Fort Monroe’s Casemate Museum Fort Monroe, a National Monument, is the largest stone fort ever built in the United States. Located within the fort’s walls, the Casemate Museum chronicles the over 400-year history of Old Point Comfort and Fort Monroe. During the Civil War, Fort Monroe was a Union-held bastion and sheltered thousands of enslaved freedom seekers. Visit the cell where Confederate President Jefferson Davis was imprisoned. Other must-see sites within walking distance of the museum include Lee’s Quarters, the Chapel of the Centurion, Quarters #1, the Lincoln Gun and the Old Point Comfort Lighthouse.
