A NEW LIFE

FOR ICONIC VICTORIA COLLEGE CHAPEL Brian Johnston Vic 8T1 makes generous philanthropic pledge to revitalize the chapel in the Old Vic building

Johnston’s professional credentials certainly give credence to his assessment, and his role as a member of Victoria University’s Board of Regents, and chair of the Property Committee, means that he knows every nook and cranny on campus—as well as opportunities to evolve the University’s spaces, which include many of its century-old buildings. “We can absolutely maintain architectural excellence while at the same time think about what kinds of spaces students need to excel. There is a direct relationship between student success and the spaces that inspire them. All the great universities in the world have inspiring properties. It’s no accident that Vic U’s campus often gets used in television and film to sub in for prestigious universities in the U.S. and U.K. such as Harvard and Oxford.” Johnston’s passion for Victoria University’s campus led him and his wife Colleen to pledge a generous gift of $500,000 in order to refurbish the chapel in the Old Vic building in the centre of campus. This was above and beyond the scholarship they established a few years ago to honour his late mother, Lecily (White) Johnston Hutcheson Vic 4T9. “Funnily enough, I never went into the chapel during my years studying and living on the Vic U campus,” says Johnston. “It was mostly used for religious purposes in those days. But when Colleen and I decided that we wanted to make a gift to my alma mater, we received a tour of the chapel and I thought it was so cool.” Johnston also volunteers his time on the campaign cabinet for Defy Gravity: The Campaign for Victoria University, which is raising funds to support capital improvements such as the work on the chapel, among other priorities. The Victoria College Chapel is a well-loved space with a rich history. It was the venue for the opening ceremonies of the Victoria College building in 1892 and has been home to classes, 2 VIC VISIONARIES AUTUMN 2023

s someone who made a career in real estate development, Brian Johnston Vic 8T1 looks for opportunities to help create something extraordinary, whether it be greenfield development or working on existing buildings. “Real estate projects sometimes just start with the smallest feature that can inspire you. A ravine, waterfront or a long vista are all the beginnings of something that can become world class,” he says. “Victoria University is different. The campus is iconic, indeed, world class. The starting point is magnificent. We can aspire to create something even more amazing.”

concerts, weddings and religious services ever since. Thanks to the gift from the Johnstons, the space will be refurbished to create a multi-purpose teaching space while retaining its unique architectural features. There are also plans to highlight its five stained-glass windows, which feature the Victoria University crest, John Milton, John Wesley, Martin Luther and Isaac Newton. “I’m really excited to see what the architects will come up with for this jewel of a room to serve and inspire students,” says Johnston.

“There is a direct relationship between student success and the spaces that inspire them.” Making a gift to support Victoria University’s plans for its campus was the obvious choice for Johnston. “As a student I lived in Burwash residences and had meals in the beautiful dining hall. Today, I feel a great sense of nostalgia for the campus. I know that with tender care and loving, every building and space at Vic U can evolve to meet the needs of today’s students.” For more information about how you can support Victoria University, please contact Louise Yearwood, executive director, Office of Alumni Affairs & Advancement at louise.yearwood@utoronto.ca or Mary Heinmaa, director of philanthropy at mary.heinmaa@utoronto.ca or call 416-585-4500.

new lecture series, launching in January 2024, will offer students, faculty, staff and alumni at Victoria University and the broader University of Toronto community unique perspectives from public figures with stature in the fields of law, economics, diplomacy, social justice or advocacy thanks to a gift from Stephen Coxford Vic 7T4. The $350,000 gift from the Victoria College alumnus is a significant contribution towards the University’s campaign, Defy Gravity: The Campaign for Victoria University. Coxford serves as a volunteer member of the campaign cabinet. Victoria University is delighted to announce that the inaugural Coxford Lecture at Victoria College will feature Mark Carney, former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England

The lecture will take place on January 31 in the Isabel Bader Theatre. The Coxford Lecture at Victoria College will be presented annually and will address one of the great public policy issues of the day. It will be presented as one of the plenary lectures offered as part of the University’s award-winning first-year program, Vic One. “Stephen Coxford’s gift is both inspiring and deeply meaningful. As an alumnus, he understands so well the student experience at Victoria College and has remained connected to us throughout his distinguished career. His desire to offer the University community access to the most creative and intellectually compelling leaders in their fields will undoubtedly impact how students and the wider U of T community consider their own roles in shaping the world,” says Dr. Rhonda N. McEwen, president and vicechancellor of Victoria University in the University of Toronto. Coxford offered his congratulations to the faculty, current students and

alumni who gathered for Vic One’s 20th anniversary event on April 13, 2023, in the Isabel Bader Theatre. “It is a pleasure to be able to support an annual lecture at Victoria College. It is my hope that the speaker each year inspires members of the University community and contributes to the intellectual and academic mission of the College. I offer my sincere congratulations to all those involved with the Vic One program and to its alumni for sharing their intellectual curiosity and for inspiring us all with their many achievements,” said Coxford.

“It is my hope that the speaker each year inspires members of the University community and contributes to the intellectual and academic mission of the College.” The anniversary event featured special guest speakers that included the Honourable Bob Rae, Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations and recipient of an honorary doctorate from Victoria University; Professor David Wright, former ambassador to NATO; and a panel led by President Emeritus Paul Gooch. Chancellor Emerita Wendy Cecil C.M., Vic 7T1, honorary chair of the campaign cabinet, announced Coxford’s gift to rousing applause from the audience.

Scholarships a Necessity for Students of Emmanuel College By Sally Szuster

F

or second-year Emmanuel College PhD student Hye Lim Yoon, scholarships make the difference between affording basic necessities such as food and housing and being able to continue her academic studies. “The financial pressure is very alive and present in my life,” she explains. Yoon chose to pursue her doctoral studies at Emmanuel College after completing her Master of Divinity at Princeton Theological Seminary because she found an inspirational mentor in Rev. Dr. HyeRan Kim-Cragg Emm 0T6, principal of Emmanuel College. “I’d met Professor Kim-Cragg at a conference focused on Asian women in theology and we just really connected. Our areas of research, specifically homiletics (preaching), were very similar and I knew that she would be the right fit for me as supervisor for my PhD. I feel very lucky to have found my academic home at Emmanuel, but for students like me, scholarships aren’t just nice to have—they are a necessity to pursuing our studies.” Their academic focus isn’t the only thing Kim-Cragg and Yoon have in common. Both are from Korea, a country with a long history and deep roots in the United Church and Emmanuel College which was developed through United Church missionaries to Korea 125 years ago. In 1928, the year Emmanuel College opened, the first Korean student to join Emmanuel, Rev. Jaerin Moon, was also the first recipient of a Korean scholarship from the United Church. Since then, more than a hundred Korean Emmanuel College graduates have made important contributions to theology, ministry, social activism around democratization, peace, gender justice and unification issues, and have been recipients of scholarships and awards. Nineteen per cent of current graduate degree students at Emmanuel are Korean. “Dr. Kim-Cragg’s leadership at Emmanuel and the time that she’s spent connecting with Korean theological schools have really raised Emmanuel’s profile in my country,” says Yoon.

From left: Pamela McCarroll, vice-principal and Jane and Geoffrey Martin Chair in Practical Theology; students Hye Lim Yoon and Sungmin Park; Principal HyeRan Kim-Cragg; and student Jaemin Lee at a scholarship fundraising event.

At an Emmanuel College fundraising event in October to raise funds for scholarships for Korean students, Yoon had the opportunity to meet Korean Emmanuel alumni/alumnae, some of whom grew up in Canada. “It was very empowering to learn about their work, their ministry and the impact they are having in their communities,” she says. “As an international student it can be difficult to connect my Korean identity with my studies. Meeting alumni/alumnae with similar experiences to mine really helped me to embrace that identity.” As an international student, Yoon’s tuition costs are close to four times higher than Canadian students. The scholarship that she received from Emmanuel covers her tuition for her first four years and some living expenses; however, it is rare for a student to complete a PhD in only four years. “It can take international students even longer to complete their PhD because they must also navigate language and cultural obstacles,” says Yoon. “I am very excited that Emmanuel is fundraising to support student scholarships, including scholarships specifically for Korean students. Not only will it help advance important academic work, but it will also further cement an enduring relationship between Korea and Emmanuel College.” Despite the financial challenges, Yoon has no regrets about choosing Emmanuel College. “I now have the best professors I’ve ever had in my life,” she says. If you wish to support scholarships at Emmanuel College, or the Korean Scholarship Fund specifically, please contact Ruth-Ann MacIntyre, senior development officer in the Office of Alumni Affairs & Advancement at Victoria University, at r.macintyre@utoronto.ca.

Class Is Castled: The Bursary That Sends You to Study at Herstmonceux By Dan Blackwell

Students also get the chance to live minutes away from the castle in nearby Bader Hall. “This was my first experience living in residence,” says Urban. “The student life was great and the setting was beautiful. Most of the students there were from different parts of Canada, but the actual environment that we were in was completely British and completely intercultural.” Urban says he loved the range of extracurricular activities, including hikes, visits to the in-castle pub for evening trivia and trips throughout East Sussex. “Each day was different,” he says. “It brought a lot of excitement.” One highlight was a midterm sojourn to London, where the class visited the British Film Institute and saw a movie exploring the history of the European Union. It brought together art and political science, reflecting Bader College’s interdisciplinary approach to learning. Urban is now back in Canada, studying at Victoria College. While he says he’ll forever cherish the memories of his time abroad, it’s the newfound sense of curiosity instilled in him at Herstmonceux that will have the most enduring impact. “This opened my eyes to new possibilities and ways of thinking,” he says. “The program exposed me to students and professors interested in so many diverse academic pursuits. I’ve never experienced learning that was so engaging and so personal!”

E

asily mistaken for something from the pages of a fairy tale, Herstmonceux Castle is a picturesque 15th-century moated castle in rural England. Throughout its storied history, the castle grounds have hosted everything from royalty to a royal observatory. Now, the castle is home to Bader College— and, thanks to the Bader International Bursary, a select group of talented Victoria College students.

“While the Bader International Bursary is one of hundreds of scholarships, bursaries and awards offered by Victoria College, the unique experience it provides for students makes it truly exceptional,” says Louise Yearwood, executive director of Alumni Affairs & Advancement at Victoria University. “Isabel Bader believed that an international experience was an important learning opportunity for students,” she says. “It gave her tremendous pleasure to support this particular student award.”

For Lukas Urban, a third-year student majoring in political science and art history, studying at Herstmonceux was lifechanging. “I wanted to experience something different,” he says. “How many chances are there in a person’s life to go study in a castle?” As a recipient of the bursary, Urban enjoyed the full Herstmonceux experience. It covers up to $13,500 for one term of study at Bader College and is granted to students to support their participation in the International Studies Program. The college, purchased by philanthropist Alfred Bader in 1993 and gifted to his late wife Isabel Overton Bader Vic 4T9, Hon. 9T5, offers small class sizes, interdisciplinary learning opportunities and courses taken right on the sprawling estate. Urban says the college’s unique learning environment allowed him to fully engage in his studies. “The small class sizes allow you to build a lasting relationship with your professor, where you learn about their history and experiences and how that informs the material they are teaching you,” he says.

This unique student experience was made possible thanks to the generosity of the late Isabel Bader. To learn more about how you can support student scholarships, awards and bursaries, visit vicu.utoronto.ca/giving. VIC VISIONARIES AUTUMN 2023 5

Undergraduate Research Fuelled by Scholarships By Sally Szuster

Today, as a fourth-year Vic student majoring in literature and critical theory, Van Walsum is immersed in researching how teachers in the Toronto District School Board are using tools and resources to support students who identify as non-binary. “Kids are identifying as gender fluid at a younger age now, and they understand more than adults sometimes give them credit for. It’s important to understand what influences how teachers support their students and interpret school policy. They may feel hesitant about offering certain kinds of support because of political stressors,” says Van Walsum. “The emotions educators have may impact their decision-making, and if we have a better understanding of educators’ subjective responses—as well as what they attribute it to—we can see how established processes, policies and resources operate in Toronto.” Thanks to the Northrop Frye Centre at Victoria University, Van Walsum has found a home for their research. As an undergraduate fellow, they have access to postgraduate fellows and professors who provide mentorship. “The opportunity to work in labs with postgraduate students was incredibly inspiring to me. The Northrop Frye Centre also gives me a beautiful study space to work on my research,” explains Van Walsum. 6 VIC VISIONARIES AUTUMN 2023

hen Seavey van Walsum (they/ them) was coming out as non-binary during their high school years in a rural town in Maine, the support that they received from teachers, the school principal and other students made all the difference. “I didn’t know what supports there were for me, and if there was a right way or a wrong way of coming out,” says Van Walsum. “When the dean of my high school called me into the office to ask me what I needed and what the school could do better to support me, it made me feel better.”

Within higher education, research is more often seen as a graduate, PhD or master’s endeavour; however, Victoria College has prioritized undergraduate research, recognizing that students working on their bachelor’s degrees should also be builders of knowledge. The College has a full-time undergraduate research coordinator who helps students to connect their passions with research opportunities. Every year, Research Day gives undergraduate students the opportunity to publicly showcase their work. As undergraduate fellows, five students call the Northrop Frye Centre their research home at Vic U, thanks to philanthropic support from both Vic U and Vic alumni who provide the funds for the scholarship each student receives.

“I’m very grateful to the alumni who have chosen to encourage research through these scholarships." "It’s really given me the opportunity to cultivate my academic focus,” says Van Walsum, who will be pursuing a psychology degree next year. “I’ve been so supported! In particular, Professor Robert Davidson has offered not

only his moral support, but has also pushed me to focus on areas that I hadn’t previously considered,” says Van Walsum, whose research is also supervised by Professor Julia Forgie from the Education & Society program, and Professor Julie Moreau from the Department of Political Science. “The students at the Northrop Frye Centre inspire me every day. Research takes courage because you’re often asking tough questions, and it’s rarely a straightforward path to find answers. That’s why we are so committed to nurturing a convivial research community to support and learn from one another,” says Professor Robert Davidson, director of the centre. “Open and diverse academic dialogue gives students the opportunity to come together for meaningful conversations and to broaden their way of thinking.”

Gifts directed toward the Northrop Frye Centre help to expand the centre’s community of undergraduate fellows, who engage in these wonderful creative research opportunities and develop the skills they need to shape our rapidly changing world. If you would like to make a donation to the Northrop Frye Centre, please visit uoft.me/givetovic and enter “NFC” under the section "Other please specify.”

without teaching you what to think. The study of history teaches you how to tell a story, how to write, and it civilizes you—you are able to understand what is happening in the world,” Hamer says. The stellar reputation of its French Studies program was one of the reasons Devitt chose Victoria College. “Needless to say, I was not disappointed,” Devitt says. “The classes were very small... and many of my professors came straight from France, bringing their Citroen cars with them! While at Vic, I became bilingual in French and English, and this was vital to my profession as a French teacher.”

“History doesn’t repeat itself,” says David Hamer Vic 7T4. “But as Mark Twain is frequently quoted as saying, it often rhymes.” Hamer is alluding to a lesson he learned from his humanities education at Vic, yet Twain’s quote also serves as a powerful illustration of how philanthropy propels a cycle of one generation inspiring the next: as these acts of generosity unfold, they create a ripple effect of positive influence. Last June, Hamer met Marg Devitt Vic 7T4—almost 50 years after they both graduated from Vic—at an afternoon tea marking the 30th anniversary of Victoria University’s Heritage Society, which recognizes those who have made a provision for Emmanuel or Victoria colleges in their estate plan. Beyond graduating in the same year, Devitt and Hamer have a lot in common. They each have strong family connections to Vic that demonstrate history’s rhythmic 10 VIC VISIONARIES AUTUMN 2023

cadence, and they are committed to continuing the cycle through giving. They also both credit their Vic education with launching their careers. Hamer, a recently retired litigation lawyer, studied history and English literature. “I owe a lot to Vic,” he says. “Because of my education here, I won a Rhodes Scholarship and went to Oxford where I also studied history.”

She also honed her athletic and leadership skills while living at Margaret Addison Hall. She served on the residence council and athletic councils at both Vic and U of T. Devitt, who still swims every day, was on the Women’s Varsity Swim Team and participated in many interfaculty sports—basketball, volleyball, golf and curling among others—both as an athlete and as a manager. “I was entrusted with the key to the Emmanuel College gymnasium, so I often encouraged my floormates to gather at the gym after study hours to enjoy a pick-up basketball game. On some occasions, Vic professors joined us for the fun,” Devitt remembers. In her graduating year, she was awarded the Vic Stick in recognition of her involvement with and devotion to the College.

“Studying humanities teaches you how to think without teaching you what to think.”

Family ties are another common thread in their decision to attend Victoria College. Devitt wanted to follow in the footsteps of her grandfather S. G. Devitt, who was a member of the Victoria College Class of 1913.

Hamer is grateful to Vic and the “wonderful professors” he studied with, including Northrop Frye, C. C. Love, and Jane Millgate, for instilling in him a passion for the humanities. “Studying humanities teaches you how to think

Hamer’s parents, Gladys (Johnston) Hamer Vic 3T9 and Ian Hamer, met at a dance in Burwash Hall in the late 1930s. “My father was an engineer, so not a Vic grad, but he lived in North House. My mother lived in Annesley Hall.”

History rhymed several decades later when Hamer met his wife of 48 years, Jane (Macrae) Hamer Vic 7T4, on a blind date at a Caven House Christmas party. Above all, Devitt and Hamer share a desire to “pay it forward.” Some years ago, Devitt endowed a scholarship for Victoria College students in her and her grandfather’s names. She has also made

a bequest in her Will that will add to the scholarship fund.

Devitt hopes that these investments today will help Vic students tomorrow.

Hamer has also recently endowed a scholarship in his parents’ names. “I decided to start the scholarship now, while living, and complete the funding of it upon death through a provision in my Will.”

“By leaving these gifts, other Vic students will be able to make their own happy memories, long into the future. It is an investment that I know will reap unimaginable gains!”

The Victoria University Heritage Society was founded in 1992 to express the University’s enduring gratitude to those who have made a provision for Victoria or Emmanuel College in their estate plan. Benefits include membership in the Chancellor’s Council, which meets annually on Victoria’s Charter Day each October for a luncheon and panel discussion. Heritage Society members are also included in the University of Toronto’s King’s College Circle Heritage Society and receive special invitations to campus events. The list below includes members confirmed by the publication deadline. If you have included Victoria University in your Will or arranged another type of planned gift but do not see your name listed, please contact Sharon Gregory at 416-813-4050, toll-free at 1-888-262-9775 or email sharon.gregory@utoronto.ca.
