The Climbers

After our expedition to the Ogre, Clive and his business associate John Smith opened an equipment shop in Inverness. He continued climbing well into the 1980s, including the Cassin Ridge on Denali over five days with Joe Brown and Mo Anthoine in 1986. Just before Mo succumbed to his brain tumour, Clive joined his expedition to the North-East Ridge of Everest in 1988. Not many people know of Clive’s achievements in the mountains since he is genuinely modest and ‘just can’t be bothered with all that media crap’. He will always be known as a fine mountaineer who selflessly helped Chris and me down off the Ogre. Julian Vincent ‘Mo’ Anthoine (1939–1989) was born in Kidderminster where his father was a carpet designer.
