Editor: What a morning it was at the club on Thursday 28th May due to no water at the club, a large area of Bahia Dorada had water switched off due to a major leak, this put the Thursday lunch in jeopardy. However forward came stalwart club volunteers Doug, Ted and Mac who made numerous trips to the swimming pool area to collect heavy pots of water. Then due to the extra hard work by the catering staff of the day Diane, Dave and Isabella the meal then came out on time. Thanks must go to these dedicated hard working club volunteers. Unfortunately the following Thursday lunch had to be cancelled due to shortage of volunteers. Have a great summer, next magazine edition will be available in September. Sad News. We’re very sorry to tell you that Derek Fee, a long time club member, died suddenly of a heart attack at home during the end of May.

Gordon Beatson, also a long standing club member, has died in hospital. Our condolences go to Diane, all family and friends.

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Since my last letter to you all we have had to say final farewells to 2 more members, Derek Fee and Gordon Beatson, both will be missed especially on Thursdays. Some of you will know that I have had a nasty mole removed, luckily I had it removed before it spread, so don't put off having any moles checked. On a happier note while I am writing this in UK some of our members are having a good time in Italy, what wonderful views, thanks to Aileena for organising. By the time you read this surely the weather will have improved and become more settled and some of you would have escaped the heat by returning to UK, wherever you are, enjoy your summer. There are a couple of events and trips being held through the summer so if you are in Spain please remember to support them. Sue Potter Tessa, a sincere thank you: I wish to send my sincere thanks to all the club members and friends who have helped me to endure a desperately sad situation. You are a wonderful group of people, genuinely concerned for others. Special thanks to Vic for the beautifully produced memorial folders produced at very short notice. To Barbara and all the other ladies who produced such a wonderful spread of food, it looked an enormous amount. I was delighted to see that almost everything was appreciated and eaten. Thank you all for your kind donations which totalled 755 Euros, that I took to Cudeca, they were of course delighted to receive such a generous donation. Please continue with your support as I really do appreciate it. Peter Henry Monday June 1st was yet another sad occasion, the funeral of Derek Fee, a long standing Club member and dear friend of mine and someone I shall miss. Recently the Club has lost two other Club members, Frank Hardwick and Tessa Henry, both played an active part in club activities and both during their membership worked actively in different ways to improve the facilities of the Club, all three will be sadly missed. So three funerals in two months, which has never happened before in Club history and which I hope will not occur again. With these three funerals in mind I do want to offer my thanks to all the ladies of the Club who helped to provide the sandwiches, baking and assisting in providing this service which the Club offers to the mourning family to any member who dies. It is amazing to watch how these ladies gel together and work as such a cohesive team. Having expressed my grateful thanks, I hope this 'trend' is over for some time to come. Regards Barbara Salisbury 5

PAST EVENTS Holiday Trip to Galicia - Day 6 Friday 8th May - Santiago de Compostela and Return Home Our last day was trip to Santiago de Compostela, here every year thousands of pilgrims make the long pilgrimage, walking or cycling from as far as the French Way over the Pyrenees. We took the easy way and were dropped off by coach, so we didn't get a certificate. The object of the pilgrimage is to venerate the remains of Saint James. According to history (folk law), in the first century James travelled to Galicia to preach the gospel, he then returned back to Palestine, where he was martyred. The disciples Theodor and Athanasius, decided to move the body by the currents of the sea where the boat came to rest in the estuary of Arousa in Galicia province of Pontevedra. Centuries later during 813 a hermit called Paio saw strange lights in the form of stars bearing down over Mount Libredon, where the Archbishop and a group of followers discovered in an old Roman Fort the remains of three men, one being headless. A Latin inscription reading ‘This is the body of Saint James and his disciples’. A church was built round the remains, and over the years has developed into the beautiful cathedral we see today. Many of us attended the full sung mass and where we were treated to the crowning glory watching the huge botafumeiro swung from side to side down the transept, guided by eight men called Tiraboleiros. Behind the altar many pilgrims gather to hug the stature of Saint James, and visit the relics. Following the mass refreshment was needed, so we walked down the covered arcades close by deciding which little restaurant we would visit where red wine and food could be enjoyed. Walking around the four beautiful squares that surround the Basilica, wonderful views of the old facades can be seen. Although the exterior has been changed over the years, the interior remains Romanesque, except the high altar which is very ornate baroque in style. A lot of tired and weary pilgrims descended the ‘Wolly Wagon’ (tourist train), this took us round the old town with guided talk. Then a number of us descended on the Parador Hotel in the main square and for a drink and a rest in the most comfortable lounge. This wonderful building was built by Ferdinand and lsabella, to house the pilgrims, who until then had slept in the Cathedral. Lastly returning to the bus following a very long day, but full of good memories and lots of photograph. It was time to say goodbye to Galicia as we headed for the airport. PAST EVENTS Wednesday 20th May - Trip to Ronda by Train Firstly time wise the whole trip was perfect. Everyone played their part in keeping to the appointed time arrangements. The weather on the coast was a bit grey but as we moved inland the weather improved and for me the weather was great for a day trip where usually there is a bit of exploring and discovery. I haven't been to Ronda for a couple of years, but I love the place. I love the train journey and also look forward to seeing the storks, the terrain and the plant life. It was particularly good for me personally because I had a visitor staying with me from Wales and she was so enthusiastic about the whole trip and totally enthralled by the whole experience that her joy was transferred to me. She is quite the expert on plant material and she was thrilled to see the Pisano pine which grows just outside the church situated in the old town. We did follow Joan to the old part of Ronda, visiting the house which was a refuge for the monks which I always like to visit to see the old Spanish furniture, lovely garden with spectacular views. The old church displaying two kinds of architecture was also well worth a visit and 'to put icing on the cake' we were given a discount on the visited locations. For me personally, what always gives me extra pleasure is 'little retail therapy' and the purchases I made were great. The coach trip down to the coast was dramatic however we arrived home ahead of time. To conclude I do want to thank my fellow travellers for making Elizabeth, my visitor so welcome. Regards Barbara Salisbury 10

Wednesday 27th May - Ladies and Gents who Lunch Out Margaret added yet another successful ladies lunch in May when she chose "Nellie G’s" to add to her list of local restaurants. Twenty five ladies met to wine, dine and gossip for a couple of hours. The food was enjoyed by all of us with some choosing two courses while others managed three. The only down was when one of the ladies chose to smoke at the table even though the outside was just a few steps away. Thank you Margaret for all the time and effort you take in organising this and the other lunches. Submitted by Christina Woodward On this occasion it was decided that the Romeos should go ‘posh’ for once (and why not!). So eighteen of us went to a new venue El Paraiso Golf Club and where a table had been reserved by Doug under the toldo overlooking a very well presented golf course. For just 11.95€ for the menu del dia we had a 2 course menu with coffee (and of course a few optional bevies were enjoyed!). A very hot sunny day, maybe a little to hot under the toldo that had to be adjusted a few times to avoid the sun. Very good service from the waitresses was appreciated. Thanks Doug for the organising. Tuesday 9th June - Garden Club Meet For the third Gardening Club get together, members met at the entrance to the Orchid Domes in Estepona........and what a treat was in store for us. It was a truly spectacular sight - hundreds of the most beautiful orchids. One could also get so many good ideas from the way they were displayed – inside rocks, cork containers and other ‘nooks and crannies’. One of the members had been before and was quite amazed at how different it looked from his last visit. There is still no charge for entrance because everything is still growing/maturing into an even more spectacular vision for the future. The waterfall was a wonderful surprise and such fun to walk under. As well as the orchids there were many beautiful plants – some we had never seen before. After a very enjoyable walk around, we left the domes and went for a coffee and chat at a nearby cafe. Tip of the month: When taking cuttings of roses, choose a stem about the thickness of a pencil. Before planting it in the ground or a pot, push the bottom end into a small potato and bury the whole lot. This will keep the cutting moist while roots develop. Estate Planning For UK Nationals In Spain

By Terry Wayne, Partner, Blevins Franks 952 799 752 terry.wayne@blevinsfranks.com It is important for UK nationals who have moved to Spain to review their estate planning. You need to consider the local succession law and succession tax, and how they will affect your family and heirs. UK inheritance tax also remains a factor. Besides the tax aspect, there are some questions that you need to consider. Who are your heirs and how do you want to distribute your estate among them? Do you want them to control over the money? How soon will they need access to the funds? How much will probate slow things down, can you avoid it for some of your assets? Succession law in Spain is quite different from the UK. It dictates that a certain percentage of an estate must go to certain people. This applies to UK nationals living here, unless they have a will. A new EU legislation from August 2015 will also allow you to opt out of Spanish succession law – but not Spanish succession tax. Spanish succession tax is also very different from the UK’s inheritance tax. Tax is paid by each recipient, rather than by the estate, and there is no blanket exemption between spouses. The rate of succession tax also increases depending on the relationship between you and the beneficiary, i.e., whether they are your spouse, children, nephew/niece, friend etc. The tax is due on death when the asset being inherited is located in Spain, or if the recipient is resident in Spain. So if you leave your Spanish property to children who live in the UK, they will pay succession tax on it. If you leave your UK pension fund to your spouse who lives in Spain, they will pay tax on it. Tax is applied at progressive rates from 0% to 34%. Then multipliers, depending on the beneficiary’s relationship to you and their net worth, can take tax much higher – possibly up to 82%. Under state rules, descendants, ascendants and spouses receive an allowance of €15,956. Relatives like siblings, cousins, nephew and nieces and step-children receive €7,993. Anyone else does not receive an allowance. There is a 95% allowance against the inherited value of the main home of the deceased, but only if a spouse or descendant keeps the property for 10 years. Even then there is a maximum deduction of €122,606 per inheritor. Local autonomous communities can adjust the state rules. Andalucía provides a 100% exemption on inheritances to spouses and children of up to €175,000, provided the wealth of the recipient is less than €402,678. UK nationals also remain liable to UK inheritance tax, unless they establish a non-UK domicile. Don’t risk leaving your estate planning too late. At Blevins Franks we aim to make the inheritance process as easy and tax efficient for your heirs as possible. Please contact me for a “succession planning health check”. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. June Trip To Lake Como, Italy The travel diary of Diane, Dave, Peter, Pat, Terry and on most days Barbara. It was a free and easy trip organised by Aileena so others in the party would have done other ‘adventures’. Day 1, 10th June, Outward Journey: A very early start from home, first pickup being 6.30am (yes there are two 6.30’s in a day!) What a surprise, we had a full size coach for just 19 trippers so we could spread out for the journey to Malaga airport arriving in plenty of time for our flight to Milan Malpensa Airport. We picked up 3 other trippers on the way so we now had a full complement on our transfer to Colico our hotel destination. The transfer took us across country and up the side of lake Como but with 16 tunnels, some of them being very long, our views were a bit obstructed. We arrived at our destination for the week, Hotel Risi, right on the lake side adjacent to the lake ferry terminal. We checked into our room, opened the window shutters and there was a perfect view right across the lake to the hills beyond. A drink, a wander around and a rest, then dinner had been arranged for us all on the patio. Day 2, 11th June, Slow Ferry Trip: We awoke to a glorious sunny day so the consensus was to take the slow ferry down the lake to enjoy the weather and take in the fantastic views. The ferry stops at number of small towns and passes others, all looking picturesque in the early morning sun. In the shadow of the snow-covered Rhaetian Alps, Lake Como (also known as Lago di Como) is the most spectacular of lakes. Shaped like an upside-down letter Y, measuring 120km all up, its squiggly shoreline is scattered with villages, including exquisite Bellagio in the centre of the inverted V on the lake’s southern shore. There was a split decision on where to spend the day, some of the party decided on Bellagio, our group decided on Como a pleasant 4 hour lake trip. Como has a charming historic centre within its remaining 12th-century city walls. A prosperous city with the grandeur of the cathedral, villas and the loveliness of its lakeshore. The town is a lovely spot for an aimless wander, punctuated with drink stops and restaurants. Como built its wealth on the silk industry and it remains Europe's most important producer of silk products. The journey back was an adventure, we had picked the time for our ferry back to the hotel only to find on arriving at the port this was Sundays only service! Next ferry was not for another 3 hours which would have got us back very late for dinner. So off Dave and Peter went to find an alternative at the railway station, no direct train but there was a bus. This was another experience, we are sure the bus drivers learnt their skills at the F1 school of driving, a bit nerve racking for passengers on the narrow and winding roads. We had a change of driver part way through journey and he was just as bad! The good point was the 2 hour journey was just 6€ each. Day 3, 12th June, Panoramic Train Journey To St Moritz: As the good weather was due to break the next day Aileena took the decision that this would be the best day for this trip and she was not wrong as we again had glorious sunshine. The whole group agreed and joined the transfer to Triano to join the Bernina Express to St Moritz, Aileena had arranged for us to have a panoramic carriage that turned out to be well worth the extra money. We had great views passing through the countryside and mountains, some still having snow on top. Connecting Switzerland and Italy the highest mountain railway in the Alps, the Bernina Express train rises to the challenges presented by snow, ice and the steepest gradients, a fourhour journey of breath-taking beauty through this iconic mountain range. The train weaves its way up to the highest point 2,253m above sea level over looking Lake Blanco at Ospizio Bermino before arriving at St Moritz, many photo’s being taken en route. The downside Aileena had arranged a picnic beside the lake at St Moritz, however it was blowing a gale and not very warm so a sheltered bar was soon found before the journey back. This was not uneventful as the train conductor sent us to a different carriage as our original had a problem. We were soon overrun with German party, as it was their carriage, and had to move to yet another. An unforgettable day. 28 >>29

Day 4, 13th June, Try And Beat The Weather: A very wet morning so what to do? We decided to join Aileena for a trip to the local out of town shopping centre to spend the morning. Then back to the hotel for a free and easy afternoon. In the evening 4 of our group visited a wine festival at a nearby country village, a lot up hill and then down numerous steps to deep old dusty cellars that had been decorated and fitted with bars serving wines and nibbles. Everyone was so friendly, an enjoyable evening. Day 5, 14th June, Menaggio: A more pleasant start today weather wise so our group decided to take the fast ferry to Menaggio about half way up the western side of Lake Como, an attractive town. The heart of the "old" town is gathered around Piazza Garibaldi close to Menaggio's harbour and features mostly 19th century buildings in the Italian alpine style painted in muted tones. The higher part of the town is more medieval featuring narrow alleys, steep stairs and stone buildings. The tree shaded lakeshore promenades are bordered by flowers, and the well-kept villas form a wonderful and serene place. As we were walking around we could see the very dark clouds and lightning across the lake, and the rain moving across. So a quick lunch under shelter was soon planned and luckily we just made it before a deluge of rain and this continued until the return ferry was due so we got quite wet but can say the only time during our holiday. Day 6, 15th June, Bellagio: Again a dry start to the day so this time Bellagio was planned for a visit, a town situated on the opposite side of the lake to Menaggio. Fewer resorts are as beautiful as Bellagio on the Lake Como, called the “Pearl of the Lake”, providing the perfect place to soak up the lake's famous panorama. The village is characterised by century-old buildings, stone lanes and picturesque cobbled stairways filled with shops showcasing the finest Italian wares. We had a pleasant walk around the town, although there are steep slopes, before stopping for lunch right on the waterside watching the many ferries arriving and leaving, quite a busy terminal. Once again we were watching black clouds and lighting in the distance this time from Como direction but fortunately this time the rain did not reach us. Day 7, 16th June, Morbegno: Today Aileena invited the group to join her to visit her home town of Morbegno, Not a good start as on the way to the train station we heard trains were on a one day strike, no problem though as the local bus service again came to the rescue! Morbegno іs а little town іn the low Valtellina Valley, оn the left side оf the Adda river. Іt іs part оf the province оf Sondrio оf Lombardy. Aileena led us on a walk through the town to Coloniali delicatessen a step back more than 100 years in Italian history. This 'market' contains relics of the past in a building that has been immaculately preserved. The cheese cantina contains the finest cheeses of Valtellina, and olive oil from the shores of Lake Como. Wines of the region are housed in the 5 descending cellars. The lowest of which were originally used for ice storage. The rear of the shop is a museum of very old shop equipment, utensils and much more. One member commenting ‘needed a damn good clean having rusty bits and cobwebs to say the least’, but all added to the experience. Next we headed to a very old restaurant, Osteria del Zep, very rustic and quaint in a historic way, we were invited to visit the cantina which extends some 50 feet underground. Parts of the cellar date back to the 7th century. In the old kitchen is a hand operated dumb waiter hollowed out of a tree trunk and extends through the floor down to a much lower cellar. Makes you wonder what is behind other old building in the old town. So back to the hotel avoiding a quick rain shower. Day 8, 17th June, And So Return Home: Quite an uneventful journey, plane again on time, arriving home about 5.30pm. Finale: A very enjoyable trip and well organised and informative, thankyou Aileena for working so hard on our behalf. The family run Hotel Risi (managed by the ladies of family) was very friendly, helpful and pleasant, its position could not be faulted. So what the WiFi was not perfect! Aileena, we can see why your heart is still with the area and we thank you again for being so informative as we travelled around. 29

THIS MONTHS RECIPE LIGHT SUMMER LUNCHES FOR ONE Nobody feels like cooking in the hot weather so very little cooking is involved with these lunches. TOSTADA CON TOMATE This is the most popular breakfast for Spaniards these days but Frank and I often ordered it for our lunch and it is very easy to assemble at home; Ingredients:1 small baguette per person 1 Tablespoon of Virgin Olive Oil Half a plastic tub of liquidized tomato (can be bought in most supermarkets). Salt and pepper. Method:Cut open the baguette and toast on both sides of each piece. Sprinkle over the oil. Generously spoon over the tomato and add salt and pepper. Optional additions:Top with boquerones in vinegar or sprinkle over crispy onion bits (can be bought in most supermarkets). Or top with grated cheddar cheese and pop under the grill till it bubbles. Sprinkle with Worcester sauce. Delicious! SUMMER STEW A new slant on the starter offered as Salmorejo (a thicker version of Gazpacho, the delicious Spanish cold soup) Ingredients:1 carton of Salmorejo 1 Hard boiled egg (these can be bought ready cooked in Supermarkets and are much easier to peel) 1 heaped tablespoon of Taquillos (Chopped jamon Serrano - can be bought ready chopped) Method:Chop hard boiled egg. Open carton of chilled Salmorejo, Pour into soup plate or bowl. Add chopped egg and ham. Mix well and eat with crusty bread. ………………………………………………........and (of course) a glass of wine! Enjoy your summer! The Feast of the Assumption is a very important day in the Catholic religion. It is the principal feast of the Blessed Virgin, the mother of Jesus Christ. History of the Holiday This feast commemorates two events - the departure of Mary from this life and the assumption of her body into heaven. The Church's official doctrine of the Assumption says that at the end of her life on earth Mary was assumed, body and soul, into heaven. Some mistakenly believe Mary "ascended" into heaven, which is incorrect. It was Jesus Christ who ascended into heaven, by his own power. But Mary was assumed or taken up into heaven by God. Pope Pius Xll, in 1950, defined that Mary "after the completion of her earthly life...was assumed body and soul into the glory of Heaven." Her body wasn't allowed to corrupt nor was it allowed to remain in a tomb. Though there are claims by some cities about possessing her temporary tomb. In the early Christian centuries relics of saints and those who gave their lives for the faith were jealously guarded and highly prized. Many cities claim the mortal remains of saints, both famous and littleknown. But there are no records of Mary's bodily remains being venerated anywhere. 32

One day a 12-year old boy was walking down the street when a car pulled up beside him and the window was wound down. "I'll give you a bag of lollies if you get in the car", said the male driver. "No way, get stuffed", replied the boy. How about a bag of lollies and £10?" asked the driver? "No way", replied the irritated youngster. "What about a bag of lollies and FIFTY quid, eh"? quizzed the driver, still rolling slowly to keep up with the walking boy. "No, I'm not getting in the car!" answered the boy. "OK, I know what you want - I'll give you £100 and a bag of lollies", the driver offered. "NO," screamed the boy. "What will it take to get you into the car"? Asked the driver with a long sigh. The boy replied: "Listen Dad, you bought the Skoda - you live with it !!!!!!!!!!!! Submitted by Joanna Mitchell Murphy says to Paddy, "What ya talkin into an envelope for? When two monkeys began to pull at her clothes and hair atop of the Rock, she began to panic while other tourists close to her laughed. “I felt totally helpless as these two monkeys grabbed and pawed me in my most intimate areas,” she revealed. “Then, with a yank, one of them pulled my bikini top straight off.” “I was being sexually assaulted and these people all thought it was a great joke.” Not me Luckily, her screams quickly grabbed the attention of a warden, who ran in and Guv? freed her. However, she was so angry she insisted in filing a police report, which also failed to go to plan. When she revealed to the policemen on duty she had been attacked by the monkeys, they were unable to take her claim seriously. While the policeman told her he was ‘sorry’ for her ordeal, he added that monkeys are ‘wild animals’ and cannot legally commit a crime. “And if they could, do you think you could pick out your attacker in a line-up?” added the officer, evidently struggling not to laugh. JUST FOR A SMILE Two women were sitting next to each other in a bar. After a while, one looks at the other and says, 'I can't help but think, from listening to you, that you're from Ireland.' The other woman responds proudly, 'Yes, to be sure I am!' The first one says, 'So am I! And whereabouts in Ireland are ya from?' The other woman answers, 'I'm from Dublin, I am.' The first one responds, 'So, am I!! And what street did you live on in Dublin?' The other woman says, 'A lovely little area. It was in the west end. I lived on Warbury Street in the old central part of town.' The first one says, 'Faith, and it's a small world. So did I! So did I! And what school did ya go to?' The other woman answers, 'Well now, I went to Holy Heart of Mary, of course..' The first one gets really excited and says, 'And so did I! Tell me, what year did you graduate?' The other woman answers, 'Well, now, let's see. I graduated in 1964.' The first woman exclaims, 'The Good Lord must be smiling down upon us! I can hardly believe our good luck at winding up in the same pub tonight! Can you believe it? I graduated from Holy Heart of Mary in 1964 meself!' About this time, Michael walks into the bar, sits down, and orders a beer. Brian, the bartender, walks over to Michael shaking his head and mutters, 'It's going to be a long night tonight.' Michael asks, 'Why do you say that, Brian?' Brian answers, 'The Murphy twins are hammered again'.
