Paul D. Koonce Paul D. Koonce is executive vice president of Dominion Energy and president and chief executive officer of the Power Generation Group. He oversees more than 27,000 megawatts of regulated and merchant generation operations. Koonce, who has more than 35 years of experience in the energy marketplace, was chief executive officer of the company’s Dominion Energy Infrastructure Group Paul D. Koonce and president–Dominion Virginia Power. Previously, he held management positions as CEO– Dominion Virginia Power and CEO–Dominion Energy, with responsibilities including capital allocation, customer care management and commodity optimization. He assumed his current post in January 2016. He is a member of the board of visitors of Virginia State University; the board of trustees of the Jamestown–Yorktown Foundation (and the 2019 Commemoration); the boards of directors of Nuclear Electric Insurance Ltd., the Nuclear Energy Institute and executive committee, and the Virginia Business Higher Education Council; and the board of managers of NextUp, supporting middle school readiness. He is past chairman of the Interstate Natural Gas Association and the Southern Gas Association. Koonce is a 1982 graduate of the University of TennesseeKnoxville, with a bachelor’s degree in business. 6

Bonnie and Ronald L. Smith Bonnie and Ron Smith established the MGW Communications Endowed Scholarship at Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) in 1999. With additional contributions and investment earnings over the years, it has grown into one of the most significant scholarship funds at BRCC. In addition, Bonnie and Ron have been personally generous to the BRCC Educational Foundation, with Bonnie and investments in the Blue Ridge Annual Ronald L. Smith Fund, Dr. James R. Perkins Fund for Academic Excellence, workforce and economic development initiatives, and special events including the “BRCC Spells Success” Corporate Challenge Spelling Bee and Spring Fling Auction. Ron served on the BRCC Educational Foundation Board of Directors from 2004 until 2010, and in 2011 was named a Director Emeritus in recognition of his outstanding contributions of time, talent, and treasure. Wells Fargo BankLynchburg Region For almost 30 years, the Lynchburg Region of Wells Fargo Bank has been an invaluable partner for Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) in our ongoing efforts to keep instructional equipment up-to-date with the rapidly changing technologies and Josh Melvin, Nate Joseph, Eve Noel, Melanie Oliver, Luke Towles expanded capabilities in the workplace. Regional Wells Fargo leaders Luke Towles and Eve Noel have made sure that Wells Fargo Foundation generously supported recent CVCC campaigns for new precision machining equipment, digital radiography machines for our radiologic technology trainees, a human simulation model for our Respiratory Therapy students, and anatomy & physiology lab equipment for our students pursuing healthcare careers. We greatly appreciate the long-term workforce-focused partnership between Wells Fargo and CVCC that has helped the college prepare students for in-demand positions at area employers. – DR. Temple Baptist Church and Ovella Worsham Estate Dabney S. Lancaster Community College (DSLCC) is humbled to have been chosen by Temple Baptist Church as a steward of the Ovella Worsham Educators’ Scholarship, funded by the Ovella Worsham Estate. Ms. Worsham was a lifelong educator in the Alleghany Highlands, educating generations of area residents and helping them to foster a love of and appreciation for the arts. As a sizeable scholarship fund, it is (Back) The Reverend Bill Hartsfield, Fred able to significantly impact several Humphreys students each year who are planning (Front) John Stone, to pursue a career in education. In Laramie McCallister addition, it is our great pleasure to honor the outstanding leadership of Temple Baptist Church, several of whom are long-standing supporters of DSLCC, such as John Stone, DSLCC alumnus and Educational Foundation Board Treasurer, and The Reverend Bill Hartsfield, DSLCC advocate and Local Board member. The generosity of Ms. Worsham and Temple Baptist Church is not only impacting our students’ lives, but also paving the way as a leader in planned giving. DSLCC is indebted to them for this most gracious gift and is thankful to have such staunch supporters in our community.

Anita J. Wyatt Ms. Anita Wyatt has a long history with Danville Community College (DCC) having graduated from both Danville Technical Institute (DTI) and Danville Community College (DCC) before being employed at the college for 25 years. Her philanthropic support began with the establishment of two endowed scholarships and has continued by providing funding for high school career coaches and with the naming of the conference room adjacent to the Office of Institutional Advancement.

Virginia Space and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport Eastern Shore Community College (ESCC) is very pleased to have the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) as a key workforce development partner on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Their commitment to and financial support of the Summer Internship Program has translated into a major success for both ESCC and MARS. The placement of student interns who Dale Nash transition into full-time employment with MARS is double the national average (72% vs 35%). Staff at MARS are also assisting ESCC with the development of curriculum for the new Technical Studies degree program in which workplace experiences for students are integral to program completion. Additionally, MARS staff have helped ESCC promote STEM-related activities and careers to students on the Eastern Shore. The Lipman Foundation When Eric Lipman fled his native Germany, he did so to escape the Nazi Holocaust. In America he served in the U.S. Army, and with his bride Jeanette he would build a successful career as an international businessman, settling in Richmond and becoming an active community leader. The Lipman Foundation has powered many important initiatives The late Jeanette at Reynolds Community College, Lipman including generous endowments to support scholarships, the Middle College, and, most recently, helping the college extend workforce training into Richmond’s East End. Reynolds also is indebted to Mike Gracik, a trusted partner in these efforts. We lost Mrs. Jeanette Lipman in 2017 at 102 years old, but ageless in her grace and generosity. – DR. Kathy and Nick Nerangis Kathy and Nick Nerangis have helped make Winchester, Virginia, a wonderful place to live, learn, heal, and play. Our community admires their hard work and entrepreneurial success. We are inspired by their acts of kindness and generosity. Kathy served with great enthusiasm and dedication on both the College Board and the Educational Foundation. Since 1993, they have financially supported many projects and campaigns. Last year, Kathy and Nick Nerangis they endowed a scholarship to support single parents. They believe in the power of education. Their gifts to LFCC have changed lives. – DR. Donna Stanley Donna Stanley dedicated nearly 24 years of her life to Mountain Empire Community College (MECC) and its students. Donna successfully led the MECC Foundation to hold the largest endowment in the Virginia Community College System, despite serving a region with a relatively low population and limited resources. She built strong, meaningful relationships with local businesses and associations, individuals, community leaders and Donna Stanley other foundations to share the needs of the college, its students, and the community MECC serves. Kathy and Eddie Hale Kathy and Eddie Hale have made significant contributions to New River Community College (NRCC) since the mid-eighties. They established the Martin’s Pharmacy Scholarship and were instrumental in funding the Bill Hale Memorial Scholarship as well as their most recent scholarship in honor of Dr. Charlie White, among others. They have also provided support for Great Expectations, Student Success, and other college needs. Eddie has Kathy and Eddie Hale served on the NRCC’s Foundation board for two different terms. In addition to that role, he is especially proud of being a graduate of NRCC. And we at NRCC are very proud to know Kathy and Eddie as our friends. – DR. Northrop Grumman The Northrop Grumman Corporation is a leading global security company that believes in investing for the long term. The respected firm has been a generous partner with Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) in funding the training of educators to teach cybersecurity and networking to dual enrolled high school students. This commitment will provide a sustainable flow of credentialed students to help meet the growing needs of regional technology employers. The firm and its employees have also stepped forward to support NVCC’s Pathway to the Baccalaureate program. This national-award-winning initiative supports and guides students with no family history of college-going to attain four-year degrees. – DR. The Martinsville Speedway and the Campbell Family Martinsville Speedway has been an iconic NASCAR fixture in Martinsville and Henry County since its inception in 1947. The Motorsports program at Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) has benefited tremendously Clay Campbell over the years from its association with the Speedway and now with the establishment of the Dale Earnhardt Jr. Scholarship program, the doors of opportunity are wide open for students interested in pursuing a career in motorsports engineering. Combined with PHCC’s major expansion of the motorsports program in the new Manufacturing, Engineering and Technology (MET) Complex, the generosity of the Martinsville Speedway and the Campbell family ensures that the legacy of racing will continue to thrive in Martinsville and Henry County and at Patrick Henry Community College. – DR. June Fleming For nearly 20 years, Mrs. June Fleming has demonstrated her dedication to Paul D. Camp Community College (PDCCC) and her commitment to education. She has been an active member of the PDCCC Foundation Board from 20002007, serving as its vice president and president. This public service contributed to the reason she was selected to receive the J. Paul Council Jr. Community Service Award in 2009 June Fleming at the college’s graduation. In addition, she has served on the PDCCC Local College Board since 2012, where she currently remains. She has also held the position as its chair since 2016. Mrs. Fleming took on the responsibility of the Local College Board liaison from 2013-17 as well. She has supported numerous opportunities leading to students’ success and has an innate desire to help others. We are so grateful to have someone as engaged in the college as Mrs. Fleming. Northern Neck Electric Cooperative Northern Neck Electric Cooperative (NNEC) has served the Northern Neck of Virginia with safe and reliable electricity since 1938. It also participates in community activities and economic development to enhance the quality of life in our rural region Greg White and Russell Brown along the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. To that end, NNEC established a perpetual endowed scholarship at Rappahannock Community College (RCC) that will allow hundreds of future students to attend the College at an affordable cost. The Cooperative is a vital part of the economic and social fabric of the Northern Neck, providing power, jobs, and community support to our region for 80 years. Working with NNEC to ensure an affordable higher education for area students is a natural partnership. The Laughing Gull Foundation Laughing Gull Foundation (LGF) is a progressive family foundation proud of its’ commitment to justice. As a steadfast advocate of higher education in prison, the Southside Virginia Community College’s Campus Within Walls (CWW) program appealed to the Foundation. Targeting higher education in prisons, LGF aimed to increase access to credit-bearing college courses for incarcerated individuals. Beginning in 2015, LGF awarded scholarships to incarcerated men at the Lunenburg Correctional Center who were involved in the CWW program. Recently, the group awarded additional funding to hire a coordinator to keep the program operational. The college is grateful for this effort to enhance and sustain this innovative program. With a mission to honor the world’s population through addressing broken systems that have created inequality, LGF sustains this ongoing program to educate and change the lives of this population of students. Charles R. King Dr. Charles R. King exemplifies the spirit of the community college: inclusive, enthusiastic, visionary, with a commitment to serving the community and building strong partnerships. He steered Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) through the first 40 years of its operation, working hard to establish SWCC as the first choice in higher education for the people of its region. It is with a sense of honor that SWCC selected Dr. King, its first and founding president, as this year’s nominee.

The world of manufacturing is drastically changing and the need of manufacturing companies for skilled workers is a greater challenge than ever before. Continental Automotive Systems, Inc. responded to this challenge by partnering with Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) to help train future machinists inside Paul Stewart, George Koch, Mike its Newport News facility Lindsey, Sandy Stojkovski, Alberto to supply the Virginia Peninsula’s growing Marinai, Fernando Viturtia Caurcel, demand for skilled workers. Kregg Wiggins, Cynthia Tafolla The Newport News plant, part of the engine systems unit of Continental’s powertrain division, is known for producing fuel injectors and other parts as a supplier to car manufacturers. Dedicating approximately 3,800 square feet of renovated space, equipment, and the assistance of company subject matter experts to mentor students, Continental’s commitment is valued at nearly a half million dollars. The program is available to students from any company and is a regional asset to address the machinists shortage on the Peninsula. Mounting an equipment-intensive program like machining would likely be out of the question without a strong partner willing to make a major investment. Continental’s investment is not only for its own benefit, but also for the benefit of the region’s entire manufacturing industry. – DR. JOHN DEVER, PRESIDENT, THOMAS NELSON COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Elizabeth River Crossings, LLC The Landmark Foundation In 2017, Tidewater Community College (TCC) launched its innovative TCC Women’s Center STEM Promise Program, and we are pleased to honor two early investors, Elizabeth River Crossings, LLC, and the Landmark Foundation. The goal of the program is to increase the number of women and minority students receiving STEM degrees at TCC. Both ERC and the Landmark Foundation saw the future value of a more diverse technology workforce – ERC in the area of engineering and construction and Landmark in meeting the IT needs of Dominion Enterprises, a Norfolk-based multifaceted media company. In addition, the Landmark Foundation, under the leadership of Frank Batten, is supporting dual enrollment scholarships for students in Great Expectations, helping them earn college credits in high school and make the transition to higher education. Friendship Health Edwin Feinour and Joseph Hoff provides numerous clinical opportunities and scholarships for our students. In addition, they hire many of our graduates on a yearly basis. The philanthropic support of Friendship Health and the Friendship Foundation at VWCC literally changes the lives – every day – of those that will one day save lives in our community. Charles G. Crockett Charles Crockett is a remarkable individual. In dealing with two very difficult situations in his life, he has had the fortitude and compassion to turn tragic circumstances into something meaningful. Following the sudden, unexpected death of one of his daughters, he established the “Angela Denise Crockett Memorial Scholarship Endowment” to benefit Wytheville Charles G. Crockett Community College (WCC) students who were enrolled in the Nursing Program. Several years later, following the loss of his beloved wife to Parkinson’s disease, Charles established the “Betty Jean Hammack Crockett Memorial Scholarship Endowment.” This endowment provides financial assistance to WCC students who plan to become teachers. Both of these scholarships will benefit generations of students to come. I have great respect for Charles and his commitment to helping others. – DR. DEAN E. Dottie and Al Whitt Dottie and Al Whitt have been champions of our community colleges since the late 1980s. Moreover, they have been philanthropic leaders – in their quiet and humble manner – throughout the Harrisonburg, Winchester, and Dottie and Al Whitt Richmond communities where they have lived. Dottie has the distinction of serving as Chair of the Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) Foundation Board and founding member of the The Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE).
