOS apps, Mac OS X apps, Safari extensions and more. It seems that, in China, downloading Xcode from Apple’s servers takes a very long time. So it’s a common thing for Chinese developers to get Xcode from third-party sources, distributed from servers within China. Apparently, someone uploaded a tampered copy of Xcode to a Chinese file-sharing site called Baidu. Although Baidu has now removed the hacked Xcode files from their servers, the damage has been done. The app was downloaded by Chinese developers and used to develop an unknown number of apps. The malicious changes to Xcode, however, caused each of these apps to be infected with the same malicious code. What are the dangers? The malware removes information off the device like the device name, country and unique identifiers. It may also have the ability to push dialogue boxes to your iPad’s or iPhone’s screen. The malware may also be able to open websites on your browser which could be used for a variety of malicious purposes including phishing and installing other potentially malicious software. How do I protect myself against XcodeGhost? iOS users should immediately uninstall any infected iOS app on their devices (see below for a link to website giving a list of the affected apps) or update to a newer version that has removed the malware. Resetting your iCloud password, and any other passwords inputted on your iOS device, is also strongly recommended as a precautionary measure. A full list of affected apps can be seen at the following website:https://blog.lookout.com/ blog/2015/09/21/xcodeghost-apps/
