WELCOME TO THE PLAYHOUSE! Welcome to the Berkeley Playhouse and The Little Mermaid! This is the last production of our 15/16 season and our first Professional Season show as an artistic director team. As friends and collaborators for over fifteen years, we are thrilled for the future and delighted to bring this joyous production to you today. The powerful question that this beautiful and beloved story asks us is this: When is loving someone different than what may be expected of you a courageous act? Whether it's a different gender, race or background, it can take extreme bravery to love who you love. Ariel's journey toward Eric, even amidst her father's and community's disapproval, ultimately brings two very different worlds together and celebrates that love has the power to unite. We hope you are filled with joy and hope as you watch.

FROM THE DIRECTOR With a story by Hans Christian Anderson, a beautiful animated film written by John Musker and Ron Clements and an incredible score written by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken you have a recipe for magic. Disney’s The Little Mermaid is the film that inspired and launched what is now referred to as the Disney Renaissance. It also won two Academy Awards, for Best Score and Best Song. “Under the Sea” actually won the Grammy, Golden Globe and Oscar for Best Song that year. The Little Mermaid was considered by some as "the film that brought Broadway into cartoons.” The Little Mermaid has had quite an amazing journey. She began her life in 1836 as a story published by Hans Christian Anderson and then was adapted into a classic Disney animated film in 1989 which then lead to the Broadway production in 2008. Along the way, The Little Mermaid has inspired many artists, even Disney himself, who had considered a film version as early as 1940 and even had some storyboards drawn up which directly inspired the film makers of the movie we know and love. The Broadway production is not where the story ends though. After the production closed on Broadway early 2009, the creators saw that the show didn’t quite work the way they intended. So in 2012, with the help from teams at both Sacramento’s Music Circus and New Jersey’s Papermill Playhouse, a new script emerged. New songs were added, some songs were let go, and the script was restructured to flow more closely to the 1989 movie. I am so excited to be directing this show at Berkeley Playhouse. It is my all-time favorite Disney movie, and I was lucky enough to get to see both the pre-Broadway run in Denver and the rewritten production at Music Circus in Sacramento. The story of Disney’s The Little Mermaid is filled with magic, romance, adventure, humor and an Oscar-winning score from one of my very favorite composers. I couldn’t be happier or more proud of the cast, crew and team we’ve assembled for this production and I hope you enjoy your journey “Under the Sea” as we proudly present Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

A NOTE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR When I was asked to music direct The Little Mermaid last year, I jumped at the opportunity. I had the great fortune of growing up during the Disney Renaissance. That period from 1989-1999 when they had an amazing string of animated musical hits including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan and Tarzan. When The Little Mermaid was released in 1989, it won the Academy Award for Best Score and Best Song (“Under the Sea”). It’s not hard to see why. One only has to hear the opening few notes of marimba and steel drum to recognize Sebastian’s underwater dance party. To truly understand what is special about the music of The Little Mermaid, we have to look to its composer - Alan Menken. Menken has had a formidable career, composing music for over twenty films, including six of the musicals in the Disney Renaissance. The songs from The Little Mermaid are part of the cultural landscape of their era, and will continue to inspire for years to come! Rachel Robinson

known as a pivotal creative mind behind the renaissance of Disney animation and his work on The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast (which is dedicated to, "Our friend, Howard Ashman, who gave a Mermaid her voice and a Beast his soul..."). Ashman's first love was theatre. Ashman was a founder of Off Off Broadway's renowned WPA Theatre, where he conceived, wrote and directed God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, as well as the classic musical, Little Shop of Horrors (both with music by Alan Menken). In 1986, he wrote and directed the Broadway musical Smile (music by Marvin Hamlisch). Lamented as a lost treasure of the 1980s theatre scene, Smile remains popular on high school and college campuses throughout the country.
