SPRING/SUMMER 2017

LETTER

from the EDITOR

It’s one of the first things an engaged couple does that really defines the tone of their big day—setting the date. Some brides dream of a winter wedding with snow and a fur coat, while others want to dance outside on a summer night with family and friends. With so many changing styles and trends between seasons, Central Virginia Bridal Guide wanted to set a new date as well. We are very excited to release this first ever Spring/ Summer Edition. Our goal is to help brides-to-be have the most pertinent, current and seasonal information as they plan their perfect event. In this issue, we are tackling another major decision for a couple—the venue. Before you fall in love with a location or sign a contract, you will want to read about the 10 questions you should ask first on page 9. Getting these answers will help you make a more informed decision and save you some headaches down the road. We are also helping you with perhaps the next big item on a bride and groom’s list—the photos. The Knot did a survey and found that 9 out of 10 couples hire a professional and the amount they are willing to spend is going up each year. So make sure you get your money’s worth! On page 19, check out advice from local brides on how to make sure you capture those “best moments.” If you like to keep your style with what’s trending, get inspiration from our photo feature starting on page 25. Our gorgeous models show off some of the top looks from Ashley Grace Bridal at Bedford Columns. You can also find some popular flower ideas there as well as on page 17 where we take a look at your top options for spring and summer. But on the flipside, we are also looking at another bride “trend”… to be different. Millennial brides are changing the wedding industry with their bold choices and courage to try new or untraditional things. Local wedding planners and others weigh in on this new generation of brides on page 36. Trendy or traditional, winter or summer—remember that aside from all the choices you make about your special wedding day, you already made the best choice possible… the day you said “yes.”

The Central Virginia Bridal Guide is a fundamental resource for brides offering events, checklists, tips, services, advertisements, and articles. The Bridal Guide prints a minimum of 20,000 guides per year and offers a complete service directory designed to refer brides to your products and services. Our goal is to appeal to brides by offering the most complete information and resource-filled guide this area has to offer. inding the perfect wedding venue can be overwhelming. Beyond looking for the picture-perfect backdrop for

your big day, there are many other things to consider: parking, linens, staffing, etc. When touring different venues, it’s easy to fall in love with the location. But be sure to read the fine print. Before you sign a contract, be prepared with these 10 questions: 

VENUE TIPS

DEREK FOWLER PHOTOGRAPHY

HOW MANY TABLES AND CHAIRS CAN YOU PROVIDE? It’s important to know how many guests the venue can accommodate. Also, ask to see the tables and chairs that will be used. If the furniture doesn’t match your style, ask if the venue would allow a rental company to provide tables and chairs for your event.

DO YOU INCLUDE LINENS? Some venues offer linen service, but some do not. Ask what kind of tablecloths, table runners, and napkins are available, if any. The most common color palettes are white and cream. If you’re looking for something different, you may want to get an estimate from a third-party linen service that offers more variety.

DO YOU PROVIDE SIGNAGE TO DIRECT GUESTS TO EVENTS ON PROPERTY? This little detail goes a long way. Guests will feel more relaxed if they know exactly where to go for the ceremony, appetizers, dinner, dancing, and the send-off. If the venue doesn’t include signage, consider bringing your own or renting signs from a local company like Vintage or Scripted (look them up on Facebook for style inspiration). Using antique mirrors or chalkboard signs is a great way to incorporate your wedding theme. Plus, the signs can communicate information about where to sit, what’s on the menu, and what hashtag to use. 

VENUE TIPS

WHERE WILL GUESTS PARK, AND HOW MANY CARS DOES THE PARKING LOT ACCOMMODATE? Make sure there’s room for everyone on your guest list. Ask yourself how the parking will impact your guests. Will the ladies be walking through a dirt or gravel lot in heels? Will guests have to park on the street and walk a considerable distance wearing formal attire? If the parking situation is complex, give your guests advance notice on your wedding website.

WHAT’S THE BACK-UP PLAN FOR BAD WEATHER? “Start imagining your wedding while you walk the grounds,” says Julie Hostler at The 1752 Estate. Imagine a variety of weather, too. What if it rains? What about high winds? Will the temperature be too hot or too cold? The right venue will have solutions for each of these scenarios.

DO YOU PROVIDE STAFFING FOR SERVING, SET UP, CLEAN UP, ETC.? You’d be surprised how many venues don’t provide any staff at all. The church where I got married had no staffing arrangements for cleaning up, so my bridal party had to work overtime. Ask in advance if your venue will provide an event coordinator, audio/ visual support, food service professionals, and a cleaning crew.

WHAT KIND OF FEES DO YOU CHARGE? “No one likes to be surprised with hidden costs,” says Hostler. “Always ask what is included in the price.” In addition to rental fees, your venue may charge booking fees, setup fees, management fees, etc. Don’t be caught off guard by these extra fees—ask about them up front.

Nestled deep in the rolling wooded hills of southern Virginia, there’s a place where time holds its breath. A place where serenity lingers under every gently swaying tree branch. A place where timeless elegance rests with the gentleness of love’s first kiss. The place is The 1752, a world class special event and wedding venue. Located on 118 gorgeous acres, The 1752 offers facilities unrivaled by any in the area, including a luxurious inground pool, 5-acre lake, and pavilion equipped with a state of the art sound system and 75-inch flat screen television.

VENUE TIPS

WHAT RULES DO WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT? Venues often establish a set of guidelines for event use. For example, some venues might not allow pets or alcohol on premises. You should know about such restrictions before signing a contract. If you come across a rule that will affect your plans, see if they will make an exception for your wedding. It never hurts to ask!

WHAT KIND OF PACKAGES DO YOU OFFER? Every venue is unique. Ask about different rental packages, what they include, and the pricing. Kelly Heckman at Winridge Manor offers some great advice about selecting a package that will fit your style. “If you are a bride who adores DIY projects and really wants to have a ‘handson’ creative touch for your special day, ask your venue about packages that allow this. If you are a bride who wants very little stress and you prefer to have everything done for you, find an all-inclusive package.”

CAN YOU PROVIDE REFERENCES? Your venue should have a list of satisfied customers. Ask if you can contact their references, and check sources like Yelp and the venue’s Facebook page to read reviews. Ultimately, you want to know that other brides were happy with the venue and its services.

a

REMEMBER—WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING A VENUE, IT’S ALL ABOUT WHAT YOU LOVE. “WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE, FOLLOW YOUR HEART,” SAYS HECKMAN. “WHEN YOU FIND THAT ONE SPECIAL PLACE TO BEGIN YOUR ‘HAPPILY EVER AFTER,’ YOU’LL KNOW IT.” PHOTOS BY DEREK FOWLER PHOTOGRAPHY

How to Get the Wedding Photos You Want By Emily Hedrick

M

ost of the myriad components that go into a wedding are utilized on the wedding day alone: the wedding gown

and tuxes, the flowers, the food, the cake, etc. Wedding photographs, however, capture and preserve these ephemeral items, making them timeless. More importantly, these photographs capture and preserve images of you and your spouse, along with your family and friends, basking in the love and fun of your special day. Choosing the right wedding photographer is certainly one of the most important wedding decisions you will make, but it is also important to know what kind of photos you do and don’t want and to communicate with your photographer to ensure that you are on the same page. Read on for advice from local brides on what worked, what didn’t, and how to get photos you will treasure for a lifetime.

#1: SPLURGE FOR A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER IF POSSIBLE When allocating funds to different parts of your wedding, you may want to consider putting the photographer at the top of your list. Professional photographers have not only the experience to bring your vision to life, but also the LORI HEDRICK PHOTOGRAPHY

intuition to capture amazing shots that you may not have even considered. My husband, Bryan, and I got married at Natural Bridge in September 2013, and we chose Lori Hedrick Photography as our photographer. We were so impressed by Lori’s ability to creatively incorporate the bridge into many of our photos, especially since we hadn’t discussed doing so before the wedding. 

Kegan and Amanda Shaw chose Megan Vaughan Photography to capture their May 2013

ALLEN & PRUE MILLER

wedding at The Trivium. “Photography was one of the most important aspects of our wedding so we did a lot of research,” Amanda says. “I was most drawn to the style of soft and natural lighting and professional editing. My mom found the website of Megan Vaughan Photography one day, and her style stood out to us so we decided to contact her to see if she was available. Luckily, she was!” Allen and Prue Miller, who married in July 1980 at their Richmond church, had a friend take their wedding photos. “A friend of mine took our wedding pictures,” Prue says. “He was a fairly good photographer and offered that as a gift to us. We were trying to save money and decided that would be one way we could. He got some

great pictures... and some not so great! I wish we had hired a professional photographer! Even though many of our wedding photos were good,

they have not stood the test of time very well.”

#2: USE PINTEREST AS A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION, NOT REPLICATION Although Pinterest is an invaluable source of wedding inspiration, try not to obsess over recreating every shot you’ve pinned. “I had plenty of ideas I had seen on Pinterest, but I didn’t want an overload of these ideas, as I was ready and willing to go with the flow as well and let Megan bring her experience and ideas to the table,” Amanda says. “It’s so easy to come with an overwhelming amount of ideas and trends in your head, but sometimes it’s better to come with an open mind. At the end of the day, it didn’t matter if I got that perfect Pinterest shot I had seen online—I had a collection of unique photos to call my own, with memories of one of the most special occasions of my life.”

#3: REQUEST PLENTY OF CANDID SHOTS Candid shots often end up being our favorite shots (in general, not just for weddings) because they capture raw, genuine emotion. “Ask for lots of candids!” Prue advises. “They record the ‘moment’ but also capture the emotions! They also allow the bride and groom to see what was going on that day that they might otherwise have missed. My favorite picture is a candid our friend snapped just after the ceremony when my brand new husband and I had left the sanctuary and

DEREK FOWLER PHOTOGRAPHY

were waiting outside the church before going back in to take photographs. He captured the excitement, the pure joy of the moment!” Amanda’s favorite photo is a candid shot of her father, Stephen Hodge, escorting her down the stairs before the ceremony. “In the image I am walking in front, and my dad is holding the train of my gown, looking over the banister at the camera with a large grin on his face,” she says. “It is such a precious image snapped within very crucial seconds, and you can feel his pride and joy emulate from the picture.” 

#4: REQUEST PHOTOS OF PEOPLE WHO ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU AND OF SPECIAL MOMENTS

DEREK FOWLER PHOTOGRAPHY

CASEY THARPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Of course, not every wedding photo can or should be a candid shot; you want to ensure that special people and moments from your day are documented. “There were certain photos of various wedding traditions I knew I wanted to have captured,” Amanda says. “[Among these photos were] the picture of my groom’s face when his bride starts walking down the aisle, the first kiss as a married couple, cutting the cake and putting it on each other’s face, and running through the wave of sparklers to the getaway car. Another favorite picture is of Kegan and me holding hands behind a door. We decided to hold hands and pray together instead of a first look photo. We couldn’t see each other but could feel the emotion in the moment.”

DEREK FOWLER PHOTOGRAPHY

As Prue explains, “We did come up with a list ahead of time so that we would be sure to get photographs of all the people and groups we wanted to. Be sure and get photos with elderly people who are important to you. One of my favorites is of us with my paternal grandparents who have both since died. My grandfather is by my side and my grandmother is by Allen’s side, holding his hand. I still get choked up when I look at it!”

#5: BE YOURSELF! “Be yourself” may be the most cliché of all

DEREK FOWLER PHOTOGRAPHY

clichés, but it is the single most important thing DEREK FOWLER PHOTOGRAPHY

you can do in your wedding photographs— both in terms of how you look and how you act in front of the camera. When Bryan and I first got engaged, I pretty much immediately got on Pinterest and started pinning elaborate hairstyle and makeup ideas that bore little to no resemblance to my everyday look. As our wedding drew closer, however, I found that I was feeling anxious about pulling off these new styles. I decided to keep my hair and makeup simple and similar to my daily look (I added a bit of drama by wearing red lipstick), and I’m so glad I did. The comfort I felt in how I looked definitely shows in our wedding photos. Additionally, because Bryan and I are both on the introverted side, we didn’t take any overthe-top silly photos with our bridal party. I love looking at other people’s intentionally funny bridal party photos, but we probably would have made it look forced! Regardless of your and your spouse’s personalities (which may be quite different!), your photos will come across as genuine if you are both true to yourselves.

The site offered a wide range of fun activities that were enjoyed by family members of all ages. It was more than just a wedding…it was an experience, one we will treasure for the rest of our lives”; said the new Mrs. Payne. The bride and groom’s love of the outdoors, coupled with their relaxed personal style, made the Hammersley Center the ideal location for the wedding of their dreams. “Their professional team was very attentive in fulfilling our needs, making the entire experience stress-free, while still allowing the freedom to add our individual flair,” stated Payne. “It’s a return to glamour—traditional, opulent looks [and] getting away from the rustic look that’s been so popular for years. We’re still getting requests for that but not as much as a couple of years ago.” Sheilah Mercer, manager at Church Street Bridal in Lynchburg, agreed. “Right

now it’s lace, lace and more lace. I can’t say lace enough,” she said, before joking, “I feel like if I have one more bride come in and say, ‘Lace,’ I’m going to scream.” When it comes to footwear, however, Mercer said it’s still common to see Millennial brides forego the more traditional, dyed bridal shoes for something with more character. “The thing in our area of Virginia is cowboy boots,” she said. “They love to show their personality. The wedding dress is kind of a rule, but you show your personality through your shoes.” Another change local wedding planners have seen with Millennials concerns who’s planning the nuptials. “One of the real differences I see is I really work with the bride and groom,” Morgan, who’s been hosting

It’s not to say the mother isn’t involved, but typically the bride and groom are older and they really, for the most part, seem to know what they want. They know the look they want.” Boardman said today’s brides are “more independent” and “for the most part 

With Millennials, "something a little different" appears to be a trend in itself. Another Millennial trend is the “naked cake.” Before you Google that and get yourself into trouble, a naked cake is frosted between the layers but not on the sides. Between the layers might be crammed with icing, candies or fruit, for example, but the sides are bare. Thus, “naked cake.” Some brides are choosing not to have cake at all. “Most of my brides are thinking uniquely,” Morgan said. “They might not even have cake. They might have little pies for everyone. Not so much the cupcakes anymore, but they’re looking for something a little different.” With Millennials, “something a little different” appears to be a trend in itself. “The more different anything is, I love it,” Sutton said. “I love it, love it, love it. I think anyone should do anything. I think people get excited about, ‘No one’s done this. I’m going to do it.”

long weekend GETAWAYS 3 Virginia Destinations to Make Wonderful Honeymoon Memories

By Megan L. Horst

M

aybe you do not have time to take a long trip after you say “I do” but still want to get away and make those first special memories as husband and wife. Within driving distance of Lynchburg, there are many long weekend getaway options.

“Myrtle Beach is always popular,” said Steve Arthur, owner and president of Travel Lovers in Lynchburg.

If you are looking for a city destination, he recommends Hotel Roanoke and The Jefferson in Richmond. “A honeymoon is always remembered,” Arthur said. “And the couple will regret not doing something.” Although there are many wonderful honeymoon spots in this region, Arthur says the following are three unique and charming establishments that are worth looking into.

THE TIDES INN – Irvington, Va. “If you’re looking for a couples’ getaway, and making a long weekend out of it, definitely take advantage of our activities on site,” said Laurie Eichman, catering and conference service manager. One popular activity for couples is riding bikes through the town of Irvington, stopping at shops and the vineyard. “We have a cove cruise on site,” she said. “That’s a really fun activity if you want to get out on the water. It takes you around some of the hidden coves... you get to learn a little bit about the area and the history with the oysters.” Passengers also get to see some of the spots where oystering takes place. “It’s really fun, especially if you’re a history nerd like me,” Eichman said. Additionally, the Inn has a restaurant on site, and they offer private dining for the couples who prefer to have a romantic dining experience away from everyone else. Another cozy place on site is the pool and beach area, which includes a fire pit for s’mores, or just for enjoying the ambiance of the warm flickering flames. “We also have a spa on site, so we could do a couples’ massage,” Eichman said. “We also have an 18-hole golf course, so if they are golfers, that might be the spot for them.” “We’ve had honeymooners ever since the Inn opened,” Eichman said. And because the Inn opened in 1947, there are now many second and third generation honeymooners. Couples are also choosing to have their wedding reception at the Inn where their grandparents honeymooned. “Once you’re on the Northern Neck and you’re surrounded by the water…it does feel like you’re a world away,” Eichman said. 

BOAR’S HEAD INN – Charlottesville, Va. If you are looking for a small city destination that has history, dining, and a variety of local attractions, Boar’s Head might be the perfect place for you. With 175 renovated rooms and suites, they strive to create an inviting retreat, capturing the Southern heritage of historic Charlottesville. “We celebrate what endures, the beauty of the land, the hospitality of our people, the grace of our traditions,” said Ann Walker, director of sales and marketing. The resort is not only close to the University of Virginia, but also to the homes of three United States Presidents— Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe. “Explore Virginia wineries on the Monticello Trail or the new craft breweries in the region,” Walker said. The resort offers “one-of-a-kind rooms” and suites with patios overlooking a lake. Additionally, they have a spa that includes couples’ massages, private sports club facilities with both indoor and outdoor tennis, squash, a fitness center, golf and many other attractions. “For the millennials, Boar’s Head offers diversity, discovery and learning,” Walker said.

BERRY HILL RESORT – South Boston, Va. “We are a full service property, which means that honeymooners can come and park their cars for the weekend, and there’s no need to leave,” said Bill Kirkhuff, general manager. “You can come and spend the weekend enjoying yourself and taking it easy, without having to use your car all the time.” Guests are invited to enjoy two restaurants, a European spa with full spa treatments, and an indoor pool. For couples who enjoy being outdoors, there are hiking and biking trails. “We have lots of outdoor things to do,” Kirkhuff said. Nestled in a forest on 650 acres, Berry Hill Resort is also a historical property that history lovers will love to explore. The former plantation has been renovated many times, yet still maintains its Southern charm. Some of the buildings on the property date back to 1790. Although the estate has had various owners throughout the years, Benjamin Harrison, fourth Governor of Virginia and signer of the Declaration of Independence, was one of them. “We’re an independent hotel, so it’s not cookie cutter. It’s not like every other Marriott you’ve been in,” he said. “We have a good staff, and I’m told it’s just a very refreshing experience.” The Resort offers a romance package which includes deluxe queen accommodations, fruit, cheese and iced champagne in your room, three course dinner in the Mansion Dining Room and an after-dinner cordial in the Library Bar. “We’re a wonderful place to make memories,” Kirkhuff said. “We’re not huge like some of the other Virginia resorts where you just get lost in the crowd. There’s a lot of individual attention.”

WEDDING PHOTOS PHOTOGRAPHER:___________________________

Creating a “shot list” has little to do with adult beverages when it comes to your wedding. Arguably, one of the most important aspects of your big day is what will last after it is over—your vows, love, and hopefully, your photos! While more professional photographers understand what is essential to capture, here is a simple list to add to or subtract from. Give your personalized list to your photographer so he or she will know which moments you want to remember for a lifetime.

Fun, Unique and Memorable Wedding Moments Caught on Camera

SOMETIMES MARRIAGE IS SCARY

Moments after saying “I do,” editor Shelley Basinger and her husband John encountered a crowd of zombies during their photo shoot downtown! (Well, actually—the intimidating group of stiffs were a part of the 2014 Zombie Walk to raise money for local charities.) Instead of running for their lives, the wedding party embraced the moment and ended up with some photos they will never forget. Photo by Kim Jennings

WHAT A CATCH!

They really hit it off! All baseball puns aside, Gary and Krystal Harris felt most comfortable getting married on a baseball diamond because that’s a part of their love story. While they met years ago, they reconnected when Gary coached varsity softball at Jefferson Forest High School; Krystal was the JV coach. (And they are expecting a new member to join their team in July 2017!) Photo by Wolf Creek Photography

SIBLING SERENADE SURPRISE

Ashton Sosnowski and her siblings, Caitlin and Dane-Gordon, wanted to find a unique way to officially welcome Ashton’s husband Will into the family since he’s an only child. So, at their wedding reception, they put together this sibling initiation where they serenaded him with a song they all know by heart, Michael Bolton’s “When a Man Loves a Woman.” And Will had no idea it was coming!
