LETTER from The EDITOR

SAYING GOODBYE TO 2020 I

t’s time for sweaters and boots, cool evenings around the fire, and pumpkin spice everything! Whether you are into enjoying the great outdoors or admiring nature from your freshly organized living room, this issue has something for everyone. We hope that it can be a sunny spot in a rather dark time. As we round out a year of challenges, sorrow, frustration, and learning to embrace a new normal, I say let’s finish out strong with hope for the future. This year many of us have faced rock bottom, but as the saying goes, “It can only get better from here.” So let us face any obstacles or challenges in our way, and keep moving onward and upward into a brighter and better 2021. As always, Alexandria, thank you for being with us and stay kind.

MONIQUE HOLLAND WITH HOLLAND CUSTOM DESIGNS – DECORATING DEN INTERIORS, AND HER EXPERT TEAM TAKE ON 2020 Making your space what you want it to be with perfect style & functionality in this new season of our lives. Article By Alyson Turner Photography By John Wardell

10 | November/December 2020

Before & After Photos Courtesy of Monique Holland With everything going on in the world, many people have had to completely redesign their lives when telework and virtual learning became our daily norm. We were able to chat with renowned Interior Designer Monique Holland of Holland Custom Designs – Decorating Den Interiors, to learn a little bit more about how she and her team help bring your vision to life.

How has your business grown in 2020 in spite of the challenges the world has faced?

Unexpected growth has happened; notwithstanding, COVID-19. There was a slowdown in March, but in April we commenced with virtual presentations and by May the floodgates opened. There was clearly pent up demand. Additionally, as people were finding themselves at home and realizing that they may be there for a while they began scheduling consultations to determine how they could make their spaces more functional. Clients are also now more focused on the functionality while searching for ways to improve their spaces. I am happy to say that my business has continued to grow and we were able to bring on new hires. We have officially moved to a larger studio location.

How would you describe what you do?

I create beautiful spaces for people and view myself as an artist. My main goal is to help bring a client’s vision to life. I accomplish this by transforming clients’ homes into functional and beautiful works of art.

How long have you been in business? Why did you decide to work in the Alexandria area?

While I’ve been designing beautiful spaces for over 20 years, I have been in business for myself since 2018. Actually, Alexandria is not a location I found, it found me. My main focus areas are Washington DC, National Harbor and areas in Maryland north to Upper Marlboro, Maryland. My studio is right across the bridge at National Harbor, and many clients in Alexandria find me through an independent search.

What types of services do you offer for those looking to re-imagine their current space for more functionality and more time in the home? We are a full-service design studio. We offer interior design services, paint consultations, and project management for home construction projects where clients want to remodel kitchens and bathrooms. Sometimes, we offer services, not listed on our website to accommodate a clients’ needs.

We are ASID Certified in Health and Wellness in Interior Design and Biophilic Design. This knowledge is helping us addressing clients’ health needs as well.

What do you tell new clients who are coming to you for the first time?

I advise every client that I don’t take the fact that they contacted us for granted and that we look to earn their business. We view the initial consultation as an interview, a chance where we both get to decide if we are a good fit for one another. After discussing the entire process, I let clients know that they can expect constant communication and honesty throughout the process. I also want clients to think about the pieces they want to keep that have sentimental value. I don’t believe in throwing everything out if there are pieces you already love.

Where does your Inspiration come from when starting a new project?

My inspiration comes from the clients’ vision for how they want their space to feel and look. We conduct a design interview and in-depth fact finding during the initial consultation. I don’t start the design the same for every client. They may have a piece of artwork or an heirloom piece that inspires me or it could be a color that they absolutely love and want to see throughout their space.

What do you hope clients will take away from the experience once they work with you?

I want them to walk away feeling that they received a great value for the services provided. I want them to love the space. The reactions that I see from their newly designed spaces are priceless. I have a high percentage of repeat clients because once they are able to see what can be done for their budget, they start a new home project.

Why do you believe it is important for clients to use a professional (such as yourself) when redesigning their space?

We are trained to bring their vision to life. The reasons to hire a professional are vast, including saving money and time. I ask people to really think about all the money they have spent trying to get their space to have the look and feel that they have wanted, but have not been able to achieve over the years. Before [you] consider continuing along that path, try something different. Aside from the initial phone call, we provide complimentary in-home consultations.

For your complimentary consultation, visit mholland.decoratingden.com or call (301) 567-0680. November/December 2020 | 11

RENOVATE & REFINE Before & After Bri n gi n g Lu xu r y To Life I n T his Al ex andria Townhome The Lounge – The lounge was the third small bedroom of this home. The client wanted a space other than the bedroom to relax, to read and to watch television. We turned this space into a multifunctional lounge. We removed the closet doors and turned the closet into a desk area. We added lighting in the closet area as well. The client was very happy with her Chesterfield sofa and all the jewel tones of the space. The Pantry – The kitchen originally contained an open counter area and a detached pantry. We attached the pantry to the counter and made it feel part of the space and added kitchen handles to match the remaining cabinet doors. We also utilized the open space under the counter for a

wine/beverage refrigerator and custom made a wine rack to hold bottles and wine glasses. We put in a small table for client to entertain visiting guests. The Shoe Closet – The client really emphasized a need for storage for her shoes. The closet was small so we designed and custom built a shoe rack in the closet which allows her to hold upwards of 50 pairs of shoes. We left the wood in its natural state and stained with linseed oil. The Guest Room – The guest room was a place that the client wanted to have a spa-like feel for her visiting parents and guests. We used calming blue tones to create this atmosphere.

Love the great outdoors, but not a fan of roughing it? Glamour Camping or Glamping is the best of both worlds.

November/December 2020 | 21

Camping has long been an exciting adventure for both families and the solo traveler. You can enjoy going out into nature, seeing beautiful sights that you don’t get to enjoy in your daily life. Camping used to involve a tent, a backpack, and campfire. For those who prefer a little bit more luxury during their vacation the trend of Glamour + Camping (Glamping) is here to stay. According to Glamping.com, “It’s much more than a nice tent. The glamping movement is growing, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. Across the globe, you’ll find incredible destinations, each offering their own unique advantages. You can wake up in a yurt on a mountaintop. Reside in the forest canopy in a treehouse. Take in the panoramic views in an eco-lodge. And that’s just to name a few. Glamping today encompasses many accommodation experiences. Our collection of tents, 22 | November/December 2020

villas, cabins, lodges, tipis and treehouses and more will encourage you to travel outside the norm.” Glamping allows you to revel in the joy of traveling and the peace of nature without having to “rough it” in the traditional way. Many campsites & resorts are offering glamping accommodations across the nation and around the world. A quick search for vacation rentals and AirBnBs shows a large array of glamping style tents and more. These luxurious quarters often include gorgeous views and an authentic connection to the surrounding area. If you are looking for the chance to get away, recharge your batteries, and enjoy a safe, socially distant vacation this fall, then glamping is the way to go. You can be one with the beauty of nature while having some of the comforts of home.

How To DECLUTTER Without

Sacrificing Things

That You

Love What are you favorite decluttering methods? Let us know on Instagram @SimplyAlexandriaMagazine. 30 | November/December 2020

HERE ARE SOME CREATIVE TIPS FOR DECLUTTERING 1. Start with one small space at a time. Are you guilty of tossing your shoes, coat, mail, and purse in your entry way when you arrive home? The first thing we see when we enter our homes can set us up for frustration and anxiety. If you clear up your entryway by placing your shoes, bag, and coat in their designated spaces there will be a lot less clutter the next time you arrive home again. Then, sort through your mail and shred what you aren’t keeping rather than letting it pile up by the front door. 2. Focus on your storage options. In today’s world, it is as easy as a click of a button and you can have the perfect trendy and functional storage delivered to your door. Whether that is a dining room hutch to store all of your china or an ottoman that opens to reveal your favorite throw pillows and blankets, the possibilities are endless. With functional and appealing storage, you will be able to declutter without sacrificing too much. 3. Donate what you don’t use to a local charity. That is not to say that there isn’t a time and a place for parting with the things that you don’t need. If you haven’t worn a shirt in an entire year, then it should go into the donation bin. Many local charities welcome donations that are in good shape and use it to help those in need. So not only do you declutter your home, you are making a difference as well. 4. If It is broken, don’t keep it. We all hang on to things that we love in hopes that they can be reused or repaired. When it comes to something that is sitting broken in a drawer, the time has come to get rid of it. You can make room for all of the new things that you and your family need. 5. Sort your “clutter into three sections. Keep, Donate, Sell. The items that you cannot part with go straight into the keep pile. Those will later be sorted into your various storage selections. Additionally, anything else that you do not plan to keep will go to your donation bin that you are planning to take to a local charity. The items that are newer or have a lot of life in them can also be sold in a yard sale or in an online marketplace. You can tuck that money away for a rainy day. 32 | November/December 2020

SIMPLE PLEASURES Make the Most of a Staycation Houzz Contributor Laura Gaskill Taking time off from work to stay at home is a wonderful way to save cash while still getting the R&R of a vacation. At least it can be … as long as you commit to enjoying yourself and don’t just spend the time catching up on household chores. To make the most of your time off, it’s important to do what you can to shut off the outside world and rid yourself of your usual routines. Choose one or more of these ideas to help you rock your staycation.

1. Savor the outdoors. Part of what is so delightful about being on vacation is being outdoors, so get out there. We may not have a water view, but we can bring our coffee outside in the morning, carry a glass of wine to the deck in the evening or simply sit with a book in the shade and feel the breeze. To boost ambience, set candles and a few bud vases of flowers on your table. If you want to go a step further, hang up outdoor curtains — they make any outdoor space feel special. 2. Host a movie night on the lawn. Hang up a white sheet, rent or buy a simple projector that connects to your laptop or smart phone. Bring out some lawn chairs or spread blankets on the lawn, and hand out yummy snacks. The beauty of being at home is that you can serve whatever you want, whether that’s classic popcorn and candy or grownup drinks and cocktail nibbles.

Kate Jackson Design

Fifthroom.com

3. Splurge on a plush new robe. And wear it every morning! Let your fresh, fluffy robe signal the start of vacation.

5. Hire a massage therapist to come to you. You don’t need to go to a fancy spa to bliss out — have the spa come to you instead. Find a local massage therapist who makes house calls and get ready to relax.

4. Listen to beachy music. Cue up some of your favorite summer tunes and make a few playlists to get in the vacation spirit. If you’ve been wanting to get a few new albums, your staycation is a great excuse to splurge. Music can give us a major mood boost, so listen more often than usual.

6. Sign up for a [virtual] one-day class. If you love trying new things on vacation, don’t feel you must miss out just because you are at home. Check out the continuing education department at your local university or community center, or search listings in the free paper to locate upcoming online workshops that sound appealing. Try a cooking class, a painting or pottery workshop, or a lecture. 7. Take a guided tour, nature walk or boat ride. Have a beautiful outdoor space or historic landmark in your area? Be a tourist for a day and [explore your local area]. November/December 2020 | 33

HABITAT Landscape Architecture 8. Take your yoga practice outdoors. Change up your routine by rolling out your mat in the sun. Enjoying fresh air and breezes is a wonderful way to start the day. 9. Hire a yoga instructor or personal trainer. Splurge on having a personal trainer or yoga instructor [to design] a workout tailored for you. [Many trainers offer virtual options for socially distanced workouts.]

Margot Hartford Photography 11. Treat the family to new shades. The bigger and more glamorous, the better. 12. Rent a cool car. Want a change of pace? Leave the boring commuter car in the garage and rent a sportier car (or even a Vespa) for the week.

Matthew Bolt Graphic Design 15. Hire a housecleaning service. Give yourself the gift of coming home to a fresh, clean house without lifting a finger. Consider having a housecleaner come at the start of your staycation (so you can enjoy the week in a clean house) and at the end (so you don’t have to face cleaning before returning to work).

Beckwith Interiors 10. Make yourself a big batch of fancy water. Slices of cucumber, lemon or lime or sprigs of fresh mint look beautiful in a glass pitcher and make drinking water more appealing. Start each day of your staycation with a fresh batch of fancy water.

34 | November/December 2020

Tracey Rapisardi Design 13. Sweep away (read: hide) everyday junk. Who wants to look at piles of bills and work stuff on vacation? Not you! Pile it all in a box and hide it until your staycation is over. 14. Have the post office hold your mail. Or at least do yourself a favor and toss the mail in a box (see above) without looking at it. If you really were out of town, the world would keep revolving even without your checking your mail, right?

/di’korem/ 16. Set the table with local finds. A few cute new candles or a striped runner, along with piles of pretty shells and rocks collected on the beach [or your favorite fall décor].

Scott Sanders LLC 17. Set up a staycation bar. Set out some of your favorite drinks (alcoholic and not) on a pretty tray, along with an ice bucket, glasses and a bowl of lemons or limes.

Daniella Villamil Interiors

Matthew Bolt Graphic Design

20. Bring home fresh flowers. Scoop up an armful of the most luscious blooms you can find at the farmer’s market and plunk them in a vase. Repeat as often as you like.

22. Squeeze fresh juice and make a homemade breakfast each morning. Breakfast is easier to pull together than dinner, and it can be fun if you rarely have time to sit down, let alone make a full breakfast, during the week. 23. Pick up breakfast every morning. Skip the cooking and the dishes, and just head right out the door first thing in the morning instead. Go somewhere you haven’t tried before to spice things up. 24. Take pictures. On a vacation you tote your camera everywhere, right? Just because you’re at home, don’t let that stop you. Take pictures every day — the act of taking photographs helps us slow down and see things we would normally miss.

Waterscapes 18. Cook and eat outdoors. It’s more fun, and it can require less cleanup. Win-win! 19. Try no-cook recipes. Think shrimp cocktail, ceviche, chilled soups, salads and icebox cakes.

Scott Sanders LLC 21. Give your living room a makeover. Drape a pretty blanket or coverlet over the sofa, or swap out pillow covers. Tape postcards or snapshots to the wall with colorful paper craft tape.
