2021 goes into the books with big history Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

Year’s end’s a good time to look back. The world, nation, state and Veteran Voice coverage area have gone through important history. Veteran Voice has had the privilege of telling readers about some of it. Here are some of the stories we think were among the most important in 2021.

America leaves Afghanistan No military/Veterans news was bigger this year, this decade, than the end of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel on Aug. 30. On that day Maj. Gen. Christopher Donahue, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, XVIII Airborne Crops, boarded a C-17 at Hamid Karzi International Airport. He was the last American servicemember to leave Afghanistan. On Oct. 7, 2001, former President George W. Bush appeared on television from the White House Treaty Room. America’s response to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, had started. “On my orders the United States Military has begun strikes against al Qaeda terrorists training camps and military installations of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan,” he told America in a deadpan tone. That was the start of Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan. The next nationally memorable announcement was Dec. 1, 2009, when former President Barak Obama delivered a speech at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point to announce many more servicemembers would deploy to Afghanistan. “And as Commander in Chief I have determined that it is in our vital national interest to send an additional 30,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan,” the president told the cadets. “After 18 months, our troops will begin to come home. These are the resources that we need to seize the initiative, while building the Afghan capacity that can allow for a responsible transition of our

forces out of Afghanistan.” On May 1, 2010, Obama made the announcement none alive for it will forget — the death of al Qaeda’s leader, Osama bin Laden, during a raid on his Pakistan hideaway. In December of 2014 Obama announced the combat mission in Afghanistan over, and a transition from Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan to Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, a mission to train and support Afghan forces. That officially started on Jan. 1, 2015. On Feb. 29, 2020, former President Donald Trump interrupted a SARS-CoV-2/ COVID-19 press briefing with an announcement. Zalmay Khalilzad, the special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation struck an agreement with the dominant Taliban factions to allow the U.S. to reduce immediate troop levels and soon leave Afghanistan. “The other side is tired of war,” he said. “Everybody’s tired of war.”

Trump later continued. “We’ve had tremendous success in Afghanistan in the killing of terrorists, but it’s time, after all these years, to go and to bring our people back home. We want to bring our people back home. And again, it’s been a long journey in Afghanistan.” The drawdown was under way when President Joe Biden took the oath of office. On April 14, 2021, he appeared on television from the White House Treaty Room to say he’d chosen a hard date by which the withdrawal would be done — Sept. 11. “After consulting closely with our allies and partners, with our military leaders and intelligence personnel, with our diplomats and our development experts, with the Congress and (Vice President Kamala Harris), as well as with (Ashraf Ghani, the now former president of Afghanistan) and many others around the world, I have concluded that it’s time to end America’s longest war,” Biden said. The Department of Defense reports that more than 775,000 servicemembers served in support of operations Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan and Freedom’s Sentinel over 19 years and almost 11 months, and four presidencies.

DeSantis aims to revive Florida State Guard Gov. Ron DeSantis surprised a lot of people by announcing plans to revive the Florida State Guard. “So, I’m going to be recommending in the (state’s 20222023) budget $3.5 million to reestablish the Florida State Guard,” he said at a Dec. 2 press conference. “The Florida State Guard will act as a civilian volunteer force that’ll have the ability to assist the National Guard in state-specific emergencies.” DeSantis didn’t go into detail about his vision for a revitalized Florida State Guard at the 20-minute press conference in Pensacola, except that the appropriation request would be enough to train and equip 200 volunteers. The existence of a state defense force isn’t

new in the Sunshine State. It’s also not unusual. More than 20 states have defense forces, including such diverse ones as Georgia and California. The Florida State Defense Force, Florida State Guard, was the successor to the Great War era County Guards of Florida. It existed from 1941 to 1947, during World War II. Its primary task was to respond to natural disasters. It participated in homeland defense, too. For example, the First Air Squadron of the Florida State Guard patrolled for German U-boats. During the 1942 Operation Drumbeat, German U-boats sank at least 40 sizable ships off Florida’s coastline along with an uncounted number of smaller vessels.

Florida National Guard short The proposed revival of the Florida State Guard to “assist the National Guard in state-specific emergencies” is rooted in a problem the state’s adjutant general has spoken about in the clearest terms. Florida needs about 25,000 National Guard members. It has about 12,000. During his annual report to the Florida Senate’s Commit-

Florida Legislature to consider Veterans bills Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

The Florida Legislature will convene on Jan. 11 for its annual 60-day session. The Florida Department of Veteran Affairs lists about 40 military- and Veterans-interest bills the Florida House and Senate will consider. The bills cover a wide range of areas from educational opportunities for Veterans to motorcycle specialty tags, from free admission for Veterans to state parks to encouraging Congress to do more to curb suicide among Veterans. Some of the bills have companions, and some are substantially similar. Many are appropriations requests. To see the com-

plete list, visit www.floridavets.org. Here are a few of the bills. Veteran Voice will be covering the Florida Legislature and other bills until March. If readers want help with figuring out how to support specific military- or Veterans-related bills, they’re welcome to contact patrick@Veteranvoiceweekly.com.

SB 438/HB 465 SB 438 and its companion HB 465 aim to expand the state’s definition of “uniformed services” to “include the United States Space Force; revising the military service branches for which any county or state official who is called to active service may receive a leave of absence.” Patrick Space Force Base and Cape Ca-

naveral Space Force Station were the first former Air Force facilities to transition to the Space Force. Patrick was renamed from Air Force to Space Force base on Dec. 9, 2020. While there is not yet a Space National Guard, and there may never be, the Florida government strongly advocates for one. It hopes to get Space National Guard units assigned by the National Guard Bureau. Additionally, Florida hopes to land the STARCOM, Space Training and Readiness Command, and some of its deltas. “Delta” is a Space Force term for a “wing.” As in an Air Force wing. Space Force’s new Space Operations Command is in Colorado Springs, and the upstart Space

Private Eddie Slovik. Source: Wikipedia.org

The cost of citizenship Soldier Eddie Slovik was executed in World War II. Was it worth the cost? Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER

mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com

On this day in 1944, we in America were in a fight to the death of more than just Nazism. More than just Communism. We were fighting to protect our way of life. On this day in 1944, a Soldier, Eddie Slovik, claimed that he would not fight if asked. He was shot by firing squad. Why did his situation cause such a national conversation? It has to do with wartime. The President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, signed the warrant that sentenced a Soldier to death.

Background According to This Day in Military History dot.com — “Private Eddie Slovik was a draftee. Originally classified 4-F because of a prison record (grand theft auto), he was bumped up to a 1-A classification when draft standards were lowered to meet growing personnel needs. In January 1944, he was trained to be a rifleman, which was not to his liking, as he hated guns. In August of the same year, Slovik

was shipped to France to fight with the 28th Infantry Division, which had already suffered massive casualties in the fighting there and in Germany. Slovik was a replacement, a class of soldier not particular respected by officers. As he and a companion were on the way to the front lines, they became lost in the chaos of battle, only to stumble upon a Canadian unit that took them in. Slovik stayed on with the Canadians until October 5, when they turned him and his buddy over to the American military police, who reunited them with the 28th Division, now in Elsenborn, Belgium.” So it can be assumed that Slovik was not the best example of American citizenship during World War II.

Paying the price And during combat — “Slovik was a replacement, a class of soldier not particularly respected by officers. As he and a companion were on the way to the front lines, they became lost in the chaos of battle, only to stumble upon a Canadian unit that took them in. Slovik stayed on with the Canadians until October 5, when they turned him and his buddy over to the American military police, who reunited them with the 28th Division, now in Elsenborn, Belgium. “No charges were brought; replacements getting lost early on in their tours

of duty were not unusual. But exactly one day after Slovik returned to his unit, he claimed he was “too scared and too nervous” to be a rifleman and threatened to run away if forced into combat. His admission was ignored-and Slovik took off. One day after that he returned, and Slovik signed a confession of desertion, claiming he would run away again if forced to fight, and submitted it to an officer of the 28th. “The officer advised Slovik to take the confession back, as the consequences would be serious. Slovik refused, and he was confined to the stockade. The 28th Division had seen many cases of soldiers wounding themselves or deserting in the hopes of a prison sentence that would at least protect them from the perils of combat. So a legal officer of the 28th offered Slovik a deal: Dive into combat immediately and avoid the court-martial.”

The cost of citizenship We ask ourselves every day why we are Americans. Nowadays, none of us wants to pay the price, it seems. Or does it? There will have to be Eddie Sloviks to pay, if we want to preserve our way of life. There is no honor in dishonor. It is written in our Constitution. Always a price.

RECOGNIZED AT LAST Sanford native becomes 24th Florida Medal of Honor recipient Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

Tamara Cashe stood quietly by President Joe Biden in the White House’s East Room. Minutes earlier, the President told the powerful story about her husband’s worst day, and finest hour. After a 16-year wait, Sanford’s son Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe received the Medal of Honor on Dec. 16. He’s now the 24th Medal of Honor recipient credited to Florida under the rules of the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs. His name will be added to the wall recognizing Medal of Honor recipients at the State Capitol. If and when the state Veterans department requests nominations for naming the under-construction state Veterans nursing home in Orlando, Cashe’s name will surely be among the most popular suggestions. The president handed Cashe’s widow the nation’s highest recognition for valor. Minutes before, he told Cashe’s family and her — “I know it’s tough. As honored as you are, it’s got to be tough to be here today.”

Central Florida’s hero “The family of Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe has been 16 years in coming (to receive his Medal of Honor),” the president said at the Medal of Honor ceremony. He thanked two members of Congress — a Democratic and a Republican. “Rep. (Stephanie) Murphy, Rep. (Michael) Waltz thank you for your efforts, your continued efforts, along with the team of Sgt. Cashe’s commanders, commander in arms, his medical team and the family who worked with such dedication over so many years to make this recognition possible.” Congressional efforts to get Cashe’s Silver Star upgraded to the Medal of Honor started with former representative John Mica. After Murphy defeated him for the congressional seat, she took up Mica’s efforts in Congress to get

Cashe upgraded to the Medal of Honor. Mica had been successful in getting the Army Reserve center in Sanford named after Cashe. Murphy got the post office in Oviedo named after the sergeant. Waltz, who’s a Green Beret and colonel in the Florida National Guard, previously told Veteran Voice, Cashe is a “legend in Army circles.”

Biden tells his story The president told Cashe’s story. “Oct. 17, 2005, Sgt Cashe was commanding a Bradley Fighting Vehicle on night patrol in Iraq. They came under enemy fire. An improvised explosive device detonated, igniting the vehicle’s fuel and engulfing it in flames. Sergeant extracted himself and without hesitation turned back to the vehicle to help free the driver and extinguish flames on the driver. In the process, Sgt. 1st Class Cashe’s uniform drenched in fuel caught fire, causing severe burns. “Patrol was still taking enemy fire, but Cashe thought only of his fellow Soldiers trapped in the troop compartment. So he pushed his own pain aside

and returned to the burning vehicle and pulled four Soldiers free. Four more. “At this point, with secondand third-degree burns covering almost 75 percent of his body, his uniform mostly burned away, the sergeant saw there was still two Soldiers and an interpreter unaccounted for. So, he went back to the inferno for a third time and got everyone out of that inferno. “That was his code. His love for his Third Infantry Division ran deep. -No Soldier was going to be left behind on his watch. When helicopters began to arrive, he insisted that his troops be evacuated before he would go. Later, at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas, where he and other men on his team were taken for treatment, when he regained his ability to speak his first thoughts were for his unit. He asked, first thing, ‘How are my

boys? … How are my boys?’ “Alwyn Cashe was a Soldier’s Soldier. A warrior who literally walked through fire for his troops. Sergeant succumbed to his injuries Nov. 8, 2005, surrounded by those he loved and who loved him. He was a hero. He’s a beloved son and brother. A proud husband and father of three children. Sgt. Cashe and his family gave everything for our country. In devotion to his memory, and years of working to make sure that his courPresident Joe Biden age and selflessness were properly documented and honored, is a testament to the love he inspired, and the legacy he left behind. “Sgt. 1st Class Cashe is now the seventh individual receiving the Medal of Honor for his actions in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the first African

tee on Military and Veterans Affairs, Space and Domestic Security in January of 2020, Maj. Gen. James Eifert gave a grim forecast about force strength to meet disasters such as hurricanes, “We cannot adequately support the state’s citizens on Florida’s worst day with the size of the National Guard at this point,” he told the committee. The Florida Legislature is powerless to increase the size of the state’s share of the National Guard. The National Guard Bureau allocates units and troop strength among the 50 states and four territories. Former Gov. Lawton Chiles came up with a fix for National Guard shortages back in 1993 — the Emergency Management Assistance Compact. All states and territories joined in the agreement to share National Guard members with one another during crises. But, Eifert recently told the Florida Legislature that failed during the SARSCoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic. Every state and territory was in a disaster and needed their National Guard. The Florida Legislature is considering two companion memorial bills to pressure Congress to get the National Guard Bureau to reevaluate its troop allocations to states. Those are SM 826 and HM 505.

State opens Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home The Florida Department of Veteran Affairs had its Flag Raising and Open House at the Ardie R. Copas State Veterans Nursing Home, Port St. Lucie, on Aug. 27. Construction and opening of the home was an eight-year venture that had a lot of twists and disappointing delays. During its 2013 session, the Florida Legislature approved about $100,000 for an independent study to determine where the next state Veterans nursing home should go. In early 2014 the governor and Florida Cabinet authorized sending letters to 10 counties for them to express interest in hosting the next one built.

Eight, including St. Lucie County, put in bids to have the next state Veterans nursing home. The governor and cabinet created a site-selection committee to tour the eight proposed sites. The committee picked Port St. Lucie. By December of 2014 officials from the state Veterans department stood at the site to announce groundbreaking for the home would happen within a year. That year for the groundbreaking the state Veterans department predicted came and passed. By early 2016, the state Veterans department was mostly done designing the facility. But, the federal Department of Veterans Affairs was then adopting new design standards Florida would have to meet. In early 2017 the then new Secretary of Veteran Affairs, Dr. David Shulkin, ended the VA’s insistence on the new design standards, and things started moving again. The state had a ceremonial groundbreaking on March 20, 2018. Land clearing started in June that year. Opening was projected for summer of 2020 assuming there were no major hurricanes or other catastrophic events. Of course, there’d be a catastrophic event. The pandemic. The pandemic made getting the needed medical and other supplies to open it difficult. It also made hiring medical personnel difficult.

Legislature funds Florida Veterans Foundation The Florida Legislature appropriated $245,000 to the Florida Veterans Foundation in the 2021-2022 state budget. It’s a not-for-profit the legislature created in 2008 to assist the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs. This was the first time the legislature funded the foundation it created. The money was for the Florida Veterans Foundation Veterans in Crisis Emergency Fund. The funding is specifically to help Veterans adversely affected by the SARS-CoV-2/ COVID-19 pandemic and related economic downturn. During the next legislative session — Jan. 11 to March 11 — the legislature will consider Rep. Fiona McFarland’s HB 2291, an appropriations request to get $360,000 for the Veterans in Crisis Emergency

UAP report On June 25 the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released the awaited “Preliminary Assessment: Unidentified Aerial Phenomena.” In some ways the unclassified nine-page report that exists largely because of the efforts of Florida’s Sen. Marco Rubio is dull reading. In others, it’s revolutionary if only for being a military/intelligence report seeking to eliminate snickering when people bring up UFOs, now increasingly called UAPs, unidentified aerial phenomena. The military basically confessed servicemembers have brushes with flying things it can’t explain.

The report says the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force — created by the Intelligence Authorization Act of 2021 — found 144 governmental reports about UAPs spotted over 185 months. That’s November of 2004 to March of 2021. Of those 144 reports, 80 “involved observation with multiple sensors.” In other words, they weren’t lighting effects playing tricks on people’s eyes. The reports says there are instances of equipment glitches. upgraded to the Medal of Honor, last December. The bill granted an exception to the usual five-year rule to receive the nation’s highest recognition of valor while serving in uniform. Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper in August last year made a finding that Cashe deserved the upgrade. Biden also awarded the Medal of Honor to Sgt. 1st Class Christopher A. Celiz and Master Sgt. Earl D. Plumlee, both Army, on Dec. 16.

Veteran Voice meets interesting people Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

Veteran Voice gets to talk to some of the neatest people in Florida. Despite the ongoing SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19, this year, 2021 was no exception. Here are a few of the interesting folks Veteran Voice met and told you about this last year.

the Archdiocese of St. Louis,” he said. As Ridgeway progressed through seminarian studies he saw and pursued other ways to minister. Ridgeway didn’t leave what he learned in ministerial studies behind. “That gave me the foundation for the many steps I took in this agency,” he said. The Cape Canaveral National Cemetery opened in 2016 with director Don Murphy. He retired in 2021. Ridgeway went to work for the federal government at the National Personnel Record Center where he worked on retrieving and reconstructing military records. A few years later he started working for the NCA at the St. Louis scheduling office. Within a year he was promoted to the Eligibility Verification Division. Before long he was an instructor at the NCA’s training center. In 2017 Ridgeway made his way to Lake Worth to be the assistant director of the South Florida National Cemetery. He ended up being the interim director there before going to Cape Canaveral.

Timothy Moore, Indian River State College Photo courtesy of the Department of Veteran Affairs Kevin T. Ridgeway is the new director of the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery. He came on board in the spring of 2021.

Kevin Ridgeway, Cape Canaveral National Cemetery The Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, Mims, got a new director in 2021 — Kevin T. Ridgeway. “I love (the National Cemetery Administration),” he told Veteran Voice. “I love what it stands for and what we do.” Interestingly, Ridgeway didn’t start his youth aiming to serve the nation’s Veterans. His urge to serve took a more directly spiritual bent. “I joined the seminary with

Veteran Voice met the president of Indian River State College in May. We were doing a story about the school getting a Department of Education Centers of Excellence for Veteran Student Success grant. The St. Lucie County school was one of 16 nationwide that received the education department’s grant. It’s using the $450,000 for the IRSC Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success at the Port St. Lucie campus. Moore insisted on talking to Veteran Voice himself. He has a lot of experience with Veterans and higher education. He was in the Army for, as Moore said, “six years, 11 months and 16 days.” Among other things in those six years, 11 months and 16 days, Moore served as a nuclear, biological and chemical officer at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. “It’s like Area 51 almost,”

said. “I get to impact somebody just with a handshake, or pat on the back.” Moore added, “It all goes back to being a soldier. As a young officer it’s drilled into you — take care of your troops.” Moore started as president at IRSC in September of 2020.

Moore told Veteran Voice. In other words, huge, sparsely staffed, and highly secretive. Yes, some conspiracy theorists are fixated on that military base and hypothesize interesting suppositions about what goes on there. Moore said what he remembers most about Dugway is solitude. Moore didn’t set out to be an educator. A friend of his suggested he apply for a position at a university when he was separating from the service, so he did. Since then, Moore’s had numerous positions at Kansas State, Auburn, Edward Via College, and Florida A&M. He started his work in higher education at Auburn University, Alabama. “I liked the innovation,” Moore said. “I liked the freedom of thought.” He didn’t say it with these words, but it’s obvious he also loved students. “The thing that gets me every day, I get to change lives,” he

Curtis Paulisin is the president the upstart Veterans of Indian River County. Paulisin is a Gen-Xer who served in Operation Desert Shield/ Storm. That’s a generation of in-between Veterans that people sorta forget about. That organization did the organization work for the 2021 Mary Snyder Golf Tournament. He’s been working at forming Veterans of Indian River County for a few years. “I was actually the treasurer for the Italian American War Veterans,” Paulisin told Veteran Voice. “I got voted in as the commander.” That landed him on the Veterans Council of Indian River County. “I served seven years as the vice president of the Veterans council,” said Paulisin. Over that time, Paulisin has worked closely with the Vietnam Veterans of Indian River County, an organization he’s enthusiastic about and working with. Paulisin said younger Veterans — the Gen-Xers, millennials and now Gen-Yers — need to form organizations to carry on the works in progress. “We’re looking at the Desert Storm and forward to join and continue the work the previous generations paved for us,” he explained. Jan. 16 is the anniversary of Operation Desert Storm. Paulisin is one of the about 700,000 servicemembers who deployed to eject Iraqi troops out of Kuwait. When he tells people he’s a Gulf War Veteran, many respond — “‘Oh, the easy one,’” Paulisin said. “Oh, ‘the easy one,’ I think. They don’t think we did much over there.” The immediate successor to

from page 4 Systems Command is in Los Angeles. The third command is still in orbit looking for a permanent home. It was activated in August. Sen. Danny Burgess filed the bill in the Florida Senate. It’s been referred to the Senate’s committees on Military and Veterans Affairs, Space, and Domestic Security and Appropriations Committee, along with the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Tourism and Economic Development Committee. On the Florida House said, Brevard’s Rep. Tyler Sirois and Sam Killebrew introduced the bill. It’s been referred to two committees and is currently in the Local Administration & Veterans Affairs Subcommittee.

SB 478 Sen. Jason Brodeur filed this bill that, if passed and signed by the governor, would require the Statewide Office for Suicide Prevention at the Department of Children and Families to undertake a study on death by suicide in the state. The bill makes specific mention of Veterans. “The analysis must include information on…Veteran status and age groups of individuals served by mobile response teams,” reads the bill. For example, New Horizons of the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee has a mobile response team that assists callers by phone or by traveling to them. It covers

Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties in the Veteran Voice coverage area. SB 478 doesn’t have a companion bill in the Florida House of Representatives. It’s been referred to the committees on Children, Families, and Elder Affairs; Appropriations; and the Subcommittee on Health and Human Services.

SB 550 SB 550 would include “military status” to the Florida Civil Rights Act of 1992. That would give servicemembers and Veterans protection from discrimination in employment. The state’s current Civil Rights Act includes protections for individuals’ race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy status, national origin, age, handicaps, and marital status. It’s likely “handicap” will sometime be revised to “disabilities.” Sen. Janet Cruz filed the bill. The bill has been referred to the Senate’s committees on Commerce and Tourism; Judiciary; and Rules. SB 550 doesn’t have a companion bill.

HB 2103 Rep. Tyler Sirois filed an appropriations request to get $150,000 for Veterans housing assistance in Brevard County. The request is nonrecurring. The appropriations request is referred to the House Appropriations Committee and Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee. If approved by the legislature and governor the money would go to National Veterans’ Homeless Support, which serves Brevard, Seminole and Orange

counties.

HB 2211 Rep. David Smith filed an appropriations request to get $150,000 for the Veterans Entrepreneurship Initiative – Seminole County Expansion. The request is nonrecurring. The appropriations request is referred to the House Appropriations Committee and Infrastructure & Tourism Appropriations Subcommittee. If approved by the legislature and governor the money would go to Veterans Entrepreneurship Initiative.

HB 2291 Rep. Fiona McFarland has filed an appropriations request to get $360,000 for the Veterans in Crisis Emergency Fund administered by the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs. The money would get to Veterans through the state-created not for profit Florida Veterans Foundation. If the legislature and governor approve the nonrecurring appropriations request this would be the second year for the Veterans in Crisis Emergency Fund. The legislature giving the fund $245,000 for fiscal year 2021-2022. From July of 2020 to June of 2021 the Foundation served 12,871 Veterans in financial crisis or with other immediate needs. Part of the funds would go to salaries for a caseworker and intern — $60,000. The appropriations request is referred to the House Appropriations Committee and Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee.

Operation Desert Shield started with a 42-day air campaign followed by an astonishing 100-hour ground war ending with a hugely lopsided victory for international coalition forces led by the United States. That’s the part which sticks in a lot of people’s minds — lightning-fast ground war ending in victory with seemingly few casualties. To untrained eyes it all looked no fuss, no muss. “Something (civilians) feel was so quick, it wasn’t quick to us,” Paulisin said.

Photo courtesy of Robert “Bob” Adkins Robert “Bob” Adkins wears his 1st Air Cavalry hat and golden spurs to let people know he’s a Vietnam War Veteran. Adkins is president of the Daytona Beach chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America and the Missing in America Project’s Veteran recovery officer for Volusia County.

Robert “Bob” Adkins, VVA 1048, Daytona Beach, Missing in America Project–Florida In March the Missing in America Project–Florida interred 18 Veterans at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery. That’s how Veteran Voice met Robert “Bob” Adkins, the Veteran recovery officer for Volu-

sia County. Most of the Veterans’ cremains interred in the Call to Honor #23 were found at Volusia County funeral homes. One was found in a family closet. That was Roger Lee Adkins, Robert’s brother. “I am interring my oldest brother in this Call of Honor,” Adkins told Veteran Voice. “I found out my mother had (his cremains) in her closet since 1991. She did not want to give him up. I convinced her (Cape Canaveral) is where I am going to be buried — in this national cemetery — and I want to be with him.” Adkins could well have had a private ceremony for his brother. Adkins said Roger Lee would have wanted to be interred with other Veterans the Missing in America Project found. When Adkins walks into a room, folks notice. “I do wear gold spurs,” he said. ‘That is because I’m a combat war Veteran. And, of course, my cavalry hat. When you walk into a room wearing that cavalry hat and spurs, people — they do tend to look at you.” For the minority of Veteran Voice readers who don’t already get it from his attire, Adkins is a 1st Air Calvary alum. His rich, gray beard set under aviator’s glasses reveal his maturity. Taken together, the package tells the knowledgeable observer his story. He’s a Vietnam Veteran. “The first 45 years of my life I never spoke about Vietnam,” he said. “Most of my friends didn’t even know I was there. As I got older and wiser and more patriotic, that’s when I decided I should be proud of what I’ve done, and I should be proud of my brother and sister Veterans for what they have done.” The Daytona Beach VVA chapter is hosting its first golf tournament on Jan. 8. Information about it is at vva1048. com/golf-tournament.

Art Grenci, Brevard County 10-13 Club There are many steel beams from the World Trade Center respectfully placed as memorials around the country to remind people of the losses in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Finding pieces of the Pentagon is much, much harder. Brevard County’s Art

Photo courtesy of Art Grenci Art Grenci, right, stands with Tom Neidert, district chief of the Brevard County Fire Rescue by a piece of the Pentagon on display at Brevard County Fire Rescue Station 48, 5550 Porada Drive. Viera.

Grenci has led efforts to acquire and place sacred parts of the Pentagon that fell when American Airlines Flight 77 struck the heart of the military. “For me, it’s ‘Never forget,’” Grenci told Veteran Voice. Grenci has helped acquire about 13 pieces of the Pentagon and loaned them for permanent memorial and traveling displays. One 80-pound piece of the Pentagon is now on display at the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center, 400 S. Sykes Creek Parkway, Merritt Island. It was unveiled during the 9/11 Brevard County 20th Anniversary Memorial Tribute. Grenci joined the Army in 1979 and served until 1983. After that, he went to work as a sheriff’s officer in New Jersey. Grenci later moved to California and worked for the Los Angeles Police Department. He was among the many police officers from throughout the nation dispatched to New York City to assist at the World Trade Center following the 2001 terrorist attacks. “After that, when I started building memorials, the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club sent me to the Pentagon to get some steel for memorials,” said Grenci. The Pentagon is much small-

er than the World Trade Center’s famous towers were. Additionally, it didn’t experience a total collapse during the plane attack. In other words, there’s a lot less of the Pentagon available for memorials than the World Trade Center. Grenci made contact with Mike Sullivan, former director of the Pentagon Renovation and Construction Program. “He handled the yard where all the stone was after the attack,” said Grenchi. He added, “When I went in there and told Mike Sullivan what I wanted to do, he gave me a piece (of the Pentagon) the size of a softball.” Grenchi explained he was looking for larger pieces of the Pentagon for memorials. “He took me into the yard and told me to take what I wanted,” Grenchi said. “I had to get a firetruck from Jersey. We loaded a lot of pieces.” Brevard County likely has more pieces of the Pentagon than any other in the U.S., because of Grenci. One piece of the Pentagon is on display at the American Police Hall of Fame and Museum at 6350 Horizon Drive, Titusville. Another is on display at the Brevard County Fire Rescue Station 48, 5550 Porada Drive. Viera.
