Boil alert may be lifted RICHARD ROLKE Morning Star Staff
Some Greater Vernon residents are waiting to hear if they can drink out of the tap again. The North Okanagan Regional District initiated a boil water advisory for 15,000 customers on the Duteau Creek source Saturday, and a decision on lifting the alert could come some time on Renee Clark Thursday. “We will move out of it if all goes well,” said Renee Clark, senior water quality technologist. The advisory was launched after recent rain increased levels in Duteau Creek and turbidity (or
cloudiness) spiked. On Saturday, quality was rated as poor. “We have to go through the distribution system and make sure nothing is impacted,” said Clark. “We are checking the bacterial levels and the turbidity levels.” Until the alert is lifted, all customers on the Duteau Creek source are urged to boil water for one minute for drinking, washing produce, making beverages or ice and brushing teeth. Customers can also choose to use bottled water or water that has been filtered through a wellmaintained treatment device. While the rain has created water quality concerns, it has helped alleviate another issue facing Greater Vernon — a lack of water. “Our lake reservoirs are almost at capacity at this time,” said Clark.
Impaired driving incidents spike in Vernon It’s not officially summer, but the RCMP’s busiest time for dealing with impaired drivers has already begun. Over the past week, Vernon RCMP arrested 10 people for impaired driving, and issued another six 24-hour suspensions. “Summer is the peak time for impaired drivers,” said spokesman Gord Molendyk. “Everyone thinks it’s Christmas time, and New Year’s, maybe that’s because of the CounterAttack program and awareness. But the summer months
are busy months.” Molendyk said people are now out playing softball and golf, going to the beach or camping, and the problem is that alcohol is usually involved with the activities. “Our officers are well aware that people are out in the great outdoors and they’re drinking,” he said. “People can’t forget that it is an offence to drive under the influence of alcohol.” RCMP will be making regular patrols this summer, both on the roads and on the water, targeting impaired drivers.
