September’s coming up, and with it will be more North Atlantic cyclones. September is the most active month of the Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to Nov. 30. Oh, and in the latest season forecast update — Aug. 4 — the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned 2021 is still tracking to be a busy season. “NOAA scientists predict that the likelihood of an above-normal 2021 Atlantic hurricane season is 65%,” the agency said in a press release. It later adds, “Atlantic sea surface temperatures are not expected to be as warm as they were during the record-breaking 2020 season; however, reduced vertical wind shear and an enhanced west Africa monsoon all contribute to the current conditions that can increase seasonal hurricane activity.” Florida’s got bad history with September storms.
Labor Day Hurricane Sept. 2, 1935, is one of the saddest days on the Veterans history calendar. The Florida Emergency Relief Administration — which is now the Florida Division of Emergency Management — reported that the strongest recorded hurricane to make landfall in U.S. history killed 423 in the Florida Keys on that day. The storm’s remembered as the Labor Day Hurricane. Most, 259, were Veterans. The Veterans’ Affairs Administration — which is now the Department of Veteran Affairs — came up with a count of 256. It listed 121 as dead with positive identification, 45 dead with pending identification, and 90 missing and presumed dead. The reason so many Veterans lost their lives is because the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration created 25,000 positions in New Deal programs specifically for Great War Veterans. That was to quell Veterans’ discontent with being

made to wait until 1945 for owed back pay from the war. Records show that about 700 Veterans doing New Deal infrastructure projects were in the Keys at work camps #1, #3 and #5 in August of 1935 shortly before the Labor Day Hurricane. When the hurricane formed and inched northward, early calls to evacuate them were dismissed by upper managers. As the storm barreled closer to the Keys, late efforts were made to mobilize a train from Miami to head down to Lower Matacombe Key. At 2 p.m. on Labor Day, Fred Ghent, the assistant administrator of the camps, called for the train. It left Miami about 4:30 p.m. As the train started on the bridge between the mainland and Keys, the storm was throwing water across the tracks. Then the train encountered a cable that had blown
over the rails. It took workers almost an hour and a half to clear the track. The train reached Islamorada at 8:15 p.m. It stopped to pick up camp administrators who were in much safer locations than the Veterans in the flimsy camps mere meters from the ocean. Minutes later, the full force of the storm was upon the Florida Keys. The winds knocked passenger cars from the tracks. Now there would be no train, no rescue for the Veterans nor anyone else. When the storm subsided, rescue efforts began. One of the volunteer rescuers was Key West resident Ernest Hemingway. Typical of men of his time, he had little sympathy for hurricane victims in general. He carved out an exception for the Veterans. “But the Veterans had been sent there; they had no op-
portunity to leave, nor any protection against hurricanes; and they never had a chance for their lives,” he later wrote. “Who sent nearly a thousand war Veterans, many of them husky, hard-working and simply out of luck, but many of them close to the border of pathological cases, to live in frame shacks on the Florida Keys in hurricane months?” The American Legion dubbed the tragedy the “Murder at Matacombe.” It put blame for the Veterans’ deaths squarely on the shoulders of indifferent managers. The Veterans’ deaths were arguably the final call to conscience for a nation that had long resisted giving the Great War Veterans the compensation and help they deserved. Tug it up, tug it back
DeLand group aims to bring the boat back home

Back during World War II, the American Machinery Corporation was building Army tugboats on Lake Beresford near DeLand. The evidence is pretty much all gone, unless someone’s got sharp eyes, property owners’ permission to tromp on their land, and time to do a bunch of history research. Local historian and preservationist Dan Friend came across the story about the Army tugboats getting built near his home by a quirk. It fired his interest, so he tracked down some of their war-service stories and published them at www. usarmysttugs.com. Still, that’s not evidence for the passerby that Lake Beresford is a World War II history site. But, in the course of his research, Friend found out one of those DeLand World War II tugs is docked in Sweden. He got in touch with the European owners. Turned out, they’re willing to donate the boat back to the community that built it to be a memorial of Volusia’s contributions to the war effort. “It’s rarer than the last unicorn,” Friend said. The tugboat, ST 479, now named Tiger, was almost definitely part of Operation Overlord, according to Friend’s research. The owners, John and Margareta Higgins, claim the tugboat propelled their romance, so eight decades on the boat’s still completing important missions. So, the DeLand Historic Trust — which Friend is president of — found a surviving World War II Lake Beresford Army tugboat, the owners are willing to donate it to the community that built it, and Volusia County has a park with some space for it about three miles down the St. Johns River from Lake Beresford. Done deal. Of course, it couldn’t possibly be simple as that. “I’ve started a fundraiser with a $300,000 goal,” said Friend. More about that fundraiser in a bit.
Sept. 2, 1945 On Sept. 2, 1945, a Japanese delegation boarded the USS Missouri to officially surrender to the United States and Allied nations. That marked the end of World War II, which lasted six years and a day if one counts Germany’s invasion of Poland on Sept. 1, 1939, as the start of the war. Not all historians do. Some historians hold that World War II started with the Mukden Incident. On Sept. 18, 1931, Japanese soldiers on a covert, false-flat operation detonated explosives near the South Manchuria Railway in modern-day Shenyang. The rail was Japanese-owned. The Japanese

blamed the Chinese for attacking their rail and used that as cause to invade and occupy the northeast side of China, called Manchuria. Japan set up the puppet state of Manchukuo to legitimize its continued occupation. The Chinese saw it as a violation of their national sovereignty, but were in no position to challenge the Japanese. China, like Czechoslovakia later, had no industrialized allies willing to challenge an aggressor nation engaging in expansionism and resource plundering. The Japanese escalated to an all-out invasion and occupation of China in 1937. That was arguably the first time Japan challenged the United States to war. On Dec. 12, 1937, Japanese warplanes attacked and sank the USS Panay, an American gunboat on the Yangtze River engaged in embassy evacuations. Although there was documentary film of the attack, the President Franklin D. Roosevelt administration asked Universal News to edit what the American public saw. Amazingly, Universal News complied with the request and sanitized the news reel. The Roosevelt administrations’ effort to stay out of war ended on Dec. 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked U.S. military installations in Hawaii. Most famously the battleships docked in Pearl Harbor. The U.S. declared war on the Japanese Empire on Dec. 8, 1941. Because Japan
was in the 1936 Anti-Comintern Pact with Germany and Italy, those two nations declared war on the U.S. on Dec. 11, 1941. America was now all in on World War II.
Florida goes to war Florida quickly became a critical part of America’s war effort. The state had a military buildup that arguably rivaled the Second Seminole War and exceeded the Spanish-American War. For example, most airports of any size in Florida were either created for, or given to and expanded by, the military. For example, there was Naval Air Station Sanford that’s now the Orlando-Sanford International Airport. The Daytona Beach International Airport used to be the Naval Air Station Daytona Beach, which had Naval Outlying fields in Spruce Creek, New Smyrna Beach, Ormond Beach and Bunnell. Volusia County also boasts having had the Naval Air Station DeLand, which is now the DeLand Municipal Airport. Another example is the former Naval Air Station Melbourne. The Navy used the former Eau Gallie-Melbourne Municipal Airport to train carrier-based pilots in gunnery techniques. Today the place is

‘Carlson’s Raiders’ make wartime, movie history On Aug. 26, 1942, Marine raider, injured during in Lt. Col. Evans F. The Argonaut was a submarine of the United States Navy which served primarily in the South Pacific. The sub was hit by a torpedo and sunk on January 10th,

On dark night on this Aug. 19, 1942,, U.S. Marines set off secretly from submarines to assault a remote island base. They were led by a controversial commander with radical new ideas. And the son of the sitting U.S. president was one of his officers. The Makin raid in 1942 might seem to have the far-fetched plot of an action movie — and in fact, one year later it would become one. But it was deadly real for both the American and Japanese troops involved. What was probably the first combat operation ever undertaken by a U.S. military special forces unit nearly ended in complete disaster.
‘Unconventional warfare’ At the outbreak of World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt requested that the Marines form an “unconventional warfare” unit to conduct raids behind enemy lines modeled after British commandos. U.S. Marine Corps brass weren’t keen on the idea, but they did form two battalions of “Raiders”— and appointed a black sheep of the USMC to lead one of them. Lt. Col. Evans Carlson had been wounded in action as an Army captain in World War I, decorated with the Navy Cross for defeating bandits in Nicaragua as a Marine lieutenant, befriended President Roosevelt while commanding his guard detachment in Georgia, and then accompanied and observed Communist insurgents fighting the Japanese in China. There, Carlson met key leaders such as Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping and developed an appreciation for the tactics, team spirit and zeal of the Communist guerilla units. Upon returning to the United States, Carlson resigned his commission to advocate against Japanese expansionism, before re-enlisting shortly before the U.S. entry into World War II.
Warrior ethic Carlson sought to instill in his Raiders the team spirit that he had observed in China, a quality he called gung ho, based on the Mandarin Chinese words “gong” (work) and ho (and/together). Ironically, the words were not an actual Chinese term, but would soon become widely used in English. The Marine leader believed in giving more initiative to subordinates and breaking down the barriers between

officers and enlisted men, which did little to endear him to his superiors. The Pacific War began with six months of defeats for U.S. forces until the decisive turning point in the naval battle of Midway. In August 1942, the U.S. Navy and Marines were ready to go on the offensive with an amphibious landing on the island of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. However, Pacific Commander-in-Chief Adm. Chester Nimitz also conceived of a commando raid to divert Japanese forces and gather intelligence. He ultimately dispatched A and B companies of Carlson’s Raiders to launch a hit-and-run raid on a Japanese seaplane base on Makin Island, allotting them a month of preparatory training time. Makin, now known as Butaritari, is a tiny triangular-shaped atoll at the northern tip of the Gilbert Islands, located just north of the equator between Hawaii and Papua New Guinea. Seventy-five Japanese personnel, including a platoon of around 47 Special Naval Landing Force Marines, maintained a refueling base in the atoll’s lagoon, surrounded by an 8-mile long road. The Allies had only sketchy photographic intelligence on the actual Japanese forces present, and estimated there could be as many as 300 troops on Makin and a shore battery overlooking the lagoon.

“At 07:00, with Company A leading, the Raiders advanced from the beach across the island to its north shore before attacking southwestward. Strong resistance from Japanese snipers and machine guns stalled the advance and inflicted casualties. The Japanese then launched two banzai charges that were wiped out by the Raiders, thus killing most of the Japanese on the island. At 09:00, Lt. Peatross and his 12 men found themselves behind the Japanese who were fighting the rest of the Raiders to the east. Peatross’s unit killed eight Japanese and the garrison commander Sgt. Major Kanemitsu, knocked out a machine gun and destroyed the enemy radios; but suffered three dead and two wounded. Failing to contact Carlson, they withdrew to the subs at dusk as planned. “At 13:30, 12 Japanese planes — including two flying boats —arrived over Makin. The flying boats — carrying reinforcements for the Japanese garrison —attempted to land in the lagoon, but were met with machine gun, rifle and Boys anti-tank rifle fire from the Raiders. One plane crashed; the other burst into flames. The remaining planes bombed and strafed but inflicted no U.S. casualties.” The raid was small, but it was an enormous boost for American morale. So much so, that a popular movie, “Gung ho!” was filmed starring Randolph Scott.

In Martin County there was the Naval Auxiliary Air Station Whitham, Stuart. The NAAS Whitham is, of course, Witham Field Airport at 1871 S.E. Airport Road in Stuart.
17, 1942 — four German Nazi infiltrators boated onto Ponte Vedra’s shores from U-584, buried a bunch of stuff in the sand, and started their part in Operation Patorius, an attempt to recruit homegrown terrorists to disrupt American manufacturing. Infiltrator George Dasch joined the operation, apparently with the intention of thwarting it. He reported the Nazi infiltrators’ whereabouts to the FBI. All were caught. All but Dasch and Ernst Burger, who agreed to a plot with Dasch to inform the American government of the Nazi infiltrators, were executed.

While the military buildup was happening in Florida, the war came to our shores in 1942. Germany sent U-boats to U.S. waters in Operation Drumbeat, a U-boat war on American naval assets and shipping along the Atlantic coast. Florida waters were especially favorable to the U-boats, because much, if not most, of the world’s oil supply at the time was coming out of the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding region. German U-boats sank at least 40 sizable ships off Florida’s 8,400 miles of coastline, along with an uncounted number of smaller vessels. At least 10 of the notable U-boat attacks were along Veteran Voice’s coverage area, Martin north to Volusia counties. But, the sinking of the SS Gulfamerica near Jacksonville was almost certainly the most witnessed, and famous, of them all. The Gulfamerica was a new ship on her maiden voyage from Port Arthur, Texas, to New York City carrying 90,000 barrels of furnace oil. The 48-member crew was going it without military escort for the 445-foot ship. Around 10 p.m. on April 10, 1942, the Gulfamerica was nearing Jacksonville Beach. U-123 attacked and sank it in front of hundreds of folks gathered near and on the Jacksonville Beach shoreline enjoying a Florida spring night. Just a couple of months later — June
Part of the military buildup in Florida — and the U.S. — was industry. While World War II wasn’t the first industry versus industry war, it is the most significant example of that in history. Victory and defeat in World War II revolved around who could produce, move and crew tanks, planes, ships and other machines of war the fastest. That’s where the American Machinery Corporation came in. Friend said the company had a shipyard in Jacksonville. To accommodate the military’s orders, the company needed more space. So, it opened the facility on the eastern shore of Lake Beresford. The tugboats were built in Volusia then towed downriver — the St. Johns flows north — to Jacksonville for their engines. “They were built for the U.S. Army,” Friend said. “All steel. We built 29 of them.” The tugs weren’t open ocean vessels. “They were brought to Europe for the most part on the backs of Liberty Ships,” said Friend. On June 6, 1944, some of those tugboats crossed the English Channel to help construct portable docks, “mulberries,” while under Nazi fire. Friend said there’s reason to believe ST 479 needed the wheelhouse rebuilt at some point. It might have been due to damage during
the D-day operations. In a quirky turn of events, repair crews might have used a surprising source of metal for the rebuild. “I want to verify it once we get (the tugboat back in Florida) — that it is German tank armor,” said Friend.
Bringing the tug home Ah, yes, the getting the tugboat back to Florida. While the Higgins are willing to donate the Tiger, it’d have to get across the Atlantic. Friend’s done some pricing and figured out that if everything goes well, that’s leaving the DeLand Historic Trust with about $300,000 to come up with to make it happen. The ship is 140 tons, 86 feet long, 23 feet wide and 30 feet tall. The DeLand Historic Trust is running a trail fundraiser on Facebook. “What I’ve done is started a fundraiser with a fuse, ending not later than Oct. 15,” said Friend. That’s to gauge public enthusiasm. If the trial fundraiser convinces the board of directors $300,000 is out of reach — “We will refund donations,” explained Friend. More specifically, the DeLand Historic Trust will refund donations of $100 or more on request. Any unrefunded money from the fundraiser will go to other projects, such as the military room at the DeLand Memorial Hospital Museum at 230 N. Stone St., DeLand. If the inaugural fundraiser is successful, Friend will leverage it as a show of public support to seek grants. The Facebook fundraiser’s name is “Dan’s fundraiser for DeLand Historic Trust, Inc.” Alternately, people can mail checks to DHT Inc., at 2232 Holly Drive, DeLand, FL, 32724. If the trust gets the tugboat across the Atlantic and up the St. Johns River, she will most likely be placed on pillars as a World War II memorial at Ed Stone Park, 2990 W. Move afoot to get Sept. 22 marked as National Veteran and Military Suicide Prevention Day Treasure Coast’s New Horizon hosts 11th annual Race for Recovery Sept. 25 COLUMN BY Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

Many governmental, social-service and mental-health agencies mark September as National Suicide Prevention Month. That includes the Department of Veteran Affairs. In 2020, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a proclamation declaring September as Florida Veteran Suicide Prevention Month, and will probably do so again for 2021. Many, too, will mark Sunday, Sept. 5, to Saturday, Sept. 11, as National Suicide Prevention Week. I came across a group, Team 22 Hardcore, that is pressing for agencies, organizations and individuals to add to the calendar Sept. 22 as National Veteran and Military Suicide Prevention Day. I like that idea.
National Veteran and Military Suicide Prevention Day Matthew Allen, an Army Veteran and founding member of Team 22 Hardcore, published a column about the proposal in Military Times last year. “September is National Suicide Prevention Month,” he wrote. “We want to establish this moment, Sept. 22, 2020, as the first annual Veteran and Military Suicide Prevention Day; and we’re asking all of you, military and Veteran alike, to join us in commemorating this day both now and in the future. Do something on this day to make a meaningful and impactful difference within our community.” Last year Team 22 Hardcore members and supporters got together on Sept. 22 to do 22 pushups. Well, to do 22 pushups 22 times in a row in two-minute sets for 484 pushups in 44 minutes. The team livestreamed the event on Facebook. The team’s also promoted the “22 pushup challenge,” people pledging to do 22 pushups a day for 22 days to raise awareness about
death by suicide among Veterans. The “22” comes from older VA reports saying 22 Veterans die of suicide daily. That’s obsolete information — partly due to changes in how the VA records information in the “National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report” — and Allen wrote that Team 22 Hardcore is aware of that. The “2020 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report” from the Veterans department states that in 2018 nearly 6,450 Veterans died by suicide. That’s about 17.5 a day. In addition to apparent successes in lowering the number of deaths by suicide among servicemembers and Veterans, the Department of Defense and VA changed some reporting to separate servicemembers in and Veterans of the National Guard and reserves who were never federally activated or called up for extended service. This was due to differences in services available to that group. However, like me, Team 22 Hardcore believes that the number, 22, has entered the public consciousness as a symbol many instantly recognize as broaching death by suicide among Veterans. Hence the proposal to get Sept. 22 annually marked as National Veteran and Military Suicide Prevention Day.
11th Annual Race for Recovery 5K Run/Walk The other day a friend to Veterans, Lisa Rymer, called me. She’s the chief development officer at New Horizons of the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee. Rymer wanted to remind me that the Treasure Coast mental-health organization’s annual Race for Recovery — which is scheduled to coincide with the National Suicide Prevention Month — is coming up. While New Horizons is a community-wide organization, it’s sometimes the first help Veterans in crisis meet on their worst days. New Hori-

One of the team members is a Veteran. “We are the only mobile response team on the Treasure Coast,’ Rymer said. “If they need a mobile dispatch, we are the one.” New Horizons asks about Veteran status and refers self-identifying Veterans to also seek VA services. “A lot of times Veterans choose not to identify,” Rymer said. There are likely a number of reasons for that. One could be that Veterans with discharges that bar them from most VA services being unaware there are now exceptions for some mental-health services. The Race for Recovery is an annual fundraiser, and goodness knows a lot of not-forprofit organizations are needing good turnouts for their fundraisers. New Horizons is the largest mental-health and substance-abuse agency in Veteran Voice’s southern coverage area. It helps about 15,000 a year. Since the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic, two-thirds of New Horizons’ clients have no regular income or insurance. New Horizons helps them anyhow. The Race for Recovery 5K Walk/Run will be on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 7 a.m. It’ll

Florida Veterans along with their family, friends and advocates have a few resources to seek immediate help. One is the Florida Veterans’ Care Coordination Program at 1-844-MyFLVet (693-5838). That is a statewide 211-type number answered by Florida Veterans. In addition to being equipped to help Veterans find mental-health support, it can assist with referrals to help with emergency financial needs. Veterans experiencing any mental-health crisis can also call the Department of Veteran Affairs’ Veterans Crisis Line at (800) 273-8255, extension 1. Veterans can also contact the crisis line by texting 838255, or by visiting www.VeteransCrisisLine.net. Friends and family members can also call the Veterans Crisis Line if they’re concerned about a Veteran. If a Veteran — or anyone — seems to be immediate danger of harming her- or himself, call 911 and stay with the person. Be prepared to give first responders succinct information about the person’s mental-health history, current stressors, and any behavioral patterns that can seem threatening when they’re not, such as exaggerated hand gestures when stressed.

Indian River State College (IRSC) is honored to announce that Pruitt Campus President Emeritus, Dr. Harvey Arnold, was named a 2021 Veteran Champion of the Year in Higher Education by G.I. Jobs. Before retiring from IRSC this year, Dr. Arnold, a Veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps, served the College for more than 40 years. Dr. Arnold is celebrated for his unwavering support of all IRSC students, particularly military Veterans, active-duty personnel and their families. Underscoring Dr. Arnold’s legacy is a $449,966 U.S. Department of Education grant awarded to IRSC in February to establish a Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success at the Pruitt Campus in Port St. Lucie. The dedicated Center, which opens this fall, connects student veterans with additional academic, financial, physical and social support services. “On behalf of IRSC, I am truly honored to receive this recognition from G.I. Message from Florida Adjutant General Over the past couple of days, I've watched along with all of you as Afghanistan has fallen - quickly and violently - to the Taliban. As the cities toppled one by one, the footage coming out of places like Mazar-e-Sharif, Kandahar, and Kabul left me stunned and heartbroken. Many of you reading this served in Afghanistan, or have a loved one who did. I know that you may be experiencing a lot of different emotions right now, and I wanted to take a moment to share my feelings with you. The conflict in Afghanistan cost this country nearly 20 years and the lives of more than 2,300 American service members. To watch it end like this is gut-wrenching to say the least, and it's understandable that you would have complex feelings about
it. You spent months, some of you years, during multiple deployments in this faraway nation, working tirelessly for good. You got to know its people - from our partners in the Afghan military to the children in cities and villages across the country - and you helped them. You spent birthdays and holidays there, and missed the birthday celebrations of your loved ones. You sweated under the summer sun there and shivered under the winter moon. Some of you spilled your blood there, and some even lost battle buddies there. I understand that you may feel betrayed by what's happening right now. Some of you may even be questioning whether it was worth it, or what it was all for. But I am confident that I'm not alone when I say this what you did MATTERED! As others who are more eloquent than I am have already not-
