Kakoe Canoe

KAKOE CANOE Completed: June 2015 Members: Partnered with Sally Kim Course: 2B Design Studio Professors: Lola Sheppard, Scott Sorli, Ali Fard For this project, we were asked develop a strategic set of interventions that look at mobility network, programmatic nodes, and ecological frameworks for intervening with the Don Valley and the Don River in Toronto, Ontario. My partner and I therefore created a canoe rental system, with design interventions at three particular docking stations along the Don River. We wanted to propose a more established method of experiencing the urban river. This stage of the project is still rather conceptual. The next phase is building upon the research gathered in this project and applying it to a building program. Kakoe Canoe

9

We also developed an idea for an app that would advise the public on prime canoeing conditions, and warnings about flash floods. 10

This model represents an idea of what Station 2: The Beach could look like. In this specific area, few have stumbled upon secret pebbled beaches. We decided to build upon that and create an urban beach, ultimately providing a nice resting atmosphere for those travelling down the Don River. The beach is accessible by the river, and by trails that connect throughout the Don Valley. Station 2 Model | Kakoe Canoe

Liberate

LIBERATE Completed: December 2014 Members: Individual Course: 2A Design Studio Professors: Adrian Blackwell, Christos Marcopoulos, Scott Sørli, Marie-Paul Macdonald Why “Liberate?â€? I am liberating the ground plane and creating a public space underneath the building. This allows the site to maintain pedestrian activity and encourage interesting interactions between the ground plane and the building plane. The primary program for this building is a fitness center. The main circulation acts as a gym, and is designed to be used in circuit. Other programs encourage multiple uses for the community center, allowing the public to satisfy their needs accordingly. MONTAGE Completed: April 2014 Members: Individual Course: 1B Design Studio Professors: Don McKay, Anya Moryoussef, Maya Przybylski, Michaela MacLeod The objective of this project was to provide a mid-rise residential and commercial space that would compliment the colourful lifestyle of St.Clair Ave West in Toronto. Thus, combining multiple typologies allowed the creation of an urban setting where the contrast between the town homes and tower is evident through materiality and design, ultimately capturing the diversity of its site. The three town homes and tower are accessible from the alley, and face North. Their orientation takes advantage of Northeast sunlight and their views are protected from potential development. Sal贸n Port谩til

SALÓN PORTÁTIL Completed: December 2014 Members: Partnered with Sally Kim Course: 2A Environmental Design Professors: Terri Meyer Boake Salón Portátil is a portable classroom located in Barcelona, Spain. Its design is influenced by the culture and architecture in Barcelona, as well as pre-fabricated modular homes. The building is made from pre-fabricated steel and concrete parts that fit together to create a Gaudi inspired learning environment. Gaudi’s fascination with the natural world is evident in his design. In order to stay true to our inspiration, we created a wishboneshaped plan. The steel arches act like a ribcage protecting the inner shell. Solar panels are aligned in a spine-like fashion, and also resemble fish scales. This portable classroom is a hub for creative learning, and hopefully inspires the students that occupy it. Salón Portátil

Artist’s Residence

ARTIST’S RESIDENCE Completed: December 2013 Members: Individual Course: 1A Design Studio Professors: Rick Andrighetti, Haji Nakamura The essence of this project was to design a residence that would be occupied temporarily for either a writer, an artist, or a composer. I based my project to suit the ambitions of a writer. The site is located on a small lake near Cambridge, Ontario. The residence itself is built upon a marshy, wetland area that transitions into the water. The residence itself must provide a studio space that is separate from the living space. The living space has minimal dining requirements, for the main meals are provided at the main house on the site. Ultimately, I wanted the house to follow a similar path of a writer’s mind at work. This project was hand- drawn. Artist’s Residence

Urban Frames

URBAN FRAMES Completed: April 2014 Members: Partnered with Brian Chen Course: SSEF Competition 2014 Professors: Terri Meyer Boake The SSEF Design Competition’s challenge for 2014 was span. In order to fulfill the requirements, my partner and I created the concept of a multi-use pedestrian bridge that promotes the notion of a two-way picture frame. From below, the general public views the crossing from different methods of transportation. In their frame, pedestrians can either be crossing the bridge, standing and observing the street scape below them, or sitting and enjoying the moment. From above, the public has a view of the street. The picture frame becomes a movie screen, as the public who use the bridge create motion pictures. Urban Frames is a bridge meant for any urban environment. It allows people to step back from their daily lives and view it from above. Urban Frames

Hammock Hut

HAMMOCK HUT Completed: April 2014 Members: Individual Course: 1B Environmental Design Professors: Terri Meyer Boake The basis of this project was to design a space for temporary occupation that environmentally corresponds to the needs of its climate. Ultimately, I designed for the hot-humid climate of the Amazon Rainforest near Manaus, Brazil. The materiality and vernacular architecture was specifically chosen to fit the criterea of a hot-humid climate. A part from the technical aspects, creating a unique atmosphere was essential to the project. Therefore, having a net-like hammock built into the floor of the structure provides the user to experience a rare moment within the jungle. Hammock Hut

Window

WINDOW Completed: February 2014 Members: Individual Course: 1B Design Studio Professors: Don McKay, Anya Moryoussef The concept of this project was creating a prefabricated window that could easily be delivered and assembled for the user. Essentially, the window acts as an eye, allowing the viewer on the inside to see public moments on the ouside. In contrast, viewers on the outside can see personal moments on the inside. Therefore, the eyes in the human body provide the relationship that connects the outside to the inside, much like the windows of a building provide that opportunity. It is proven that the structure of the eye is linked to one’s personality. If we regard the window as a part of the structure of a building, we begin to explore that language and develop its personality.
