MORODOCK CERAMICS

KHMER HERITAGE TABLEWARE DESIGN CLASSES

OUR STORY

មរតក

here at Morodock Ceramics ( 'heritage or inheritance' in Khmer ) is echoed in 900 year old carvings on the Bayon temple. Potters are seen busy at work, preparing and shaping the local clays, just as you can see today at our workshop. Indeed our own family story may go even further back in Kompung Chnnang pottery district. Below is grandmother Yay Moun, still producing and firing her pottery kiln at 85 . Today the more advanced technology from the Khmer Empire, is now being revived by this same family of potters, reproduced by hand, and inspiring the design and creation of elegant contemporary tableware for the home and catering industry. យមួន Yay Moun

TRADITION RENEWED Although with Indian and Chinese influences, Angkor era ceramics have their own shapes and decoration. The Khmer Empire produced three main kinds of ceramics: for architecture decoration (roof tiles, decorative finial motifs, and etc.); for religious ceremonies: vases and statues; and many vessels used in daily life .

HERITAGE RANGE We design and produce a Heritage range using glaze research and decoration. You will find vases of all sizes, boxes, bowls, bottles, as well as sculpture for the table, oven and bath room. Both beautiful and durable, all are very suited to contemporary living.

KHMER HERITAGE

មរតក

ANGKORIAN DECORATION inspires us, whether inscribed in white clay on our monumental vases or carved into miniature bottles. We have a rich catalogue of motifs from history and we also create new ones, depending on our collectors tastes and requirements. Just like the 12th century artisans did, we also model by hand onto our ceramics, ornamental figures such as elephants, rabbits , owls, birds and sometimes the human figure. As our heritage range grows we will continue to develop new designs, and always with respect to our craft history.

STUDIO COLLECTION Rare amongst pottery from the Angkor period are those glazed solely with wood ash. Our founder, Seyhak Son finds time in his busy schedule for creative play with different vase forms. These pots are truly one of a kind, as the ash glaze runs unpredictably in the fire into many rivulets, and highlight the spontaneous scraffito decoration. No two colours are the same as the wood ash, temperature and clay body colour also interact and change.

In the hands of a master potter, craft becomes art. And then there are the gifts of fire Look out for some of these special ones on your visit to our workshop or contact us for our most recent portfolio.

TIME FOR TEA As old as time itself, drinking tea to relax, stimulate, contemplate or to heal is enjoyed all the world over. To release the essence of the chosen plant , each culture has developed a connection with the vessels used and they come in a wide array of forms . The teapot, simple or decorated, presents a unique challenge to the potter, aside from safety and comfort in use.

The balance of the parts ‐ the body, handle, lid and spout, give each pot its unique form and character . We are pleased to offer a wide selection of teapots and accompanying cups, bowls and trays .

TABLE SCULPTURES Every visitor to the region will be very aware of the astounding variety of sculpture in historical sites, public areas and pagodas. Also in evidence will be recent works of art in stone, bronze, concrete, wood and composite materials in hotels and restaurants. Subjects range from the representations of Hindu and Buddhist figures, historical Khmer rulers and stories from sacred scripture and folk legends.

Sculptural Pottery such as the magnificent Khmer Empire elephant vases complete with human riders is reproduced here in various sizes and can also last the 1000 years of the museum originals. Also in stock is a wide range of the sculptures of The Buddha in various poses and a number of Khmer ruler portraits in different finishes.

Versatile, dynamic forms of contemporary design, hand thrown on the wheel with simple lines, moulded geometric shapes, and hand built slabwork are also a part of our repetoire. We work with designers and artists and have developed a range of table and sculptural ware suited to the modern interior . The contrasts of warm clays with organic shapes and earthy glazes on simple forms

DESIGN gracefully combine especially where the subtle range of white glazes break to clay tones on edges and articulate the lines of the vessels. Colour is now added to our range for more visual impact where required. Time does not stand still as new forms and traditions are born. We are available to consult , design and plan for the realization of your ideas.
