Letter to the EDITOR

Bill amendment would allow Space A for Disabled Veterans To the Editor: The DOD, Congress and the Veterans Affairs Committee should amend a pending bill to allow full worldwide travel eligibility for 100% Disabled Veterans on military space available flights to all destinations. This means travel eligibility in the same manner as granted to retired military personnel worldwide travel to all destinations. This amendment would allow for full privilege of travel worldwide to all destinations to which military flights go. This would be of no additional cost to the DOD. I do believe the USA government should grant the full privilege of worldwide travel on Space A flights to this small group of Veterans. Though travel is suspended now due to Covid, however during normal times they are flying mostly empty. I genuinely believe that for 100% Disabled Veterans

expanding the travel program to worldwide eligibility would enhance and improve the morale, spirit and quality of life for the Veterans. So many are suffering from invisible injuries such as PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury and Military Sexual Trauma. The sacrifices the men and women have made should never go unnoticed. The men and women who served our country, and returned home injured, have already paid a big price on our behalf. If there is any space available for travel on a military aircraft to worldwide locations, there is no logical reason whatsoever why our 100 percent disabled military Veterans should not be eligible to be on those flights. I would like to thank you for your time. Best regards, Harvey Porter Veteran Voice reader

Veterans unemployment edges up following general trend Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

The seasonally adjusted national unemployment rate for Veterans was 5.3 percent in April, up from 4.6 percent the prior month. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate among non-Veterans was 6 percent, which held steady from March. Veterans have consistently had overall lower unemployment rates than non-Veterans throughout the SARS-CoV-2/ COVID-19 pandemic. The first full month of seeing the pandemic’s effect on employment was April last year. For context, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Veterans in April last year was 11.9 percent. For no The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the monthly jobs report on May 7. Seasonal adjustment is a statistical tool to even out normal monthly employment fluctuations.

Overall not seasonally adjusted Veterans employment Veterans, all cohorts taken together, had a not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 5.2 percent in April, up from 5 percent in March. The Veterans labor force partic-

ipation rate rose from 45.2 percent to 48.7 percent from March to April. The non-Veterans’ labor force participation rate rose from 60.1 to 63.8 percent in the same timeframe.

Veterans employment by cohorts The way the bureau reports employment numbers there are several ways to look at different cohorts of Veterans. For example, women Veterans had a 4.4 percent, not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in April compared to the Veteran men having 5.4 percent. Non-Veteran women had a 5.3 percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in April, whereas their male counterparts had 6.1. The youngest cohort of Veterans, which the BLS designates as “Gulf War-era II,” had a not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 5,1 percent, which was up from 5 percent the prior month. Most know this group as “Post 9-11” and most in it are, in demographer parlance, millennials, although some Gen-Z Veterans are trickling into the cohort now. The men in this cohort were at 5 percent unemployment. The women 5.7 percent. The bureau’s Gulf War-era I

Veterans, generally Gen-Xers with some millennials, had an April unemployment rate at 5.2 percent. The men were at 5.6 percent; the women 2.6. The BLS classes together Vietnam-era to World War IIera Veterans. Obviously there are almost no World War II Veterans in the workplace, and only a handful of Korean War Veterans. This grouping, for employment purposes, is almost all Vietnam-era Veterans, baby boomers. The older Veterans, according to BLS, had a 4.1 percent unemployment rate in April. The cohort the bureau identifies as “Veterans of other service periods,” includes disparate years and decades ranging from the 1950s to 1990s. About 70 percent of the men in this grouping are nearing 70 and older. About half of the women in the cohort are younger than 65. This cohort had a 6.4 percent unemployment rate in April.

Local employment The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity releases the states’ jobs report two weeks after the BLS national report. It doesn’t have Veterans-specific information. As of March the not seasonally adjusted unemployment rates in the Veteran Voice cov-

erage area were: Volusia 5.1; Seminole 4.7; Brevard 4.5; Indian River 5.2; St. Lucie 5.3; and Martin 4.1. In March Florida’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.3 The national not seasonally adjusted rate was 6.2 percent. With seasonal adjustment Florida’s unemployment rate was 4.7. The national seasonally adjusted rate was 6 percent. The national seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 6.1 percent in April.

How unemployment numbers work The national and state unemployment rates are calculated using a variety of methods. Among them are random telephone interviews with people in working ages. In general times, those that are able to work and report not having jobs, but looked for employment in the previous 30 days, are counted as unemployed. Discouraged workers — those who are able to work and want jobs, but have not sought employment in the previous 30 days — are not counted in the unemployment figure. Many call this “shadow unemployment,” and it’s inherently difficult to track due to variations for why people don’t seek jobs.

One big pat on the back Veteran Voice readers are the best at helping fellow Americans Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER

mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com

Veteran Voice readers know, probably better than most people, how important it is to keep Veterans top of mind in today’s world of so many competing interests. We’re a quiet bunch. We served our time and we were proud and honored to do it. We don’t expect any extra attention. Life goes on, sometimes more quickly than we are aware. Still, we carry on, like all other Americans. Every now and then, though, our hearts are filled with gladness when we learn a brother or sister has finally earned the medal s/he was entitled to long ago. Or about a Vet who strove above and beyond. Or when an organization fixes a Vet’s roof, or builds him a home. Or learning about a new van to take Vets to a VA center they so desperately need. So many things going on under the radar. Veterans helping Veterans. That’s just what we do. And not just for each other, but in our neighborhoods and our communities, because we care about our fellow Americans. Sometimes that gets forgotten. Well, I’d like to share another “helping hand” that people have extended to Veterans, right here in our own back yard. And it has to do with YOU.

Stepping up When we think about helping our fellow Vets, it’s most often immediate needs, like food or shelter. No Veteran wants a fellow Vet to do without, not if we can help it, and we do. In our readership, we have outfits like the Brevard Veterans Council, the Veterans Council of Indian River County, the United Veterans of St. Lucie, the Volusia Veterans Council, Martin County, and so many more, comprising innumerable groups who grant Vets emergency funds, operate food banks, fix homes, build homes, give help through Veteran Service Offices to navigate benefits — in short, help Vets help themselves when life gets a little challenging. We don’t let each other down. But every so often, it’s good to remember we don’t live in a bubble. Our non-Vet neighbors care, too. Plenty of Americans are thankful we’ve got their backs, and they show it.

Patriotic supporters You won’t find a single Veteran who doesn’t feel that family and friends have served right alongside them. In wartime or in peace, their service is just as vital. How many, many things family and friends do, from sending care packages to helping out with child care, to fund-raising. But there are plenty of other Patriots, too, and even if they don’t have a relative who’s served, they are still proud Americans and want to show their support. It is these who deserve our thanks and respect, as we look ahead to Memorial Day coming soon. Millions of Americans are thankful for the ultimate sacrifices made to preserve our way of life, though we may not think they are. They themselves may not show it every day, but they do show it, sometimes in ways that happily surprise us. This gives us hope, and boosts our spirits in a world that seems to grow dim.

A quick, enjoyable read At Veteran Voice, we like to think we give people a small, enjoyable slice of their day, with stories about our neighbors and what good things they’re up to, or stories about what’s going on in the wider Defense world they may not know about. Takes just about a half-hour to an hour’s read, every week. Very enjoyable for us — but so much more important to those Vets who are disabled, confined, or in any way closed off from the rest of the world. Especially those who can’t even afford to have any access to Vet news whatsoever.

And here is where our fellow Americans step in. Veteran Voice encourages everyone to sponsor a Veteran with a subscription, and we are proud that so many of you have stepped up to help us. We thank you so much. You are not overlooked, nor ever will be. I’m speaking to you, who has never been a Vet, nor even maybe known one. I’m speaking to you, who is thankful that someone was willing to die for your right to live as an American. I would like to thank you, on behalf of Veteran Voice, on behalf of all Veterans, for sponsoring subscriptions so that needy and deserving Veterans can get a small slice of enjoyment reading about fellow Veterans and military news that brightens their day. You may never know how such a seemingly small thing makes such a big difference. Thank you, from our hearts. When Memorial Day comes, and we all remember the sacrifices made, we thank you for recognizing our Veterans. If you would like to be a sponsor by providing a subscription for a veteran in your community, please visit www.VeteranVoiceWeekly.com and click on the "SPONSOR A VETERAN SUBSCRIPTION" option. We will match your generosity with a veteran in our local community with a year long, weekly subscription. It's only $10 per sponsored subscription. Alternately, you can mail us a check at Veteran Voice, PO Box 1487, Stuart, FL 34995. Please keep your eyes peeled each week when we give a special 'Thank You' to those who were so generous to sponsor a subscription for others.

To the Moon … And Beyond! Astronaut looks to be 1st woman to eventually reach Mars part in shaping me and giving me a lot of the skills I needed – not just the hard skills but a lot of the soft skills, like how to communicate and how to take my entire team into consideration and not just my personal needs. It’s hard to teach those things, but we do it very well in the Marine Corps. And my test piloting background — the operational experience and the engineering side of that — both tie in perfectly here.

Katie Lange

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE

Marine Corps Maj. Jasmin Moghbeli isn’t the first female active-duty Marine officer to pass the NASA astronaut training program, but her recent graduation means she’s on the short list to be the first woman to go to the Moon. Moghbeli and 10 others were the first graduates under the Artemis program, meaning they’re now eligible for missions to the International Space Station, the Moon and — one day — Mars.

Naval aviator

As an official astronaut, what’s next on your agenda?

Moghbeli was commissioned in 2005 after graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She became a naval aviator and spent the next decade piloting AH-1W Super Cobra helicopters and test piloting various others. In her career, she’s flown 25 different aircraft, accumulated 2,000 flight hours, and more than 150 combat missions. Moghbeli’s next test flight will take her further than she’s ever gone before, and she’s excited about it. But how did she get here and what lies ahead for her? She filled us in on the details.

It’s a super exciting time to be in human space exploration. We’ve been on the International Space Station for almost 20 years continuously now, and we’ve got several new vehicles on the horizon. There’s Boeing and Space X, both with their commercial crew vehicles. NASA is developing Orion and the Space Launch System to go onto the Moon, and there’s Mars with the [Lunar] Gateway program. So, there are a lot of exciting things. Right now, in my day to day, I’m focused on the human lander system and getting us to the Moon.

What was the process of getting into the astronaut candidate program? I just submitted a resume on USAJobs.gov. It sounds almost underwhelming, right? Then, I came back here [to Johnson Space Center] for two rounds of interviews and got accepted to the program.

Photo by Robert Markowitz, NASA, for Department of Defense NASA astronaut candidate Marine Corps Maj. Jasmin Moghbeli stands in front of a T-38 Talon trainer aircraft at Ellington Field near NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

over these two years has been incredible. Some of the major courses we learned were robotics, learning to speak Russian, learning about the International Space Station and its systems, and learning how to do spacewalks. Then, there’s flying the T-38 jets!

What did you struggle Tell me about the training with most? you went through. The training was really exciting and diverse. You have to be able to do a little bit of everything as an astronaut because, up in space, you’re the doctor; you’re the maintainer; you’re the scientist and the spacewalker; and, so, the variety of things we’ve learned

The hardest part, for me, was the training in the neutral buoyancy lab. That’s where we trained for spacewalks. I’ve watched astronauts do spacewalks before, and you think, ‘Wow, they make it look so easy and so smooth,’ and that the suit is just an extension of their body. But then I got

in there for the first time, and it’s just completely different than you’d imagined. You now have to walk with your hands, and anytime you squeeze your hands to do anything, you’re fighting the pressure in the suit. It was just really tricky learning how to move within that suit. It’s your own personal spacecraft at that point, and [you’re] learning how to work with it by fighting against it.

Was the Marine Corps an asset to your success? Being in the Marine Corps was a huge asset. It’s a testament to all those people and the mentorship. The Marine Corps played a very important

What advice would you give to future generations of Marines? Whatever you’re interested in, have that vision of what you want to do, but also don’t forget to focus on what you’re doing in the moment. I wasn’t always assigned to the job I wanted to be assigned to, but I put my effort into that to the best of my ability and tried to do the best I could at that job. So, whether you’re sweeping floors or doing something really cool, just do the best you can do. Also, I think something that gets lost sometimes is being kind to others. When you’re in the position to mentor someone, think back to when you were in their position and first learning something. Just remember we’re all on the same team.
