Segundo relata o autor, a estrela e o ilustrador Alceu Penna ficaram amicíssimos durante uma temporada de ambos nos Estados Unidos. Alceu serviu de intérprete para Carmen e o Bando da Lua, além de contribuir com ideias para renovar sua imagem. O desenhista fez também uma série de sugestões para ‘renovar’ o guarda roupa da cantora. Adicionou, inclusive, saias multicoloridas, os turbantes fantásticos e os sapatões de solas grossas. Desenhou também as suas fantasias quando ela foi para Hollywood. Foi o criador da primeira fantasia genuinamente brasileira usada por Carmen: a baiana. Cabe a ele também a criação das roupas usadas pelos músicos, uma mistura no mínimo exótica de fantasia: calça de smoking com sapatos e camisas listradas, traje típico cubano. Na cabeça, usariam chapéu Panamá. Carmen deve a Alceu também o movimento que se tornou uma de suas marcas registradas: o gesto de fazer ondas pela ponta da saia com o braço.
