50 Years

Celebrating of Engineering Magnitude... and Tunneling Towards the Future.

1964 was a remarkable year in history. The Beatles ruled the radio airwaves with nine solid hits; the Ford Motor Company unveiled a new kind of car to the public called the Mustang; and Martin Luther King, Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize. In the midst of this historic year, the Chesapeake Bay BridgeTunnel, the largest engineering project in the world and one of mankind’s greatest engineering achievements, opened to traffic on April 15, eliminating the last water barrier along the Atlantic coast and providing an east coast scenic shortcut for travelers coming to Virginia from points north of Wilmington, Delaware. More than just an engineering marvel, this graceful crossing of the Chesapeake Bay provides a route of scenic beauty for travelers and has been enjoyed by millions of

people who have crossed the facility in the past 50 years. It continues to be one of Virginia’s #1 attractions most frequently visited by travelers who visit the Hampton Roads/Eastern Shore regions of the Commonwealth.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel

One Of The Seven Engineering Wonders Of The Modern World For 50 years the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel has captured worldwide attention as a modern engineering marvel and an important East Coast travel convenience. Crossing over and under the open waters where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Chesapeake Bay, it provides a direct link between Virginia’s Eastern Shore and the mainland of Coastal Virginia. To date, over 115 million vehicles have crossed the Bridge-Tunnel. From shore to shore, the facility measures 17.6 miles and it is considered to be the world’s largest bridge-tunnel complex. It includes more than 12 miles of low-level trestle, two one-mile-long tunnels, two bridges, two miles of causeway, four manmade islands, and 5.5 miles of approach roads, for a total of 23 miles of structures. Construction of the original two-lane Bridge-Tunnel began in 1960 and was completed in 1964 at a cost of $200 million. In 1999 a second span was opened that parallels the original, and increased the roadway from two lanes to four, at a cost of $197.2 million. Parallel tunnels are expected to be constructed in the future. Travelers may enjoy the natural beauty, sights and sounds of the Chesapeake Bay from the Bridge-Tunnel’s southernmost island, One Island on the Bay. Featuring a bayside restaurant serving delicious Virginia-inspired cuisine, a gift shop complete with specialty items and souvenirs, and a 625-foot fishing pier located 3.5 miles out in the middle off the Chesapeake Bay, this is one stop you won’t want to miss! Incredible bird watching opportunities are here as well. 6

Each fall, like colorful clockwork, it’s the scene of a spectacular drama as millions of songbirds, monarch butterflies and thousands of raptors converge here on their voyage south. Hiking and biking trails put you in the action. The Refuge’s excellent visitor center tells the story of the bird migrations and the native plants and animals of the Eastern Shore.

Cheriton Cheriton is home to Eyre Hall, one of Virginia’s finest and best-preserved colonial homes. Eyre family descendents have owned land in the lower portion of Northampton County continuously for 12 generations. The gardens are among the oldest in the country and are open free to the public. Ancient boxwood and gnarled crape myrtles tower over the traditional swept paths, all enclosed by a wall of brick brought as ballast from England. The entrance is located on the west side of Route 13 between Cheriton and Eastville at 3215 Eyre Hall Drive.

Chincoteague Island

“America’s Best Beach Town” – AOL Travel Chincoteague Island is the family-friendly resort famed for its wild ponies, but with all it has to offer it’s far from a one-horse town. Its beautiful beaches, abundant wildlife, artists, antiques, fresh seafood, shopping, and accommodations make it one of the Mid-Atlantic’s favorite vacation destinations. Adjacent Assateague Island is an impressive national treasure that is home to the famous herd of wild Chincoteague ponies. Its wide, pristine Atlantic Ocean beach is one of the few spots on the U.S. east coast that is preserved in its natural, undeveloped state. Swimming, boating, kayaking, surf fishing and sunbathing are the traditional family beach activities enjoyed during the warm weather months. Hikers, bikers, birders and other wildlife lovers enjoy their passion year-round at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Don’t forget to climb to the top of the historic Assateague Lighthouse for a view of it all. Expert guides will take you on the water to enjoy the gorgeous salt marsh views and to learn about the area’s abundant seafood, shellfish, wild ponies and other wildlife. Each year in July the wild ponies on Assateague Island are rounded up by “saltwater cowboys” for the swim across the channel to Chincoteague, where they are paraded to the carnival grounds and penned. Some of the foals are auctioned off to benefit the island’s volunteer fire department and to keep the pony population at a manageable level. The herd is then returned to Assateague Island where they will live in the wild for another year. Shopping in Chincoteague’s quaint, pedestrian-friendly downtown ranges from decoys to dresses and antiques to art. Visit the 1945 Island Theatre to catch a movie the old-fashioned way. Second Saturday Art Strolls are popular evening events from April through November. Fresh-off-the-dock seafood is found in a variety of restaurants. Lodging is equally varied from family-owned motels to charming B&Bs. The Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center is located at 6733 Maddox Boulevard. Life on this jewel of an island in the Chesapeake Bay has changed little over the years. Take the 12-mile ferry ride from Onancock and sail back in time to a place where the islanders speak in an endearing sing-song Elizabethan twang and make their living from the water. Visitors enjoy the island’s fresh seafood bounty at several home-style restaurants. Rent bikes or Tangier taxis (golf carts) to cruise the car-less isle. The new Tangier History Museum & Interpretive Cultural Center and self-guided history walk give insight to the island’s enduring heritage. Pristine sandy beaches are excellent for relaxing. Take a Waterman’s Tour with a Tangier captain to discover the island’s legendary soft-shell crab “farms” (contact the Chesapeake House at 757-891-2331). Free kayak rentals and mapped water trails bring you to secluded vistas. Come twilight, rock on the porch of the Bay View Inn and listen to the creatures of the marsh softly serenade Cruise the Chesapeake Bay to and from Tangier Island aboard the island. DID YOU KNOW? This tiny island community has attracted the attention of linguists because many of its residents still speak a unique English Restoration-era dialect of American English. Due to centuries of isolation, the islanders still speak much as their ancestors did when Tangier was settled in 1686. The dialect is still strong enough that visitors sometimes have to pay close attention to what is being said.

CALENDAR / BLAST OFF!

Blast Off! Experience the Thrill of Immense New Rocket Launches Near Chincoteague

In 2013 NASA’s Wallops Island Flight Facility near Chincoteague became the site of new space launches that have thrilled space fans around the world. Visitors flock to watch NASA launch huge new Antares rockets and the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE, pronounced like “laddie”), a robotic mission that will orbit the moon to gather detailed information about the lunar atmosphere, conditions near the surface, and environmental influences on lunar dust. These launches rival the past Space Shuttle launches at Florida’s Cape Canaveral for their bone-jarring sound and majesty. You can experience it all from the beach at the nearby Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge or other viewing spots near Chincoteague. For information on launch dates and planning your visit please go to www.esvatourism.org/space.

NASA Visitor Center at Wallops Flight Facility Did you know that NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility is where the U.S space program began? The first research rocket lifted off from the island in 1945. Wallops also put the first female into orbit, a Resus monkey named Miss Sam. She paved the way for Alan Shepard, the first American to visit space. At NASA’s Visitor Center no spacecraft is needed to have an astronaut’s-eye-view of the planets and moon. Among its many entertaining and educational exhibits is the new Science On A Sphere Theatre. A six-foot-diameter globe provides stunning visual effects from real scientific data. The animated sphere seems to float in space, just as an astronaut would see the Earth! Located on Route 175 near Chincoteague, 757-824-2298.

DID YOU KNOW? Legend claims that the Chincoteague Ponies are the descendents of wild mustangs that swam ashore after a Spanish galleon sank off the coast in the 1600s. Others say that early European settlers turned their herds loose to graze tax-free and later escaped. Either way, the wild Chincoteague Ponies have earned the affection of millions worldwide.

Author Marguerite Henry penned her beloved children’s classic Misty of Chincoteague in 1947. Its popularity spawned a 1961 Hollywood movie, Misty, that was filmed in Chincoteague and featured many island residents. Today, visitors in search of Misty can visit Miss Molly’s Inn on Main Street to see where Henry dreamed up the pony story. You can also see where Misty once frolicked at the Beebe Ranch, and at the downtown Island Theater where Misty once strolled the aisles. Misty and her foal, Stormy, are preserved at the Museum of Chincoteague Island. A bronze statue at the town’s Waterfront Park commemorates the pony that put this delightful island on the map.
