Magazine DESIGNER CORNER

Design

the Summe r !! August! Here we come. We still can enjoy the longer day, the warmer weather, and feel more relaxing throughout August. To me, August is like the SUNDAY of summer, and I’m always left wondering…what did I do or how did I spend my summertime? The answer is…Creativity With no big vacation plans this year, I’ve been enjoying my local surroundings as discovering new restaurants, new hangout café and new walking paths. I’ve been spending time with my wife and friends, taking workshops with instructor and new friends in UX/UI design class and weekend trips with appreciative of the small things that occur around. There’re many stories all around me which help me inspire opportunities, ideas and develop an eye for design. Well, it’s because, each story provides with the details of the solutions to particular problems. Same thing with the design-thinking process because it approaches to problem-solving that focus on innovation and creation. Design thinking does not begin with skills designers have learned, actually! human needs or the desirable from a human point of view is the first step in the design process. That is why, stories or situations that happen around can help spark new ideas for my work and have a good design eye as knowing the trends of the day are. This is not skills restrict to artists, writers or designers, It’s a useful skill for people in different types of jobs and levels of society.

Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Appoints Tonya Veasey New CEO

Chief Marketing Executive/ Co-Founder

Maryland State Senate

She is a problem-solver and bridge builder. She brings stakeholders together from the public and private sectors to drive positive social and economic change through creative communications, strategic relationships, and thoughtful leadership. Earlier this month, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), a non-partisan nonprofit and educational institute focused on advancing the global Black community, announced Tonya Veasey as its new president and CEO. Her hope is to create a framework to guide the community through these tumultuous political times. After running her own businesses for over 14 years, Veasey sees her appointment as a natural progression given her connections and work with the foundation. “My husband is actually a member of Congress, so for a while I was heavily involved in the spouses organization [and] served on the [CDCF] board,” Veasey said in an interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE. “Our [current] board chair, [Congressman Cedric Richmond,] said, ‘You could you step in on an interim basis and help us really assess what do we need to do to move the foundation forward to build a strong infrastructure.’ So, I did that for about four months and really enjoyed the work…I knew the team, so I wasn’t a stranger coming in. I not only know the members, but I also know our internal team as well as a lot of our sponsors and partners, [so] it was a great opportunity.” #socialimpact #DEI #socialjustice

PALM BEACH TAN GAMBRILLS Our tanning salon in Gambrills, MD is dedicated to 100% customer satisfaction and we’re excited to help you find your perfect shade. Stop by, meet our certified tanning consultants and learn more about our state-of-the-art sunless spray tanning and sunbed tanning.

PREP YOUR SKIN

1. For best results, exfoliate before your session and focus on the driest areas — elbows, knees, hands, feet and the backs of your ankles. PBT offers a wide array of exfoliating products like this pre-session exfoliant. Try to avoid waxing or other spa treatments the day of your spray tan. 2. The day of your spray tan, don’t use moisturizers unless they are specifically formulated for sunless tanning (i.e., oil‑free).

WHAT TO WEAR

3. Avoid wearing perfumes, deodorant or makeup that can create a barrier for absorption. Avoid wearing tight clothing and shoes such as boots, socks or tights, which may rub off some of the spray tan and cause uneven results. 4. Wear dark, loose-fitting clothes. If possible, wear nail polish. Even if your nail polish is clear coat, it will help protect your nails from discoloration. 17

|

August 2022

THE NAKED TRUTH

5. Once you’re set up in one of our private and secure tanning rooms, disrobe to your level of comfort. If you choose not to spray tan nude, wear a swimsuit or undergarment that you don’t mind possibly staining. Be sure to remove all jewelry and wear a protective hair cap. PBT also supplies disposable undergarments, if preferred. For optimal results, apply your favorite Premier Collection® Sunless Primer all over your body and let dry.

PREP & PROTECT

6. Barrier cream is an important element for prepping your spray tan. Apply a light layer of the cream in areas where skin tends to be rougher — hands, fingers, feet, toes and the sides of your feet. Don’t forget to apply to your cuticles, as well. These areas tend to soak up more spray solution. For your protection and convenience, PBT provides hair caps, protective eyewear, nose filters, lip balm and cotton balls.

18

|

August 2022

WAIT FOR IT…

7. Avoid the following for the defined time period: Bathing or swimming: At least 4 hours. Activities that make you sweat heavily: At least 4 hours. Chlorine: Swimming in chlorinated pools will quickly break down your spray tan. We suggest avoiding entirely, if possible.

KEEP YOUR GLOW LONGER

8. Moisturize daily with a post-sunless product like one of these. Beware: Drugstore lotions may contain oils and other ingredients that can shorten the life of your spray tan. 9. Avoid body washes that contain harsh soaps, exfoliants or oils. These ingredients can also shorten the life of your tan. We recommend using soaps that are especially formulated to extend the life of your tan — like this daily body wash. 10. Avoid using pore strips, bandages and exfoliants (until you’re ready to spray again).

19

August 2022

TAN TIP:

Spray 1 or 2 days before your event, so your spray tan has time to set and look its natural best.

7 Proven Ways to Calm Your Anxious Dog

1. Exercise Your Dog If your dog has separation anxiety, the obvious way to ease their mind is to never leave them alone. That is not a reality for most pet owners, so using exercise as both a bonding time and to tire out your pet is often an easy fix! Because anxiety can cause an excess of energy, taking your dog out to play ball or on a long walk before you leave can be helpful. Providing plenty of physical contact and talking to them during this time is also beneficial. And, like their human counterparts, exercise can help relieve stress by producing beneficial endorphins. Check out our recent guide: How to Exercise Your Dog

21

|

August 2022

2. Physical Contact There is probably nothing more soothing to an anxious dog than its owner’s touch. Try to identify the signs of anxiety in your dog and nip them in the bud as early as possible by picking them up, cuddling on the couch, or giving them a good long petting session.

3. Massage As you probably know, a massage will relax and calm even the most anxious human — did you know it also works wonders with dogs as well?! Anxiety often causes tensing of the muscles and massage therapy is one way to alleviate tension. Start at the neck and work downward with long strokes. Try to keep one hand on the dog, while the other works to massage. Over time you may even be able to identify where your dog holds its stress and just work on that one particular area. 22 | August 2022

4. Music Therapy Music therapy has been proven to be beneficial for both humans, as well as our canine and feline friends. The power of music can be calming and relaxing while you’re home, in the car, or away from your pet. Music can also alleviate noise sensitivity by blocking the street or scary noises that bother some dogs and create anxiety. Research has shown that many dogs prefer classical music. Harp music, often used in hospice situations, can be a natural sedative. You might try: • Through A Dog’s Ear by pianist

Lisa Spector and psychoacoustics researcher Joshua Leeds • Noah’s Harp: Surrender by Susan Raimond

5. Time-Out While anxiety isn’t a bad behavior per se, it can help to give your dog some time-out when they’re acting out. Isolating your pet in a safe and quiet space can help calm their frayed nerves. Maybe that space has some very quiet music playing, low lights, and/or some aromatherapy available (see below “Alternative Therapies”).

23

|

August 2022

You might also try a ZenCrate for timeouts, and as a general escape pod for your furry friend. The ZenCrate was designed to help dogs with a variety of anxiety factors. It’s similar to a standard crate but it provides vibration isolation, noise cancellation (through sound insulation), reduced light, as well as comfort and security. A motion-activated sensor turns on a gentle fan when your dog enters, which helps block noise and provides a steady stream of fresh air. You can pre-program the crate with music. It comes with a removable door, so your dog can self-comfort and enter at any time.

7. Alternative Therapies While there is limited evidence that alternative products can be of benefit to dogs suffering from anxiety, the products listed below are noninvasive and will cause no harm. They are therapies that can be used alone or combined with those above to be more effective. Be sure to do proper research before implementing alternative therapies, and consult with your veterinarian, too.

6. Calming Coats/T-Shirts Calming coats and t-shirts apply mild, constant pressure to a dog’s torso, surrounding a dog much like a swaddling cloth on a baby. It’s recommended for dogs with any type of anxiety induced by travel, separation, noise, or stranger anxiety. Depending on the size of your dog, there are several brands and models to choose from. You can check out ThunderShirt Anxiety Jacket, American Kennel Club Stress Relief Coat, and the Comfort Zone Calming Vest.

INNER HARBOR AREA The INNER HARBOR area, Baltimore’s main commercial center, is a hub for restaurants, shopping and waterfront attractions. The NATIONAL AQUARIUM, MARYLAND SCIENCE CENTER, PORT DISCOVERY CHILDREN’S MUSEUM, and the AMERICAN VISIONARY ART MUSEUM offer fun for all ages. Guided HERITAGE WALKING TOURS are also offered, connecting 20 historic sites and museums. Stop by the Baltimore Visitor Center for information and tickets. Just south of the main harbor area is Federal Hill, where CROSS STREET MARKET sells the usual fresh seafood and locally grown produce along with a variety of unusual products like pigs’ ears, pickled eggs and ox tails. If you are looking for more conventional dining options, enjoy a nice meal at one of the many taverns, restaurants and pubs that line the streets. After dark, explore the energetic nightlife. Fans of professional sports will want to visit CAMDEN YARDS, home to the Baltimore Orioles baseball team, and M&T BANK STADIUM, the roost of football’s Baltimore Ravens. Learn about Maryland’s proud athletic heritage at the BABE RUTH BIRTHPLACE & MUSEUM. Stop by the Baltimore Visitor Center to pick up a Harbor Pass for discounted entry to several of these attractions, as well as the TOP OF THE WORLD OBSERVATION LEVEL, located atop the world’s tallest pentagonal building, the World Trade Center in Baltimore. 28

WELCOME TO BALTIMORE We are writing a new chapter in our history, fueled by cultural tastemakers and creative entrepreneurs. Today’s Baltimore is a vibrant community that honors the past while keeping a keen eye on the future. Our city is where you can see the largest public collection of Matisse in the world (for free!), sip a craft beer in the sanctuary of a converted church and stay in a four-star hotel poised atop an historic recreation pier. But the Baltimore experience is about more than exploring neighborhoods and cultural sites. To really know this place, you have to meet our artists, provocateurs and visionaries who call Charm City home. Come see what we’re all about and plan your visit today.

Founded by Tony Brown and Jonathan Jay in 2018, Maverick City Music emerged from a series of writing camps dedicated to bringing together a diverse range of artists from various genres who would normally not have the opportunity to be in a room together. The songs that emerged from these writing camps would lay the groundwork for the success of Maverick City Music. In two years, the group secured multiple top ten releases on the Billboard charts, garnered over 300 million streams worldwide, and sold out their first ever tour which took place in arenas across the country. The impact of Maverick City Music continues to resonate as they bring together millions of people and provide a sense of community to those who needed a place to go. In 2021 Billboard crowned Maverick City Music as the #2 Gospel artist of the year. Maverick City Music has earned multiple Stellar Gospel Music Awards, Dove Awards and a Billboard Music Award.
