WELCOME! It’s our 88th season! Let’s get it off to a swinging, or rather, zipping, start with this exciting production of Tarzan. Welcome to the jungles of western Africa! I’ve always been attracted to Tarzan, not just because of the spectacle, which I love, but also because of the inspiring themes of holistic and universal acceptance and love. It also takes a soft but relevant stance on what it means to be an “outsider.” What it means to be caught between two vastly different versions of community, which is something that we are all discussing now on a national scale. This is, of course, a Disney property, but I think there is a lot to be taken away, especially when it comes to considering important questions like what constitutes a family? Do they have to look like you? Should they share the same customs or can you simply share love? One other theme in Tarzan that I, as a parent of eight-year-old twins, can certainly relate to is the old adage of “It takes a village.” That extends beyond the story we’re telling today and goes to the amazing and creative people who have worked tirelessly to put this production together. This team has been an absolute delight, with a “let’s try it” attitude that makes a director’s life so much easier. When I approached the cast about all the climbing, tumbling, squatting, crawling, monkey barring, and zip-lining I was wanting them to do, no one said, “No way.” When I asked our properties designer Scott to make a fully articulated but loosely defined jungle creature costume, his eyes lit up with possibilities. When I discussed the style of movement I was looking for in the production numbers, our outstanding choreographer Claire came in on day one with movement that absolutely blew me away. I could and should go on, but I’ve been told I only have so much space to boast about this group. Needless to say, they impress and inspire me, and I can’t wait for you to enjoy their talents! As with all Palo Alto Players productions, we tell stories that not only entertain, but also enliven and enrich our corner of the world. I can’t thank you enough for supporting your local theatre. It truly means the world to us. I implore you to spread your love of live theatre, enjoy both our productions and works at our neighbor theatres, and, most importantly, share your love of live theatre with your friends and family. Thank you for being here!

the ‘80s and beyond, which was probably as much a surprise to him as it was to many others. Balding and diminutive, the Genesis drummer-turned-vocalist was almost 30 years old when his first solo single, “In the Air Tonight,” became a number two hit in his native U.K. (the song was a Top 20 hit in the U.S.). Between 1984 and 1990, Collins had a string of 13 straight U.S. Top Ten hits. Long before any of that happened, however, Collins was a child actor-singer who appeared as the Artful Dodger in the London production of Oliver! in 1964. (He also has a cameo in A Hard Day’s Night, among other films.) He got his first break in music in his late teens, when he was chosen to be a replacement drummer in the British art rock band Genesis in 1970. (Collins maintained a separate jazz career with the band Brand X as well.) Genesis was fronted by singer Peter Gabriel. They had achieved a moderate level of success in the UK and the US with elaborate concept albums, before Gabriel abruptly left in 1974. Genesis auditioned 400 singers without success, then decided to let Collins have a go. The result was a gradual simplifying of Genesis’ sound and an increasing focus on Collins’ expressive, throaty voice. And Then There Were Three... went gold in 1978, and Duke was even more successful. Collins made his debut solo album, Face Value, in 1981, which turned out to be a bigger hit than any Genesis album. It concentrated on Collins’ voice, often in stark, haunting contexts such as the piano-and-

SHETH

drum dirge “In the Air Tonight,” which sounded like something from John Lennon’s debut solo album, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. During the ‘80s, Collins was enormously successful in balancing his continuing solo work with his membership in Genesis. In 1992, Genesis released We Can’t Dance and began an extensive tour. Upon its completion, Collins released Both Sides in 1993, and the record became his first album not to produce a major hit single or go multi-platinum. In 1995, he announced that he was leaving Genesis permanently. The following year, he released Dance Into the Light. Although the album didn’t chart highly, its subsequent supporting tour was a success. The Hits collection followed in 1998, and a year later Collins made his first big-band record, Hot Night in Paris. The song cycle Testify arrived in 2002, and his next studio-recorded solo release was 2010’s Going Back, which saw him revisiting the Motown hits that so influenced him and featured three of the surviving Funk Brothers – guitarists Eddie Willis and Ray Monette, and bassist Bob Babbitt. After some time spent out of the spotlight, much of it spent recovering from physical ailments, Collins returned in 2014 to play a couple of songs at his sons’ school and to write songs with Adele. Soon after, he began work on reissuing his solo albums, sorting through the archives for demos and live recordings to flesh them out. Beginning in early 2016, Warner Music Group began releasing the discs in pairs, with new portraits

of Collins on the covers in place of the original images. While rumors of autobiographies and world tours swirled, Collins did actually return to the stage in March of 2016, performing at Little Dreams Foundation Benefit Gala in Miami. DAVID HENRY HWANG (Book) was awarded the 1988 Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics, and John Gassner Awards for his Broadway debut, M. Butterfly, which was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. For his play Golden Child, he received a 1998 Tony nomination and a 1997 Obie Award. His new book for the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Flower Drum Song earned him his third Tony nomination in 2003. He was also a book writer on Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida. Hwang’s other plays include Fob (1981 Obie Award), The Dance and the Railroad, Family Devotions, The Sound of a Voice, Bondage, and Yellow Face. His opera libretti include three works for composer Philip Glass, 1000 Airplanes on the Roof, The Voyage, and The Sound of a Voice, as well as The Silver River with music by Bright Sheng and Ainadamar with Osvaldo Golijov. Hwang penned the feature films M. Butterfly, Golden Gate, and Possession (co-writer) and co-wrote the song “Solo” with composer-performer Prince. Hwang serves on the Dramatists Guild Council. his forty-eighth production with the company. Patrick has designed sets for many Players productions including Rock of Ages, Peter Pan, Into the Woods, and Big Fish. He has directed productions including The Man Who Came to Dinner, Young Frankenstein, Miss Saigon, Into the Woods, and Big Fish. When not at the Lucie Stern, Patrick is loving on his wife and eight-year-old twins, becoming emotionally attached to the local sports teams, and arguing with people on Twitter. He also has two gassy dogs that he feeds, walks, and wrestles with. “For my bambinos.” NICK KENRICK (Music Director) is ecstatic to be returning to the stage at Palo Alto Players, this time as a music director. Previously, he has performed on stage here as Jerry Lee Lewis in Million Dollar Quartet and Sir Galahad in Monty Python’s Spamalot. Other favorite credits include Jerry Lee Lewis in Million Dollar Quartet (Broadway By the Bay), Donkey in Shrek (Foothill Music Theatre), and Jean Valjean in Les Misérables (Peninsula Youth Theatre). As music director, Nick has worked on Rock of Ages (Palo Alto Players, assistant music director), as well as Cats, Mary Poppins, and Annie (Peninsula Youth Theatre). By day, he performs as a mechanical engineer at Intuitive Surgical. By night, Nick plays chess, MTG, banjo, and whatever board games he can get his hands on. CLAIRE ALEXANDER (Choreographer) grew up dancing at her mother’s studio in Southern California. She began teaching dance at age fifteen and has continued to choreograph and create many types of work for both youth and adults alike. After moving north to attend San José State University and receiving her BA in modern dance, Claire began teaching and choreographing for many Bay Area studios and schools.
