Surak Festival On Sep. 3rd, 2010, the 9th Surak festival was held in Surak High School. The Surak festival had a lot to see because many students and clubs prepared for this event very hard. The 9th Surak festival’s voting results were as follows : the Dance team (A2G) topped the list, Band team (Broken Radio) took second place, and Song festival, Pungmul band (打Rock), Hip-hop music club (BMC) came 3rd, 4th, and 5th, respectively.

Science club HOAS’s various interesting experiments drew students’ attention. They prepared leaf bookmarks, candles, coolpack making, and the most popular of all, a starch experiment, which is walking on starch. If you run on top of starch, you don’t sink and can walk on it but at very fast speed. All of these kinds of events made us easily understand science, which was good.

SRBC Broadcast festival got students interested and laughing because of CF parody, dubbing performance, and music video parody. They prepared games and quiz events, as well. So, many students actively participated in this festival. The dance team (A2G) attracted the attention of the public by opening their act showing their abdominal muscles. They received an even more favorable reception than last year. A2G performed Michael Jackson’s Dangerous, Rain’s Love Song, Miss A’s Bad girl Good girl, etc. The audience was on fire. The audience yelled and shook luminous sticks. They couldn’t conceal their excitement and shouted “SO HOT!”

The Symposium at Surak! The honorable winning teams with the principal in the awards ceremony

On September 6th, the Symposium that was organized by Surak High School was held at Surak High School’s audiovisual room and library. Many students participated in this symposium by working hard, even during summer vacation. This symposium was sponsored by the math and science department’s teachers and its purpose was to make students study about their interests and ultimately to develop their skills studying on their own. In the symposium there were two sections separated into natural sciences and liberal arts, so students considered what they were interested in and took part in one of the sections. The mood of the place where the symposium was being held was heavy but also vibrant. Sung So Yeon (2-7), who is one of the participants said “I’m nervous because it seems that other competitors had prepared much better than our team did.” The awards ceremony of this symposium took place about 1 month later. In the natural sciences section, Joo So-yeon (1-5) and Ahn Byung-hoon (1-6) took first place. Kim Seong-kwon (2-10), Lee Doyoung (2-4) came second. In liberal arts one, Kim So-Yim (2-3), Kim Ki-yong (2-6) and Yoon Deok-hyun (2-6) ranked first.

Japchae Mix the World The SNC met our honorable winners, Kim Ki-yong (2-6), Yoon Deok-hyun (2-6) and Kim So-yim (2-3). Their title was “Japchae, Mix the World”, and the reason they chose this topic was that they thought that our Korean food is rich in nutrients and delicious but, somehow, its value was not recognized worldwide. So, their agenda was how to promote Japchae abroad. They interviewed more than 60 foreigners in Itaewon and they made new recipes that can satisfy the world’s various tastes. For example, they made a dumpling-like Japche because more westerners are familiar with dumplings and it is bitesized, which means people eat it easily. Also, they put cheese in it to match their taste. They also came up with other recipes for Chinese and Japanese flavor. All the foods were made from Interviewing foreigners for their Japchae survey conducted in Itawon

scratch by Kim So-yim, whose future dream is to become a world-famous chef like Edward Kwon.

Cover Story

Happy Halloween The month of October is one my favorite months of the year. The reason for this is because the last day of the month, October 31st, is when Halloween is celebrated in North America. Halloween is the second most popular holiday for North American children. Children get to dress up in whatever horrifying or fun costume they desire: zombies, werewolves, vampires, ghosts, goblins, princesses, and super heroes. Adults also enjoy Halloween. Parents take their kids trick or treating and even dress up to try and scare the trick or treaters when they come knocking. Some of my favorite Halloween memories took place in school. All the teachers in my schools dressed up in scary costumes, so it was really fun to write a math test with a class full of monsters and a teacher dressed like a scarecrow. ^^ I hope students were able to take away something about Halloween from my classes in October, as it was really enjoyable for me. Additionally, if Surak students have a chance to travel to North America in the end of October to experience Halloween firsthand, please jump at the chance. It’s a worthwhile experience.

Opinion

I would like to raise a question. “How safe is our school?” Nowadays throughout the newspaper we can often hear of incidents that outsiders come to school and sexually assault some students. A few days ago, a certain invasion from outsider happened in our school, too. The outsider came to the classroom and said to students that if they bought a ticket worth 3,000 won from him they would be able to take a picture worth 60,000 won. Many innocent students bought them, but what the photographer said turned out to be a lie.

How can we prevent all this from happening? Here Are Some Solutions :

ass Visitor’s P다 영합니 방문을 환

name :

f visit : purpose o visit : person to mber : phone nu ool igh Sch Surak H

Solution 1

1. Visitor’s Pass One of the solutions is to use a visitor’s pass. When outsiders visit our school, they have to get a visitor’s pass on which they have to write their name, purpose of visit, a person to visit, phone number, and so on, to make sure that he or she is not a perfect stranger.

Solution 2

2. Teacher's Name Tag I think that this fraud case took place because we can’t distinguish between insiders and outsiders. It is impossible that we know all of the faculty members in our school because there are almost 80 people. Therefore, it would be great if teachers also wear a name tag and we can easily single out outsiders.

Stars in the sky Photo

O

n November 6th, 40 students and 5 teachers arrived at the

astronomical observatory in Kangwon province. We saw the stars and we could see Sirius, the Orion belt, the Cassiopeia and Pegasus constellations, the Lunar Surface Access Module called Altair, Vega, the milky way, and so on. Because the sky was dark, we could see the stars very well. However, some of the stars were stuck in fog and we had to wait. Over time, constellation finally revealed itself. Fortunately, I took many constellation photos with my own camera. Here are Orion belt

Interview

SNC meet Hanyang Jounal!

Editor in Chief explaining the process of newspaper publication

On September 4, 2010, we visited The Hanyang Journal, the press of Hanyang University. In 1970 the press started to publish its first newspaper named The Hanyang Times, but it had to stop due to the suppression of the campus press by the government in the 1980s. Fortunately, it was able to be reborn with the new name, “The Hanyang Journal”. Just like us, SNC, the HanYang Journal press delivers the news about inside and outside of the school, some controversial issues, book reviews, cartoons, etc. all of which are written in English.

Interview Q & A Q. How can I join Hanyang Jounal?

A

The first thing I’d like to tell you is, ‘Do not apply to the press just because you are proficient in English.’ It’ll just spoil the pleasure of participation. The proficiency of English doesn’t matter the most. More important is passion and eager-

ness. You must also have an interest in social problems and knowledge about culture. Q What makes a good article?

A

Knowledge in English would have little impact on the quality of articles. It is the novelty of the newspaper item that matters most. Discover a good story that can catch people’s attention.

Vocabulary press 언론사 / suppression 탄압 / publish 발행하다 / apply 지원하다 / spoil 망치다

Q Any interview tips?

A

An interview is not about what you don’t know, it’s about what

you do know, which means you make sure of your intention to interview beforehand. You have to check the facts regarding the interviewee first and find out the most interesting items and ask about them in depth through the inter-

view. So, investigate the interviewee in depth. It would be helpful because you can check whether the answers are right or not.

Q What is the most challenging aspect as a reporter?

A

I did my best to write articles but my seniors pointed out many er-

rors in it. They told me useful advice, but sometimes I was worn out and disappointed. And I feel frustrated when the interview keeps going against me and ends up being the worst aspect.

The Admission Officer System These days many Koreans worry about the future of Korea’s education. Korea’s education is focusing only on college entrance exams, so many students can’t learn about social skills and develop their talents. Hence, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology announced its new education policy. The new policy is ‘the admission officer system,’ whose aim is to select the students who have great potential and passion.

We posed this question to a parent and teacher:

Q. Do you think ‘The Admission Officer System’ is the right alternative? Choi Kyung Rak (2-4)’s father, Choi Hyun Cheol This is good because this can bring diversity when picking promising students rather than concentrating solely on a college entrance exam. This will take the burden off a parent's shoulders who already have to spend a huge amount of money on private education.

Social studies teacher, Kim Tae Jin Any student who actively participates in school events can have a chance to be highly sought after just as much as boring book worms who go straight to cram schools everyday. It will eventually help students find out who they really are, what they want to be, and what they are good at.

The ways to prepare the admission official system Currently, there are a lot of universities that have the admission officer system. For this reason, many students’ interest in this system has been increasing.

The ways to prepare the admission official system

Volunteering Universities consider periodic voluntary service as being more important than single voluntary service.

Leadership Working as a member of the student council can really help your admission to college. As a leader, you can practice your leadership and also prepare yourself to be valuable leader in the society.

Reading quality books You can meet incredible scholars and mentors in your book or even have dreams that you never dreamt before. It will broaden your horizon, and admission officers will see the value of students who read many quality books.

‘창의적 체험활동 종합 지원 시스템(extracurricular program)’ is an on-line database system for students to keep track of their performances inside and outside of school and help them write their own portfolio easily based on their data online. Extracurricular program is comprised of seven categories: writing resumes, student government activities, club activities, volunteering, career search and development, afterschool activities, and reading. If you join this site and manage your portfolio well, you can prove to the national colleges that you are a well-developed complete person. JUSTICE

What is the right thing to do? #1 Justice : What is the right thing to do? According to Kant, it is a universal moral law and in terms of the ethics of Aristotle, justice is about keeping a balance. However, I think differently. In my opinion justice is about tolerance and comprehension by reason. Unfortunately, it is too easy for people to act without any reason, and they usually act upon their instincts. If achieving only what we want, we might fall into unreasonable expectations and create a lack of morality for us. So we should understand others by reasonable judgment and tolerate them with a “putting yourself in someone else’s shoes” at-

titude. When considering others, we can actualize justice and complete the general good in society. We should make an effort to be a rational altruist who helps other people. by Do-yeong Lee

Celeb’s

Endless Incidents When Will It End? MC Mong’s intentional extraction has become a hot issue in Korean MC Mong

society. He was charged without detention for giving 80 million won to a dentist for keeping quiet, in order to avoid military conscription. But he is not the only celebrity who became involved in draft conspiracy. Steve Seung jun Yoo, one of the most famous singers during the 1990s, was prohibited entry into Korea because of his escape to the USA and giving up Korean citizenship.

Besides avoiding military conscription, various types of misconPsy

ducts have been committed by more and more celebrities. For instance, Korean singer Psy ( Park Jae sang) was imprisoned for habitually smoking marijuana in November of 2001. Another singer, Shin Jung Hwan was taken to a police station on account of gambling. Apart from them, there are lots of other celebrities who had broken the law. But all of them has something in common. They share conceit, arrogance and a sense of discretionary entitlement. As a public figure, celebrities must be responsible for their words and behavior. Without changing their mind, it would be hard to see those incidents being removed from Korean society.
