COMPETITION TABLES The 2013 RBS Six Nations saw an interesting shift in the standings from previous years. Scotland’s third place and Italy’s fourth place finishes were the highest equal and highest outright positions for both teams respectively since the first Six Nations tournament in 2000. It was also the lowest positions that both Ireland and France had seen since the 2000 tournament suggesting a possible change in Six Nations supremacy.

RBS SIX NATIONS 2013 TOURNAMENT REPORT The 2013 RBS Six Nations saw the continuation of a number of key trends and a couple of big changes from previous years. Although ruck recycle speed dropped by over 0.6 seconds, there was still a continued drop in made gainline %. There was a decrease in over half an hour of running rugby compared with previous years, despite an increase in advantages played. The 2013 season also saw a continued rise of kicking in general play, a significant increase in penalties scored and a significant decrease in tries scored. The number of free kicks given in 2013 were almost double that of the 2012 total.

TOP POINTS SCORER Leigh HALFPENNY Wales (74 Points)
Leigh Halfpenny finished the 2013 Six Nations Tournament on top of the points scorers table with an impressive 74 points, averaging 14.8 points per game. Halfpenny’s points came way of 19 Penalty Goals (57 points), 6 Conversions (12 points) and a single try in the first match against Ireland. Halfpenny’s haul of 23 points against Scotland in round four was also the highest points tally for any individual throughout the competition. With his 74 points, Halfpenny adds to an already amassed 92 points from his previous 15 Six Nations games to be sitting on a tournament haul of 166 points from the past five years.

TOP TRY SCORER Alex CUTHBERT Wales (4 Tries)
Playing in only his second Six Nations tournament, Alex Cuthbert took out the top place for highest try scorer in the 2013 Six Nations tournament with four tries from his five games. This included a superb double against England in the last round of the tournament to seal the 2013 Six Nations trophy for Wales. Cuthbert’s dominance on the wing throughout the tournament, matched with his three tries from 2012’s tournament and a further two tries from 2012 Internationals sees him as a front-runner for a 2013 British and Irish Lions squad birth.
