VALLEY FORGE PARK ALLIANCE

ANNUAL REPORT 2020

A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

PAGE 02

A NEW YEAR A NEW HOME The year 2020 was a time of changes. The Valley Forge Park Alliance, like so many of you, made plans for 2020 that fell by the wayside. Our first big fundraiser, more community outreach than ever, volunteers armed with park information and raring to go — all sidelined by COVID-19. But even though 2020 wasn’t what we planned, it turned into a year for the VFPA to build behind the scenes. We strengthened our board and committees, adding new board members who are leaders in their fields and expanding committee leadership beyond board members. We now have a greater depth in the leadership of the VFPA. We learned how to thrive via Zoom, adapting our Lunch and Learns and our speaker series. Through these programs, we engaged with audiences around the country in a way we couldn’t before. Most excitingly, we continue to work with the park on plans to make the Maurice Stephens House a new home for the Alliance, which would allow us to extend our reach and accomplish more than we ever have.

We’ll have a presence right in the beautiful heart of the park. We’ll be able to talk to visitors every day. We’ll be able to host more programs for all ages and on all topics. And more than that, we’ll have transformed a vacant, decaying historic structure into a living breathing place where people can gather and celebrate the beauty and greatness of Valley Forge. We were able to do all of this because of YOU, our donors, members, partners, and friends. Thank you for continuing to support the VFPA as we strive to preserve the history and conserve the resources of Valley Forge National Historical Park. We hope to see you at our new home very soon.

Molly Duffy Executive Director

A LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

DETERMINED TO PERSEVERE In December 1777, General Washington marched his battered, disorganized, and weary soldiers into Valley Forge to encamp for the winter. The Continental Army was coming off a season of disheartening losses. Brandywine, Paoli, Germantown…even Philadelphia, the capital of the colonies, had been captured by the British. This winter would bring many challenges for the struggling army. Provisions for cold, hungry soldiers were in short supply. Disease threatened to render the army as a whole unfit for service. A training program was desperately needed to prevent the confusion that had hamstrung the army in their previous engagements. During this winter of hardship, disease, and death, George Washington and his troops reinvented themselves. Dangerous smallpox outbreaks were mitigated thanks to what historian (and VFPA Speakers Series guest) Elizabeth Fenn describes as “the first large-scale state sponsored immunization campaign in American history.” General Nathaniel Greene reimagined himself from battlefield general to army quartermaster, and in reorganizing the army’s supply chain made one of his most significant contributions to the war. And with the arrival of General von Steuben, the army worked as a cohesive force like never before.

Like iron being hammered upon the anvil, the Continental army held up to the stress and emerged stronger and sharper as a result. 2020 and 2021 continue to be a time of struggle, disease, and death. Valley Forge has become a place for many to come and seek solace, rebuild, and reinvent themselves just as the Continental Army did years ago. The Alliance is no different. Under the steadfast leadership of our Executive Director, Molly Duffy, we have taken our Speakers Series virtual, engaging with speakers from across the country with a wide-ranging expertise. We have continued our Trail Tuesday hikes, whose participants experience the beauty of Valley Forge while socially distant. Our Board of Directors completed Diversity and Inclusion training and, as I write, we are preparing programs and events for when COVID-19 allows us to be together again. We remain steadfast in our mission to support Valley Forge National Historical Park through programming, special projects, advocacy, and fundraising. When COVID allows, the Alliance will emerge stronger, and ready to support our mission, sharpened with renewed energy and vision. Thank you for your support of the Valley Forge Park Alliance: Your Oasis, Your History, Our Mission.

MAURICE STEPHENS HOUSE

MAURICE STEPHENS HOUSE A part of Valley Forge history will give the Park Alliance room to grow.

The Maurice Stephens House is located just across Route 23 from Washington Memorial Chapel, on the lands of Valley Forge National Historical Park’s Grand Parade. According to the incised date stone found in the upper portion of the building’s original east gable wall, the main portion of the house was constructed in 1816. Oral history recorded in 1850 in Henry Woodman’s The History of Valley Forge indicates that the property was the site of Brigadier General Jedediah Huntington’s quarters during the Valley Forge winter encampment. The Provincial tax record for the property indicates that in 1769 the property was occupied by one Zachariah Davis, and it was likely Davis’ log house which Woodman states served as General Huntington’s quarters. Woodman goes on to state that there were a number of huts erected on the property as well, one of which was occupied by General von Steuben, who would drill soldiers on what would become the Stephens property.

Maurice Stephens is first listed in the Provincial tax record for the property in the year 1779, but it is not known exactly when he moved in. After building the stone house that is the heart of the structure we see today in 1816, he sold the property in 1825, two years before his death. It passed through the hands of four other owners before becoming part of Valley Forge State Park in 1919. Initially it continued to be utilized as a farm, the barn home to a flock of 115 sheep that helped keep the grass down in the park. Over the years it served as ranger dormitories, park offices, and even a nature center, but the house had been vacant since the mid-1990s.

MAURICE STEPHENS HOUSE A part of Valley Forge history will give the Park Alliance room to grow.

The Stephens House is one of many (and one of the most prominent) historic structures that the park aims to lease through its adaptive reuse program. Through this program, the park puts historic structures back into use while realizing rental income that it can then use to rehabilitate other structures. Because of the Stephens House’s prominent location in the park, park leadership saw it as the ideal home for the Alliance. The beautiful building contains ample space to house the Alliance’s offices and is well suited to serve as a hub of park activities that would draw attention to the Alliance and its efforts to assist the park. Through new programs, events, and possibly a small cafe/shop at the building, the Alliance would also be able to create new sources of earned income, achieving one of the main goals of our strategic plan.

The Alliance convened the Maurice Stephens Advisory Group this past fall. The group is comprised of community leaders with expertise in construction, fundraising, leasing, and the small businesses that could partner with the Alliance in this space so that it can once again welcome visitors. They are working hand in hand with the Alliance and park leaders to finalize the construction plans, agree on lease terms that satisfy both the park and the Alliance, plan the public use of the space, and raise the funds required to make it all happen. “VFPA’s rehabilitation and operation of the Maurice Stephens house would serve as a shining example of the capacity of public-private partnerships to restore and breathe new life into historic structures,” said the park's business manager, Patrick Madden. We couldn’t agree more, and we look forward to welcoming you to our new home once we open the doors.

A YEAR OF CHANGE We started the year with big plans for 2020, but soon realized that would all have to change.

WINTER The VPFA had an amazing year planned for 2020, filled with outreach, programs, events, and fundraising for the park. But as winter gave way to spring, COVID-19 appeared on the horizon. For the safety of our guests, we began to cancel our events.

SPRING We began to adjust to our new normal. The VFPA received a Paycheck Protection Program loan for $17,500 toward payroll expenses. We also received a $5,000 Muster Roll grant from the Descendants of Washington's Army at Valley Forge to create a new website and database. Our wonderful Muster Roll volunteers and web design consultants worked tirelessly to create a new website. Once it was deemed safe, Trail Tuesday walks resumed.

SUMMER The VPFA took one of its most popular programs, the Lunch and Learn series, online with the help of Tredyffrin Public Library. It reached 329 viewers, and inspired by its success we began planning to take the Speaker Series online as well. We also partnered with Washington Memorial Heritage to celebrate 100th birthday of women’s suffrage and the Justice Bell.

A YEAR OF OPPORTUNITY As summer turned to autumn, the VFPA had really hit our stride.

MAURICE STEPHENS HOUSE The Maurice Stephens House Advisory Group, comprised of elected officials and business and community leaders, meets for the first time outside the house. We couldn't help but notice the symbolism when a rainbow appeared at the end of a stormy day.

VIRTUAL EVENTS The new film for the Park theater, Determined to Persevere, had been slated to premiere this fall. We weren't going to let the opportunity pass us by, so we held a virtual premiere featuring the film's director and producer on October 29. We also kicked off our Virtual Speaker Series in October and held our first ever photo contest, which received over 400 entries - more than we could have ever hoped for.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION Our board worked with a diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant to create a mission statement and goals for 2021. We hope that VFPA can broaden its outreach and attract board members who better represent all park users.

INCOME In October, we received a $5,000 grant from PECO for our Guide by Cell program. This enabled the VFPA to provide this free service to all park visitors, so that they can tour the park on their own in English and Spanish. We also received a $25,000 National Park Foundation grant for capital campaign work for the Maurice Stephens house. Trying something new, we held our first Instagram auction, raising $3,000.
