Wildfire smoke advisory continues for area Morning Star Staff
As of Thursday, the Ministry of Environment was continuing a smoke advisory for the North Okanagan because of forest fire smoke from elsewhere in the Interior. “Smoke concentrations will vary widely as winds, fire behaviour and temperatures change,” said Ralph Adams, an air quality meteorologist with the ministry. “This situation is expected to persist for the next 24 hours.” Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during smoke advisories. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, contact your health care provider: difficulty in breathing, chest pain or discomfort, and sudden onset of cough or irritation of airways. Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, and lung or heart disease. “Although air quality readings in Vernon have improved considerably, fire activity is ongoing and the potential remains for a return to smoky conditions,” said Adams.
